Anyone know if the Truman is having a "Friends & Family" Day and when it might be? Would sure love to make plans to be there! I texted sailor asking but alas, no response regarding it!
B'sNukeMom......our sailors will learn a lot while serving, for sure. My own grandson has matured so much in the last 3 years it's amazing. He is actually thinking about the future...
While it can be frustrating for them and for those of us who wait, that frustration leads to maturity and learning to deal with the unexpected, for sure.
I remember that from my own days in the Corps. In a matter of weeks, I went from a young woman to a mature and responsible adult.....and it has stayed with me all my life...as will the things our own are going through.
Heard from sailor late yesterday - he said he hasn't heard of any "Friends or Family" day as of yet.....Probably because they are preparing for more important things! I just don't want to miss out when they do have one!
GrandmaBarB - I agree with you on the maturity process. My sailor is a little older - he'll be 26 in June, but boy it's been great seeing what the Navy has done for him in the last 3 years. Makes my heart swell!
Hi all, I'm new on here and I have a daughter on the Truman. First child to leave the nest :( - anyway we are patiently waiting their schedule too - we want to visit with her this summer but she doesn't want us to make final plans yet because she's not sure when she'll be on land. Anyone else going through this?
Hi all - Happy Friday and Happy Mother's Day. I hope you are lucky enough to hear from your sailor or sailorette but if not know that you are still being thought of!
Saturday is my husband & I's 28th anniversary & we were going to celebrate by going to visit our sailor daughter for the whole weekend but that isn't happening now so making alternative plans
Well, my son had PRK eye surgery on Monday so will be missing the rest of the fun this week on the ship... BUT, he was notified that he is on the promotion list. That was a surprise as he was told it is hardly ever done with your first exam and only 6 months on the ship. He was so excited. I hope all sailors are doing well in this busy time onboard. Have a great rest of your week and long weekend. God Bless those who serve.
Hi all - Happy Tuesday! Got a couple of emails from my sailor over the weekend - so glad he finally got his email account set up ;-) He sent me a couple of pictures too - glad things are moving along for them. He sounded pleased with things....
I saw some pictures on the Truman FB page - looked for my son but didn't see him :( They were doing some fun stuff up on deck - working out, running, hitting golf balls. Hopefully some of you will spot your sailors!
Hi I'm new to N4M's. I'm super excited about my son Navy experience and future. This is a whole new world to me. He seemed to like his first underway experience. Can't wait to hear about this one!
Was hoping to get an email from sailor over the weekend, but I know they are very busy. I saw on the Truman mom's FB page that they've had rough seas and a number of sailors have gotten seasick. I'm anxious to hear how my sailor is doing lol!
Don't fret. When they are out there, they are working hard for at least 12 hours a day....and are simply too tired for much else except some food and sleep. He'll be in touch when he can.
Thanks GrandmaBarB - I'm not fretting - my son is a nuke in the reactor division so I know he is plenty busy (as they all are)! He was able to email on the underway last week & he said he hoped to be able to email this time out....I did get a text with a couple of pics when they pulled out....I'm just curious to see if the rough seas are affecting him in any way!
Welcome to our group faith. I have a daughter that AO.
B'sNukemom I've heard from daughter almost everyday. She said about have a bad cold & most on the ship have been sick but she is finally feeling better because when she was home last she got some cold meds. She has said nothing about the storms. Funny thing is she always got car sick growing up. We went on a cruise several years ago & she got seasick on the cruise. Since joining the Navy she hasn't been seasick once.
6 more days of school left for me, then schools out for summer!!
Talked to son after his first time going out. He said first day was tough but things got better after that. He said the motion actually rocked him to sleep at night. Hoping his doing well second time out.
My son missed the first underway while recovering from eye surgery but is in the thick of it now. Haven't heard too much from him, but I have gotten some facebook time the last couple days. As he is in IT, he has his hands on computers that will let him communicate :-) I think he said it was a good bartering tool once deployed. "Can you get this signed for me in exchange for some communication time with your family... or in an airconditioned room." The only one on the ship I think. He hasn't mentioned the weather but has been very busy like all on the ship. The comments from you guys keeps me filled in with what I don't know... so thanks alot.
Good morning Sunshines! It's wonderful to see some postings here! I hope you and your entire family are doing well! Our Sailor Son called before they left. He talked for a long time! He was so excited to get going! He's AO and had been helping supply. They can only count ordnance so many times I guess! LOL It's wonderful to hear joy in his voice!
too tall Joan - My sailor was one that was always getting carsick as a little guy too - we couldn't go around the block without him throwing up! That's why I'm anxious to hear how he is handling the rough seas lol! He said no problems on the underway last week though....I hope this one is ok!
Got a text from my sailor yesterday when he got off the ship - he was heading to his apt to get a good nights rest, had to be back on the ship today but said he would call Saturday! I'm anxious to find out how soon they will be leaving again....Hope everyone gets to hear from their sailor!
Does anyone know the link to watch ships in Norfolk?
My sailor got in touch with me yesterday. He was happy to be back in port but says they are out again on Monday for 3 weeks. Then he has 10 day leave in July.
A Sailor's life is never dull, for sure.
You can find webcams for the passenger facilities down there but not for the Navy. See, they really don't want anyone to know what ships might be in port and where they are....and that is certainly understandable.
Thanks GrandmaBarB - I know they do webcams in San Diego - they just had video/shots of the USS Vinson returning from a 10 month deployment so I was hoping that Norfolk would do the same. Maybe when they return from a deployment rather than just an underway they will.
B'sNukeMoM my sailor said she doesn't get seasick at all on the ship but you out her in a car on a windy road & she'll be sicker than a dog.
I was so glad to hear her voice today. She always emails me when she can but nothing like her voice...except seeing her in person...but that's not going to happen for awhile.
The few webcams in San Diego are not for the Naval Base or other military structures.....There are several cameras that give views of the different facilities around the Harbor area.
When a ship comes and goes from there, or from Norfolk or other places, military cameras will many times show it coming and going...in a very restricted view.
What a ship is doing, where it's berthed, when it leaves and returns is a closely guarded security issue...for obvious reasons.
Once a ship leaves it's berth and goes into the channel, local TV stations are permitted to film it all the way to the exit of the Chesapeake.
I hope you all are doing well on this Sunday evening. It was great to hear from my son this weekend. I hinted that I knew they would be heading out again soon and he was very frustrated with me. He reminded me of the dangers and importance of not sharing online or on the phone any incoming or outgoing dates for the ships, even with my family. He doesn't tell me anyway for security reasons. He said they are not supposed to. He'll just say "soon." It scared the tar out of me that other sailors had their home addresses, etc. on an ISIS sympathetic website. It's awful easy to chat amongs ourselves but I have to keep reminding myself that it is dangerous to my son and those with kids aboard the Truman if I chat about times, dates, places, etc. I hope everyone had some good contact with your sons/daughers and that you are all doing well. I assume they will be gone again soon, and we look forward to seeing him hopefully sometime in July when we go to visit him. Taking the entire family for the last time before deployment. Looking forward to it. Have a great day...
Had a nice chat with our sailor on Saturday. He's feeling good about things so I'm happy that he's happy!
He decided that now he does want a mattress topper for his bunk! I'm going to look on Amazon, but if anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate any info! I'll be able to ship it directly to his apartment & then he'll have to get it to the ship.
His 26th birthday is 6/19 - his 3rd bday since he's been in the Navy - weird that we haven't seen him for the last 3 bdays. On the other hand the time sure has gone by fast!
BoomMom - I hope you have a nice visit in July! Gosh I'm thinking I should try to plan a trip too or it's gonna be awhile. It's so hard for my hubby to get off work (I on the other hand can take off no problem!). We are going to Mammoth later this month and hubby has to come back home 2 days earlier because of his work schedule....
Hi all! I don't post much but I love reading all your posts! I love this community! Question - my daughter wants a better curtain around her bunk with pockets - are these available to purchase and they must be Navy approved - correct? Also in one of the postings below - you all are talking about a mattress topper? do these have to be Navy approved as well? We are visiting her in July (hopefully) and I want to bring these items with us. Thanks!
LOVE LOVE LOVE that video! I can't stop watching it. My Daughter is having so much fun and LOVES it. It amazes me that 14-15 years ago her favorite cartoon was Theodore the Tugboat and looks like Theodore is helping the Truman!
