sea salt sorry you didn't have a very good visit. My daughter has always been mature but she has grown & blossomed into a beautiful lady while in the Navy. She has never drank & is repulsed by her peers that do so on a daily basis. Just wanted you to know that not all choose the "party" lifestyle
  • GrandmaBarB

Sea Salt, let go.  Your daughter is an adult in every way.  She is no longer your little girl....and she does not need your advice.  She is a warrior...who will be going into harms way and into dangers you cannot imagine.  She belongs to the Navy now....to we, the people, the taxpayers.  She lives in a world of doing what she is told, when to do it and how long.  Her home isn't open to you or to anyone, without permission from those who keep our kids safe.

Perhaps wait for her to come home on leave to enjoy her company.  She'll need a touch of home sooner or later.  Meanwhile, leave her be.  If she gets out of control, her Commanding Officer will handle it.  You cannot...not anymore.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hang in there Sea Salt - just let your daughter know that you love her and will always be there for her but give her some space right now.  She may just be spreading her wings a little.....hugs to you momma & you know you can always come here to vent.  We've got your back!

  • JKHarris

Hi Sea Salt, your daughter will be ok, she has not abandoned her upbringing. Trust that you gave her the right tools to sustain her. She will be ok the Navy has a way of "growing them up". Show her love and support. In conversation with her be selective of your words despite how she is behaving you still want her to keep in touch. Trust me the experience will strengthen your relationship. I learned from experience my daughter was on the Truman having a very hard time with female drama etc. she is now aboard the Ike and doing a little better she tells me "mom I had one beer", I said I'm so proud of you. Had I badgered her she would have cut off communication. Now she calls me asking for advise and I must admit the topics are tough for me to handlesometimes but I rather her call me than than look for answers in all the wrong places. Be her mom she loves you and need you. Just as
  • JKHarris

GrandmaBarB said "she is an adult" adult make their own choices. Stay strong we are all in this together. Love to all
  • Sea Salt

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words.  I am letting her be an adult, it's just tough on this mama.  Esp being so far away. I have to let her make her own mistakes and learn by them.  I don't usually vent to strangers or start drama, but I just needed to hear from other parents on this issue.  She's a good kid deep down, I hope it comes back!  Thanks again all!

    Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

  • 1Bodyprof

Sea Salt: she is becoming an adult and needs to find her place. Focus on the good parenting job you have done and she will come around. I have been praying that God will surround all our Sailors with good friends who know Him.
  • GrandmaBarB

Sea Salt.  What you are experiencing isn't unusual or new.  I joined the Marine Corps as a tender 18 year old from the hills of Oregon.  After recruit training (which, I'm sure you know, is infamous) and being stationed at Parris Island after graduation, I was a totally different person.  Strong, extremely capable, well trained in the art of war and survival,  confident beyond measure and much, much older than my peers back home.  My mother often spoke of that in her later years...the shock of change that took place In me...how proud she was that I was serving in the Corps and how proud she was I came through that recruit training and my hitch a better person.  I was not her little girl anymore.  I was her daughter...a fully rounded woman, who could probablty kill ya with one hand....,ha.,    I loved the Corps...and the Navy (where many of my relatives served) and to this day, I am living that life...inside my head, in my demeanor, in my personal life....and I'm pushing 75,  I watch my grandson over the past 3 years as he's grown into a man, a warrior, a Sailor......a strong and confident young man of 24.  Gone forever is that "Munchkin" of mine whom I doted on and enjoyed all of his young life.  I see now a womderful man, fully capable of making his own life...  In my heart, I hold that Munchkin....and always will.  In my eyes, I'm proud to see this wonderful man.

    Hi all - Happy Thursday!

Here's an article that was on CNN today about carriers in the Persian Gulf:

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/05/politics/no-aircraft-carrier-persian-...

  • too tall Joan

GrandmaBarB your words of wisdom are always on point.
Jacob94mom sorry your going through a rough time
B'sNukeMoM thanks for sharing that article & for all of your pics of encouragement that you send us.

I woke up to an email from my girl. It was short & sweet. She said there is 1 computer for 30 of them to use so I don't expect anymore.
Weapons depth is the spotlight this month & I gold my daughter she better be swan diving off the ship to get her pic taken for her momma to see her lol
  • Sherryl

LOL gotta say my daughter said she will not do the jump off the ship this go round, said it actually hurts!

    hope everyone is doing great

  • Jacob94mom

Happy Red Friday! One day at a time with foster daughter. :)
Got a FB message from my sailor son. He isn't liking his first underway. Said he is in a hot classroom basically 12 hours a day. He's in INDOC I guess. And the showers are mildewed and nasty. I told him to find something to clean it with then. Lol
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy RED shirt Friday!

Yep, I don't have to worry about my son jumping off the ship.  That will NEVER happen lol!  He's not a big fan of the ocean (go figure).

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Ewww - mildew in the showers doesn't sound nice :(  My son hasn't mentioned that before but he did say you don't want to go in them without shower sandals!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

  • DenverNavyMom

Jacob94mom------ ewwww! is that in the bathrooms on the ship??  Yes!  Spray it down before you get it!!!

Sherryl - Jump off the ship this go around???  What does that mean??!!  Off the carrier??  What!!????

  • Sherryl

Jacob94mom yes they jump off the ship:) and climb back up the ladder! only a few girls did it, mine did she said she had to try it once lol she said it hurt her neck its a long way before you land it that water... Have a wonderful weekend all

  • Sherryl

PS maybe you could send him a fan battery operated, I went one to my sailor and she still uses it :)

  • DenverNavyMom

@jacob94mom.... We're talking about the Truman right? Certainly they don't jump from the flight deck. It's 80 feet from the flight deck to the water. There must be a different location.
  • too tall Joan

just reread my last post, sorry for the typos. I meant weapons dept is the spotlight. I was kidding when I said about my daughter swan diving, meaning I want her to do something to get her pic taken. Lol as for them really jumping off the ship it isn't from the flight deck. They open the side doors (forget what that is called)& they jump from there. My daughter did it when they were deployed the last time & loved swimming in the Mediterranean. There are pics online if you do a Google search
  • Tricia51

Sailor is attached to the Truman but is based @ Whidbey Island with the Growlers.  Any other mom's sailor with this group of AT's

  • DenverNavyMom

@totalljoan - ok... Whew! I was thinking.... Surely not! Lol

@trica51 - I have friends who's son is stationed at whidby. Probably not a good idea to post his name here but he gave us a tour when we were visiting. Amazing surrounding country! Absolutely beautiful.
  • GrandmaBarB

You won't find mildew in showers in the military.  Pul-eeze gals.

And, it's always a good idea to wear shower shoes in any public facility.  Heck, we wore them for gym showers when I was in high school back in the 50's.

  • GrandmaBarB

Denver Navy Mom.  They jump from the Hanger Deck and swim around to the fantail.  It's called swim call.....and it is practicing "abandon ship" in case of emergency.  All are required to do it sooner or later.  Here's some photos....

  • GrandmaBarB

Jacom94mom...they jump from the Hanger Bay.

  • Sherryl

from the hangar bay is where they jump

  • DenverNavyMom

@GrandmaBarB - Thank you for the information.  I was feeling a bit concerned.  These photos actually look pretty cool. Thank you for sharing.

@Jacom94mom - Thank you as well!

  • DenverNavyMom

Does anyone know if the Navy will schedule an "Anchors Aweigh" type of event to see our Sailors off in November?

  • Tricia51

I have been wondering, as well, about  an "Anchors Aweigh" event.  I didn't get a chance to see my sailor leave & return from his last deployment.  I have promised myself that I will see his ship leave & return this time what ever it takes.

  • Sherryl

not sure about the anchors aweigh event but i know another mom and I are gonna try and put something together for those that want to get together:)

  • Sea Salt

What is Anchors Away?  I haven't hear when they are deploying yet except she informed me she MIGHT be able to come home for a bit in October.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Monday!

I would be interested in a gathering - not sure if I can make it from CA (especially since we were just there!), but if there's any chance I'll sure try!

  • Jacob94mom

Hi all- my son would jump in a heart beat! He was a high school diver.
The mildew was in the shower on the ship according to my sailor. I was just as surprised as you all.
An anchors aweigh gathering would be awesome we are planning to be there. Now they are saying they want to send him back to Pensacola for another C school. If that happens he would miss the first stage of deployment. He is not thrilled.
  • BoomMom

Hello all.  I believe my son would jump as well.  As far as anchor's away, maybe the ombudsmen would post something before hand.  I would think it would als be in the monthly newsletter.  Keep in mind that the Date or weekend of deployment would/should never be posted in this forum, but I assume our sailors will let us know.  I'd love to be there to support him and his wife (and will by then have an almost 2 month old son...).  It will be very difficult for him to leave so we'd like to be a support for the 2 of them.  With the next underway being longer than the current one, it appears he may NOT make it back for the birth unless they (mom and baby) hold out a few extra days and the ship returns a couple days earlier than scheduled.  I pray so, for them.  Have a wonderful Monday evening all.

  • pschip

Hello my son would jump. BoomMom I hope he gets to be there for the birth. My daughter in law is due in Feb. Will be very hard.
  • Tricia51

I would love to try to get together when they leave!  My sailor says that we probably wouldn't get to see him but I said that I want to see the ship leave & return.  Even if we don't see each other, all he just has to know I'm there watching him leave if god permits!

  • Coach Shelia

Good morning! I haven't been on in awhile. I hope you're all doing well! We want to be there for send off!!! I know they'll be busy, but I hope we can meet for breakfast, lunch, dinner or something or somewhere close to base! We will have fun for sure! Have a great week !

  • Coach Shelia

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

Oh - new babies to be - how exciting!  I hope it all works out for the sailors to be there ;-)

Jacobsmom - Tell your sailor not to worry about missing the first part of the deployment - there will still be plenty of time left for him lol!  But for his sake I hope it works out how he wants ;-)

    Have a great day!

  • Hope

Hooray - my sailor's going to be able to make it to his sister's wedding and a massive family reunion.  Hooray for engine troubles :)

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Good Morning all - WAVY news is reporting an aircraft fire on the flight deck of the Truman.  2 were injured but they are reporting nothing serious.  This is why they practice & practice - thank God it wasn't more serious. Extra prayers going up for the crew of the Truman and those injured.  Stay safe!

Awesome picture of an F/A-18E Hornet that was just released by the Navy - on the Truman!

An F/A-18E Hornet assigned to the Flying Eagles of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 122 prepares to launch from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). Harry S. • Jacob94mom

Good morning! A fire! Oh my! Glad to know there were no serious injuries.
I was thinking last night how cool it would be to go on deck to watch the Meteor showers this week. We usually go camping during this week so we can be away from the city lights to see them.
  • GrandmaBarB

And, that fire is why our Sailors practice, practice, practice and spend so much time underway and away from us.

Safety of the crew and the ship is always number one.

In all waters, under all circumstances....and all Sailors must know what to do immediately.  Constant vigilance and keep their skills sharp is Number 1.....

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

From the USS Truman FaceBook page

As many already know, last night there was an aircraft fire on the flight deck. The pilot of the aircraft ejected safely and landed on the flight deck. The pilot and a TRUMAN Sailor received medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries by the ship's medical department before being transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C. Their families have been directly notified.

The important take-away is that all involved are going to be okay. Our tho...ughts and prayers are with our shipmates and their families, as we wish them speedy recoveries.

Our Sailors routinely train to many emergencies including flight deck fires. Flight Deck personnel, Medical, Engineering, the Bridge team and many more acted instinctively to immediately contain and then quickly extinguish the fire. I am very proud of their quick and professional responses.

We don’t anticipate any changes to our scheduled return to home port or upcoming deployment. We'll keep you updated as we find out more information.
