Mamabear - welcome! I’m happy for you that your son was so moved about becoming a sailor. We mamas like nothing better than our kids to love what they’re doing. Your son will work hard at Nuke school, but it can be such a happy time for him. I know my son loved boot camp and loves Nuke school and the hard work. Totally embraces it. And he did NOT feel this way about college and left after about 2.5 years. I hope your son loves it too!

Happy Friday ladies. I have two things which may be of interest.
First off, for those of you wondering about sub life, here's a post from the Navy Times. First thing you will note is that the sailor is a Nuke. They are scarce when it comes to pictures so this alone is cool. Secondly it's on my SIL's sub. He's not in the video but still.. This is a public site so even if you don't have FB you can view the video. https://www.facebook.com/navytimes/videos/sub-life-1-the-head-milit...
Wow JayDee - that eagle is beautiful! That's so cool that it was in your yard too.
I saw that video on FB too - I couldn't believe it when the poor guy was standing (attempting to stand!) in the shower. yikes! Makes you really appreciate the sacrifices these men and women make for our freedom!
Oh, JayDee, that video was remarkable! When my son bought a house in the Charleston area 2 yrs ago the shower in the master was a wee bit small but bigger than they had on the carrier. But he said 1 day he brushed against the wall of the shower and had a flashback to the carrier and uncontrollably shuddered. You just didn't want to touch the walls but it was tough to avoid. I totally get it now! I wonder what the difference is between sub and carrier showers.
Meanwhile, that eagle is beautiful. One of my favorite birds. Lucky sighting!
Nancy Jo, thanks! I have showered on a carrier. There was plenty of room, nit too small. My biggest problem was dealing with the rolling from the ship.
I am wondering how things are going for our moms with sailors at GC? It is so strange to not know when someone is having a graduation coming up, as I have lost track. Anyone have an upcoming A school, PS, or Prototype graduation?
Mine is out in the fleet now, and mostly, I just know that he works a lot!! We touch base every so often on his days off, but they are few and far between it seems like at times. He notified me one day to let me know they were doing a drill, so that if I did happen to hear anything, I would know it was just a drill. I thought it was sweet of him, and I know he was thinking about my group here as well. I had to chuckle though, I don't follow most of the news feeds and so I would probably be the last one to hear if there was something.
Good morning! My sailor is back at Pearl after dive school and suppose to come out of quarantine this week. Their boat was just moved out of dry dock but still in shipyard. In some ways that makes contact easier but it's sure frustrating at times for my sailor. We have tried to just have regular check in by text so I know all is okay and that has worked pretty well. This last week we've been working on getting his truck lease bought out. We had to prepare a special power of attorney for me just for the truck, but once we had that it has made it pretty easy. Trying to think ahead so I can help while he's still in shipyard. :)
If anyone needs some advice on getting the power of attorney just private messenger me and I'll walk you through what I did.
Rakenator - Drills and such occur at different times based on the ships and their commands. You may not even hear anything about them. My son just knows that I prefer to hear from him, and if I did hear something elsewhere, that I knew it was a drill. This was a past event for him.
CSW - Glad to hear that you are able to get some things handled for your sailor!
My hubby gets his first vaccine today! He's in the medical field so he gets to move up the list - both my mom and MIL got their 2nd yesterday. I hope I can get mine within the next month. Fingers crossed!
Hello, Sea Sisters and Brothers! Have a question...does anyone know about the MAPPING program where commanders are able to advance sailors to a higher level, bypassing the advancement tests? What’s the criteria?
I want to suggest that you have a talk with your sailor about the importance of renter's insurance. It's fairly inexpensive and will cover them for many mishaps - USAA will also cover uniforms.
Ask them to look in to it before something happens. Better safe than sorry!
Appreciate the info, B’sNukeMoM! Fingers crossed it happens for my sailor.
Glad your hubby got his first vaccine. My hubby has had both injections, as had our daughter and sailor. Hubby and daughter are both in health care. Who knows when I will get mine but grateful for them!
I had my 2nd vaccine almost two weeks ago. Side effects were mild for me. A couple co-workers were sick for a day. My nurse sis and neice are waiting for the non mRNA vaccine. Maybe they will get the J&J vaccine... My sailor is waiting for FDA approval (not just EAU) or until it is mandatory. I personally was very happy to get it.
DsMom2020 - I hope I can get mine soon - just waiting for them to drop the age group down. Hubby was good with his - just a little sore arm today.
We had some much needed rain yesterday - not a lot but it helped. Today the sun is shining...trying to put together a visit to MI to see B&C. We were looking at July but C said how about June and surprise B for his birthday. So we might be able to make that work! I sure hope so.
B'sNukeMom - thanks for answering Tulip's question, I didn't know what she was asking. I am doing well, just busy. I hope you can make a visit soon. We are talking about a summer visit this year that was suppose to have happened last year, we shall see.
DsMom2020 - glad to hear you did well with your shots!
Please all let's take a special moment today to pray for our sailors, wherever they may be. May God keep them safe and strong as they work to keep our country and our world safe. May God also pour out blessings on the navy families standing behind and beside our brave protectors.
Hi ladies. So my son told me that after the 5k run he did on Thursday that his shin splints are so bad that it is hard to walk. A few weeks ago, I had sent him new running shoes with good arch support, compression socks and ice packs - all to help with shin splints (he didn’t use any of it). His petty officer is worried he has or could get stress fractures. He was told to go to an appointment on Friday but it turned out to be an appointment to get an appointment for an eval. Goes Monday. Does anyone have experience with what happens if he can’t run and do the required PT and/or dash for cash. His times were good prior to this.
On a very positive note, he advanced from 3rd academically in his class to 2nd. I’m so proud of his continued efforts. Was worried he’d run out of steam but he has such a great attitude about putting in more than 100%. He also really likes helping his classmates. I love the qualities the Navy is bringing out of him!
D'sMom, I only heard of them having problems with shin splints in Boot Camp, I hope he will be ok. I will be sure to say a prayer for him today, perhaps there is a special diet to help improve his bones or something.
DS mom I've heard of some being allowed to do the bike for certain conditions. Maybe that will apply to this situation as well. I'm sure he's not the first and won't be the last so the Navy likely has a plan.
D’s Mom, if it is shin splints, massaging the back of the calves, especially the lower part, is very helpful for me. I teach high impact cardio classes and get them often. Praying for the situation to work out well.
Good Morning everyone! I had a nice visit with some of my family I don't get to see often and wasn't able to reply yesterday.
DsMom2020 - I really have no answers for you, but I recall my sailor saying that part of the problem with shin splints has to do with an improper running form. So, I would suggest maybe doing a Google search as well. My son also much preferred his running shoes from home versus the ones they were given at BC.
MoMom - you mentioned massaging the back of the calves, would doing flex exercises with the foot help as well, to help the tendon stretch? I am having to do that with my feet as they tighten up in the night while I am sleeping. In the past, they did the 5K run in the morning, unless it was too cold. It might be DsMom that your son also needs to stretch more. Stress fractures was what we usually heard about SRs getting rolled back during BC. Now there is so much about other issues that it almost is like the stress fractures and shin splints went away.
Rakenator - All the best to your sailor as he is doing Prototype. Do you have a projected graduation date? Without the ceremonies we often miss sharing in our congratulations.
No Advise on shin splits. Mine did get new running sneaks during A school and did not use the Navy issued ones after that. He also got inserts for his boots that a friends son, who is a Green Barrett, recommended.
I have seen posts, I think in FB, about getting ahead a bit in Prototype gives you a cushion if something happens. I shared this with my son who dismissed me, I thought. He nows say if you can he recommends it. He was ahead a bit and got a day off so the staff could work with the others who were behind after about 5 weeks. So it paid off with a little bonus day.
I spoke with him last night and he is in ROM because one of his instructors has COIVD. My son is fine but restricted to his room and kitchen in the apartment he shares. Interestingly his roommates did not have the same instructor and were told they did not have to ROM even with a roommate in ROM. Again mine is fine with no symptoms at all. He is ahead again and will now only have to catch up a little. For those in his group who are not ahead it is going to be a touch few weeks with extra hours on the already long days so they do not fall too far behind.
Also he is sending more $$ because he can not go to the store for food and did not want to ask his roommates. Home 24/7 so grubhubbing it. As a savor he is not thrilled but here too advises having shelve stable food on hand and a little extra in the bank just in case. I thought it funny I have to admit. Oh the lessons he is learning.
A recent real life story/advise for those with sailors in the other levels of training.
I am surprised they don't have prototype graduation.... As the final segment, it would seem to be the most important. Does anyone know who is allowed to attend the graduations for A School and Power School? Before Covid and now?
I did send my son information from google on running technique. Since he did not use the new shoes, compression socks and ice packs that I mailed, I have to wonder if he adjusted his running technique. Since his legs were already bothering him, I have to wonder if it was too late. Maybe now that it has gotten worse, he will be more open minded. I will try again... I did send a text about massaging his calves but no response. I hope he does it.
I can send inserts for the boots or might the Navy recommend or have something for him?
NewAdventures - good advise on getting ahead just in case. I hope your son stays healthy.
Rakenator - I am glad that you were able to see your sailor for a time and do some sightseeing as well. We walked past a few alligators at one of the plantations that we visited and that was just slightly eerie!! It is sad that Prototype graduation has been cancelled completely, but part of it, they had a public location for it. I am hopeful that in the future, they will be able to bring it back. Thanks for the update!!
DsMom2020 - It only just occurred to me that the reason Prototype graduation was at the USS Yorktown, is because there wasn't a location for them to have the graduation where our sailors train. As it was for A school and PS graduation, our sailors had to give everyone's name and information for the visitors to be vetted, and we had to have our driver's license and such, similar to what was needed for PIR. You are being allowed on a military base and have to follow all of their protocols. Immediate family was allowed as long as they were on the sailor's list.
New Adventures - tried to friend you but I can't seem to find you to send the request. Would love the info on the running store for my son to get shoe inserts. Maybe even better running shoes.

New Adventures- Life lessons for sure!
