Hello to all.I am new to this group. My son graduates bootcamp 5/31/13 & will be going to Groton for sub school. My husband is a retired submariner.(24 yrs). Thanks for adding me to this!

  • Connie foaling-lady (Groton)

Son is back from his first time out on the boat. Says the food is pretty good, incl. pizza night once a week (guys are so easy to please ... there's no Dairy Queen on board so how good can it be?!). Wish I could send some SpongeBob bedsheets, as in ... sing it ... "Who lives in a submarine under the sea?" Anyway, now I have my first underway out of the way, and it wasn't too bad (it's all about the mom, right?).

  • heebsmom

Welcome Karen I hope you can go to your sons PIR.
Connie:Glad the underway went well, my son was disappointed in the food on his sub, he is a little over weight and said the food too starchy & fattening , but it is hard to have fresh fruit and veggies right?
  • Karen

Thanks heebsmom! Yes I am going to my son's PIR May 31.Travel plans made for his gf & I.Staying at Navy Lodge.Hope it is clean! LOL

  • Doreen ⚓⚓

My son's PIR is June 21st. Ship 09 DIV 236

  • submomIII

Connie foaling-lady - LOVE the Spongebob reference!!!!!!!!!!!  I just sang it to my son (doesn't leave for BC until August), who also thought it was great.  Got to keep that one in mind!  Thanks for sharing.

  • tina41

    hello all!!

Karen-- we stayed at the navy lodge a couple years ago for PIR.  it was nice then!!  PIR is awesome!!!

  • William in Nashua

They cooks were laying out sheets of pizza when we toured my son's boat. It looked and smelled delicious. We briefly stuck our heads in because they were busy serving the food. The walkin freezer, I expected everything to be stored neatly on steel racks but it was crammed with frozen food from floor to ceiling in a huge pile. If you worry about them running out of food, don't. My son says the food on the boat is better than the galley at the sub base.

  • PattyC

Hello!!! My son entered BC 4/25/13 and will then move on to Groton for Sub School. I look forward to learning all that this group offers!

  • heebsmom

    Welcome PattyC:
I just watched "SuperStructures Seawolf" I got a FB link from our Ombudsman, but you can watch it on Hulu, just google it. Even if your son is on a boomer or fast attack I think it good to watch, it is about an hour long and does have commercials, enjoy: )

Hello! I am new to this site.  My SR's PIR is 6/7/2013 DIV 214, and will go to Connecticut for Sub training. I am so proud of him! I can't wait to see him at PIR! Keeping him and all military in prayer.

  • Shea

My son graduates from "A" school for sonar tech on July 3.  He did'nt think there was any type of ceremony but just told me this week that there is.  Can anyone out there tell me the scope of this event.  Is it anything like PIR? Thanks in advance!

  • Kathy

My graduated in 2009 from A school for ET if he is at Groton, CT.  They will have a small little ceremony nothing big like PIR.  If you like by go ahead and go.  My son took some photos for me, but is a nice little ceremony with there class and sometimes they have wives and parents there.  I did not go because at the time I lived in Louisiana and we were in full swing of Mardi Gras.  I got leave after A school so it was not worth it for me to go up there.

  • Shea

Thanks Kathy.  Yes he is in Groton.  I will be up there to visit him for just a weekend in 3 weeks.  I'm in Louisiana and if my son had known earlier I would have waited to go up.  I'm toying with driving up and then he can travel back home with us as he will have some time off before he heads to his duty station.  It's a long drive but we drove to Chicago for PIR!

  • Johanna

He Shea, my son graduates May 22nd. He is very excited for us to go. We only live labour an hour and a half from Groton, so several shipmates come home with him on the weekends. Not sure their families will be there, so my husband and I will be cheering for a bunch of them and taking pics!
  • sonia

Hi. I went to my son's graduation from A school in Groton last March. He had other graduations during his time there, we just chose to attend the final one because it is quite a trip from El Paso. The ceremony was small, but nice. The main thing was my son was thrilled to have us there. It was well worth the trip. Make sure to visit the sub museum there! Now my son is loving life in Hawaii.
  • Johanna

Hi Yolanda, My Son is also a Sonar Tech. We have two Sailors but will only have Mothers Day with one. I really liked your words about missing your son. We are very lucky that both Sailors are close. I hope you hear from your son soon!
    Happy Mothers Day.
  • SMLMOM

Is anyone else's SR in Ship 3 Div 213?  it seems there are only a few.  If so has anyone heard from her/him?  I'm missing mine something terrible especially since I have not received letters or phone calls in two weeks?   I know they are working hard and no news is good news.  Just wishing for a quick note from him so that I know how he's doing... He will be going to BESS and A school in Groton CT for sub and MT training.  27 more days.. Gonna be a "hell" month on me.

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

My other sailor "son" (my sailor's best friend) graduates today then heads home for a few weeks before he reports to Norfolk so I will be able to see at least one of my boys around Mother's Day.  I feel for those of you whose sons and daughters won't be able to call you on your special day but you know that they are thinking of you all the time.

  • Scrapmom61

Shea -- my son graduated from A School last month. The ceremony was small and very informal. The officers offered to stop at any time so that family could get pictures and they did indeed stop several times for people to get pictures. We were very glad that we lived close enough to attend. Our son was able to be home for 2 weeks before leaving for Guam.
  • tina41

    Happy Mothers Day!!!

    May God Bless you all!!

  • Johanna

Happy Mothers Day to the most amazing Mom's!!!
  • LaxDogsMom

    Hi All.

My son will be graduating BC on 5/24/2013 and is then headed to Groton for BESS.  I'm sure I'll be dialed into this group on a regular basis and I love that it is here.  His assignment was to Sonar Tech and we are excited for the possibilities and challenges that lay ahead for him.  Happy Mother's Day!

  • Shea

MarlaCPA--My son graduates in Sonar on July 3, he goes to class in the evenings.  When does your son finish?  We are from Louisiana and my son did not care for the cold much either!  My mom nicknamed him the "Cajun Popsicle"!

  • Johanna

MarlaCPA, my son Grads Sonar May 22, also classes in the evening, but he is an
avid " knuckle dragger"... Snow Boarder. He is my snow kid through and through.
  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

My son's best friend just graduated from Groton and will be heading to Norfolk after a short time at home. He's a MM. Is this still the best site to keep informed about what he's going to go through?  I don't post much but I've learned a lot from reading your posts and I want to be able to support him when he gets deployed.

  • Rhonda8881

Hello Shea!!!  I am originally from Louisiana and my sailor was born at the Womens Hospital where you live. It had been open for less than a year I think!

We drove to Chicago but flew to Groton when my sailor was graduating A school.  It was too far to drive for my husband's liking.  We did rent a vehicle while there and it was nice to have one to go wherever we chose.  Good luck on your drive.

  • Jeffsmom1380

My son returned recently from his sea trials.  He earned his dolphins!

  • Johanna

    Jeffsmom1380.. HOOYAH!!
  • NavyMomLG

    Great news Jeffsmom1380 - congratulations!

  • Nise615

I have a question, do you know if the Navy helps pay for transporting my son's car to him in San Diego?

  • Nana Donna (nanaTo2Saliors)

Nise No the navy does no pay for transporting car that is an expense your son will have to pay.  We transported my grandson's car from Arizona to New Hampshire lat year

  • Mark

Nise615 - If he is driving from Groton to San Diego instead of flying, that expense can be covered, but I would think arrangements have to made before leaving Groton.  If you're talking about simply shipping his car from the Chicago area to San Diego though, Nana Donna is correct.

  • Nise615

Thank you Mark1 and Nana Donna for the information.  I am looking into transportation companies right now and calling the BBB to make sure they are reliable.

  • heebsmom

Nise615: My son paid $900 to have a Company move his car from SC to Wa. It was the end of Dec. so because of winter weather and if he flew he would have more time with family. But, beware of bad companies. get references. The company transported his car on an outside trailer so it was pretty dirty when it got here.
  • Nana Donna (nanaTo2Saliors)

Nise - Last March when we shipped my grandsons car from AZ to CT it was $750.  The guy was great and got the car there is the time he said he would.  He also gave a military discount.  I can give you his name/info if you are interested.

  • AlohagirlinCA (Mom of MT)

OK so it's my turn to have braggin rights...my Son, who on the Blue Crew on the HMJ, had gonw out and back with them once...then instead of taking leave like alot of the guys did, he turned around and went right back out with the Gold Crew to work more on his quals...on the day they were coming back, he got his last needed signature and had his Dolphins pinned on!  For a guy that has only been assigned to his boat for around 3 months...I am soooo PROUD!!!  The look of Pride he had on his face on Skype when he showed me his certificate and  Dolphins, was just awesome!!!  Here's to you Son!

  • AlohagirlinCA (Mom of MT)

    Thanks yvette! I will!

  • Connie foaling-lady (Groton)

Yikes Dee, you mean if a sailor is assigned to Hawaii, he has to pay to have his truck/car moved? My son was going to buy a new truck in the States (cheaper in the Lower 48), fill it with his stuff, then have it shipped to his new base next year ... but will have to rethink this if it's based on weight.

  • Rhonda8881

Connie- when a sailor has orders for Hawaii the Navy pays to ship 1 vehicle for them. It can take up to a month for it to arrive (last I heard). BUT--- the car has to be shipped from Groton (actually in NJ when my son was there).  The sailor cannot drive the car anywhere else and have it shipped.

My son went in October of 2007 and it was 4 weeks before his car arrived.  He did put things in the car to have shipped.  But I would not place anything valuable in the vehicle.

  • Rhonda8881

My son has been there longer, maybe things have changed.  Used to be if you were moving due to orders the Navy paid to have 1 vehicle moved to your new location or paid your expenses if you drove.  But only from your old base to the new one.

Could be one of the cuts made to save money.  If I am wrong I apologize.  My sailor has been at his first assignment for almost 6 years now.

  • terryd (Ship 03 Div 337)

Our son reported to Hawaii in April. The Navy paid for his car to be shipped from Groton to Hawaii.  It took about 4 weeks and he could not ship anything in it.

  • Connie foaling-lady (Groton)

Thanks everybody ... hmm.  I guess when my son reports to Hawaii, my plan to stow away in his truck won't work, not if it takes 4 weeks to get there! :) Have to save my pennies for airfare to visit him instead.

  • Michimom (MM Nuke Mom)

My son reported to Hawaii in November.  The Navy would have paid to ship his car to Hawaii, but he opted to sell it to a friend instead.  He left from home (Michigan) and the closest place he could have shipped the car from is in St. Louis, MO.  His car was older car (2002) and he just figured it was easier to sell it and buy something else after he got to Hawaii.  He used the bus and relied on friends for transportation . . .until a few weeks ago.  After saving up, he bought a brand spankin' new car!  A gorgeous blue.  I'm thinking there won't be a whole lot of miles put on that car in Hawaii.  LOL

Hello all!  My son will PIR on June 7th and will be shipping out to Groton for sub school so I wanted to say hello!  I'm currently in the Boot Camp for Moms group and the June 7th PIR-so many wonderful, supportive people!!  I'm sure I'll find the same here!!

  • ProudNavyMom#1

These ladies/girlfriends/boyfriends/loved ones are an awesome support group! You will learn a lot, I have! God bless,

  • mrsb

    Thank you ProudNavyMom#1!

  • tysmom

There is also a Groton group which helps you through those schools. Many moms/gfs on there too. Some seasoned moms on that site also. Its the ride of your life. And the more support you have the better it is.

My sailor is deployed and I am getting emails, but said he was going "dark" for a while. I better keep writing this time even though he does not get them right away.Learned my lesson. Last time I made the mistake of sending only a couple in three weeks and I think he felt pretty sad.

MRSB: Go to PIR if at all possible. It will give you goose bumps. When they come through that door.....wonderful memories!!!!

  • mrsb

Hello tysmom!  I will definitely be at PIR!!  I don't think I could miss that for anything!!  My friend's son just went through a couple of weeks ago and she had nothing but great things to say about it.  I can hardly wait to see and hug my son!!  I will really try not to get mascara on his dress whites-if I don't cry he will think there is something wrong with me!!  LOL
