I am fairly new to it also! Yes they do get mail on the ship & it might possibly be by carrier pigeon!! I'm told it is dropped off by helicopter! I do not know what the Weps is...this is a learning experience for sure!!
So how is everyone doing? A bit choked up yesterday! Have you all found the ombudsman on facebook? "mason ombudsman" Its also a great place to stay in touch. She gives suggestions and has info. She also answers facebook messages.
Choked up? Me? I'm getting ready for work and my phone dings with a text message. The entire message: "See you in nine months". Of course I had to re-apply my make up. (Turns out blotchy red with shiny snot accents is not a good look for me. Who knew?) What kind of mean kid sends his mother a text message like that? I mean, sure, I grounded him from the X-box when he didn't do his homework, but there's no need to get nasty! To think he's been holding a grudge all this time!
thank you for the info on the mason ombudsman on facebook! The first day was rotten for me! I too received a text from my sailor that choked me up! So where do you live? Where any of you able to be there to watch them leave on Monday? I live in NE & am hoping to make it to Norfolk to see them come home!
Hi, I am a uss mason wife. I live in Virginia and said goodbye to my sailor at the pier. Seeing them get onto that ship to leave is incredibly hard. I am looking forward to their safe return, and cannot wait to see my sailor again.
If you are going to be in town for homecoming, there is a night before party and homecoming party. Both parties need volunteers and its a great way to get to know other members of the Mason family. If you are in the area, each month a Family Readiness meeting is held aswell.
We are way out in the midwest but have already decided we will be there for homecoming. Any and all info that will help us plan for that will be appreciated.
If you need a place to stay that is close to base, there is the Navy Lodge that is located down the street from Gate 5. I also recommend getting your base pass for your vehicle as early in the day as possible. The pass & ID office is directly across from gate 5. You will need your drivers license, and car insurance card. The phone number to Pass & ID is 757-322-2978.
I am also from the midwest, Nebraska actually! I plan on making the trip to Virginia when they get home! Our family stayed at the Navy Lodge last summer, we liked the location & we were satisfied with our rooms!
This is probably a dumb question but oh well. How much ahead of time will we know when homecoming will be? I understand that for operational security they don't like to post exactly when what will be where. But for those of us who have to travel, get time off work, make reservations etc how much advanced notice will we get? I want to be one of those idiots standing on the pier with a flag waving, screaming, and crying. (Which is exactly why my son wont want me to know, but it's a mother's duty to keep her son humble by embarrassing him to death from time to time). I know that things can always change at the last minute and that Navy time and Mom time have very little in common but I'm just trying to get a general idea.
By Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group Public Affairs Office
USS HARRY S. TRUMAN, At Sea (NNS) (NNS) -- Ships and embarked squadrons from Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HST CSG) entered U.S. 6th Fleet's area of responsibility (AOR), July 26 and 29th.
Guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and guided-missile destroyers USS Mason (DDG 87) and USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), entered July 26, followed by strike group flagship and aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) and guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64) July 29.
This is the first time HST CSG has entered the 6th Fleet AOR since its last deployment in 2010.
While in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, HST CSG will be supporting maritime security operations (MSO) and theater security cooperation efforts. MSO are set conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment and complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations.
If you have not yet looked in to the Holiday project take a look . NAVY FOR MOM's HOLIDAY PROJECT. This will be my third year of involvement. It's tons of fun and the guys and gals are very appreciative. You can do a little or a lot. The main group adopts whole aircraft carriers with crews of over 5000. The Mason (mighty though she is) presents a much smaller task. What do you think.
Ladies and gentlemen! If I might have a few moments of your time, I have a little speech. My only child left for RTC in November two years ago. That meant he was away for all the Holidays. As you know only too well, it was not an easy eight weeks for me. (Okay... maybe it was no day at the beach for him either... but it's all about ME, right?) One thing that helped immensely was getting involved in the Navy for Moms Holiday Project. Sending out goody packages to the crew of the USS Stennis kept me busy, gave me something to focus on, and cheered up the Holidays for the sailors out at sea. Some of them e-mailed thanks, told me that the Navy had been good to them, and wished me and my son well. I cannot tell you what it meant to me. I am not trying to push anyone to get involved. Times are tight and some of us have a lot of obligations. I just wanted everyone to be aware of the project and the opportunity. I have taken part the last two years and had a blast! If you are interested check out the group HOLIDAY PROJECT. You can read about what's involved, the history, some of the thank yous that people have posted in the past. In addition, FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY!!! you can vote for which ship we adopt this year (did I sound like a carnival barker there? I did that on purpose.) Voting is heavy right now for the USS Harry S Truman. Pat, the leader of the project, thinks that trying to take on the whole strike group would be too big a task. Maybe she's right. But I hope not! Another alternative is that we see if friends and family of the Mason want to have a mini Holiday project and adopt our OWN ship. (About 380 goodie bags.) We have to get permission to go forward so nothing is for sure yet. (For some reason the Navy thinks that if strangers suddenly bombard a ship with hundreds of packages in a few week period they need to know in advance. What's that about?) Once again, I'm not trying to push anyone to get involved. But if you think you would enjoy this, let me know what you think. I'm game if you are!!
my son is aboard the Mason..I would love to help with any Christmas project you do....please let me know how..it would make me fell a little better doing something...thank you Sam's Mom
Okay, I' messed up. by packing the polls. Don"t vote unless you're a member of the group and plan to be part of the project. (But that's really easy to do if you promise to be a good Christmas elf.
I know exactly how you feel, Sam's Mom. It made a huge difference for me. Not a surprise though. When I was working as a nurse at the psych hospital I learned that it's always easier to do something than to notdo something. If you tell someone not to think of pink elephants of course that's the first thought that pops into their heads and it's impossible to get it out. If you tell them that whenever they start to think of pink elephants they should replace those images with purple giraffes, that is a whole lot easier. Don't be sad, don't be lonely, don't be worried for your sailor. Yeah, right. When you find yourself stuck on a negative loop, go shopping for your goodie bags and think how many sailor's Christmas you're going to brighten. I can dothat!
Hello everyone! My name is Ericka and I am hosting a fundraiser for the USS MASON FRG to raise funds for Homecoming. If you are interested in supporting the event and the ship, please pm or email me (erickaubri@gmail.com) your email so that I can send you the information. You do not need to be at the actual event in order to give your support. Due to FRG rules, I can not post the information publicly. If you have any questions, I'm more than happy to answer them. I hope to hear from you all soon.
Hello again! My husband is on the Mason. Being able to plan this fundraiser with FRG has helped me keep my mind busy. Having the opportunity to help make Homecoming that much better makes me proud to be a Mason wife. Don't miss out on the chance to support the FRG and their efforts. If you would like more information on the fundraiser, please email me (erickaubri@gmail.com) so that I can send you the information. Have a great day everyone and keep your heads up. They will be home before you know it. :)
Just joined this site because I found it googling USS Mason the other day looking for other wives with hubby's who are deployed on it. I am MA1's wife. He's the only MA on the ship, so I don't know very many other wives and thought this might be helpful during their underweigh.
Oh and I also had an unexpected project start up on FB for our Mason guys. I had asked a general question out to my family and friends on there that if they wanted to send a sailor a box or letters I could get some names if they were interested. My response was HUGE. Big enough that I had to start a FB separate FB page and named it 'Surprises for Sailors' I have over 150 boxes from people all over the US now being shipped to our guys aboard the Mason. If you know anyone that might be interested in sending care boxes to sailors who wouldn't otherwise receive anything have them find the page on FB. OR if you have a name of your sailor or their friends on the Mason let me know and I will add them to my list to receive.
Some of the people have actually 'adopted' their sailor for the whole deployment and are sending a box a month to them. It's amazing the support that the page has gotten in just the 3 short weeks since I started it.
Mssg me if you have any questions about it... I would love to add some more sailors to my list to get care boxes. =O)
Okay, navymommo. If you think someone would get a chuckle out of it.
More years ago than I care to recall, I was twenty years old and arrived at the same conclusion that many twenty year olds do. That a little geography between me and my family would be a good thing. Even more geography would be even better! So I packed up all my worldly goods (which didn't take long) and moved from Illinois to Colorado. My room-mate and I were not exactly rolling in cash (we were twenty after all) and did not have a phone in our apartment. We did have a view of the mountains and a balcony and a good stereo, so we thought we were livin' the dream. The lack of a telephone didn't bother us a bit. My mother sent me a letter with a self addressed, stamped, post-card enclosed and I thought it was a pretty good joke.
Until one day there was a knock at the door. I opened the door to a police woman. She verified my identity, gave me a scrap of paper with some familiar numbers on it and with a wry half smile said, "will you please call your grandmother? She's worried about you."
My grandmother called the cops because I hadn't written????? Seriously????? Are you kidding me?????
(It may tell you something about my grandmother to know that while I was embarrassed, I wasn't all that surprised.)
Is there a point to this story? Yes, yes there is.
Paybacks are hell, huh, Mom?
More than a month after they sailed I finally got an e-mail from my son. You know what they say about Karma!
Hang in there, friends. We raised them to be strong, independent, productive adults. I guess we did a pretty darned good job!
Hello, all. How is everyone holding up? I got tired of waiting to hear from command and e-mailed my son about sending Christmas goodie bags. He ran it by his chief who was really excited about the idea so I'm going forward.
I started buying $0.88 bottles of Tylenol and Ibuprofen at Wal-mart during the summer. I've got Ramen noodles, peanut butter crackers, and powdered single serve drink mixes. I got over fifty tooth brushes donate by my dentist (who is still an evil man who likes to torture me but may have some redeeming qualities). My son's chief told him that tuna packets are in big demand. I'm going shopping!
My husband and I don't have a lot of obligations at Christmas (just the one kid in the navy, no grandkids, small families) and I've been planning this since last Christmas, so I can afford to send about 50 packages. I know not everyone is in the same position and times are tight. If everyone who sends their sailor something would add a little goodie bag or two to be given away we could brighten a lot of lives. It doesn't have to be lavish. Just something to let them know we're thinking of them.
In order to be guaranteed delivery by Christmas mail no later than Nov. 14. It's my third year doing this so if you have any questions let me know.
I know this is last minute. Don't feel bad if you can't manage it at such late notice.
Hi USS Mason Moms, The USS Mason is the February adoption for Molly's Adopt A Sailor! Come to our page and join the fun!! BTW, we are doing a Mardi Gras theme!
Is anyone traveling to Norfolk for homecoming? I am trying to make motel reservations & just wondered if anyone had any good advice on a motel choice that is close to the base!
We are driving from Illinois to Virginia. Can't give you any advice except hang loose and roll with the waves. There will be rooms of some sort. It's a touristy area! I don't know where we'll wind up but it has to be a whole lot close to my sailor son than I have been for the past nine months!! I can't wait!!!!!!
We will be staying at the Navy Lodge. Are any of the moms here aware of the Surprise for Sailors on the USS Mason Facebook page. They have done some pretty incredible things for our kids while they have been deployed. They have had awesome fundraisers and organized volunteers to send boxes to our sailors once a month. I adopted 4 sailors during the deployment. They have some great fundraisers going on for the sailors too. If your interested in finding out about the fundraiser or having a last minute fundraiser in your neck of the woods please let me know. All the proceeds go to the sailors homecoming!! Lets make this a memorable on for them!! My email is erinmtodd@yahoo.com. Also there is a site called buildasign.com they will make a sign designed by you for free all you have to pay is shipping and handling. I just got my sign it came out awesome!! I cant wait to bring it to the dock!
We stayed at the Navy Lodge when we visited our son last summer. I was under the impression that you couldn't check in unless you have your sailor with you. We would like to stay there again, but we will be coming in the day before, so that probably won't work for us, but we really liked it the Lodge.
