I have a question for veteran EOD dive school ... There is a graduation and I would love to go see my son I am just wondering if parents can go to the graduation and also where is the closest hotel to the base. And if you did go what was the experience that you had.

  • QMGsmom

Hello everyone,, Its been a little while since Ive been here. My son is in the middle of dive schoel, aafter being rolled the first time. It was a blessing and benefited him. It took him a litte realize it but he was so sick from the endless program, black moled in GL dove prep training, moms just keep them focused and sometimes they have to work thru it. THey will drop your son ealry if they can. The  first 2 weeks of dive pre and dve schol are are hard and looking for any weakness in the sailors.

I hope everyone is doing well...!!!

  • DJsmom

He's earned Blue and Gold!  HOORAH!!

  • roxysmom1

My son graduates from boot camp the end of August.  He has an EOD contract.  Does he stay in Great Lakes for a little while after graduation and then go on to Florida?

  • amandachristine

roxysmom1, He'll stay in Great Lakes for a few weeks, depending on when the next EOD class starts. There is a two week EOD prep course at Great Lakes. Once he completes this, he will go to Panama City Beach, FL for Dive School which is 8 weeks long. After finishing Dive School he will go to Naval School Explosive Ordinance Disposal at Eglin AFB, in Fort Walton Beach, FL.

    https://www.netc.navy.mil/centers/ceneoddive/ndstc/Courses.aspx?ID=0
shows when the different classes convene at PCB &when the graduate to move in to EOD school.

This is the Center For Explosive Ordinance Disposal& Diving& is very informative.

    Hope that was helpful!

  • roxysmom1

Thanks amandachristine.  Can they have visitors when they make it to  Florida training?

  • amandachristine

They can have visitors. NSA Panama City is not nearly as restricted as NSTC Great Lakes. They are not authorized leave while at NSA Panama City, though, so if you do intend on visiting make sure it is on a duty-free weekend so you can make the most of your visit.

  • DJsmom

@amandachristine the link doesnt work is there another site or can you redo the link? Thanks

  • amandachristine

@DJsmom, when you click the first link, at the top select the tab that says "EOD A School Phase One"

  • supernavymommy(PIR MAY 04/04/811

My son told me that the graduation might be like the one in GL but the one after EOD school is more celebrated with a larger ceremony. I am going to Panama City to see him this weekend and should have more info on that.

Also tell your sailors to REST REST when they can before they get to Dive School, it is hard.

Anyone wants more info send me a message here and I will answer any questions. Might not be until next week when I get back.

  • MamaG

To supernavymommy, my son has an EOD contract and is currently at Boot Camp. After EOD prep school do they get any time to come home before starting their training in Florida?  All his buddies keep asking if he'll get to come home for a couple of days before heading on.

  • mom of 11 ship 04 div 814

The drop rate forEOD prep is huge. The current class only 6 of 29 made it. The class before they dropped well over half. They do not get to come home before leaving for FL. If he gets dropped from EOD prep then I dont know what happens.
  • Regina

MamaG, My son is in EOD school right now and they do not get to come before heading to Florida.  If you are close you can go visit him we did.  I don't know about dive prep, but they can have cars in dive school. If he has one you can take it to him.

  • MamaG

    Regina, thanks for the information.

  • DJsmom

My son graduated Dive School today!! Moving on up to EOD School now!! Such a proud Mommie I am!! Eglin here he comes ... Congrats to all in 12-50 EOD Navy Dive HOOYAH!!

  • supernavymommy(PIR MAY 04/04/811

Home after seeing my sailor and boy is it a VERY hard 9 weeks. He was rolled once because he missed some bay swims.

Also we did ask some of the guys that just graduated last friday and the ceremony was less of a big deal than pre-dive....so I guess that means no family invited.

Base is much easier to get on with your sailor and your ID's plus car info. A very small base.

One quick note, they do have cabins that you can rent by the water. don't know prices but there are 4 of them also there is a hotel and that is where the guys stay and again don't know prices on that.

My son said anyone going into dive tell them to practice with fins, that really adds a lot of stress on their legs/hips.

DJsmom, congrats to your son!! I know he worked for that!!!

  • supernavymommy(PIR MAY 04/04/811

One more thing, my son asked if he could take liberty anytime and he was told no since he is still a student. He has hoping to take time off while he was waited to class up but no go.

  • DJsmom

Thanks @ supenavymommy ... Yes my son did earn that. Thank God. He is also doing fantastic in school as of now. I pray every day he continues. I have said this to him once ... "Where is my son and what have you done with him?"  I have always know he had it in him and it is because he is now doing something that HE wants and he will EXCEL!!

  • DJsmom

How is everyone and their sailors doing?

  • dnbluvsboxers

I just joined this group to learn a little bit more about EOD prep.  My son is in BC just arrived Thursday 12/13 and has an EOD contract.

  • Karenlee

To Dinab, My son is EOD but he did not have a contract when he went to bc. He was in the fleet a little over 2 years before he tried for EOD. He will be home next week so I'll ask him but I do know that he needs to swim, swim, swim to get through intensive swim. I don't know if bc is different for someone with an EOD contract.
  • dnbluvsboxers

Karenlee, I believe BC is same only they are in a different division.  They have to train to become Sailors first.

  • Karenlee

Dinab, EOD is a very amazing group of guys and a few girls. They become their family. School is very hard but well worth the reward at the end. My son is doing  underwater demo.I think that going in with a contract for EOD thry may train (pt) differently. They all have a min. standard to achieve but with EOD-more is always better.

  • Regina

My son just graduated EOD school in November .  He did go in with an EOD contract, he was in a 800 division in boot camp. The only difference is they train harder and  get up a little earlier than the regular divisions. I think they have more PST's also.  My son loves what he is doing and can't wait to get to his permant duty station.

  • SpecialK

dinab302 - My son has and EOD challenge contract too and he graduates from BC this Friday 12/21/12.  He did say their BC is much more challenging and the minimum requirements are higher.

  • dnbluvsboxers

Donna congrats to you and your son!  We have a ways to go as I just received his box today!

Ragina I cant wait for the next steps. How was eod prep?

A little extra PT and earlier days cant hurt! He is ready!

  • Karenlee

Congrads to your sons that are PIR on friday. That is a very special day.  EOD graduation is a very special and emotional day also.

  • Regina

dinab302-   Unless things have changed there is no EOD prep, they do have dive prep ( for 3 - 4 weeks ) a lot of swimming and running to get ready for dive school in Panama City FL. ( 9 weeks ) before heading to Fort Eglin in fort Walton FL ( 42 weeks). Yes EOD graduation was awesome if can go you should these young men worked very hard for 42 weeks and it is a very proud moment I am so glad we went. My son is home right now if I can catch him I'll ask him what all they did during dive prep, wish me luck (LOL).

  • dnbluvsboxers

Oh yes, that's what I meant, lol Dive Prep...enjoy your time with your son.

SpecialK- congrats to u and your son too!

I wouldn't miss PIR for the world, but first I need that letter to tell me when lol.

  • SpecialK

Donna - Yes we are going.  Our flight leaves Atlanta at 10:00 on Thursday morning so I am praying the weather holds out until we get there.  We also plan on attending Sarge's meet and greet Thursday night if all goes as planned.  Is your son Ship 04/Div 803?

  • dnbluvsboxers

Donna and Special K - How was PIR!  Congrats to all!  Happy New Year to all!

  • Dancemom2002

Wondering if there are any moms out there with sailors who graduated 12.21.12 who are starting At GL for pre dive prep...and are working to keep their Eod contracts? my sailor tells me that it is a tough few weeks coming up and a small percentage make it. Just worried and anxious for him at the same time.
  • QMGsmom

My son graduated in january and is a quarter thru eod school. There were 21 eod in his division, and he was 1 of 6 out of the 21 that made it thru dive prep. Dive prep is basically a weeding out time in prep for dive school. its hailed as very hard, but compared to dive and eod school it doesn't compare. Best advice, gotta swim and be comfortable in the water. On agood note, a few guys not familiar with the water did make it thru. As a mom, the advice I can give you is don't be nervous. this process is a good thing. A few that did get dropped, were devasted at first but are very happy now. Its not for everyone. After 9 mos, and my son being rolled a few times, the anxiety fades, because you understand its totally out of your control, and its exhausting. Just be positive and supportive, thats the best you can do for your sailor.
  • Karenlee

Qmgsmom comment was on target. My son graduated in March 2011 and we went through the same thing. Rolled back 2 times and having to re-take tests to be kept from being rolled back make for a stressful time. Stay positive and support them.
  • Dancemom2002

Thanks for the insights everyone. Very encouraging to read thru these posts and understand the long process of EOD training. Looking forward to the climb...I will hope, pray and be strong for all the upcoming EOD sailors who are just entering this first phase...PIR 12.21.12....Div 803. Keep in touch.
  • SpecialK

Hey Dancemom2002.  My son went back to GL on Dec 27.  He said he is looking forward to prep staring next week.  He said most of the guys are getting antsy but are working out hard and are ready.  He said it is a great bunch of guys and they really are determined to make it though this phase of training.

  • proudnavymom03

My son leaves for basic, this next week with and EOD contract. I'm excited and worried. I am beyond proud of his decision to join the Navy, as a mom I might have chosen another job. (lol)

  • proudnavymom03

Donna, Thank you for your words of encouragement. I already miss him, it's hard to imagine the days with him not being near.  I know the time will pass and I will be preparing for his PIR, just not at the point yet where I can wrap my head around all that yet. Has yu son started dive prep yet?  As prepared as my son thinks he is I'm afraid he will have an awakening. He's a tough kid I'm sure after the first several weeks, it gets better for all. Once the PIR list is submitted for the guest do you know if it can be changed by the SR?

  • SpecialK

Proudnavymom03 - Welcome to the family.  I have a son who graduated boot camp on 12/21/12.  He actually started dive prep today.  I know it seems like BC will last forever but for us it went by pretty fast.  Praying that he gets a good group of recrits.  My son's group performed well and ended up getting more phone calls than I had expected so make sure you keep the phone with you at all times!   Also, we had a facebook page set up for PIR 12/21/12 and when phone calls started to come in, the pages lit up with info.  Check to see if you have that available.  But remember since your son is Spec Ops you need to make sure you don't disclose personal information.  And if you can possibly get to graduation, do.  It was a great experience.  So proud of all the men and women who graduated.
