I had mailed a letter with a little gift in it for my son and it has not made it yet.  Has been almost a  month.  Seems like he normally gets them a little faster so i am hoping this one is just delayed.  Ugh .  I best get his birthday box together fast and get it over there .

  • stuntsmom

this may be a dumb question and I'm sorry in advance lol but when you mail a card or letter does it need a custom form???
  • Dad of Sailor

    stuntsmom,

No, only needs a custom form when it contains something of value (normally a package). Not needed on letters, cards and post cards.

  • morgantracy

My husband received his most recent package in 6 days. While the package before that took 2 weeks. It just kinda all depends.

  • Anita n Ohio

And...if it is an oversize card, place an extra stamp or two on it (just like you do for US Mail)...

  • momofmy5

Just received a pkg from my Sailor ... it says DO NOT OPEN until Christmas. Not fair!
  • Anita n Ohio

    Doesn't say "no shaking"....lol

  • momofmy5

Lol. She told me it was coming, as she's ran out of room. I guess we're getting some cool souvenirs for Christmas!
  • Anita n Ohio

Yeah, mine just wrote Sat saying they got my care packages and they are sending something my way.

received the two boxes you sent and I just was amazed at how much toys you put in there. I'm sending you a little something for deployment. The little German Shepherd statue in the box is my storeroom watchdog.  The guys love throwing the glow ball at each others but for some reason I find it entertaining. Thanks for the snacks especially all the vanilla wafers.

    Love (name)

For you Navy Moms who love monogramming, check out this site. The owner will create custom window clings for your car with a Navy theme. All you need to do is ask. If she can make it she will.

    ^5 to pattyb & benangy

I'm waiting for video of the crew doing the Ice Bucket Challenge...that would be interesting!

  • pattyb

AnitaN !  that would be fun to see!!!!!

  • lavendergrl8

I was wondering if they would do something for that! :-0)

  • Anita n Ohio

Someone on FB is asking the Bush page where her daughter's challenge to her dad can be posted (he's on the Bush).

  • Dad of Sailor

God bless James Foley's family and may he rest in peace. I hope the USS George H.W. Bush is carrying out justice on those that committed this horrible act of terrorism.

Prayers for all those aboard GHWB as they carry out their mission.

  • Anita n Ohio

    AMEN, Dad!

  • SailorMom94

Does anyone know of a Airline that might be cheap for our Sailor to take once leave is set. Thanks in advance
  • TLC72

My son usually gets the best rates with Southwest, but has flown Delta also.
  • Caring Mother

Yes, Dad. I pray for his family at this time. Also let us not forget Steven Sotloff.

I'm sure justice will be done.  Likewise for continued prayes to all aboard GHWB.

  • Michelle

We have found the best rates on Southwest too. Sometimes I drive an hour to pick him up because the best rates near us seem to be in and out of Pittsburgh. One great thing about Southwest is that they do not charge fees for changing your flights either.

I also have some friends that fly using Spirit airlines.  They are limited on where they fly, but I always try to check them out because the rates are great!

  • Anita n Ohio

Stay away from CVG (Cincinnati) - they will put the screws to you every time!!  Delta holds a monopoly on CVG.

  • JackieD

My son has found good rates on Southwest or he's booked flights through Norfolk International Airport's website and rates have been decent.  The only thing, he's mixed carriers because of the flight times and if you have to change flights (which he always had to) it can be a pain, but he's done it without extra charges.

  • SailorMom94

Southwest seams the most reasonable. If for some reason you can't make the flight you have a year to use the credit.
  • lavendergrl8

heard from son, Captain announced tiger cruise is definitely cancelled :-(

  • KathyWQ

My son just said the same thing. My husband is totally bummed! But on a positive note he already took those days off so we are going to have a mini vacation in Washington DC before we head to Virginia!! Extremely excited about that?
  • MarianneKT's Mom

Honestly, I don't think any of us are really surprised by this.  It would have been a wonderful time though!

  • lavendergrl8

Do we have any idea if it is late November or early that they would come back?

  • benangy

Good morning to all I have a question please-I am from Mississippi and do like to know of apartments located in the Norfolk area for my son and his wife whenever the GHWB returns. Looking at the news this seems as though they may return later than sooner. thanks for any suggestions

Praying for all our sailors!!!!!! and our Country

  • Laura

A lot of sailors live in the Waterfront apartments in Virginia Beach.  The plus side is that they are affordable and clean. The downside is that they are along the flight path from Oceana.

  • benangy

Thanks Laura 7 for the information will let my Sailor and his wife know. Have a Great Day and much prayer for our Navy!!!!!!!

  • Anita n Ohio

    Remember everyone!

DO NOT POST DATES, TIMES ON HERE FOR RETURNING!

If not, the "Powers that Be" will keep them out longer and you'll have NO IDEA when they will return.

(nothing personal lavendergrl, but that is too much info!)

  • Dad of Sailor

Anita, thanks for the friendly reminder. Good info as always.

  • Angeleyesm

Does anyone have any big surprises for their sailor at homecoming ? I have lost 75 pounds and plan to lose at least another 10 and I know he won't recognize me :)
  • MarianneKT's Mom

Angeleyesm - That is wonderful!  Keep up the great work.

Proud Navy Mom - Congratulations to your son and wife.  Can't imagine that moment and the emotion after waiting all those months to hold his child!

  • momofmy5

How do you guys plan for the return of the ship? Booking flights, hotels etc. Do you go and wait just expecting delays or wait and change those reservations as needed?
  • Dad of Sailor

    momofmy5,

The military makes planning tough. Things can change at the last minute and a lot of times you have to wait until the last minute to get details of what the times/dates actually are. Don't blame your Sailor, it is caused by those much higher in the food chain.

Getting tickets that can be changed or travel insurance is the best bet. Just make sure the insurance will cover the change since you're not actually the one in the military.

  • lavendergrl8

sorry about that- i thought if it was announced , it wasok.

  • Anita n Ohio

Yadda yadda yadda....I know I know.  (NOT THIS GROUP) but I have been slammed with posts that my sailor can't do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on the Bush.    BUT!  Their butt is mine when they come home next time  he he he he

  • rikki_100113

Ok so this might appeal to more women of the group.....but what are y'all wearing to the home coming? I can not find a single thing I like....... I swear shopping for my wedding dress was easier than this...

  • JackieD

Rikki - I haven't thought of that yet, but I'm assuming it has to be something warm.

  • rikki_100113

Yea I have been thinking about it a lot here lately and have been searching the internet and cant find a single thing I like. I have not even tried to go to the stores yet lol but I was thinking a dress but now I am thinking jean and a cardigan or a nice sweater idk.....ugh

  • fierssej

I found a cute wrap dress with sleeves on Amazon last night that I'm planning on wearing with leggings. It's a bright color, and it'll keep me warm enough to be able to shed whatever jacket I'm wearing once his rank is called to get off.
  • rikki_100113

hmmm I'm going to have to try amazon I didn't even think of that.

  • fierssej

They have a lot of dresses on sale right now. I ordered a book last night and the shipping ended up being more than the price of the book, so I decided to keep shopping. I wasn't even planning on getting a dress at all until I saw that one. It was too perfect not to.
  • KWats Momma

Hi....planning time for the upcoming event :)  Can someone reccommend a hotel to stay at in Norfolk?  Maybe one that would be good for a first time alone late teens traveler.

  • SailorMom94

Our Sailor sent home gifts he bought in Turkey. Not sure who packed it but I have a beautiful plate with a few chips and a broken tea cup . I think he is going to be very bummed, I hate to tell him.
