Do you know what program she was talking about? I don't know what she would be looking at in Cape May, New Jersey.

She needs to get signed up immediately for the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Class that is offered on base in Norfolk. That needs to be her immediate priority over any work she is assigned or what else they have her doing. It is a week long class and covers all the topics she'll need to transition out of the military.

  • SailorMom94

Anita,I wish her all the best in her journey. It's very sad to hear the Sailor's that want out and about yours that wants nothing but to stay in. Good luck to you both and please keep us posted.

Anita in Ohio- Hello. My sailor was deployed on the Bush, last year, and she is no longer serving, after 5 long years (for me, due to missing her, AND being on edge, with each deployment). She is now attending college. F.y.I., some of her training via the Navy earned her, or transferred over to college credits, which I was very pleased about.

In regards to your daughter potentially attending college, using her G.I. Bill, I believe she will not get her "payment" t owards her tuition EXACTLY on time to meet the colleges scheduling for it to be due, but, as colleges deal with G.I. bills, I believe a college would work around any small discrepancy in your daughter, or her college, receiving the tuition funding a bit off from their own deadlines-- as my daughter's college did.

The housing funding is not received by the vet until they begin their first day of college, I believe, or somewhere near when college starts. It could be somewhere near $25,000/year, for say, a Petty Officer, 2nd Class.

Then there's the lump sum upon getting out of the service, that my daughter received, which she paid off her student loan from her first year in college, from just before she entered the Navy. The rest, only her Dad is in control of, as an "oops fund" (my ex has been pretty good with financial planning with both our daughters). Just to give you some ideas.

Anita- As for how life goes, I'm sorry your daughter's present dreams are dashed, and her present status sucks.

However, my own daughter HAD to join the Navy, as a resort due to losing her scholarship for college, because of her D+ average. She cried, when her Dad suggested the Navy, as a "safer" way to earn a college education (than other branches), yet she knew he was right, so join she did, AND re-up, as well.

She earned numerous medals, had some "Wow"(!) moments, soared in her classes, was promoted and loved it, had her arm twisted, to re-up, again... but her destiny, she decided, was to get back to civilian life and finish getting her degree.

This flip-flop has turned out very well. She's on her way t owards bringing her GPA up high enough to get into her desired U. of Miami, to finish her degree, or degrees... maybe even a PhD., she says, this week.

So you never know what doors may be opened for YOUR daughter, as mine might never have gotten straight A's, without the discipline of having served in the Navy.

Some family members encouraged her to stay in. I wanted her to enjoy a more "normal" life, for instance, falling in love, getting married, without the separations that deployments bring (therefore, having a better chance of STAYING married, I felt). Also, I've been a disabled Mom, in need of my kids, yet the Navy, 5 years, and earning a master's, for 3 years, has separated my 2 kids from me. Honestly, it was so hard, always staying strong, while missing my sailor daughter-- being unable to vacation when they want, while serving, and their base being SO far from home (I feel for all the Mom's on this page).

So, as crazy as change can be, sometimes, it can open NEW and EXCITING doors, tell your daughter.

Now you and your daughter can talk about whatever you want, without the constraints as those during deployments.

(Cont.-- as there has been another "hiccup" in my daughter's life, that STILL needs "massaging"-- cuz life always has it's ups and downs. There is always a need for us to help our kids with navigating... we can help them to keep "steady as she goes", or at least alsays be by their sides, through their trials and tribulations). Keep the faith....

Anita in Ohio- I'll try to be brief, this time. We'll see....

But my daughter's topsy turvy life lead her from not being able to remain in college, then begrudgingly joining the Navy, loving it, progressing, sustaining 3 injuries, then returning to civilian life. Recently, she blew the engine in the SUV her Dad gave her, to finish college in-- the only thing he had to offer her, as assistance. Oh, well! We're presently working through some sticky and complicated "rearranging of family vehicles "-- long story.

My hell-raising wildcat, in her first year of college, seems to have focused on going in so many directions, she seemed to have focused on everything but adding oil to her vehicle with 200,000 miles on it... an accident wai ting to happen, that vehicle.

I know they warn of A.R.I.'s (alcohol related incidences ), after deployments. I kind of think adjusting to so very many changes in such a young person's life... We'll, it could throw anyone off kilter, trying to get back into a rhythm, once becoming a civilian, OR after a deployment. I think my daughter was spinning her wheels so fast, maybe, trying to catch up on lost time, after 5 whole years. Even with multiple reminders to check her oil, still, she forgot to do this simple, regular task. So, for what it's worth, I think, as they say, "Have someone else do the driving, when first back from deployment"-- maybe our kids need to be reminded to really focus on handling alm kinds of things in a well-rounded manner, when readjusting to civilian life.

Lots of ups, and certainly some downs, here, with MY sailor. I wish you and your daughter some lovely fair winds and following seas, Anita, in your futures. She's lucky she's got a great Mom by her side! AND she's a more disciplined, motivated and more mature women, after her years of serving. I'm sure things will turn out okay. Still, watch her back, I'd like to say. ;)

Good luck to her, with all the time-consuming logistics, paperwork, etc. If she attends college, I hope the scheduling, the start date, with her housing income, any job stuff all runs copascetically for her.

I, myself, keep checking Navy Mom email post notifications, on and off, regarding comments, here.

Maybe we'll stay in touch. I would like to catch an update, now and again, by staying "nosey" on this site.

All the best... to all the Mom's and their kids. ♡ It's been a pleasure to be able to engage with others in the same boat. :))

Hello families from San Diego ca
  • TLC72

Does anyone know the dates of Christmas leave?
  • MarianneKT's Mom

Tracy,  I would love to help you, but my daughter's last day on the Bush was the 6th of November.

  • Laura

Tracy - Not all of the sailors take leave at the same time.  It is up to your sailor's individual command as to who goes when.

  • Rose

Looking for Christmas gift suggestions, keeping in mind the limited space while living on a carrier. Any things that your LOs are glad to have?

  • Anita n Ohio

  • Mommamac MM(CVN77)

Our son has been on the Bush since Jan, and have been a member of NFM's since 2012. Look forward to sharing info with other moms.
  • Dad of Sailor

    Hello everyone,

Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Years.

Sorry I have not been around much, work has me swamped and very little time for the internet.

My son has had a great year on the Bush since returning from deployment. He made E-5, got his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, accomplished some impressive things in his shop, etc. He's now deciding whether to stay in the Navy and go to shore duty or to get out of the Navy and go to college.

Either way, he will be departing the Bush in about six months and I'd like to get another admin for the group lined up. If you're interested in being an admin of this group please shoot me a message. It would be best if we had an admin that was around here a lot and could assist those with questions and keep the group active.

I'll try and find my way in more often as I miss all the great support from the ladies in this group.

I hope you and your Sailors are doing well and have a great 2016.

  • Donna

Good Morning Have not been on for a long time! Does anyone know what month the Busch will be going out on deployment?

  • Anita n Ohio

Busch?     When did Anheuser-Busch buy #77?    Talk about your PARTY BOATS!!  jk

  • SoCal_Sailor_Dad

Dreamer, Donna, My sailor says he still doesn't know when they're supposed to be done (He got there in Nov.) Anyway, I'm sure Dreamer is correct about those dates being OPSEC.

Also, don't the carriers typically go out on a couple short cruises before leaving on a deployment?

  • SailorMom94

Hi Anita, glad to see you haven't left us. How is everything going with your daughter, think of her often.

Dad of Sailor, glad to hear your son is doing well and is still looking at his options. Mine is also looking at his option and plans on testing in spring, I would love if he was to take shore duty close to home.

  • Dad of Sailor

    Hello Ladies,

I hope you and your Sailors are doing well and enjoying the summer so far. It is HOT here in Phoenix, supposed to be 120 tomorrow. :(

My son is leaving the Bush in two weeks and has decided to get out of the Navy. He had a great four years and accomplished a ton. He's already got a job lined up in Norfolk and will be working with a contractor that works on the ships doing just what he was doing while in the Navy. He's excited about that.

Anyway, I want to get a new admin lined up since my son won't be on the Bush for the upcoming deployment. If you're interested please let me know so we can get it arranged.

I'll still be around and please feel free to reach out if you have any Navy questions.

I hope everyone's sailor's are doing well in whatever they've been up to the last several months. As bad as I hate to, it will soon be time to start thinking about deployment again. Just wanted to let everyone know I have designed some RED Friday shirts, in case anyone is interested in ordering. The cost is $15 and that is my cost, I'm not trying to make any money off of them, just wanted anyone who wants one to have a chance to order. They were a big hit last time with our family and friends, so thought why not open it up to anyone else. I will try to attach pictures of the front and back.

  • TLC72

I think I have responded to the emails I've received. If anyone has emailed me about the shirts and I didn't get back to you, please let me know. Since I only know people by their user names on here, I don't know for sure who I'm responding to. I'm so glad there is so much interest. My email address is ignitespiritbows@yahoo.com
  • TLC72

Just want to let everyone know to feel free to pass the word along about the Red Friday shirts. I know last time, my son had several people comment on the pictures we sent him. They liked all the support. If anyone emails me, please let me know your user name that you use on N4M, so I know who I am responding to.

  • TLC72

Several have shown interest in the RED Friday shirts that I am ordering. I will be placing the order at the end of the month, so would like to get all the orders compiled this weekend. If anyone still plans to order, please let me know ASAP so that I don't miss anyone. My email address is ignitespiritbows@yahoo.com or can contact me through my business FB page Ignite Spirit Bows

  • TLC72

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the last day to order the RED Friday shirts. I will be finalizing my order first thing Thursday morning, so can take no more orders at that time. If anyone is still interested, contact me at ignitespiritbows@yahoo.com. If anyone has ordered or asked for information, and didn't hear back from me, please get ahold of me to make sure your order was received.

  • JackieD

I haven't posted on here either for quite some time.  But I will definitely be coming here often when they deploy again.  Loved talking to all of you during the last deployment.

  • debb9397

I haven't logged in for sometime as I have been lucky enough to see my sailor fairly often this year.  I will be logging in very often when they deploy.  This is his first deployment and he is newly married so it will be difficult on all of us.  I will certainly need the support of the group and any information shared.

  • mommaross CVN77

Please don't delete me - please! - important time coming up for us soon. I'll miss my son this Christmas. But hoping to fly out to meet him at one of his stops this deployment :). That will be exciting if we can get it all coordinated - and the Navy doesn't change plans at the last minute lol! But it will be an adventure for us whatever happens so I'm looking forward to it. Even if I don't comment I read everyone's messages - keeps us feeling connected.

  • VICTOR'SMOM

Hello families our kids well some of them will miss Christmas I know my will any ideas on what to send them remember we are sisters we are all family. Thank you
  • mrjmom

Hello all. I don't post very much, but I do follow what everyone else does. I will say this group was my lifeline last deployment!!
  • slipstream

I will be checking this frequently once they are deployed.  I am very grateful for this site and all the support.

  • Rose

To Victor's Mom: anticipating upcoming workups from the ship, last Christmas time I gave my DS a pure beech jersey knit twin extra ;ong sheet set & pillow/mattress protectors (from BB&B). He has had several chances to make use of them (along with the memory foam mattress top that he bought). Just recently he asked where I got the sheets so he could get an additional set of sheets. "So comfy!," he said. Made this Mom's heart happy to think that at the end of a mission, her DS could be cozily tucked in for a good night's rest before the next venture out. :-)

  • Rose

Definitely counting on this group for advice & support to carry this Mom thru a 1st deployment. :-)

  • Rose

Oops! Intended to type: twin "extra long" sheets!

  • Dad of Sailor

Hi ladies! It seems like a long time since we were all here supporting each other during the last deployment. I know you're all getting anxious as the next deployment nears.

My son is no longer on the Bush, or in the Navy for that matter. I'd like to find an involved and positive mom to act as an admin of this group during the upcoming deployment. If you're interested please message me so I can see about getting someone setup.

Hope you all are doing well and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any Navy questions.

  • Dad of Sailor

I said "mom" but you don't need to be a mom...a wife would work also. :) Let me know if you're interested.

  • SailorMom94

Wow what a continued amazing family we have on the Bush. My Sailor is currently with all your Sailor's on this last step before deployment. My Sailor is looking at coming home when his 4 yr term is over as his Father past this past July, it is never easy losing a parent and especially not being there as it was sudden. We have always supported our Sailor and prayed his journey would always be positive as it has been. With our sailors term being completed in March I'm not sure if deployment is where our Sailor will go, but if it is I'm here to continue to support not only our Sailor but also yours.
  • diane

Hi ladies, my son was able to come home for 16 days in early November. I enjoyed his visit home even though I was very sick for half of it. I feel bad because I couldn't cook many of his favorites because I was so sick. I sure hope he had a nice visit home.
  • MeLinda

I am still here, usually don't have time to reply but do read all the posts.

  • my3sons73

Im a mom of a sailor on the Bush I'm just curious if anyone else follows a FB page called American Military News? I don't understand why OPSEC is even mentioned on this website when clearly what when and whereabouts of Bush is plastered all over Facebook. I have to say honestly it pissed me off. The article names specificly how long and whereabouts the Bush will be and when it's going to deploy right there on Facebook. I just thought the Navy wouldn't want that advertised but I guessed wrong. Anyway I guess now I know it's an 8mth deployment not 6 like my son originally told me a while back.

  • Dad of Sailor

    Hi my3sons73,

    Welcome to the group!

While I understand your frustration, I can say that article does not mention specifics. It does list some general comments like "about the time" and "close to eight months" but there are no specifics other than where they will be going. It is a Norfolk based carrier so everyone knows where those carriers deploy, that's no secret.

We can't control what other sites or people do but we can do out part here to keep your loved ones safe as they can be under the circumstances.
