Hello, my sailor had PIR last week on Nov. 25, she is in Great Lakes for two weeks then flys out to Fort Lee, VA for A School. Does anyone know if holiday break applies to her?

  • Anti M

Ft. Lee is an Army base.  I'm pretty sure they have a stand down also, but call it exodus.  Since she is transferring about the time the stand down begins Dec 18. they may just put her on leave, and have her report to Ft. Lee in Jan.  I am just guessing though, she has a unique situation.  But she's in training, so her chances are very good.  Just don't know who will authorize it.

  • VirgoMom904

Anti M- Thank you for your quick reply, she is currently on hold in Great Lakes and no one seems to know anything about them getting a Christmas break. Hopefully they will know soon.

  • Anti M

Being on hold is frustrating and confusing.  I am confident she'll get to take leave, but I know planning is easier with solid information.  And cheaper.  She does know to utilize the base travel office (MWR ticketing) for best fares. yes?
I hope you both get happy answers soon!!!

  • VirgoMom904

Anti M - Great News!! She' s coming home home for Christmas!! so happy and cant wait :)

  • Anti M

Yay!  So great when you get a positive answer!!!!

  • Llmom

Looking for someone with a sailor in Goose Creek ... Son has been out of contact with everyone since Saturday afternoon.?. Hasn't answered calls, texts, trying emails ....
Ready to call the school in the morning but don't want to get him in trouble? Anyone one have any suggestions?
  • Anti M

Sounds like he lost his phone.

  • NavyMum

He's an adult. He's not required to check in with mum daily or weekly or even at all (although we all hope our sailors check in occasionally). If you are listed as next of kin, the Navy will notify you if something's gone amiss. So no news is good news :)

It'll be okay mum - he may have lost his phone, he may be busy, he may just be stretching his wings and asserting his independence from his parents...

  • NavyMum

and don't call the school unless the reason you're trying to reach him is a genuine emergency (and in that case, I would go through the Red Cross).

  • Pooh'sMom

    Llmom,
I hope you've heard from your son by now, and that all is well.

    NavyMum,
I may be the only person, but your message came off as curt to Llmom. This is a support group for us to lean on each other, share our fears, and concerns. Yes, her son is an adult. Yes, he may have lost his phone. No, he is not required to have daily contact. All of these are stating the obvious, and I'm sure had already passed through Llmom's mind. However, it is her motherly right to be concerned. We are all adjusting to our new normal, while supporting our cherished young adults. We have read horror stories about Sailors going missing due to stressful times, and our motherly minds can often run wild even if it's not justified. It's why we join groups like this for SUPPORTIVE comments. Just my observation.

  • NothingButProud

Please let's all support each other. Every mom has different experiences and different emotions. Llmom I hope you've heard from your son and can rest easy knowing he's ok.
  • Pooh'sMom

    NothingButProud,
I couldn't agree more!  We need to be supportive.

    hooyahsuzy,
Stating the obvious, followed by a cough of reassurance is not supportive.

This may not be the group that I expected it to be.

  • Anti M

It can be impossible to read tone online, so always give the benefit of the doubt please. Support comes in many flavors, and sometimes without the tissues and sugar.

I also post concisely and directly, some people take my posts as rude when I had no  intention of being so.  I was a sailor, I will give you the straight skinny and not blow smoke up your skirt.  That is why I try not to read anything into the words of a post, the intention here IS support, although it can be a little salty for some.

Navymum was quite correct, calling his school because he didn't contact you for less than 24 hours is just going to get him noticed in a bad way.  You can let him know you worry, to at least try to get a quick message through on someone else's phone.  There are many possibilities, so you have to trust him, and trust that because you have heard nothing, that everything is okay.  This trust is what will get you through deployments when they go "River City" and communications are cut off without warning, and without any way to know how long or why.  It is a hard thing, and something everyone who loves a sailor endures.  I am being honest here, you have to find it in yourself to trust him and the Navy if you  are going to survive his enlistment in one sane piece.

I used to go weeks without hearing from my husband; I was a sailor myself at the time.  We made it through.  If I can do it, you can do it!  Hang in there.

  • NavyMum

I apologise if my response came across as rude or unsupportive. It wasn't intended to be.

Llmom - I hope you've heard from him

Hello everyone!   Haven't really been active in this group but my son is now in A School.  He is in Groton CT, he is sonar (STS) Sonar Tech Sub.  He started about 3 weeks ago and so far so good!   It has definitely been a different journey since he left for boot camp last year!!  He is happy and I'm hoping he will get his first choice of bases, which of course is Hawaii!!!   Hope all are having a great week.  Always praying for the safety of all of our boys in the Navy!!!

  • John and Yvonne

Hawaii is great! My husband was the Chaplain for several of the Subs when we were stationed there. Hawaii is one of our favorite places!

My son is finishing A school the end of August. Want to attend graduation! Anyone know the process to do so?
  • NavyMum

Ksailingmom - it's probably different at different A schools but my son was supposed to graduate A-school on March 10th but they held an impromptu graduation in the classroom on March 9th  - they were all in their NWUs and the school did post photos on FB but it wasn't really much of a ceremony to be honest. We weren't able to attend - which turned out to be a good thing since we would have missed it anyway. And then he was on hold at the A-school location for a couple more weeks anyway.

  • Christiane

My son graduated Boot Camp on Friday and just starting A School, he is learning Electricity Tech for work on Turbine Engines, anyone else have a son or daughter doing this?  We came home yesterday and he called in the afternoon to tell us he had been to the gym as he still had liberty and was doing well.  It was such a great weekend for us!!!! We had a great cab driver named Sarge who knows everything about everything, just ask if anyone needs his number, we tried to stay close to all the happenings by staying in the days inn which wasn't as close as it says it is and was an awful place to stay.  If your visiting your son or daughter and can do it, spend a little extra and stay in a better place.  It wasn't a savings considering it was so run down and awful....couldn't even get a bottle of water, machine broken....

  • LLN15

Anyone have a loved one in NCBC - Gulfport, MS?

  • John and Yvonne

    Ladies and moms,

When your son or daughter graduates from A school and if they get stationed in Norfolk/Virginia Beach please let them know about us. My husband and I open our home on the weekends and invite sailors over to have a place to hang out(a home away from home). On Saturday nights we eat together and play board games. On warmer evenings we go mini golfing and other outdoor activities. On Sunday we sit down to a home cooked meal with home made bread and desserts. You can check us out on our page on this site to find out more.

Hello - My daughter graduated on 3/10/17 & she'll be attending A school in Virginia (CS). I'm looking to see if anyone also has a Sailor heading that way & if anyone knows when that graduation will be? Thx.

  • Moom

Hello all My son just started A school in Texas. I am so proud of him but feel so far away. Just found out I wont be able to go to graduation. He has told me multiple times that it is ok because he will be home for a few days after. But still hurts.

  • mommabear

Don't feel bad. A school graduation is 15 minutes nd a handshake. My son told me not to bother since he will be coming home also...
  • Moom

I am trying...its a long story but I've missed so many little things....so  I hate missing this. But being low man on the todem pole with a new job makes me last in line for time off.

  • John and Yvonne

Just a quick reminder to you moms.

If your sons or daughters come to Virginia Beach for A school we would love to invite them over to our home on the weekends, We provide rides if they don't have a vehicle . :

Does anyone know the rules for Christmas? I want to know if my husband can come home and see his family for Christmas but does the 350 mile radius still apply?
  • MegsMom

My daughter arrived at A School last Sunday in San Antonio Texas. So far so good. She enjoys having her phone and it makes it so much easier to chat with her. I'm curious about the Graduation. Should I try to make a point to be there?

  • Phoenixmom

Hi Ladies, new to this site, My son is attending A School in Great Lakes, Il he will be a EM. He is Loving it! Ashley I think it depends on where your Husband is stationed. My son is in Great Lakes and he down time is starting Dec. 22nd cant leave earlier that 9am until Jan. 7th that is when he needs to be back. and from my understanding it also depends on how much time he has accumulated. I hear some may have to stay back due to Duty. but your Husband should of had a briefing on it already or maybe soon.

  • CountryMomOfASailor#47

Hi everyone. I have a question/comment. My daughter just arrived at her A school in Goose Creek, SC on Sat. She has yet to get a roommate and is trying to clean the dorm which she said was a mess when she got there. She needs so many things and we told her not to spend all her $$ that we would ship some things but she doesnt have an address yet and is still in INDOC. How soon til we can get an address? Thanks in advance:) Wishing she wasnt a 10 hr drive away:(

  • Shaana

My son just arrived A school in Dam Neck. What kind of liberty might he have around Christmas which will be during his 4th week there?

  • John and Yvonne

    Shaana,

We're not sure what liberty schedule your son will have at Christmas....my husband and I, when we first moved here 18 years ago and invited sailors over to our home, they were able to come over on the weekends and for Christmas. If that is still the case, we would be happy to invite him to come over, especially on Christmas day. We have several sailors who will also be coming. We can pm you our cell # or with your son's permission, we could contact him.

My son arrived at A school in Pensacola on Monday - anyone else have a Sailor attending A school there?

  • Catherine

Barring Covid delays, my son will head to RTC in July and then to Groton, CT for sub & A- schools. Any tips or info onThat area and/or that base  I know sailors will be very busy the first month there with sub school and then several weeks of A-school.  When can they leave base for liberty?  Are there things to do in the area and How best for sailors  without a vehicle get around? Uber? Any groups or events on base for new guys to meet others?

  • Catherine

Hmmmm, crickets for A school in Groton, CT   :-(

  • Valtameri

    Hi Catherine,

I see you are also a member of sub moms and groton -- those are kind of quiet too, but may have info in the discussion forum.

Bases all have some sort of recreation and transportation options available. Here's Groton's MWR info page:

Hello! I am new to this whole navy thing. I am on the bootcamp group and they are tremendously supportive. Definitely made it easier to have people to talk to about what you are experiencing as SR move through quarantine and into bootcamp.  I am 18 days into this journey and my son will be headed to A school in groton for secf and basic sub school. Just thought I would check this page out too.

Catherine- I looked around the groton page too. Very quiet over there. It will be 8-9 more weeks before my SR gets there. But we to are hoping to visit him there.
