CO-TwinSailorsMom.. Thanks for the opportunity to ask questions. My son is still in IT A School and will follow up with C school in Pensacola, as well. Just a couple questions... Is there any typical time gap between A and C? Did anyone in your son's group get to choose their first stop after school? Is there any area that the majority get sent to after school? He's enjoying school so far and tests for 2nd certification this week. A graduation scheduled for last week of June, so lots of time and learning to go. Did your son talk about any specific area or certification that was much harder than the rest? Did you go to graduation or is it not that big of an event? Guess that's it for now. Thanks again...
Sounds like you son and mine are on same time frame. He graduated A school June last year and came home on leave followed be leaving a week early to return to Norfolk and his ship that was deploying. He did not go to C school, it is my impression the wait there is not long. My sons recruiter told him to not do c school as he would learn what they learn there on the job anyway.
Graduation is not well attended but he did get photos. Mine got to fill out the dream sheet as he finished third in his class. The top three get to do this sometimes. He got his second choice.
He has been home from deployment since January back to Norfolk Feb. he has been in classes. So the training is continual throughout. He took classes on board during deployment also.
hi, i am new here. my son arrived at corry station on the 5th of april. he finally classed up on the 15th. i have yet to find other IT mom's who know answers to my questions. to find other mom's who may have a sailor in the same class.
he has only been on duty once and does NOT have liberty. how can he do this so i can visit him soon? do we know a graduation date?
he gets really poor reception in his room so it makes it really hard to communicate.
any advise, help or answers would be much appreciated.
He should phase up in a couple of weeks. then he can wear civie and go off base some. Does that help? As for Graduation I think your sailor will tell you.
I don't believe there is a FB for IT, however when my son was at Corry station this site was just not very active so I joined the Pensacola and Corry too group. It is mainly aviation but there were moms from the IT side also. I meet some of my very favorite moms on that group. It was very active and fun.
Hi - new here. My son just arrived at Corry Station on Sat night. My husband, younger son, and I went to graduation last Friday, and it was wonderful to see our sailor. What a proud and happy day! But now, at A school, he is homesick. Did any of y'all have the same issue with your sailor? He is not rooming with anyone from his graduating group so it's like starting all over again making friends. Since he can have his cell phone now, he is able to text at night to keep in touch, and I am doing my best to stay positive and encourage him. I think after classes start he will feel better. Any advice on getting your sailor through his homesickness?
Hi MartyC,
I'm a Navy mom whose son is leaving for Bc in September, but I'm also at corry station, myself. I probably saw him on Saturday. It is a real close knit group here, and he will find "family" here pretty quickly. But even I have a hard time convincing these kids how good they have it here if they have a girlfriend back home.
This place is not very nice, but it grows on you, and the command here is made up of quality leadership so the instructors are all pretty happy to be here. I really think we are in a good place. Just encourage him that it gets better. Especially once he is classed up.
Thanks so much for your encouragement. Yes, he knows it will get better, but right now is pretty homesick and a little down. He doesn't have a girlfriend back here at home (Houston), so at least that is not adding to his homesickness. He did mention that the place is a little run down. I know that once he is classed up he will be fine. I'm sure he knows about the IT lounge and the smoke pit, but I'll mention it to him. Thank you again. So, your son leaves for boot camp in September, but you are at Corry Station?
Pensacola is a fun town, once he's able to explore it. This base looks a little post-apocalyptic with the old compounds surrounded by barbed wire. I'm here in IT A-school myself. My son is going to be a nuke. He's so excited, and I'm less worried since I just went through bootcamp myself. I know he will have at least as much fun as I did, probably more. I would be happy to give your son a little pep talk, if that would help. They sometimes don't know how easy this is compared with real world civilian life. The grass is greener to the kid who just wants to be free, but I'm old enough to know this is the easiest thing I've had to do, thus far in the game.
Wow - you are in A school and your son is going to boot camp! That is AWESOME! Congratulations to you and your son, and thank you for your service. You know, if you happen to see him (Campbell) and have a few encouraging words for him, that would be great. I don't know what barracks he's in (if that is the correct term for his living arrangements). Yes, I understand exactly what you mean about how the younger ones don't realize how it is in real civilian life, because they haven't really been out there yet. When we saw him off at the airport on Saturday, I felt envious of him and the others who had just graduated because they are beginning, and they have so many opportunities ahead. So, yes - if you happen to run into Sailor Campbell, please let him know that it gets better, and share some of your knowledge with him :) THANK YOU!
MartyC -my son is also at Corry starting IT - (his classes started today. ) Going to Corry and being in IT was not even on his radar when he signed up with the Navy but ....'stuff happens' and he is trying to make the best of it.
That said, he has been in P'cola a few weeks. He has had no roommate since he arrived and because it isn't a 'hall' like a dorm he really doesn't interact that much with other people and so far isn't too impressed :( He is 21 years old with 2 years of college experience so he's lived on his own before. He does have a girl at home and was granted a couple of days of leave so she flew across the country to visit him. I really worried that it would make him miss home/her even more when she left as he has only seen his dad (who went to PIR in May) since he left for BC in March. I talked to him yesterday and he seemed ok.
Right now he is injured but in his heart he is a gym rat - i'm sure he will find his 'friends' once he can go to the gym regularly and start running again..although he doesn't share my optimism. The 'starting over' will be a constant theme though as they move from school to base to ?????
Sea*mom, is your son on alpha or bravo shift? I had a new class marching with us and across the hall tonight. Your son is likely going to move out of the IT barracks very soon into one of the quad like rooms that none of us knew about until after we classed up. Very college-like. Everything looks a little hopeless when you first get here, but once you get into your routine with school, it's better. Your instructor becomes your navy parent, and you have some sense of direction and stability. That instructor has a small class that they are keeping close tabs on so hopefully no one falls through the cracks. Some people still do, but they were guaranteed given plenty of personal attention here as long as they are smart enough to ask questions.
Also, I know what you are saying about your son finding friends here. I remember looking around the galley one day and noticing that I felt like I was at a dungeons and dragons convention. No sooner did I think that then a guy came right up to me and asked me if I wanted to join him and his friends Sunday for their weekly d & d game. I nearly fell over and sweetly thanked him and was glad I was actually volunteering at the chapel on Sunday so I didn't have to make up an excuse ;)
Since then, I was shifted into bravo shift (late night class) and it is so fun after class for those that work out. We have people running and exercising at 1:30-2:30 in the am. There is a 1:30 insanity class. We just love the night life, and some of us still do the gym in the morning.
my son is on bravo shift...don't know how he got so lucky as he is a total nightowl and always has been.
he mentioned that he might be moving again...sigh...but i see it as a good thing - just to have other people around, so you aren't so isolated. (too easy to shut everyone off/out when you go home to an empty room every night)
my son is not shy and has been a 'team player' his entire life so i'm sure he'll find a new 'team'...i'm just hoping it's sooner rather than later. :)
Bravo shift is the best! And really, just being classed up makes a huge difference with meeting people. Everyone is so friendly here and we have tons of breaks during the school day where we congregate outside and talk. He is going to very soon forget about how bored he was.
Miss Conception - thank you so much for looking out for him! I gave him a heads up via text last night about you, and that if you were able to find him, that you may strike up a conversation with him. I will tell him to look for the "old lady" or the "mamma"! :) He texted last night that yesterday was an "ok" day and that he was feeling a little better. I know once classes start and he gets into a routine that it will get better for him. I just want him to be happy.
Sea*mom - thanks for your comments! Sounds like your son is getting into the swing of things, especially now that classes have started for him. I am sure once classes begin for my son, things will look a lot brighter. I am not exactly sure what he is doing now with his days. I think he might be a little bored, with too much time to think about missing home.
My son is IT Bravo Class as well . Been in P'cola since June 1st. I wish I could say that the homesickness subsides but some times I think it gets worse. My son is fine all week when busy with school. But come time for the weekend and he is lost. He had no problem making buddies in BC but he says that most of the guys he is with now are either loners or clicks. My son is a very funny guy, everything is funny to him! Its so hard to see him this way. I went down for the long July 4th weekend (we live in NY City) he was fine when we left. But, His room mate just received his orders so he is leaving today. His other buddy over in NAS rec'd orders a few weeks back. Hope he gets a good room mate fast. He's a people person so I think he'd go stir crazy if he was alone. But you are all so right...this is just a microcosm of regular life and we just have to trust that these strong folks will get through it
New to group. My son arrived last night, Aug 2. He classes up Aug 11. Sounds like he won't have to wait around as long as others have. He gets bored easily so that's good. His buddies from BC that are in Pensacola are at NAS. Do they ever see each other?
A+ is the first part. It is a 2 part certification. 801 and 802. Most people have the biggest challenge with this phase.
2nd part is CCNA (Routers and making them talk) 1 and MCP (welcome to Windows) (Cisco Certified Network Administrator and Microsoft Certified Professional i'm pretty sure)
3rd part is ILE (Interactive Learning Environment) It is all the radio parts that are military trained for ship and shore comms.
My son tells me phase 1 is 6 weeks but he wasn't sure about phase 2 or 3. do you know if they get a day or two off in between phases?; or do they do a final test one day and are the next phase the next day?
Not sure if our son will be headed to Corry Station, he thought he was going to Pennsacola and should have arrived yesterday. He will be IT ATF (Advanced Tech Field we think) just wondering if any other folks out there know much about this route.
Hi everyone...my son is at Corry since the end of July. He started A school toward the end of August. IT seems to be a pretty tough curriculum, as he has done well so far till his finals which he passed but lower scores than the rest of his classes. Im still a little confused as to the status of him being reserve and those who continue onto C school. This is a learning experience for me as I have zero family in the military. Our Sailor will be leaving Corry Station this Thurday and heading to Norfolk VA, IT on the USS George Washington. I have enjoyed this group and it has been very helpful for us. I am now looking for a Group for IT Navy Moms at Norfolk or on the George Washington, any info out there would be appreciated. Fair wind and following seas!
OK, I think this is the right group. My son is in IT school in Corry Station and has been there since late August. Just got off the phone with him. Said he was on the bus and on his way to watch the Eagles/Cowboys football game somewhere! He still can't understand why the Eagles cut Tebow! But he did well in his final exam on Friday so his priorities are right. Still want him to find a good church for Sunday mornings but all I can do is encourage him. Isn't bravo shift 3 pm to 12:30 am? My son's school hours are that time. My husband worked 3rd shift when the boys were little so he told him to stay up as long as he can when he gets out of school and eventually his internal clock will change so his body can adjust to those hours.
My son is an IT and went to A school at Corry station. He volunteered with the Chaplain and asked to have watch at the chapel. I will pry for your son to discover the chapel. He really bonded with the chaplain and loved going off base to do projects. He got to attend 4 different Easter services.
I guess what I am telling you is there is a great church right there.
I have never understood why the Broncos cut Tebow.
Hi there! My son just graduated on 10/02/2015 from GL BC and will doing I.T. A School in Pensacola.. Can anyone give me an idea on what to expect? Especially for the upcoming holidays?
My daughters been there since September 13. you can talk to them every day if you want as long as their not in class, duty, walking or eating. My daughter had a little harder time adjusting here as prepped so much for boot camp & then it changes but they get into the swing. Classes are day or night. She's got 3pm to 12:30 am. He'll want you to send some civilian cloths & personal items.
As I understand they should be able to come home for Christmas or New Years but how long depends on time they've earned as well as how much they want to use, as may want to save more for longer visit before they move on to where they get stationed
Thank you for the info Dolo!!! What kind of I.T. is your daughter doing? Right now my son told me he's on "hold." Something about waiting for more people to start a class. I'm thinking it's because the holidays are up and coming! So they won't get Thanksgiving? I guess we will be going there!! :) We aren't that far at least! :)
Good morning from Chicago! My son will be heading to Corry Station after BC. He begins BC on Nov 18. Any information any of you experienced IT Moms can provide ot me would be very much appreciated! I see all of these initials and am at a loss as to what most of them mean.
My son just arrived in Florida on Saturday. Looking ahead, we would like to plan a visit while he's in A School since it's a 6 month stretch. Any input is appreciated. Anyone know if we can stay in Navy Lodge?
@ Jen. You can stay at Navy Lodge Pensacola, although, sometimes it seems difficult to find vacancy there. Therefore, plan early or there's also Navy Gateway which always had rooms the times that I visited. Both facilities are on the prominent base, NAS, only a short drive from Corry. You can see the lighthouse and aviation museum that are on the grounds there as well. It's a charming area.
Another good option is the courtyard Marriott in Pensacola 15 minutes from Corry Station halfway between there and the beaches Also walking distance to Maguires which is very good and interesting place to go and across the parking lot from the broken egg another good place to have breakfast if you don't want to eat in the hotel lobby. I was just there three weeks ago
@Robbin: My son got there Saturday night. He mentioned reporting for training on the 24th but that's a Sunday, so I"m not sure if I understood him correctly. I assume this week, they are just getting settled and figuring out what's where. Some of the Sailors went bowling Sunday. Was one of them you son?
@Bingaling...no he didn't go bowling. He hung out with some of the guys he flew with and then kinda wandered around the base. He told my husband today that he had a class that spelled out the dos and donts of the base. I hope they get going this coming week.
So can they have their desktop computer? I e many have taken or been sent their laptop. What's the wi-fi or network connection like? Is it worth the cost of sending the desktop & monitor?

can you tell me the three phases of IT training (A school)? i talked to my son yesterday and he said the first phase is:
phase1 ; A+ and is 6 weeks
phase2 ; CCNA - ?
phase3; ILE?
I have no idea if those acronyms are correct and/or what they stand for...or the length of the training.
thanks for any info.

My son just arrived early early Sunday morning. Wondering how long it will take before classes start. I think he is a little bored.
