Thanks!  I was wondering because Im his wife and if we will be able to go to his station duty with him with our child as well? Do they usually find out right away? Or after the 10 days? Also do they usually get deployed first or a duty station?

  • jojosmom

Hi Jyssicarm! My son has his duty stationed in San Diego, has been there since the end of September.  He hasn't received any orders to deploy yet.  He thinks his ship wont deploy until sometime next year. But since you are married he should be able to get housing for you guys at his duty station. He will get more information before he is able to come home.

texasmom79 - I assume your sailor just graduated this past Friday - so congratulations to you and to him!  Can you tell me if he flew out to FL on Saturday or Sunday and what airport?  my son graduates 1/29 and is also going to FL - so trying o figure out when and where he flew from

  • ReneeHum

Michael's mom  your sailor will not find out tell the day before graduation when his flight is. My son flew out of Ohare Saturday morning. It can be anytime that weekend or my son said he may stay a few days before leaving. You just have to wait. Good luck

  • Vickie360

Contrats to to Texasmom79 and Cherie Ship!  Exciting road ahead.  My son graduated last January on the 30th!  There was a big snow storm in Chicago.  His flight went on Saturday afternoon.  We had planned to stay until Sunday because we didn't know when he would fly out.  The storm his late Saturday and our plane was one of the only ones to fly out on Sunday!  Whew!! Our son was in P-cola until mid March... then went to first duty station and deployed in mid May.  Good luck to all of you!

Hi All - my son has PIR 1/29/16 and then is on to Pensacola as APACT.  Does anyone have some detailed or more specific information on what happens with them VS A School?

  • ReneeHum

Cherie, they will get there room, then they will work( be on watch) then they will get there classes. After that they find out which base they go to. My sailor wasn't there as long as they first said. Good luck. things can change every day, so take a deep breath and you just have to wait to see what they tell him after he does Station 21.

  • Cherie Ship 12 Div 082

ReneeHum - thank you so much for responding.  Every bit of information helps.

  • ReneeHum

Cherie they will learn to do thing on there own without someone yelling at them. My son said it was hard not having someone telling or yelling at him.LOL

  • Cherie Ship 12 Div 082

ReneeHum - that's funny!  I had read that a few times on this site so when I spoke to my SR on Saturday I mentioned that going to FL would be different and he will need to adjust to going from being told what to do every second of every day to having to navigate for himself.  hence why I have bought him a battery operated alarm clock and a watch with an alarm!

  • ReneeHum

That is so true, My son loved it there. Now he is in Piont Mugu.CA. he still trying to get use to that base. They are not boys anymore. Good luck

  • Vickie360

Sorry for all my typos last time!!! Apparently I didn't have my glasses on!! My son graduated about the same time last year as yours is this year. They were a little backed up in p-cola because of the holidays so he was in p-cola for several weeks before he started his class. When they first arrive they move into the barracks. After a week or so they can get more privileges (if everyone follows the rules-I think). Eventually they will be able to leave the base with a buddy in regular clothes- that was really nice for my son!! I think my son was there about 6 weeks but he wasn't in school the entire time.... He was waiting to start.
  • texasmom79

  • me2anavymom

We got our letter..... OMG! This is one proud mom! She sounded great! Said she was making friends and has past her tests so far..... She said there food was good, except for the eggs... Lol! She has a recruit job - section leader. She stated it was alot of responsibility.... This makes me so happy, so proud, and so relieved that she is embracing this experience. Thank you all for holding me up, when I could not...
  • Jeanne

My son arrived at BC Tuesday night.  He is AN-PACT.  Can anyone tell me if he will have to fyl right to Pensacola after graduation?  I was hopig to spend a day or two in Chicago with him, but from a few comments Ive read, he will go right to Pensacola.  ??

  • ReneeHum

Hi Jeanne, My son left very early on Saturday morning. We got at airport 5/ 5:30 am had a few hours with him. Good luck

  • Jeanne

Ok thanks Ladies - sounds like he will prob fly out Saturday also.  We live near Pensacola NAS so I guess he will beat us back!

  • Jeanne

Were you able to spend the afternoon with him on Friday after PIR?

  • ReneeHum

Jeanne , I hope so my son had to work so we only had 4 hours with him. Its a great day enjoy take lots of pictures

  • Redsmom

It was suggested that I join your group!  My son goes through PIR next week!  He is a PACT Airman and will be heading to Pensacola.  Anything I should know?

  • AJ'S Proud Mommy

Redsmom my son is also A PACT he graduated on 3/4 and is in Pensacola right now
  • Redsmom

Thanks for responding!  So, how does he like it?

  • MamaValley

Good Morning - I usually lurk on this site but I thought I would share.  My son went through PIR in July of 2015.  He spent about a month in Pensacola going through the quick training that they do for APACT sailors. He had a hard time adjusting at first when he got to Pensacola... he was "free" and after BC wasn't quite sure what to do.  He did eventually get the daily routine figured out and was fine.  After Pensacola he was able to come home for 10 days to visit.  That was great!!

He then transferred to Norfolk.  His ship was in dry dock so he spent time living on a barge while helping get the ship ready to get back in the water.  He did a whole lot of clean up chores...  His ship is back in the water and now is doing shakedown cruises to get ready for deployment.  Right now he is on Cranking duty... not his favorite but everyone has to do it so it's not too bad.  He has about a month left.  He told me last week that they were happy with his performance so they moved him up from the regular mess up to the officer's mess.

I too was worried about him being an APACT when he joined.  The things I had read were not great... but he is my one son who goes with the flow.  He wanted to get started on his journey so he took what they had.  He is pretty sure he knows what he wants to do so sometime in the fall he will strike for a position.

His ship will be in New York for Fleet Week so we will go down to see him... very excited about that!

  • AJ'S Proud Mommy

He is absolutely loving Pensacola, he will be there till april 4th home for 2 weeks then the 18th he will be off to Washington State and the USS Nimitz
  • debwojo64

@ AJ's Proud Mommy....My son is a PACT Airman as well, however only completed first week of BC.  When your son graduated did he leave the next day for Pensacola?

  • Redsmom

Mine was unsure how long he'd be there.  Guess that will be revealed in good time!  But, from there, home, then to wherever they assign him!

Do they have an assigned place to stay?

  • AJ'S Proud Mommy

Debwojo64 he graduated 3/4 he was up by 0030 to leave for the airport sat morn on the plane by 0600
  • AJ'S Proud Mommy

He had his orders on where he was going by graduation week
  • debwojo64

Ok thanks.  I was wondering if my son would leave the next morning.  Did you go and meet him at the airport so you could give him his electronics?

  • ReneeHum

debwojo64 yes you can go to airport that morning and stay with him tell he goes on plane. My son graduated 10/30/15 had to be at airport 5 am Saturday  morning we had breakfast together then just sat around tell he boarded. He can take what every he can fit in his bags.

  • debwojo64

    Thank you ReneeHum :)

  • AJ'S Proud Mommy

Yes i met him there and stayed with him, once they go through security family members can get gate passes to go with them till they board
  • Jeanne

I am anxious to hear of other A-PACT sons/daughters experiences! My son has PIR on 4/29/16.  He will come to Pensacola (near us) and then who knows!

  • Boboshaw67

My son goes to BC on 4/4 (yikes two weeks) and he says he will only be in A-School in Pensacola for two weeks.  I know I'm thinking and worrying way ahead.  He doesn't give much detail.  Maybe he doesn't get much either!

  • ReneeHum

Boboshaw67 , Hi they don't get info in tell they get there. So about 2 weeks in you will find out where & when there done. Good luck, My son Love Pensacola.

  • Mrents

Hello, my son's PIR date is 4/15/16. He also is A-PACT. Thank-you for all the good info Renee-Hum. I'm trying to write info (what I'm learning) to him so he will get an idea on what to expect and how it works. So two weeks after arriving in Pensacola he will learn where he goes from there?
  • AJ'S Proud Mommy

My don is APACT, PIR 3/4 he knew where he was going before he left basic
  • ReneeHum

Mrents That's how it was for my son. After Pensacola came home for 10 days then went to his new base.

  • MB

hello, I was wondering if anyone can give me some insights; my son has been enlisted for 2yrs now and has not yet been assigned a job.  Can anyone help me to understand

  • MB

He is an E3 and has been choosing every month but nothing

  • Michael

My husband is the same but you have to talk to your son as to why he's not struck a rating. My husband is in boot camp and will prolly strike a rating as he's a go getter and does not take no for answer. He will keep working hard to get what he wants. If you want a good answer from these smart people in here you might need to give more information. :). We are all here to help
  • ReneeHum

MB - I wish I could help you but my son has only been in 6 months. I was wondering the same thing how long. Good luck

  • jill3538

Replying to Michael's comment, I was under the impression that being undesignated you could not strike for a rating for a minimum of 1 year after getting your orders. Is that not true?
  • Vickie360

My son has been in about a year and half. He told me he can strike for a rate next month. The rats he wants is overmanned so he might have to go for something different. It is true that you have to serve a certain amount of time before you can strike. If my son wants a certain job that is overmanned, he will have to wait longer.
  • Michael

Yes you behave to be at least. Year but the original post said he was pact for 2 years. He should have struck already. A friend of mine struck in 9 months so it all depends.
  • MB

Hello My son went to Pensacola and then to Norfolk - the thing is he has been there for almost 2yrs and is yet to stike a job.  I am told jobs are assigned if they are available and based on the wait list.  This really sucks cause what can you learn in 2yrs; cleaning floors etc.. I am very disappointed with the military for this.

  • Michael

Tell your son to talk to his commander. From what I know he has to advocate to his commanding officer what he wants to strike in. If he's quite then nothing will happen. Talk to Anti M. She may be a help
  • Zman'smom

My son waited a little over two years to strike for a rate. He wanted to wait for the job that he really wanted and it was worth it. He was picked up as a Cryptology Technician, went to A School, and is currently in C School. He told me that he is glad that he went in undesignated because it gave him time to learn a lot and that he wouldn't have chosen this job when he first signed up. This job really fits his strengths from what I can tell, but I don't know much about it because it is a highly classified position and he can tell me very little. I am so happy for him with how everything has worked out. He has grown so much from this experience. Best of luck to your sailors!
