coachjb: No ,the confirmation call would be from your new sailor saying they completed BattleStations and will graduate. There will be nothing issued from RTC. If your SR graduates, their name will be listed at the gate on PIR day. If not, they won't be listed.
Now, if a SR calls home within a week of PIR and says that he/she failed their PFA (fitness) test, you are not to go to PIR unless they call again to tell you they passed. That is the hard part because they have up until Wed before PIR to pass it and still be at PIR in most instances....and many families have travel plans that day. So--- hope that no one gets that call that kind of puts travel plans on hold! Having said that, most will pass it before PIR and be there!
They actually graduate after BattleStations, and have a capping ceremony the morning they finish. It is then that they trade their RECRUIT caps for their NAVY caps! The PIR....Pass in Review....is a ceremony to honor them for their accomplishment.
Diannep wow hope I get a call today she was so upset the last time we spoke she describe it as being in Jail she was a correctional officer before going in I don't no when is a good time to book
No harm in booking your hotel room now, coachjb. There is no penalty if you need to cancel for any reason, usually up to day of arrival. Are you planning to fly? If so, if you can book with Southwest Airlines into either Milwaukee (45 min drive to GL,no traffic, cheaper car rental) or Chicago Midway, (hour+ drive to GL, depending on traffic).....Southwest doesn't charge a change fee if your SR is delayed for any reason and 2 bags check for free.
My son too described Bootcamp as being in jail when he was up there, because they have no control over what they can do! HA! Remind your SR that A School is much better. They are back in touch with family/friends then! So she can do this!
Thanks diannep I will be flying in on Spirit I am from Chicago and my son stay in Olympia Fields so he will pick me up I just didn't want to be bothered with refunding tickets I been hoping for a call today
Just got a call from my SR feels great she has passed every thing so far says they have a overflow list for the graduation she said she is going to Sea don't no where but her job will be on the ship
That's what We thought to but today she ask for extra names for her list she said they have a overflow she said she is a seaman do that mean she will have to stay on the ship
You can also contact Sarge at 847-212-0246 to let him know you are interested in starting a Basket Project and are waiting for Yorkiefan to respond. Maybe he could get her to contact you. Maybe she isn't on here as much lately~~
I'm glad I could help you with scripture selection! :)
coachjb: Hmmmm....I think what your SR is saying is that the extras may be able to go into the Chapel on base and watch the Livestream. They will NOT be allowed in PIR Hall to watch the live service....if you take extras to PIR, please be sure that you have return transportation in place for them in case they are denied access to the base. This has happened both ways in previous groups...some allowed into the Chapel, some were not. If taking a shuttle from a hotel, they should be able to return you to the hotel if necessary.
My son was a SN (seaman) after graduation but they all don't attend A School in GL. That is just the pay level that they are....E-3. My son went to A School in Mississippi.
He has three stripes on the left sleeve of his dress uniform and while he has a rate – seaman 1st class, the rank for the E-3 pay rate in the Navy -- he’s probably training for one of the many ratings that will be his profession throughout his enlisted career. The duties of a Navy seaman 1st class may be many, but they often fall into one of two categories: either he’s a student learning his Navy job or he’s a seagoing janitor. The seaman 1st class is often the reason those nice, clean Navy ships look that way.
coachjb: Yes, there are deductions made from their first paychecks to take out for uniforms, their supplies at Bootcamp, etc. Nothing is given to them! Many don't realize that their first couple of paychecks are pretty low because of this and they wonder what happened.
If a SR is discharged during Bootcamp after they have paid for uniforms, it doesn't matter....they are sent home usually in their Navy sweats and the uniforms stay there. Even though they paid for them, they are not theirs if they are separated from the Navy.
You are very welcome, Q'smomKim. Just too much info sometimes and it can get very confusing! And the Navy lets the SRs/sailors know things on a "need to know" basis which makes it even harder to figure things out sometimes! :-)
Okay that's different. I will do a couple of posts t explain the difference.
Quickly though, your son will have training in GL directly following BC. It is not an A school as he is Undesignated...meaning he does not have a designated Rating. It is further training to prepare them to go out into the fleet. It takes about two -three weeks. Then they may take some Leave before reporting to fleet.
PACT stands for - Professional Apprenticeship Career Tracks.
If your SR is an Undesignated Sailor in the PACT program then they are either S-PACT, A-PACT or E-PACT.
A-PACT - Aviation/Airman Professional Apprentice Track
E-PACT - Engineering/Fireman Professional Apprentice Track
S-PACT - Surface/Seaman Professional Apprentice Track
ALL of the personnel in the Navy are Sailors. Within it there are Career Fields. Seamen, Airmen, Firemen and Constructionmen (Seabees).
Each Field has many Ratings within it.
[Example - Our son is a Construstionman (Seabee) CN (E-3 Pay grade)and his Rating is Builder - BU.]
PACT Sailors go into the Navy without a designated Rating (Occupational Specialty) BUT they are assigned a Field (Seabees do not have Undesignated Sailors).
After BC they will go for a training course in fundamental skills for that Field and usually will perform duties within that Field at their first duty station.
This is never guaranteed as the "needs of the Navy" always come first. (That actually applies to ALL Sailors...if it needs to get done then it needs to get done :-)). All will be expected to scrub a toilet, shine some brass etc. at some point.
Thy may have the opportunity to "strike" (apply) for a rating at some point. I do not know the time frame, requirements or ease of doing so. I will provide some links that you can read though.
I believe the highest pay grade they can reach is E-3.
S-PACT and E-PACT train at Great Lakes after BC and A-PACT train in Pensacola, Fl after BC.
You will be able to see the sleeve insignia and colors associated with each rate. They wear their rate and rating insignia on their left sleeve of their dress uniform. As they "rank up" these are worn in different ways on different uniforms. The article will explain it.
A Seaman or SN (abbreviated) is an E-3 like was stated. An E-2 in the Seaman Field would be a Seaman Apprentice or SA and an E-1 would be a Seaman Recruit or SR.
This goes for the other Fields as well -Recruit, Apprentice (Field)+man for E-1 to E-3. Airman Recruit=AR and so on.
Your recruits are all referred to as "SR" in BC. Some may have actually entered with some College and have gone in as an E-3 but they will not "earn" that rate title until after BC is successfully completed.
Some may also enter at the E-1 level and "rank up" (yes, they call it that even though it is rate!) during BC. There are various ways to earn this in BC.
If my sailor got his DEP book signed by his recruiter and he passed the DEP test in the beginning of boot camp. When will he find out if he passed the DEP test and if he is an E2? Will he be getting paid the rate of E2 during boot camp just not recognized as an E2 until PIR?

What diannep was explaining was the level of the Sailors Rate.
Enlisted personnel in the Navy have "rate" and Officers have "Rank".
Rate/Paygrade has nine levels.
See this WIki on an explanation (rather than me typing it all out) :
List of United States Navy enlisted rates
You will be able to see the sleeve insignia and colors associated with each rate. They wear their rate and rating insignia on their left sleeve of their dress uniform. As they "rank up" these are worn in different ways on different uniforms. The article will explain it.
