lauren, those looms are great! I just came from the church group and started learning how to do the infant/baby hats. they have a great need for those. they also collect enough for the homeless to pass out by November and send out for Military by December. but those baby hats will be quick enough to work on.
  • Karen (KC's mom)

you can also go to youtube.com and view video demonstrations on how to learn to use the looms.
  • Karen (KC's mom)

lauren, i'll have to look up your pics another time. just got frustrated trying to get to them just now. wish there was an easier way to bring them up. oh, duh, are they not posted up above where Inga has a link for photos? just noticed that above.
  • lauren

Ok Karen sorry but the blankets were posted before we have the discussion for them
I went back and copied them and reposted up in the discussion...I also started copying the others that aren't in the discussion so that it will be easier for everyone to enjoy them.....It is time consuming so bear with me ...(also I hope I get the correct names with the blankets....I'm using the name in the original post if it is wronf sorry and let me know I'll get it changed ....PEACE
  • Karen (KC's mom)

    thanks lauren.
  • LLovesmysailor

I just got back for vacation and I've missed so much. How many blankets did we get for the Tennessee? How long do we have for the Higgins and how many sailors are on board? Forgive me if all these questions have been asked before.

  • LLovesmysailor

Hi lauren, I'm still unpacking from the move. I found my yarn the other day and I'm getting started on a crotched afgan. It feels good to get back to working on something for the Navy.
  • lauren

Oh Lynn that just sounds like so much fun.....I wish I could pack everything up in a pod and then paint and change a feww things .......I'd feel like a had a new "clean" home....it would be sooooo nice.
Ok Miss M.I.A. Terri.....lol....did you get the box I sent?????
I really think that there must be a cheaper way to do tis . it seems crazy to spend 18.00 to ship something to you and then the group have to resend ...any ideas out there?????
The weather is beautiful today so I should be tired enough tonight to sit and crochet....
  • lauren

oh yeah someone in my area is giving away crochet pattern and books .if anyone is intrested in them I'm willing to pick them up and shipp them out....I can't read a pattern
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I'm also on the sub mom's list. I'll check there and see if the Tennessee is deployed.
  • lauren

Terri since it is a sub. having a son on a sub....We don't want to KNOW where they are or when they will be back..".they aren't supposed to tell us". ......We could try to get a hold of the ombudsman it see if she can give us a shipping address I will try and contact her or maybe we could ship them to the Higgins and the next bunch to the TN...just a thought
  • lauren

First off Ken's mom....WOOHOO for you and yours.
I also think that Anita's has a great idea and if we can figure how to grow our group I'd be all for it .......but look up Terri your baby is 91 STRONG.......
I missed out on the crochet books but now that I know that someone would want them. I will take them and then ask next time
Terri I really think we could swap who we ship to ......that way you can get rid of some the boxes.
I got my grades and I have to share because it was such a physically hard semester.....I got 3A's and 1B so I'm happy I stuck it out
  • lauren

Anita I'm right there with you on the prayers........And Debbie we like good men in our Great State of Illionis so your son can stay for as long as needed........huggs...........and I don't know if anybody knows about the sailor rescue group .............maybe we could start a discussion about prayer shawls there, the info on the need might reach that group first ......and there is a care package group over on Navy for dads that might have some needed info....Anita that is also what some of have done was go out to our other groups and spread the word about this group.....and it worked a little...........so we are all in different groups that is realy cool...........ok Terri I got back on the crochet train.......I had a book I wanted to read and i stayed up till 3:30A and then back up about 6:30 this morning and got it done .....the book was Crazy Love ....it is about D.V. and recommened it to everyone male and female......especially our young ones looking to getting into a relationship..........so my feet are now up on the foot stool for to the blanket i go ..............peace and blessing this weekend
love you all lauren.......Kel's mom USS TUCSON

Hi Terri, I've been off line for a little while,so I've missed a lot. Are we still doing afgans for the Higgins? I'm working on a pink afgan. Should I stop that one and go back to making one more suited to the guys on a sub? Any luck getting in touch with the Tennessee? May I suggest finding a Tennessee wife? She might help with the delivery or timing for the sub.
  • lauren

There are women on the ships but, not on the subs .
Anita I think that you could start a group for siblings on either sites.....There are mom groups over on N4D's and Terri started a Knitting group over there to join this one .....it is a cool site and privately run by one of the dad's I love both site's
Everyone have a wonderful blessed weekend
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I thougtht I'd remind you that if you are still interested in applying to Westinghouse for the grant money, now is the time to make out the forms. The next awards are scheduled for July 1st. If you need any of the information, I can send that to you.
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I've finally finished the afgan that I started before we moved. I'll be sending it on to you later in the week. I'd be glad to sew the squares together for you. I really don't mind doing it.
  • LLovesmysailor

Hi Terri, I don't mind at all. My mother, who passed away last fall, loved to knit. However, she never sewed anything. She'd knit everything from baby sweaters to afgans. Then she'd say to me,"you don't mind putting this together for me, do you?" We were making great progress in unpacking, until we tried to replace the dishwasher. Thats when we discovered the previous owner had tiled the legs to the floor. After much consideration, I decided that the only way to deal with the situation was to replace the entire kitchen. Now the joke in the family is that the dishwasher is costing $12,000. Anyway, I'm now in the process of packing everything from the old kitchen back into boxes. Oh well, since I can't cook, I'll have plenty of time to knit and crotchet.
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I'm mailing an afgan off to you this afternoon. Its the pink one I started ages ago. I'm working on a knitted on now and will hopefully have that one done by early July.
  • Anita B. (Josh's Mom)

JerseyMom...I'd like to see a pattern for a BB also and what is the size of it? Is it crocheted? Looking for something to do while watching TV in the evenings.
  • LLovesmysailor

We had some seriously bad weather last night. There were tornado warnings all over the place. So, I started knitting to keep occupied. I finished about 1/4th of an afgan last night. We're expecting more heavy weather tomorrow, so I might have another afgan for you very soon. BTW, did you find the check in the box?
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I'm working on another afgan (knitted this time). I was wondering what ship or boat are we working on now and how are we doing?
  • LLovesmysailor

Ordy, Are you looking for something Knitted, Crotcheted or Quilted?
  • lauren

oh my I wish i was talented enough I'd sure work on one for you ....
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, Don't worry about Ordy. I've got it covered. I'm also working on a knitted afgan for my next blanket. I knit slower than I crotchet, so this one will take a bit longer to finish. I had no idea this "being retired" thing could be so busy.
  • LLovesmysailor

A while ago some one mentioned a book called The Good Yarn or The Shoppe on Blossom Street. I was looking for something to read so I checked out these two books. I'd like to say thanks for the suggestion and the knitting patterns in the front of the books are really nice.
  • LLovesmysailor

Anita, I haven't joined her reader's club, but I plan on it in the future. I enjoy her writing.
  • LLovesmysailor

Hey MommsyT, welcome. Its always good to see you members.
  • LLovesmysailor

Hi all, I'm just finishing my packing. I'm going down to spend the 4th with my son in Norfolk. He's closing on his first home tomorrow, so we'll be helping him move. But don't worry, I'm taking my knitting with me. Hope everyone has a great 4th of July.
  • lauren

SeaBee I've used "Girls" colors for a few of the afghans I've made..........we just know that if we are working on them for a sub....its all guys.........welcome all Have not talked to you in a long time.....well be sending out a box to you soon Terri.....sorrry not as many as when it was cold.........huggs
  • LLovesmysailor

Hi Terri, I'm back from Norfolk and working hard on my afgan. I've totally lost track of which ship we are working on. When are you picking the next ship?

I should have a couple of blankets to ship to you sometime next week.
  • LLovesmysailor

Gayle, You have the cutest dogs. My son left his cat with us when he left for the Navy. I always told people she was my foster cat. Sure enough, as soon as he could move off base, he came home and took his cat back with him to Norfolk.
  • LLovesmysailor

Terri, I have a couple of blankets done. I'll be sending them off at the end of the week.
  • LLovesmysailor

I now live in a small space, so I can't keep too many things around. I have finished reading the Blossom Street books, A Good Yarn and The Shoppe on Blossom street. Those are the ones we talk about a while back. I also have a Vogue Knitting Mag with mitten patterns. If anyone is interested, just let me know and I'll ship them to you.
  • LLovesmysailor

Melanie, We haven't heard from Terri since June 29th. So I don't know exactly what is going on. If you add me as a friend I have several easy projects I can send you.
I keep trying to find out what is going on with the afgans for the Mason and if we have given up on the sub. As far as I can tell the last ship or boat was chosen back in Feb, Does anyone out there know anything? Perhaps Terri's son's ship has gotten back from deployment. I just don't want to send anything to her if she isn't there to get the package???
  • LLovesmysailor

While we are waiting to hear from Terri, I have a small project that some of you might be interested in. I'm starting to make scarfs for this winter. They will be knitted, crotcheted or made from fleece. If anyone is interested please contact me. I'll be sending them off this fall and winter so there is a lot of time. There are specific requirements because they are for military personnel.
  • LLovesmysailor

grace, the scarves that I'm doing can't be too bulky because the guys wear them with or under part of their uniform. I use regular worsted weight or sport yarn. They must be no wider than 8 inches and no longer than 60 inches but can be shorter. Also, no fringe or any kind. It could get caught in equipment. They need to be in desert camo or a beige color. Something that will blend in with their uniforms.
  • LLovesmysailor

grace, No I don't use any particular pattern. I also crotchet. When I do I just use a double crotchet. You can adapt just about any scarf pattern, but I usually just knit on both sides. It is better if the scarf doesn't have too many open areas, so things don't get caught on it. Also, It makes the scarf warmer, I think. As for the afgans, I use whatever pattern I think goes well with the yarn I'm using. Have fun.
  • lauren

Ok it has been awhile since I have been on here and really need to catch-up How is everyone doing??
Gayle I think the dropiing a line on facebook is a great way it get intrest....
I'm concerned about Terri....but I'm sure we'll hear from her soon
I hope you all have great weekends
  • LLovesmysailor

grace, The scarfs I do go to the Stan and they all wear BDUs. So that's why the desert camo colors. The scarfs need to blend in and not stand out. My oldest is very happy about the Navy uniform change. It does away with a lot of stuff he has no room for in his closet.
  • lauren

Debbie I'm going to send a card out today and I will email and facebook her ...but have not heard anything either ...I might have her # some where I'll look
  • LLovesmysailor

Debbie, we haven't heard from Terri in a few months and don't know the status of what she had planned. If you want to keep in touch, add me as a friend and I can send you some options to work on until we hear from Terri.
  • LLovesmysailor

Christine, Getting your Dolphins (or Fish) is a huge deal to a submariner. Actually, they can't call themselves Submariners until they get their Dolphins. I suggest you check out Sub Moms, there is a wonderful description if the Sub Pin and how they get them. BTW, making fleece blankets is really easy and fast.
  • LLovesmysailor

I finally gotten the scarf project worked out. The scarfs will be going to sailors and maybe some marines as well for a large Christmas project. I'm going to put more information in a Discussion above.
  • Anita B. (Josh's Mom)

Christine..you can order a "rack sac" for your sailor and they will embroider his name on it and it's quite warn enough on the ships. I sewed a tape on for my son that read "Have a good sleep. I love you, MOM". He really did like it and it's not bulky or anything. Good luck. My son is 6'3".
  • LLovesmysailor

We haven't heard from Terri since June 29th. I started the scarf project to keep everyone busy and to get ready for the big Christmas project on Molly's adopt a sailor. Then if Terri returns and wants to send afgans again the group will still be here. Without a project to work on, we would all just drift away. So when you are done with those babies, join us on the Scarfs for Christmas project.
