    List of Homeports

    Homeports and the Ships Assigned

The following is an alphabetical list of the various homeports. Please note that ships stationed overseas in Italy and Japan are forward deployed in those ports, not homeported there. Within each homeport listing is an alphabetical list of ships and their mailing addresses. Ships which are named for individuals are listed by the first name of that individual. For example, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is listed under the "D" rather than the "E". Ships that are USNS are those operated with a civilian master and crew by the Military Sealift Command.

  • Dianne

Melissa, how come not all the ships attached to a carrier go out with the carrier? The Benfold is attached to the Reagen and they aren't scheduled to go out for months.
  • Melissa (Tucson)

When the carriers and amphious ships deploy, they always have a "mission". Depending on what that mission is dictates the number of frigates, cruisers, destroyers and subs deploy with it. As soon as I see some Navy needs about a "mission" I'll post it in here to use as an example. How's Tim doing??
  • Dianne

He has his ups and downs. They will be back into port tomorrow after being out for a week. They go out quite often for very short trips.
  • Melissa (Tucson)

    Did he finish his cranking?

    Reagan, strike group deploying today

    Staff report
    Posted : Wednesday May 27, 2009 6:06:45 EDT

SAN DIEGO — Several thousand sailors will say their goodbyes and leave Wednesday morning for a scheduled deployment to the western Pacific with the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan and its five-ship strike group, officials said.

The Nimitz-class Reagan, the flagship for Carrier Group 7, will deploy with the guided-missile cruiser Chancellorsville, guided-missile frigate Thach and guided-missile destroyers Decatur, Gridley and Howard, all based in San Diego.
  • Dianne

No, they don't do cranking on these short trips. He actually does sonar stuff.
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Why thank you Karen! :) I LOVE the SD webcam! It's my favorite vacation spot.
  • Melissa (Tucson)

    Hi Michele & welcome!

I did a search for discussions where the USS Howard was mentioned and here's the link:

    http://www.navyformoms.com/main/search/search?q=USS+Howard

P.S. Anytime you want to search this site, just use the search window up in the far right hand corner.... :)

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
  • Dianne

Welcome, Michele, I think our sons were in boot camp at the same time and PIR'd on the same date.

    Jackie, that's cool!!
  • Dianne

He is on the Benfold in San Diego.
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Hi all, Jackie I seen your note on the destroyer show and I've been searching for it on Direct TV but didn't know the exact name. Think I did see something called Super Warship. They tend to replay those shows over for awhile so I might still get to catch it.

They did a special on building the new USS George Bush and I thought it was a facinating show, the pride of those ship yard workers were just amazing.

Ali - do you get info from the Mustin's website and newsletter? Does it travel with the USS GEo. Washington? We lived in Yokosuka for a number of years and loved it there. Our sailor son was born at the USNH of Yokosuka.
  • Dianne

Michelle, my son was in div 362 PIR'd 9/26 too. That really seems like a life time ago!!
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Ali, you might ask your son if he can sign you up with the Ombudsman so you can get the ship newsletters. Generally the sailor has to put you on the list. Due to OPSEC, the website is probably very limited to what it can post but the newsletters I enjoy reading and often they will include photos from the different ports, etc. that they have visited. Are you a member of the Japan Moms room? You'll probably find some other Mustin families there as well.

Jackie, I bet that series pops up again. I just know I would probably never watch it more than once, I'm like that with most movies too. Another thought might be the library, our library rents out dvds just like a book but typically they are from the national Georgraphic or Discovery, etc. ...they might be a great place to find this series. I will try to check in the next couple of days.

Susan, how wonderful to have your sailor home, the time goes by way too quickly. I was just happy to get a phone call from our son today :-)

    Have a great evening ladies.
  • Dianne

Welcome, Maureen, in the area right above there are instructions on contacting the Ombudsman. You can also use the search box in the upper right corner to search for others with the USS Cape Saint George.
  • Melissa (Tucson)

    Hi Maureen!
Welcome to our little group. My son was almost stationed on the USS Cape St George, by the way it's a cruiser, not a destroyer, but you are most welcome to join us here. I'm not even sure if there is a "Cruiser" group.

In the upper right hand corner of this page is the search window. Just enter the ships name and any discussions involving the Cape St George will come up. You will need to click on the member's name to take you to their page. If you need help, just holler, we're a rather friendly and helpful group! :)

Here's a picture of the USS Cape St George in SD at Christmas:

  • Melissa (Tucson)

Karen: Is one of your Sailors a HT? My son spent a lot of time chipping and painting the deck. Wish this new product would help the rust problem too!
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Matt had a full month of on deployment and he was SO glad when it was over! Makes him appreciate his REAL job. lol
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Don't tell John this, Matt waited 9 months to start his "real" job. And now that they're back in home port he really can't do much sonar stuff. But he's sure happy to be done with cranking and being "loaned" out to other divisions.
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Karen, what ship in Dave on? Clay is still on the USS Devastator?
  • Dianne

LOL Karen, we knew what you meant!
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Good morning ladies, you bring me chuckles this morning as I read your stories of chipping and cranking. I was thinking perhaps I need to send a Thank you card to the Navy, these are skills that our son did not have when he reported to the Navy.

And they can be long lasting...my hubby still does his own ironing :-)
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Matt's been home 3 times since he joined the Navy and he's worse now then he ever was! Still haven't seen him iron. He claims he does.
  • KatK

My son will be heading to a destroyer out of Japan. What do I need to know? This will be his first assignment.
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

You need to know that most sailors really enjoy Japan, so much to see and do there. He will go thru an indoc class when he arrives that will teach him much about the customs and what not to do. Such as...never stick your chopsticks staight up in your rice! It is very insulting to the Japanese. Crime rate is low, Japanese love practicing their English skills so many speak English. It is expensive to live in Japan so he will want to take advantage of the ship's galley or at least use the commissary on base. He can buy the newest/greatest electronics on base so don't worry about packing a camera - he'll probably buy a new one. MWR is fabulous there and always has one day trips (or longer) for the military at discounts to see the country. Transportation via subway, bus and trains is awesome. Fast, clean and fair priced. Many sailors do buy cars while living there, you have to pass a driving test (I failed my first one) but as a sailor pcs to another command they sell their cars cheap so he may want to do that later.

You should join the Japan Moms group if you have not already. Will he be stationed in Yokosuka or ? Yokosuka is the largest Navy base there and has a full size hospital (our son was born there) There are so many Americans there - he won't hardly realize he is in a foreign country. Which destroyer will he be heading to Kat? The ship will assign him a sponsor and they should help answer his questions about the ship, living arrangements, transportation to the base, etc. Good luck to him~!
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Melissa, I never seen Nick iron either...I think it's general principal with him. He does not want his momma to know he can do those kinda things!
  • Dianne

I totally agree, my son is messier than now than before he left...who knew it was possible!!!

Mary, that is some great advice for KatK!!
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Mary is ALWAYS full of good advice....
  • KatK

Thanks, Mary for all the great info. He will be assigned to the USS FItzgerald and I think he will be Yokosuka. As I get more info I'm sure I will be asking all sorts of questions. I took your advice and joined the Japan group, too.
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Welcome Tina: I would first find the command website. Most have a welcome aboard section with a lot of helpful links. Hopefully Mary will pop in here and have some terrific advice on moving a Navy family!
  • KatK

Can someone tell me what destroyers do? I know what carriers do but not sure what destroyers do.
  • Melissa (Tucson)

    Found this on Wiki:

    IT DESTROYS!!!!!
    * In the late 1800's they were called "torpedo boat destroyers." As years went by the name was shortened, just as "battle-ships of the line" became battleships, and "aircraft carriers" are coming to be known simply as carriers.

    * The idea was to protect the larger warships; battleships and cruisers, from enemy torpedo boats, and they did so by surrounding them; the destroyer screen. Later, torpedo boats became less of a threat, but aircraft and submarines arrived to replace them, and the destroyer was still needed to operate with cruisers, battleships, and carriers.

    * In the past, it was easy to distinguish cruiser from destroyer by their sizes, but today that difference is less apparent. The Spruance class destroyer and Ticonderoga class cruiser are actually built on the same hull. Cruisers are primarily command-and-control ships now, and destroyers still do what they do. They provide a ring of protection for the carriers and cruisers with which they operate, but they are also capable of operating alone.
  • KatK

Thanks Melissa. I thought that was what they did but wasn't for sure. I knew the destroyer moms would know for sure.
  • KatK

Thanks, Dee. I know my son will love that especially the anti-submarine warfare.
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Good morning ladies! It's official - our son got orders this morning!! He was first pick and had a choice between Hawaii and Norfolk. Do I need to tell you I will be getting a grass skirt soon?!!

Off to the USS Chung Hoon DDG-93 in the fall. Do we have any other members on the Hoon in the room?
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Good Morning Miss Mary and congratulations to our Nick!!

Searched this site for Chung Hoon Moms, you may be the only one. Hoppi adopted that ship last Feburary for the Girl Scout cookies thing. Was she assigned to that ship at one time????
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Mary there is a Chung Hoon group with one member. So no activity since last January. But you can change all that!! :)
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Nope Hoppi was not on that ship and one of the boot camp moms from Nick's division started that cookie drive and Hoppie offered to help support it. If only there would have waited a year!!!

I found Ann has a son on the Hoon!!! There is a private group with one member for the ship and she has not been active for many months from what I can tell.

Hate to do it but there just might be a new USS Chung Hoon group by the end of the day!

    girl Pictures, Images and Photos

    Good morning!
It's Flag Day ladies, I hope we see many flags waving for our military today.
  • Dianne

    Cute, Mary!!
  • KatK

Pray for the sailors on the USS John McCain possibly going into harms way.
  • Dianne

My prayers are with all those Military in harms way right now.
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Hey Margie, it was wonderful meeting you and I thought it was so wonderful that your son took time from his leave to join us for dinner. I appreciated him sharing what life at GITMO is like. Did you see the photos yet of him and MCPON West? If not I can send you a link. I think it will be early fall before Nick reports to Hawaii but we are still waiting on the specifics, I did not realize you have two sailors! Perhaps our sons will get to cross paths at some point.

Thinking of our McCain Sailors today and knowing that they are well trained and prepared. So sorry to hear about their morale -- can we send a card?
  • Melissa (Tucson)

Mary, OPSEC wise, can we send the cards to the CMC on the McCain and post his name and address on here?
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Melissa, I would not post the CMCs name on here without his permission first. The ombudsman for the McCain might have a suggestion for how to address the cards or she might be able to ask in her communications with the ship if we can send some support their way.
  • Dianne

Wendy...shark patrol??? Oh my gosh, he really didn't need to tell you that!!
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

I have not heard about the RR extension.

With concern in certain waterways if a ship is in that vicinity, they might extended them to support or replace another ship.

I will jump out of my skin the first time I see my son's ship on the news...oh wait he has to report to his ship first!
  • Dianne

It has to be sureal to see your sailors ship on the news.
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Melinda - I had not heard that news yet today. Thanks for sharing. I know the McCain families must be delighted to hear this, now the McCampbell families...sigh
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

LuAnn, thanks for the post - I just caught up on the news.

The USS McCampbell is homeported out of Yokosuka.
