What's basic operator qualified? My husband thinks that's what my son said.
  • CTmomof3

Thanks for changing the name Sue. It was a little confusing when I looked at my name you could have thought I had 3 cryptology kids.

Hello everyone. I'm here to lend a helping hand in the questions. I've been in the Navy for 8+ years. I am a CTT1(SS). I've had the opportunity to work in several different CT areas including submarines. Feel free to ask questions. I'll give you my best Unclassified answers.

CTT1 Labrum, ever been to Hawaii??? Our son just got orders there - Direct Support/subs!!! We are all soooo excited. That was our son's first choice.
  • brady.labrum

Hey Joy! DIRSUP Subs in Hawaii is where I came from before I came recruiting. I had a blast out there. My wife misses it a lot. Cost of living is a bit high though, but you get a cost of living allowance to make up for it.

Sandi. I love CTM's. When we do missions, their main duty is to make sure the gear continues to work. They are doing their job well if there is nothing to fix. If that is the case, a lot of the guys spend their time catching up on movie-watching. We always joke that the M in CTM stands for "movies" not "maintenance." As far as the discounts are concerned, I don't think I can answer that question completely. I would call up the different airlines directly. I'm sure that they will tell you straight out either yes or no. Another good idea would be for your son to go to the local MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) office. They often can find good deals for holiday traveling.

We got better flight discounts for our navy son by just checking the internet. The military RATE was not a military DISCOUNT, except on Southwest Airlines (who does not fly out of Pensacola)!

I have already "discovered" Hale Koa!!! That place looks awesome!!!! I know where I am staying when I go visit. Now I just want to know where my son will be living!!!!

Sandi, Class 'C' school is follow-on training so that he can learn a specific specialty. For a CTM, his 'C' school will be about performing installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting for the computer equipment, networks, and software that are used on the Direct Support missions. He'll probably enjoy the 'C' school more than the 'A' school because it is more specialized. Think of it as being similar to a sailor going to Hospital Corpsman 'A' school where they learn the baseline knowledge of working in the hospital field, and the 'C' school is the Pharmacy or X-Ray technician school (specialized).

Sandi, our son just graduated from CTT A-School on Friday. We were there for the ceremony. He will stay at Corry Station for C-School that he heard will start the end of January. It is five weeks of training. He will have some leave and then he will report to Hawaii. HIs order are for Direct Support/Subs. He is soooo excited to get to Hawaii!

I have a question for an experienced mom. Do all sailors need a passport or is it only if they are being deployed soon? Son is not giving any details about this, but I know he applied for an IA assignment so needless to say I'm really worried.
  • CTmomof3

I'm just trying to prepare myself for his "news" From what I found out from someone else he's going IA to Afghanistan. I tried to get some info out of him the other day and he was not forthcoming at all. He has not admitted to anything and when I "weedle" about a deployment he told me he's not saying anything to anyone until he has all the answers because people 'freak" . As a mom I ask him a million questions all the time. So during our conversation he told me he was going to get his passport, which in turn makes me wonder why he would need one. or do they all need one as a...just in case I get deployed type of thing. Am I making sense?

Oh how I wish it was Iowa.. :)
    Navy Individual Augmentee
The Navy is moving towards incorporating IA deployments into regular sea/shore duty assignment rotations. This is being phased in over the next year. This means Sailors may detach from their current command and be assigned to the Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center or they may remain a part of their current command and return to it when they complete their IA tour
From what I understand he could be doing..anything.. over there which is why I am concerned. Most IA assignments have been to Iraq or Afghanistan.
Sara thanks, then I wonder why he's getting a passport. Maybe I'm worrying for nothing ..but...if I remember right you don't need a passport to travel in the USA AHH kids
