boot. Then comes home for Christmas. Has to report to school 12/28

Wendi, is that a choice of hers to go to CT school on 12/28? The reason I ask is the school house is closed till 1/3. Maybe she wants to get there early, but there won't be many there, it's only a skeleton crew to keep things going for fire and security checks...

Craig !!!! sent you msg but you didn't respond. how's your nephew ?????
Dec 13, 2010
Craig
Hey Linda - I read that, and just forgot to respond. My deppers website has alot of deppers on it right now, and they are asking soooo many questions. Luckily, some of the deppers I helped a couple years ago, who are active duty E4 and E5's, are fielding the question, which has more of an impact on the new deppers joining. I love these sailors coming back to help the newbies...
My nephew actually comes home Friday. Since I'm a electronics guy, he is telling me the basic electronics stuff he is learning in school. He says he "know it all" on certain sections, which I find so extremely funny, since no one "knows it all" at his point in school. Just to put him in his place, I made a simple electronics circuit that will make him go crazy. I work with many engineers that have their Masters and Docorates, only one of them was able to figure it out, and it took him 2 hours. I learned this circuit when I was going through "A" school, and our instruction told us, "Work alone, and once you figure it out, you have the day off". I think the soonest anyone got it correct was 7 hours into the class. (the class was 8 hours, so the guy only got 1 hour of liberty). It really put us in our places, and made us learn alot about not to have a big heads.
Sometimes we need to teach the newbies and to set the bar, so they will understand that they're not as smart as they think they are. ~ha

Craig, The 12/17 group that chooses to take leave have to report at I think 8:00 in 12/28. The group that graduates on 12/22 have until 1/3 I believe. They get 10 days but end up going in the hole 5 days.
Dec 14, 2010
Craig
Wendi - That makes sense. They are probably trying to prevent them from going "in the hole". It is going to be extremely boring in Pensacola, since everyone will be gone. But at least you have her for xmas.
Just curious, what flavor of CT is she? CTT? CTR? CTN? CTM?

She is CTR
I am hoping that she is still there when I have my spring break (I am a teacher). Not that I want her to be gone longer, I want an excuse to go to Florida.

TEST YOUR SAILOR PUZZLE
(just for fun)
Linda (and whoever has sailor that works with electronics)
Here is an electronics problem, that is so basic because it is just a simple electronics circuit, but yet, it is extremely hard to figure out. I learned it when I was in "A" school 33 years ago. I think if you give this puzzle to them, they will have the whole shop trying to figure it out and it will cause alot of conversation about electonics theory.
So, since your sailors are probably just chillin' while waiting for holiday routine to start, give them this to figure out.
Ask them "Do you know how to figure out simple resistor series and parallel circuits?" Beleive me, they will all say something like "Yea, that is so simple..."
Then tell them to figure this:
The givens - To make it simple, All resistors are 100 ohm (even though in my picture they 52 ohms). ie there is no tricks
Question 1: What is the total ohmage when you measure between the two orange peices.
Question 2: You replace this resistor (in second picture shown by the arrow), with a 50 ohm resistor, What is the total ohmage when you measure between the two orange peices

craig.. too funny .. omg i can't even remember how to figure this out. now im embarrassed. :( ill pass along
Dec 15, 2010
Craig
Linda - Yea it doesn't make any sense to most people. It's only for electronic type of sailors. But beleive me, they will sit for hours trying to prove their theory to one another. God know why, but it always happens. It sure makes the day go by.

Frankly, I would be impressed if he could draw a schematic on a piece of paper. Heck even that is hard.
If he does try, tell me how many sheets of paper it took...~ha

Karla~ (S 12 D 042 - PIR 1/14)
So, I posted this in the CTI group but maybe it's appropriate here. I have a question for any of you with sailors already at the DLI. We know our son flies out of Chicago on Sat after PIR for Monterey. And I'm thinking he probably won't find out what time his flight is until right before he leaves. We would like to time our flight home to be just after he leaves if possible. So I'm wondering what everyone's experience was and if there is any commonality that might give us a clue!? Chartered or Commercial? What airline? Time of day? Did they fly from O'Hare? Into Monterey or San Francisco? Thanks for any help
Dec 17, 2010
Craig
Karla, what I've seen in the past, is the CTI usually fly United, and they have a stop over in Denver. I've had 3 CTI all do this, but who knows, maybe they are doing stuff differently now....

Karla~ (S 12 D 042 - PIR 1/14)
@clockard - Haha - I think you're right about that not knowing thing. I'll probably just have to book a flight using "best guess" technology! But I thought maybe there would be some sort of common thread for the Monterey sailors!
Dec 17, 2010
Craig
Karla - If it were my kid, I would contact the Sato ticket office at Great Lakes. They might not give you information about your sailors, but if you were to say "Is there a certain flight number that sailors needing to go to Morterey California normally are reserved for?" then "My son is a CTI and will be going to Morterey California sometime around Jan 14th or so.... "
Look for Sato under "airline reservation" here:

Just a thought....

Michelle - Being a crypto dude, he really can't tell you much. Its part of our jobs. Everything that happens at work, stays at work. It's funny because I've married for 26 years, and my wife still really doesn't know what I do, except that I work with electronics. This is part of our business.
As far as deployments, very rare will they have a classified deployment, meaning he can't even tell you when he leaves. I seen only 1 in 33 years. Sailors need to work rent payments. car payments, electric payments, so they have to tell people when they deploy. I bet he's confusing "when he deploys" with "what he does when he deploys".
Just curious, what flavor of CT is he? CTI, CTT, CTR, CTN, CTN...?

Craig
Yes, both Susie and I were yaking, and I would like to bring more Crypto families to this section.
The reason? Although the large Pensacola group has alot of information about Pensacola in general, they truly don't have the information about Corry Station where most of the CT's are located. So, to get the correct information out there to help the Sailors and their families, I would to help.
Just to give you a background on myself, I am a retired CTM, my son is an active duty CTN, and my nephew is a active duty CTT wantabee (he's still in school and not rated yet). I own two Navy forum websites myself, NavyDEP.com and NavyFamilies.com, which I've been doing for years.
So I hope you enjoy some of the new stuff. And although Susie calls it a "little face life", I consider it a "boob job". I want to make this thread bigger, with alot of people looking.... ~ha.....

himmie - Welcome, we love CT's here. Between here, and the CTN section, you will find the info you need.
Just curious, it sound like he went to boot camp with out a rating, and then he got CTN while in bootcamp? Is that correct?

Pensacola is kind of a generic location. Most cryptos will go straight to Corry. Some one else will have to fill you in on Corry. Some crypto rates have to take ATT class at Pensacola NAS. My daughter got to NAS in early November, they told her she wouldn't class up for ATT until May. An officer woke her up at 0400 last Moday and told her class starts in an hour and her butt better be in a seat.
So, at least at NAS theres a chance of classing up faster than what the sailors are told when they arrive.

frazcom, I think if he's going to be there 3.5 months he will go straight to Corry (Craig will have a better answer). They will get an estimate of the class up time when they arrive But it's only an estimate in most cases. The date can be pushed up or back depending on several things.
One thing that does work in all the cryptos favor right now is, the spooks and nukes are undermanned right now. I would think there would be a fairly hard push to get them out into the fleet.
Jan 13, 2011
Craig
fraazcom - Since your son is a CTR he will go straight to Corry. NAS is for CTT under the 6 year program and the CTM's. NAS teaches them basic electronics to do their ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) job. The CTT 4 years program and CTR do COMINT (Communication Intelligence) and they don't need the electronics background, thus they don't need to go to NAS. From my own experience, the longer your in school or waiting to class up is better. This means you get more shore duty instead of being on a ship. One of the best times when I was in was holding company. It's a no brainer job and you just kick back and take it easy.
Himmie - Thank God he got CTN. CTN to me is the best job in the Navy. Alot of my friends were on the develop team that made the CTN rating. That's why I had my son go into that rating. All the CT's make a fortune when they get out, but CTN's make a bit more. The company I work for starts the CTT and CTR at $80K, then it goes up from there. CTN is an extremely hard school. So he needs to stay focused. In the fleet he will just love his job. CTN's really do some cool stuff.
Just for fun, you should send this picture to your son and say you were just checking. If he's got a sense of humor he will laugh....

Craig..... when I am able finally able to send him emails I will have to send that to him. He will get a laugh out of it. He has a great sense of humor. We didn't know he was color blind till 2nd grade. He was the only kid I knew that didn't peel the labels off the crayons. Well, he was reading the labels so he would get the correct colors.
Clockard...That is actually a good group to start. I have talked to several other moms on N4M with color blind sailors. He has problems only with certain colors but that has never stopped him from doing anything. You would never know he was color blind unless he told you so.
Jan 13, 2011
Craig
clockard - Yea, that's the point, he will ask his friends what it says, and they will look at him and just start ROFL.... Heck, I would!.....
Actually Himmie - If he holds that picture face in about 5 inches from his stomach, and looks down, he will see what it says. The colors don't play a part in it then, because he will see the outlines of the characters. Have him try it....better yet, don't because I want him to get a laugh from his friends 1st....~ha...
