Is it just Navy that trains for the CTN job at Corry Station?  Or are there other branches of the military also?
  • Jim C

Cryptos from all branches train at Corry/CID
  • Craig

Linda - I have to keep it funny.  I talk Navy all day long at work and then come to these forums at night and talk Navy too.  I need something to break up the time and to keep my brain active....  I don't want people to come back and say this:

  • himmiemom

Compared to boot camp, do these sailors get more breathing room?  Less strict rules?
  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

absolutely, but also depends on the base...more strict at NAS but more like college with rules at Corry per my son

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Oh my Craig...love the cartoon...still laughing...I can think of quite a few people I'd love to send this to!
  • himmiemom

Thanks rorysmom....  Saw some videos on youtube and reminded me of college.
  • himmiemom

I have read that A school is 6 months on one website and 3 months on another.  How long is A school usually?
  • Craig

CTN are now 7 months.  It use to be "A" (2 months)  and "C" (3 months) school, but you had to pass both to earn the rating.  Now they have just the "A" school at 7 months....
  • himmiemom

Thanks guys for getting back to me.  Why do they have to wait for classes to fill up before they start A school?  Are they waiting for more to graduate from bc?
  • Wendi, CTR mom

My daughter classes up on Tuesday. Only had to wait 3 weeks
  • Mikki Ship 09 Div 069

Hi! My SR is PIR 2/11/11 (I see Himmismom is here - our SR's are in the same PIR group). He is slated to be CTT. I will go thru and read a few pages of this group and will follow postings, but I wanted to say hi! and join in the group.   by the way, the picture is of me and my daughter-in-law. she married my SR 4 months before he left for BC
  • Craig

    Welcome Mikki....

If he's in bootcamp that means the investigators have probably already contacted your neighboors, friends, and his school....  Glad to have you aboard....

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

The day our son graduated from BC, we got a call when we were out to lunch that the investigator had just left his last place of employment and then they visited our home on the Monday after boot camp!  40 minutes with the investigator by myself...hubby was still at work....the gentleman was very nice and to the point.  I tried to keep just to the facts, no small talk, minimal answers.  Emotions didn't get to me until the end when he asked the overall question was there any reason at all I felt that my son should not be in the Navy...then I teared up and said that the Navy was darn lucky to have him!  Poor investigator probably sees all kinds of crazy stuff!  I have had many people post that they NEVER speak to the parents...well, guess what...they can and do!
  • sunshine73

Hi Everyone! My son is also at BC. Even though he is only in week 2, I am assuming that they are getting ready to begin his background check because he called home to get one of his references physical street address. He had given the PO box # on the form.  He will be a CTR after BC.   I am a teacher and was interviewed for one of my former student's clearance when he was in his last week of BC. It wasn't that bad.
  • Mikki Ship 09 Div 069

I havent talked to any investigators and seems that I might not. I do know my son came back from MEPS having been told they had looked into his background - talked about family members that have clearances, stated there was no record on my SR - they only blemishes they could find were speeding tickets on his older brother (oops!). And, he has not had to call from BC to get any extra info yet. I think he might have filled out most of the paperwork before he left - I know he did a ton of it with the recruiters.
  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Lol...absolutely clockard...!!!  Sunshine and Mikki...my son also called the lst week of BC for more references...there are many different levels of security to be cleared for...just to get into the Navy and then multiple levels...I believe Craig posted some of the different levels on here...our son is now engaged and is being told his future wife will now have a bit of investigating of herself also!  Thank God she is a great girl!
  • himmiemom

Mikki....Fancy seeing you here too!!!!!  Do you know when your SR is leaving GL for Pensacola?   I found out they my SR leaves 2/15.  He wrote me and told me he would be doing A school and C school in Pensacola.
  • idahojeep

Hi all - my twins got through bootcamp and are at Corry waiting to class up.  They are so happy to be in Pensacola instead of bootcamp at GL.  They were very nervous at first because the atmosphere is different at Corry and afaid they were doing everything wrong.  It is better this week since they have been out and about on base.  Seem to like their roommate and they got a room together with only one other guy.  I think they will settle in fine and hopefully school will start soon.  References have been contacted in person but not all for both of them.  I guess the investigations are treated completely separately as one interviewer did not have both files.

    Have a great day everyone!

  • Mayflower

My son is also in his second week, they haven't started his background checks that I know of yet, though.

  • Mayflower

Do they set up the divisions based on the job that the recruit signs up for?

  • himmiemom

My SR will be needing a cell phone when he is done with boot camp.  Is there a place for him to purchase one when he gets to Pensacola?  Or should he get one after PIR and than If he does go by charter mail it to him.
  • idahojeep

The day after PIR we met our boys and spent the day with them at the airport.  We brought their Kindles, laptops, cell phones, and mp3 players.  Corry Station was contacted by their div's RPOC and he was told "bring any f- electronic devices you want - just no civilian clothes!"

Sorry for the word for word description.  :)

  • himmiemom

Do they fly out of Ohare Airport?
  • Mikki Ship 09 Div 069

Himmiemom - I  know! funny isnt it. My SR is not good at getting the details to me.  I keep asking him when/where/how but he just doesnt think to fill in the blanks. Same old kid as always, i guess! He's the strong, silent type. My mom was saying today that she knew he would make it through this boot camp because he has so much endurance.
  • idahojeep

No kidding about the long wait at the airport.  Our boys were up at 1:00 am and to the airport at 2:30.  They called us at the hotel at 5am to ask when we were coming.  :)  We got there at 6am and spent until 5pm with them and loved every minute of it!  I never thought I would say that I loved spending all day in an airport terminal.

Himmie your sailor will be able to get a pass for you to get through the checkpoint from the airline check-in desk.  The USO people are so friendly and helpful.  You can spend your time with them in the USO office which is not inside the secure area.  Make sure you go through the military checkpoint line instead of waiting with all the other people.  Much faster!  We rode the tram to the International terminal, far fewer people there.

  • Mayflower

I feel so dumb...what is GL?

  • himmiemom

GL is Great Lakes Training Recruit Center.

  • himmiemom

Thanks guys for the helpful information on getting his items to him before he leaves for Pensacola.  Just wish I would hear from him to find out what is going on.
  • Samantha Nitewolf

Hello Ladies... My son just graduated Boot Camp in GL - and is heading your way for CTM school...  Looking forward to meeting you all and hearing about what all goes on with that school and the base down there.

  • himmiemom

Samantha Nitewolf....My SR PIR is 2/11.  Whey is your son leaving for Pensacola?
  • Samantha Nitewolf

    Thanks Dee -

Himmiemom - Call me Sam please, all my friends do.  He is actually at the airport now and will be there this afternoon.  Gotta tell you how exciting the PIR was!  It was awesome!  Freezing - but awesome!

  • idahojeep

Welcome Sam and congrats to your son!  We just went to PIR 1/7 and it was awesome!
  • Craig

Welcome Sam....  We love CT sailors!  I am a retired CTM, and I totally love the CT community.  My son is a CTN, and my nephew is in "A" school to be a CTT....  We are one huge CT family.

  • idahojeep

    Hi Craig.

Meeting the boys' investigator today on my lunch.  He said because we live in a rural area there are no neighbors to interview so he is speaking to me also.  He is doing the interview with their high school teacher today for both of them.  Very interesting this investigation stuff.

  • Craig

It is... Those invesitgators are excellent...  They know their stuff.  They will keep digging trying to find dirt, but being in a rural area, all you have is cow sh*t....(no dirt) ~ha
  • Craig

What I have always found interesting is how they can investigate people that live in a rural area, and if the kid is home schooled.  It would like be impossible to find any dirt.

These guys just love finding dirt, which rightfully so, they are invesigators.  How do they get good performance apprisals on someone they can't find anything on?

  • idahojeep

You are so right about sh*t but ours is horse stuff!  What is so funny is there is no dirt to find on these boys.  I always told them since they were small that being a peace officer I would know if they did anything they shouldn't or tried to lie.  :)  They really listened to that and we are so close anyway.

  • idahojeep

I am blessed with very good kids so I don't think there will be a problem with this investigation.  They are still waiting a couple more weeks for their CTR A school to start but will this process hold that up?

Thanks Craig you are a wealth of information!

  • idahojeep

Glad that interview is over.  The guy was very nice but thorough.  Hopefully it will be done soon.
  • himmiemom

Got a letter today from my SR.  He will be in A school in Pensacola till August 16 than onto C school.  Do they get leave anytime between the A and C school?  Or is it after C school?

  • CorinneL

Our son is in C school right now.  He will come home on leave when he's done in March.  Then he takes off for his assigned job.  He will be away from home for a whole year by the time he takes this first leave.  We did go to PIR in May and then went down to Pensacola in July to see him.  He could've gotten a chit to come home a few days over the holidays, but you can never predict what the weather will be like here in Iowa.  He also said those days would come off of his total leave time so we decided the weather in March MIGHT be more predictable.  We can still get snow storms in April.  We're keeping our fingers crossed!
  • Craig

idaho - I bet your glad that interview is over.  Heck they probe you so much you feel like you just had sex and you need a cigarette....  ~ha

himmie - There is only two time per year that a bootcamper gets to go home on leave prior to going to their 1st school, that is if you were in the Thankgiving graduation unit, or the Christmas graduating unit.  The reason they don't give leave is they don't want these freshly minted sailors going back to their own ways.

Corinne - You should have your son request HARP duty.  It would mean he could come home for 10? days (not sure the amount off the top of my head now), but it's not charged against him.  It's an awesome thing.  I think I actually posted something in clockard "CTN" group which has a link above....  You may want to tell him....

  • himmiemom

Craig.....My question was is do they get a leave between A school and C school?  or do they get one after C school?
  • Craig

Sorry about that himmie...  I read that wrong.  It all depends on the "C" school...  Different "C" schools start at different times.  So, he could be on holding company, or his pipleline might end on Friday and start again for "C" school on Monday.  You really can assume anything.
  • himmiemom

Craig...Thanks.  Just curious.  He said he graduates from A school 8/16.  It is going to be a long stretch from PIR 2/11 to that without seeing him in between.

Do they allow anything on weekends.  Like if we came down for a week and spent the weekend with him?

  • Samantha Nitewolf

    Morning everyone...

Idaho - are you a LEO?  I saw your comment on the peace officer - my husband and I are both LEO's.

We got our interview with the investigator a couple weeks ago - lasted 2 hours.  It was intense... They left here to go to his job and then talk to about 8 other people.  I was not expecting it to be that intense - and I was impressed.

I know my son is down in Pensacola now - but I have not heard from him yet.  I'm not a clingy mom - but I'd like to know what his address is so I can send down his cell phone and laptop. We upgraded his cell phone to a Droid as a graduation present and xmas present.

  • Craig

Jessica - Every sailor gets a security interview.  What I think you mean is which ratings are the ones that have investigators come to the house for interviews... Those are the guys with the SSBI.

They are CTI, CTM, CTN, CTR, CTT, IS, IT, SECF, MT.

Just so you can see where this comes from, go to the below link.  Starting about page 44, look for the ratings that have SCE checked.  Those are the ratings that need Secrets or above.  The ones that are not checked are the Confidentials.  Now scroll down till you see SSB written in I that same block.  Those are the guys that  have people come to your house.

(Note: when you 1st scroll down, you'll notice CTI isn't checked.  That was a publishing error, which was caught in a change memo)

Furture down, you will see CTI does say SSBI.

Sam - I am retired LE.  Probably kept a tight rein on the boys because of it.  But they turned out ok. :)

My sons are pretty sure they are getting 2 weeks off after A school and they are going to "work" at the recruiters so use less of their leave time.  I can't wait for them to come home.

  • Jim C

Craig, my kid had Harp for Christmaas leave. She waas told 5 days maximimum and a sailor could only do it once.  The question they couldn't answer if that was once per duty station/command or once in her career.
