I don't think he has to worry about sitting behind a desk much.  They don't send these guys to ATT school to learn electronics for nothing.

CTT combine with the Electronic Warfare (EW) about 8 years ago.  You have 4 year CTT which are the operators, and you have 6 year CTT which are the technicians.  As far as A school, it depends on whether he enlisted for 4 years or 6 years. Everyone goes through Entry Level ELINT (ELE) to learn the CTT side, and Shipboard Operations to learn the EW side. ELE is 11 weeks, and Shipboard Ops is 7 weeks.

If he enlisted for 6 years, he also goes through Maintenance school which is considerably longer. 6 year's are in school for almost an entire year longer than 4 year's.

CRAIG- I have 3 sons in the Navy- 2 made E-6.they are the older ones. then I have another who is 2 years younger(26) and the 4th is the one in school yet and might do DEP? The older ones have been with the navy 13 years now,(Twins) the other has been there I think 2003/2? I forget He is E-4 and he is on the west coast. I just don't know how the rates go. The younger one you said is in a window? What is the cut off of when you were born? I'm new with this.they went in this program with a friend of theirs he has been there a while longer.
  • TPS

Clockard, you know when my sons were home they would yack about everything and I knew what was going on in their lives. I also have a daugther that you would think she would talk but this kid is more secret then the boys You never know what she was up to. she would make a good Spook. thats the problem now with them they can't talk anymore and I know the change of subject code.LOL  I send them long e-mails I get back a one line.

I'm just curious.  When my son's detailer at MEPS gave him his rating designation, he gave him AFT-CTI.  When his recruiter found out he was designated AFT, he was excited.  But.....my son, being a typical teenager, didn't ask him what the AFT actually means for him in his training.  I've looked it up and have found out that AFT designates Advanced Field Training.  But I can't find anywhere what that actually means.  Does anyone have an idea?  I did notice another future sailor from my son's recruiting station was designated CTI without the designation of AFT, so there must be some difference.  Any ideas?
  • Lisa (A-Mac's mom)

Sorry.  I guess it's actually ATF, not AFT.  Oops. :)  So it's Advanced Technical Field.  The young lady out of his recruit station was something like 4yo-CTI.  Does that help?  This is all new to me.  My husband was a nuke, so I'm very familiar with their designators.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

I go to visit my son in Pensacola on Thursday   Will I be able to go on base? (corry station or NAS)  I'ld like to look around the NEX since I will have some time to spend before he gets out of classes on Thursday    If I can't go on base without my son, then I'll explore the town for a bit
  • Lisa (A-Mac's mom)

Angie, if you can't get on base, you'll find plenty to do in P-Cola.  It's a great town.  I went to college there at the University of West Florida.  I miss the white sand beaches desperately.  They're the most beautiful beaches I've ever been to.  The Gulf National Seashore is the longest national seashore in the United States.

    Lisa

Im not worried about finding things to do   I have been hitting up the websites online for months now doing my own little P Cola Recon    Just talked to my son...there is a commerative of MidWay going on at Corry on Friday   My son says his CO said it was fine for me to attend and that I would most likely be one of the only civilians there..my son is discouraging it   He says he will be standing in the hot sun for 7 hours looking at the pavement..

  • navymom3

Angie- We didn't need but our ID to get on the NAS base last month. Just told them we were going to the Navy Lodge to stay and pick up the son. I am not sure about Corry as we did not get there. We will have to go there next time. As my son will be over there at the end of June finally. I would still go if not to only take pics and stay a while.
  • mumziepooh

    Monica - Bodacious indeed!!!!

  • sunshine73

Angie, they will let you on Corry with just an ID and tell them you are picking up your son. You can look around the NEX but you won't be able to buy anything unless you have a military id. The nex at Corry is a lot bigger than the one on NAS. We didn't have any problems getting on NAS when our son was with us. Our son had to report in for possible watch and we tried to get back on NAS to sit at the beach until he was finished. When we were stopped at the gate they wouldn't let us back on base. If the Air museum had been open, we could have went there but it was too late. We have visited P'cola twice now but still haven't been everywhere. Our visit last weekend was wonderful.
  • Craig

Angie - I put two more items in the discussion area on places to see in Pensacola...

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/been-to-co...

Secondly, when you go to Corry, Make sure you have your sailor bring you to the Big NEX (adjacent to Corry), and not the small on located on Corry (next to the quarterdeck).  They have alot of Navy Mom type of nic-nac's....

Lisa - There is only two things I can think about your daughter length of service.

    1.  Either she's a reservist, which allows her to do things that regular Navy doesn't do (ie maybe 4 years instead of the normal 6 years).

    or

    2. Which is what I think, I bet your daughter is a 6 year sailor and you just don't realise it.  It wording is really tricky.  Here is what it says in para 8b:

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/150...

I don't think she would be a CTI-N type of CTI, she probably doesn't have the 66 credit and other items needed to be a CTI-N.  It rare if they do, and even if she was eligible to go in as a CTI-N and not a regular CTI, she would still have to have 6 years of obligated service.....

Read her contract again, I'm just curious....

  • Lisa (A-Mac's mom)

Craig, If you are responding to my question, I think you may have misunderstood.  I actually have a son.  My original question was if there is a CTI AND an AFT-CTI.  My son's recruiter asked him if the detailer put down CTI or AFT-CTI on his contract.  When my son responded he had put AFT-CTI, his recruiter was very happy.  My son didn't ask him what the difference was.

I have done research to try to figure out if there are, in fact, two designations, but can find very little on what the AFT designation means.  The only thing I've been able to find regarding AFT-CTI talks about advanced training after A school, once they reach their first duty station.  It also refers to advancement to E4 once he completes A school.

The female I was referring to is another future sailor from his recruiting station.  Her rate is listed as 4yo-CTI.

I have not seen anyone refer to AFT-CTI on any of the forums.  And his recruiter made it sound like it was something extra they put in his contract.  So I was just curious as to whether anyone had heard of it before.

  • Craig

Sorry about that Lisa, yes I did read your son as your daughter.  It gets confusing sometimes, expecially after a hard day at the spook shack ~ha....

Anyways, all the CTI are Advanced Technical Field sailors.  They don't make a different brand.  They are all obligated for 6 years.  Now, like I said before, the gal might be a reservist and I'm truly not up on what the reserve people do.  I'm mainly good at active duty type of stuff. or she might be a CTI-N.

I truly think your son's recruiter is just playing him up saying that is great he's going ATF, but everyone else is too (were only talking about CTI).  I think the recruiter wants him to feel good on what he's got.

Since you wanted to find more info, here is a link.  Your section would be pages 39 thru 49.

  • Lisa (A-Mac's mom)

Thanks, Craig.  I appreciate you taking the time after a long work day to respond. And that is exactly what I thought.  His recruiter has been......well, let me just say that he's been interesting to deal with.

You're quite generous with your time on this forum.  And I think I speak for all the moms when I say we really do appreciate you.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Angie, I went to NAS, Pensacola in April and had no problem getting on base.  I just told them my son's name, showed them my ID and they let me go on base.   I'm hoping that Corry is the same, because my son is over there now and I have a 4th of July visit planned.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

I'll let you know Betsy  (although people are telling me its no problem)   Its really difficult being at work today!  Cant wait to get up tomorrow morning and get on that plane
  • CTmomof3

Does anyone know if the reenlistment bonus has really been done away with? I have one unhappy sailor. May not reenlist and that is not a good thing. He's deployed right now so info is hard to come by.
  • navymom3

Craig posted a link to the new list it's on page 12.
  • glassdog

Craig thanks for the gosport website.  It is full of great info!
  • Craig

glassdog - Susan actually gave that link to the gosport.  (see 4 post below this one).

I LOVE LINKS.... (they clarify and show so much stuff....)

  • mumziepooh

So - where should we stay when we visit PCola from the 22-26th?  Son wants us to bring his truck - what do you think?  Is there convenient parking on base?
  • glassdog

    Thanks Susan for the link!
  • cinder

My son said there is plenty of parking on the base.
  • LAW415

Swore in today for CTR...Super excited! :)
  • Craig

LAW - That is great.  You'll find CTR is awesome.  All CT ratings are awesome.

mumzie - Parking on Corry is wide open.  Corry is an abandon air field with lots of old runways.  You won't have a problem at all....

  • Craig

kk - We do beleive in total OPSEC here, but beleive me, alot of people over do it on different areas of N4M's.  The Cryptologic section really doesn't have that much of a problem because most of the people in our group are really experienced and knows what OPSEC involves.

What people need to think is when they talk about their sailor, would that information cause harm to him, the sailors around him, or our nation?

Let's say we are talking about ships movement.  So many people think you can't say "Hey my son's ship went to Naples Italy".  That information is not OPSEC, it all public knowledge.  However, if you said in 7 days my son's ship will pull into Naples.  That information could harm your sailor or his shipmates.

Some think you can't say your sailor is a CT.  Well if he has an uniform, and he is wearing a "Crow", then it's public knowledge he's a CT.  In school they tell these sailors "Don't tell people you're a CT".  Well this is a total joke.  If this were true, all the CT names would be blacked out in the public available Navy Times or NAVADMIN messages, heck you couldn't wear your dress blues or whites off base because the "Crow" tells the story.

Lastly, what you do with your life style has nothing to do with your son.  I had a gal that worked for me. Her mom was a crack addict and a prostitute.  Did this affect her clearance? No, it didn't.  Every family has dirt.  If the sailor discloses this dirt to the investigator, then it's usually is never a problem.  The only problem that usually happens is when the information isn't disclosed and the investigator finds it.  So the bottom line is what you say here about yourself will have no effect on your sailor.  However, if you said "My son smoked alot of dope prior to going into the Navy", then you put your sailor in harm because now we aren't talking about you, we are talking about your sailor.    My advise is aways think to yourself "would that harm my sailor if the bad guys had it".  If it does, do not say it.  If it doesn't cause him harm, then talk about it.  If your son is #1 in CTT school, then be proud!  Toot your own horn!  We want to share that joy with you....

  • NavyMom4J

All information here has been very helpful to me- I sure appreciate it! Otherwise I would be in the dark on a lot - and do not want to bother my sailor with too many questions that I can find out here by reading all your helpful websites!!!  I found teh CT info- Everything you wanted to know about a CT- VERY HELPFUL!!!  Thanks Craig! you have been invaluable!

I also found out that my son has to go through two classes...he is classed up now in his first class- but he said he has a second class too. Interesting!!

  • Craig

I forgot who ask the question, but they had a high school junior that will be a senior this coming year that was thinking of joining the Navy.  I have the info you need, please let me know who you are....
  • sunshine73

I think this question has been asked but I couldn't find it...How soon after graduation from A school can sailors ship out or take leave?  My son graduates as a CTR on July 8th. He hasn't received his orders yet but thinks that he might be able to come home on leave before he reports to his duty station. We are trying to book a condo and he doesn't wanna hang around P'cola if he can come home. He says there is also a possibility that he may have to hang around a few days and ship right away. Is this just like everything else with the hurry up and wait stuff? Does anyone know how they determine this other than where they are being sent? We would like to wait with him if he does have to ship out and not come home. has this happened with any of you?
  • Craig

Theresa - Congrats to your son making E5..... Woo-hoo!
  • Craig

Here is a great video on the Battle of Midway ceremony that just happened at Corry....

Corry Station - Battle of Midway ceremony

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Theresa, that is terrific.  Congrats to him.
  • NavyMom4J

CRAIG- THANK you so much for sending the link on the Battle of Midway ceremony!!!  My son is in it!  He told me as a member of the Performing Arts- he carried the Flag during that ceremony.  I was able to view it and see him!!!  He is caring the flag in the very beginning of that video - SO SO Exciting to actually see him!!!!!   Again- thanks so much!!  He was so proud to have done that!

  • sunshine73

Thanks everyone. We plan to bring him home with us. Will he have to fly back to P'cola or will he be able to fly from here? I'm so confused and he says it is too soon to know.
  • Craig

sunshine - Does he have a car?  If not, then he may want to think of buying a cheap one.  The extra pay from Per diem, travel pay, and the travel time would pay for the car, and he would have immediate transportation once he got to where ever he's going.  My way of thinking is you can fly on their dime, or you get used car out of the deal.  I'd rather have the car.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

NavyMom4J   I saw your son, I was there for the ceremony   Boy was it HOT!  It started at 7:30 am and already it was in the 90's!  One of the officers fell out but our sailors did just fine and talk about a kleenex moment!   I just arrived back home at 1 am this morning and I will add to the discussion above about my trip.  But it was so great to spend 5 days with my son and to see how very happy he is with his career choice and that he is making great friends and having a ball

These sailors are living it up there in P Cola  after they get done working so very hard during the day

  • sunshine73

You would know that we just sold his truck 2 weeks ago. We were gonna fly down but were worried about getting his junk home (especially the seabag. we wondered how airlines charge for that) so we are just gonna drive. Flying is so much better than 14 hours in a car. 'll have him look into the travel office. Thanks a lot for your input.

Angie~I'm so happy you had a wonderful trip.

  • NavyMom4J

Angie- I am thrilled that you got to be at the ceremony- and see him- I  miss my son so much. He is trying to fill out paperwork to come home over the July 4th weekend- so I am praying that can happen- A bit more cooler here in Colorado!!!  If not- I will have to see if I can manage a trip to visit him instead.
  • Craig

Man, the new sailor are really going to benefit by this newly released Navy message....  All I can say is WOW!

    ----------------------

    REF A: PERSONNEL MANUAL

    NAVADMIN M1000.6(SERIES)

    1.  AS A RESULT OF AN OBAMA ADMINISTRATION PROPOSED FORCE REDUCTIONS AND  BUDGET CUTS, THE NAVY HAS DEVELOPED A PROGRAM TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF ACTIVE DUTY PERSONNEL.  THIS PROGRAM WILL BE EFFECTIVE 1 OCTOBER 2011.  UNDER THIS PROGRAM, OLDER SAILORS WILL BE ASKED TO GO ON EARLY  RETIREMENT, THUS PERMITTING THE RETENTION OF THE YOUNGER SAILORS WHO REPRESENT THE FUTURE.  THEREFORE, THIS PROGRAM WILL PHASE OUT OLDER  SAILORS BY JUNE OF THE FOLLOWING FISCAL YEAR.

THE INITIAL PHASE OF THE PROGRAM WILL BE KNOWN AS SLAP (SAILORS LATE-AGED PROGRAM).  SAILORS WHO ARE SLAPPED WILL BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK FOR JOBS OUTSIDE THE NAVY.  SLAPPED SAILORS CAN REQUEST A REVIEW OF THEIR PERSONNEL RECORDS BEFORE ACTUAL RETIREMENT TAKES PLACE.

    2.  THIS PHASE OF THE PROGRAM IS CALLED SCREW (SURVEY OF CAPABILITIES OF RETIRED EARLY WORKERS).  ALL SAILORS WHO HAVE BEEN SLAPPED OR SCREWED  MAY FILE AN APPEAL WITH THEIR CHAIN OF COMMAND WITH FINAL AUTHORITY AT  THE LOCAL COMMAND LEVEL.

    3.  THIS PHASE IS CALLED SHAFT (STUDY BY HIGHER AUTHORITY FOLLOWING TERMINATION).  UNDER THE TERMS OF TWO OTHER NEW POLICIES, A SAILOR MAY BE SLAPPED ONCE, SCREWED TWICE, BUT MAY BE SHAFTED AS MANY TIMES AS THE NAVY DEEMS APPROPRIATE.  IF A SAILOR FOLLOWS THE ABOVE PROCEDURES, HE/SHE WILL BE ENTITLED TO HERPES (HALF EARNINGS FOR RETIRED PERSONNEL'S EARLY
SEVERANCE) OR CLAP (COMBINED LUMP-SUM ASSISTANCE PAYMENT), UNLESS HE/SHE ALREADY HAS AIDS (ADDITIONAL INCOME FROM DEPENDENTS OR SPOUSE).

    4.  AS HERPES AND CLAP ARE CONSIDERED BENEFIT PLANS, ANY SAILOR WHO HAS RECEIVED HERPES OR CLAP WILL NO LONGER BE SLAPPED OR SCREWED BY THE NAVY.  THE NAVY WISHES TO ASSURE THE YOUNGER SAILORS WHO REMAIN ON BOARD THAT THE NAVY WILL CONTINUE ITS POLICY OF TRAINING SAILORS THROUGH OUR SPECIAL HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING (SH*T).  THE NAVY TAKES PRIDE IN THE AMOUNT OF SH*T OUR SAILORS RECEIVE AND THE FACT THAT WE HAVE GIVEN OUR SAILORS MORE SH*T THAN ANY OTHER SERVICE.  IF ANY SAILOR FEELS THEY DO NOT RECEIVE ENOUGH SH*T AT THEIR CURRENT DUTY STATION, SEE YOUR IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR IF AND WHEN THEY SHOW UP TO WORK AGAIN.  YOUR SUPERVISOR IS SPECIALLY TRAINED TO  MAKE SURE YOU RECEIVE ALL THE SH*T YOU CAN STAND.

    5.  THIS CHANGE WILL BE INCORPORATED INTO A FUTURE CHANGE TO REF A.

THE NAVY TAKES CARE OF IT'S OWN!!!!!

    ----------------------------------

Man, I just had to post this..... now a moment of silence from the crowd...I just imagine everyone face looks like this now...

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

    funny Craig!

I just added some info to the "been to corry station" discussion up above for those planning a trip

  • Craig

momofsailor - Frocking is an adminstrive authorization to assume the title and wear the uniform of the higher paygrade WITHOUT the entitlements of the pay and allowances.

First increment sailors are advanced immediately.  Second and third increments are advanced 2 and 3 months, respectively, after frocking.  The fourth category, Selectee, advance 6 months after frocking.

This benefits the sailor if they are at a command that requires them to be a certain paygrade to move off base.  That's about the only benefit.  It seems like everything else they (the Navy) wants you to work harder since your an E4.  To us sailors, Frocking and the other "F" word are interchangeable.

Your pay never gets backdated to your frocking date.  June 16 is the last incremement for advancement.  His pay will start then.

You guys know I love links... So here is the offical Navy one concerning Frocking....

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/140...

Now some education, even though it is sad....

If a sailor is frocked to the next rank but leaves the navy before the actual advancement, his departing rank remains the same. An Selectee who leaves the navy before the six months will remain an upon separation from the Navy.

Remember when the USS Cole was bombed by terrorist in Yemen?  Well, HT2 Clodfelter, EW1 Rux, SN Palmer, FN Roy, SMSN Gunn, EW2 Owens, and SN Wibberly, were posthumously promoted to their next rank, but had not been frocked. ET1 Richard Costelow was frocked. Although recognized in most media and newspaper reports as "Electronics Technician First Class", Costelow was not just eligible for Chief Petty Officer and advanced posthumously as were his fallen shipmates, but had met all of the requirements of time-in-service, qualifications, and the advancement exam to be frocked to Chief Petty Officer. He also participated in the Chief Petty Officer Initiation, which many (if not all) Chiefs will tell you is a major accomplishment in itself.

You might be thinking, "Ok, why is this so significant?" It is significant, because Richard Costelow died in the Chief's Mess where only Chiefs can be, and was the only Chief killed in the attack. 8 others were injured, but Richard Costelow met his fate while wearing the uniform and being in the space of a Chief Petty Officer.

So please remember that it was Chief Costelow who died with his 16 shipmates.

Photo of Chief Costelow (ie the white guy) as he receives his CPO Creed from one of his shipmates, September, 2000

Craig, you make me laugh! Thanks
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

This is directed to all veteran moms and Craig.  My son's expected graduation date for CTR is July 29th   He called today very frustrated with the session he is on right now.  He is saying most of the class is struggling with whatever they are learning right now    He says he's never felt so dumb before.  I gave him all the words of wisdom I could come up with but it sounds like this is the time when each class has a issue   He's not at the top of his class but top third.

Any words of wisdoms from you veterans?

  • NavyMom4J

My son has too expressed a frustration in his class also - more that he can't  grasp it quick enough..but says he is passing tests so far, but maybe memorization with whatever it is. I too wish for words of wisdom.
  • sunshine73

My son also stayed stressed most of the time he has been in A school. He said a lot of things don't really make sense. He said that the other CTRs he knows at Corry told him that everything will click towards the end so that is what kept him going. He started out making 80s and the last three tests he has made in the 90s. he has 4 weeks left. I only know of one other CTR that isn't stressed at all about it. She is the top of her class;)  My son is constantly studying and stressing so I understand.
  • glassdog

My son doesn't seem as stressed now as when he was doing the multiple choice tests.  However, he said when the test gets closer he may stress.  He is just focusing on each day.  Part of it seems to get easier, but other parts are still giving him fits.  Hopefully it comes together for all of them.  He also said that they may be finding out where they will be stationed next week.  Only words of wisdom I can come up with is to "Keep plugging away." and "Git 'er done!"
  • Craig

Angie - I've got a feeling I know where's he is at in his school training.  I'm just guessing, but I bet he is in the frequency spectrum area.  This is were most sailors mess up because it is such a hard concept to understand.  The sailors always have the same troubles in this area.

Being a CTM, I had  to learn this crap (frequency spectrums) years ago for my rating.  However, in my era we were drinking and sexual perverted sailors.  We had sayings to remember various extremely hard rating things such as frequency spectrums.  Todays Navy doesn't teach this stuff anymore because they are afraid someone will yell "sexual harassment".

With that said, I'm going to post this since you guys already know I'm a drunken, perverted sailor.  Well, actually, I don't drink.... Below is one of the more tame PDF files, which happens to be on Frequency Spectrums.  I made this for the sailors on my website that have to know this stuff.  This one saying will save them 2 weeks of hard work.  Let me know if this is the area he's having trouble in.  I have many others for all types of Navy stuff.

Heck, I'm kind of laughing because you women will know more about Frequency Spectrum's than your sailors at this moment....~ha

Thanks Craig!  I sent it to my sailor.
  • navymom3

Even though mine is still in att class I sent it to him also. Thanks for all the help.
