Thanks Betsy for the offer of cooking my sailor a meal LOL   Actually you are the second mom to offer the same   Another mom also lives in Columbia  Her sailor PIR'd with my son and is in his CTR class   He's going to Hawaii.  If I keep gathering mom's who offer to cook for my sailor, he may never have to eat the mess hall :)
  • G'sproudmom

I am so excited, my son is finishing up C school this week and he already received his orders....Hawaii!!!!!!!  I told him I'm already looking at airfare and planing a trip. I wasn't able to make out to Pensacola but I sure will make it to Hawaii.
  • navymom3

Congrats G'smom, From where you live I would try Hawaiian airlines. They have pretty good deals. That is what we used to fly all the time when we lived there. They also include your meal on your flight for free. And the flight attendants are real nice. They also have a club you can join to get special offers via email.
  • NavyMom4J

Just happy to share my CTT is coming home for a brief visit over the 4th! So excited!!!
  • Wendi, CTR mom

navymom3-I did get my tickets through Hawaiian airlines. Advise...check back daily as the prices change often.

There is also an Oahu group that seems pretty tight. They have good advise on places to visit. I am making my list.

Betsy, I hope your son ends up in Hawaii. We will have been on this whole journey together.

There were 8 Navy students in my daughters class and 5 went to Hawaii and the others went to Ft Meade.

  • glassdog

My son got his written orders the other day and has gotten the packet for getting his car to Hawaii.  We will need to take it to San Diego from Colorado.  He will get to come home for at least a few days which will be good as we need to find out just what he wants moved to Hawaii.  I will be glad he is stationed there for about 3 years as trying to get his stuff to him has been a hassle and it will be nice not to have to mess with that for a bit.  Right now he is getting ready to mail everything home that we sent him to get him through A school! Then we can get it packed for the trip to Hawaii!  lol!  Exciting times for us all!
  • NavyMom4J

Quick question to throw out to you who have more experience: Since my son is coming home soon, i thought it would be easier to just put his civilian clothes in a suitcase to bring back with him instead of mailing them to him. Can they carry suitcases on base?
  • NavyMom4J

Great thanks for the advice!!  Or maybe have him bring his home to carry a few more things back with him that way. I would not think he needs a lot.

  • NavyMom4J

    Dee that is awesome! congratulations!!!
  • navymom3

Dee- Congrats and are you going to be there on the 4th? If so make sure you guys are somewhere that has a breeze if anyone has breathing problems. The fireworks they put off is huge and the smoke gets real bad in places. Be prepared to be awake until midnight. The ones that go in the air can be purchased with a permit so everyone has them. The permit is 20 bucks. Also Turtle bay has a real nice fireworks display they put on for free. With music and concessions. Also one at Aloha tower in Honolulu. There are others also.
  • navymom3

Dee- there is usually one at the base right there by Aloha stadium. If they live up the hill some and can see the water you should be able to see the one in Honolulu also. The turtle bay one is on the other side of the island. Don't forget to check out the swap meet at Aloha stadium every wed, sat and sun. It's great for souveniors. And it will give ya a good walk as it goes all the way around the stadium.
  • navymom3

Dee- If you go to www.hawaiinewsnow.com they should have a full list of everything going on.
  • glassdog

Dee, congratulations to you and your sailors!
  • CTmomof3

Craig, what's a Staff SEA billet? My son just re-enlisted and this is what he chose it's in Okinawa. But he said he won't deploy much.  Kinda confused on this.
  • Craig

CTmom - Sorry about not getting back sooner.  I had a hacker get into my website and I been playing "Damage Control".

Anyways., Staff sea duty means your part of the Admirals Staff.  However, in Japan (COMSEVENTHFLT) it's out of Yokosuka, not Okinawa.  It's aboard the USS BlueRidge.  Staff duty is awesome.  I had it out of Gaeta Italy (COMSIXTHFLT).  When your staff, your not part of ship's company so you don't have to do the crappy things.

  • CTmomof3

Not that I doubt you Craig, but why would he say Okinawa if it's yokosuka? Secondly isn't the George Washington there too. Is there a possibility could be on  that ship?  Everyone I Know that's had kids stationed there hated it. Any opionion?

One good thing with this is that both my boys will be at  Corry the same time. One for C school the other A. Well, this could be good and bad..ya know.

  • Craig

CTmom - You got me on that one.  We use to have a CT base in Okinawa called NSGA Hanza, however, it closed in 1998.  I don't beleive they ever replaced it.

Okinawa totally sucks.  It is not really Japan.  The Japanese don't even consider it Japan.  Our ships use to pull in at "White Beach", and let me tell you there was nothing there.  He doesn't happen to be going to an aircrew would he?  The only thing I'm thinking is if he goes to a Joint facility at Kadena AFB.  That would be the only thing I could think of.

  • Craig

Well, I will be off this site for about 12 days. I will be traveling to the Czech Republic and to Auschwitz (now called Oświęcim) Poland. I will have my laptop, but I highly doubt I will be logging in.

I thought this would be a cool place to visit too, so I will be going there too...

    Have a great trip Craig!

  • navymom3

I have a question for anyone that knows. My son will be finishing his ATT class friday then moving over to Corry. He said he goes back to phase 2 until he gets the watch quals done again then will be back to phase 3. Has that been what you guys have experienced. Also is the out of bounds mileage the same at both bases? Or can they go further from Corry? We are in Jacksonville and he wants to come home for july 4th but not sure if he can get an out of bounds chit in such short time. He said he can't put it in until he gets over to Corry.
  • glassdog

Craig have fun and enjoy the history!
  • NavyMom4J

Navymom3- my son is at Corry and the mileage is 250 I think that they have to stay within.  He put in a request to come home for July 4th weekend- was approved, got his ticket, but now may not be able to - and I don't know why yet.   Hopefully it will still work out for him. He had to be a phase 3 though before he was able to ask for an out of bounds chit...which they gave him through an early request. i am not sure why he said he might not beable to come home- so am praying it all works out ok for him to still come home expecially since he already got his airline ticket and they are not cheap.

good luck with your sailor getting home.

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

What an exciting trip Craig!!  Have fun and can't wait to hear all about it
  • navymom3

My son just finished his ATT class today with 100% on his last test. Now he just has to move over to Corry and get classed up for his CTM class. Thought he was going today but when he went to start his check out they don't have them leaving NAS until monday. He had everything packed and in a friends car and ready to go. Now he has to unpack some clothes for the weekend. Oh well guess they will be ready on monday. Him and his roommate are in the same classes.
  • mumziepooh

Having a blast in Pensacola-waiting for our son for dinner. His orders came in-Whidbey Island in Washington. DIRSUP. He is pretty excited!
  • navymom3

Congrats Mumzie, My oldest son was there for 3 years. Lots to do and close to the snow if he ski's. But it does rain a lot. But that is why it is so green. beautiful area.
  • Craig

hey all, I'm at the Prague airport waiting for my flight to Krakow. It's in another hour. For a former communist country, this airport is nicer that JFK.  It looks really nice.   So, then the fun begins. I'm not actually tired at all, but I know I will be once I hit the hotel. Tomorrow night we will be staying in Auschwitz.  Man, that just doesn't sound right does it?  I just can't wait to see that place.  I've been to Dachau concentration camp near Munich, but this place is like 1000x worse.  I know the little kids shoes will just get to me.  But it's history that we shall never forget or forgive....
  • Craig

What sucks, is I can't even get into my own websites from here.  I blocked all foreign eastern blocked countries, and Czech Republic and Poland are in that group...  That totally sucks....
  • navymom3

Is anyone's sailor coming to jacksonviile or nearJacksonville from Pcola this week? My son needs a ride if anyone is already coming this way. He can help with gas also. Thanks

So proud of all the things my son is learning in the NAVY.  Ladies and Craig if you need a laugh just watch this video   That's my baby far left with limited watermelon drumming control LOL

  • Bridget (Forrest's Mom)

Hello all. This is my first time on here. My son just shipped out yesterday for boot camp, then he'll be heading to Pensacola for the CTN program. I'm very excited for him. I can't wait to go to graduation.
  • Bridget (Forrest's Mom)

    Thank you here4kids.

  • Furmangirl

My son is getting ready to start his ATT class before going to Corry. He is CTM and has a budyy who is CTR. Their PIR was 6/17 and CTR went straight to Corry while my son stayed at Pensacola. Can anyone unravel the mystery about one going and one staying? I though all sailors had to take the ATT class. I am so new to this that I still have lots of questions. Thanks so much.!
  • navymom3

Furmangirl- My son is CTM and so is his buddy. CTM has to take the ATT class but the CTR does not. Mine just finished his ATT class last friday and moved to Corry on monday. He is liking it so far here at Corry.
  • Craig

Furmangirl - We love question being ask in the group. Just fire away when you have them...
Per the sailors who go to NAS (NATTC) Pensacola, they are the CTM's and the CTT (6yo). All the others go straight to Corry (CTR, CTT-4yo, and CTN). These guys don't need basic electronics, but the CTM's and CTT-6yo do.

Angie - That water mellon look so good. I'm not sure why he's beating his "mellon", but whatever trips your trigger...~ha...

here4kids - Alot the CTN's go to either Medina, Pensacola, Ft Meade, Kunia, Ft Gordan. Your sailor can pull up all the billets (jobs) available for the next year by using his CAC card reader. I know one of you newbies is going to ask want a CAC is, It's a item in the pants... j/k.... I had to throw some humor in this thread... So I don't have to repost it again, go to this link and you will see what it is... http://www.navyformoms.com/group/pir07012011/forum/topics/graduatio...

Bridget - Good to see your son is going in as a CTN. You really need to join clockard's CTN group, it's a real cool group too... Wait, all CT's are cool, but nerds... So we are cool nerds....
I real partial to CTN's since my son is one, but my nephew is now in CTT "C" school, so I'm partial to that too, then I happen to be a retired CTM, so I'm really partial to that....
I guess I have only one thing to say about all the CT's in our community..

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Here4kids. Internet is tricky at Corry. Some rooms pick up a hotspot and some don't. There are companies that will do a month to month deal in the rooms for a reasonable price but the problem is they can be moved to different rooms for different reasons at any given time. Just when my sailor got his Internet/cable hooked up in his room he was moved. I believe he has had at least 5 different rooms in the past year for one reason or another. She will have to do the research when she gets settled.
  • Karen1913 (Ship 10, Div 336)

My son is a CTR currently at Cory attending A school.  Do all CTR's then go on to C school?  I've heard that some do not and I'm confused about this.  Anyone can help?
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

@Karen   My son will graduate from A School July 29th and he said no one in his class got a C school although they were eligible   ...just depends upon the needs of the NAVY at that time
  • sunshine73

Angie~Thanks for posting the melon video. It was great! Kinda made me crave watermelon.lol
  • Craig

clockard - I'm actually at my hotel in Prague.  I get back to the states on 6 July.  Luckily I have access to the internet here.  I'm actually quite surprised since Czech Republic is an old communist country that will celebrate it's end to Russian rule 20 year ago today (July 1st).   The American restaurants are having a BIG celebration on July 4th to celebrate it along with 4th of July.  So Hooter's Prague is where I'll be at.  Heck I'd be at Hooters anyways, but now I have a good reason...

I agree with sunshine, after Hooters, I'll crave watermelon too!

Karen - Normally CTR's don't go to "C" school out of "A" school.  They send them to shore duty (or maybe the fleet) 1st.  But they are slowly letting the "A" schoolers attend more and more "C" schools.

  • sunshine73

I'm impressed that you are out of the country and on this site. I just went to Philly for a Technology Conference and couldn't get online with our computers. Hows that for irony?
  • boilermom

My son ships out to BC on 7/7.  He will then go to Pensacola for A school as a CTR.  He told me that if he went to C school it would make his enlistment longer.  Is this true?
  • Craig

boiler - Yep, the schools almost always extend the contracts...

Well as most of you know, I am now in Prague Czech Republic...   I just left Auschwitz.  All I can say is wow!

I've learned alot this past week.  I thought I knew a lot about Germany and its concentration camp, but have come to realize that I don't know crap.  I never knew they only tattooed people in Auschwitz, no other camp did it. The only reason they did was it was taking too long to photograph them.  The tattoo just made it quicker.  Near the end, they were getting too far behind again, and didn't even tattoo people, they just sent them straight to the gas chamber.   I never knew Auschwitz was just a mini concentration camp, it was really small.  It only had 1 gas chamber.  Birkenau which was 1000x worse than Auschwitz is about 3 miles from Auschwitz had four gas chambers.  Birkenau ran continuously, each of the four chambers killing 1500 people at a time.  Auschwitz was nothing compared to Birkenau.  I was originally going to post some of the pictures I took, but decided not to. You've all heard the story, but you really haven't.  Once you realize that the American version limited what the public could view in the 1940's (since they didn't want to offend the American people), they cut alot of the film out.  I actually saw the uncut raw French version.  Even though it was in French, the film showed it all.  Nothing was cut. They warn this at the entrance. Thank God, today our soceity can handle this stuff, and to me it's history that needs to reminded.  Yes, it's not for everyone, but to a history guy like me, it means a heck of alot...

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"

    ~Santayana

However, I will post these pictures.  It is in front of Oskar Schindler (from the movie Schindler's list) that I took in Krakow Poland, when you see the factory it is really small.  To think this guy saved 1100 to 1200 people (no one knows for sure), it's incredible.. What sucks if the Polish government wanted this to be a place that welcomed visitors.  They screwed it up by texturing the walls and painting it.  I wished they would have left it as it was during the 1940's, which all the building around it are.  I would have been alot better to me.

Hello everyone, Do any of you know anything about commemorative coins? or a coin that I could get my sailor for A school graduation? Are the coins only given as a reward? or is it appropriate to give them as gifts? I read somewhere about giving them one for PIR, and I saw some in the NEX. Help.
  • Craig

sunshine - You are talking about a rating coin.  Yes, they are a really cool gift to give.  You may want to look at this post which I wrote about them, it will show you what a rating coin is and where to buy them.

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/pir07012011/forum/topics/graduatio...

  • sunshine73

Thank you so much! I just ordered it. Way back when I was first reading about them, I thought that he would never care about getting a coin. Now that he has matured and is very proud of his rate, I know that getting one of these is a must!
  • mumziepooh

sunshine - I got one for my son for his PIR - I used the link Craig gave me.  He loved it.  We went to a coin shop and got a cool case for it - free since the man that owned the shop is a sucker for the military!  He has gotten a couple more and loves them all!  I got one that has the Navy Motto on it.  One with his rate is a great idea for graduation.
  • sunshine73

He is super excited about being a CT. He got his patch and belt buckle today. I told him that you found me and he went on about how nice you were :)
  • Pamela

Hi there, I'm new this group and am looking for some information.  My son made it to phase 3 and I want to go and visit him next weekend.  Does anyone know of a hotel/motel close by Corry Station?  He got there on June 11 and got phased up very quickly.  We are very happy about that.

So far, he is quite happy.  Just waiting to class up.  He is so hoping it will be next week.  Very interesting info on the C School.  We thought once he finished A-school that he would be able to move right on to C School.  Is it true that they have to stay at the top of the class to be able to do C School?

Another question he/we are unclear about.  Is A-school for CTR's self paced?  Are there any classes with teachers?  If self paced, can you finish earlier than the 16 weeks?  I know I'm throwing a lot of questions out there, but I do appreciate any answers I get.

My other son is in Goose Creek, SC (Nuke program).  Very intense, but he's very happy there.

  • navymom3

Pamela- I was just there the other day and try Ashton Inn and suites Warrington they had a sign that said 49.95 a night special. We stayed at quality inn. It was okay but rooms do need some work. They are both right outside the gate. The quality inn does have a pool and I did not see one at the other one. There is a super 8 right next to the Quality inn but didn't take a look at it. Looked older than the Quality Inn.
