Pamela- I was just on there site and may need to call for the low rate. As it is coming up 95 a night. I also says they should have an indoor pool.
  • sunshine73

Hi ladies, we have been twice. We stayed at the Best Western Blue Angel once and it was very clean with a free hot breakfast. They have a military rate too. It is about 10 minutes up the road. We also stayed at a condo in Perdido Key the 1st visit and we are going back to the same condo for our visit next week. I went on vrbo.com and found some really great deals. Many of the condos and houses were the same price as the hotels. The Pensacola Beach Hotels are expensive!!! You are gonna love Pensacola.
  • sunshine73

I just had CTR Lastname and the graduation date. On the website, you are limited to 12 characters on each of the 2 lines. I had the same blank moment ;)

  • mumziepooh

Pamela - There are a couple reqs for C school for the CTR - they do have academic requirements but most importantly, it depends on the needs of the Navy.  A school teaches them the foundations of the job and, for some duty stations, that is the most that is needed.  Others will need more specialized training.  It isn't a reflection on the sailor if they don't get a C school right away.  One of my son's friends was the Honor grad (number 1) and didn't get a C school - he is going to a brand new ship that is yet to be commissioned so I guess they don't know what they will need.  My son is number 1 right now and has verbals but not sure if he will get C school.

We stayed on Pensacola Beach when we went and it was expensive.  There was a Holiday Inn Express that was close but I don't know what it was like.  I would go with something somebody had actually used and could give you a reference.

A-school is not self paced.  And it is..... They have instructors and are supposed to be at a certain place at a certain time but they do a lot of self-teaching on computers.  It will last until the graduation date that your son will get.

Oh - WELCOME, btw!  Your son DID phase up quickly!  That is great for him!

  • sunshine73

I have a question: Does anyone know what the R stands for in CTR? No one seems to know the answer.lol
  • Craig

sunshine - Look above in the discussion area for "CT info - Everything you wanted to know about a CT, but were afraid to ask..."

However, if you're lazy, it stands for "Collection"....

CTR's do the COMINT = Communication Intelligence

CTT's do the ELINT = Electronic Intelligence.

If you want a little more info, then go to my website at:

  • Pamela

Thanks everyone!  Very helpful.  I'm probably going to stay at the Ashton.  Well, I'm also hoping that my son does get to go to C school, but guess will just have to wait and see on that one.

Also, glad to know about the A-school itself.  Self paced or not.  Reason I asked about being able to graduate early, is because another mom on here a while back, said that her son started school in early Dec. and finished up in mid Feb.  Just wondering why that would of happened.

  • Pamela

Okay, another question.  When I go to visit, can I get on the actual base, ie Corry and NAS?  I know I won't be able to go to his room.  But, just wondering if he can show me around the base.  Thanks!
  • navymom3

Pam you can get on NAS without him to go to the museum or to pick a sailor up. But for Corry you have to be with him to get on base. The barracks are pretty close to the gate so he can walk off get in the car and you guys can drive on. Just have to show both your id's.
  • navymom3

Craig I have a question. I know I have seen it on here but can't find it. My son is CTM and has the option to add another year and it will make him E3. Is it worth doing now or will it mess up a sign on bonus when his 4 years are up? He is signed up for 4 active then 4 reserve.
  • Craig

I have never thought about this before, but why do you need someone to sign you in at Corry?  The reason I ask is I know some people that have no one stationed there, but they are allowed to visit the Cryptologic Museum.  So, I bet all you'd have to do is go to the gate and tell them you are here to visit the Museum.  It won't work at night time, but I bet during the day it would.

The Cryptologic Museum everyone should go to.  It will allow you to see how the building is built (since 512/514/513/511) are built the same way.  It has some cool, now unclassified pictures, of the CT spaces on the USS Pueblo (the only still commissioned U.S. Navy ship still held in captive by a hostile country).

  • Craig

navymom - It's not worth it.  To extend for 1 year to only make E3 or E4 is crazy.  From E2 to E3 the wait time 9 months, from E3 to E4 is 6 months normally.  So he would get his rate (rank) almost as soon as someone who did sucker in for the 1 additional year.  The bonus that he will lose out on, since he now would be extended would be about $10K (I haven't looked at the new figures in a while), but it's just not worth it.   I wrote about this in detail on my website, but let me try to post it over here since to get to that area you'd need to be registered, but doesn't do you a bit of good since it's mainly a deppers and 1st years in the Navy stuff.
  • navymom3

Thanks Craig. That was a great help. Is the link to the deppers site on here as my son is a under year in the Navy and your site might be helpful for him.
  • CTmomof3

My son will be arriving at Corry tonight. I can't seem to remember from my last time around. How long do they stay in each phase and what is each phase?  All I remember is  phase 3 they can leave base.  Secondly, how long is the wait time to class up for CTR?  I've heard weeks and months.
  • Craig

navymom - I post alot more stuff on NavyDep than here,  You'd think I'd shut up by now huh ~ha. My heart is helping the newbie Navy guys out, NavyDep.com works well with the other website I have NavyFamilies.com.  NavyFamilies started about 2 years prior to N4M, but since the Navy sponsors N4M, my NavyFamilies website lost its visibility.  Kind of like a Mom & Pop store being overrun by Walmart.   I have actually locked NavyFamilies down this month for newbies, since I'm upgrading the software. But some of the thread are visible.

However, your son is more than welcome to join the NavyDep.com site.  Have him go to this link.  I talk about the Accelerated Advancement Program (AAP) program.

    http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1348

I have another post out there on the web, but I'm not sure where.  I write for alot of military websites, (Military.com, NavyDep.com, NavyFamilies.com, MyNavyOnline.com, TheNavyCafe.com, NavyDads.com) I just don't know where it's at.  If I had access to my desktop CPU, then I could find it.

  • NavyMom4J

Hi CTmom- My CTT is home for the 4th- and he told me that they have now done away with phases... Usually takes 30 days for each phase- but they just recently did away with the phases.

He heads back to Corry tomorrow-

  • Craig

My nephew, who is also a CTT, is home for the 4th too.  I won't get to see him since we get home on the 6th.  To bad, I wanted to talk to him about Navy stuff....

Denver should be fun with two sailors in it...~ha

  • Pamela

Thanks Navymom3!  Great info!!  Looking so forward to seeing my son!  Going to the museum.  Should be a good time.
  • Craig

I know alot of the CT's are assigned to Navy P3 Orion aircraft...  Well I wanted to post this because between the Navy P3's, the Air Force A-10's, and the USS Barry (DDG-52) they are playing hell on Libya.

Here's the post that I recently got:

A U.S. Navy P-3C Maritime Patrol aircraft, a U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft and guided-missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG-52) engaged Libyan Coast Guard vessel Vittoria and two smaller crafts after confirmed reports that Vittoria and accompanying craft were firing indiscriminately at merchant vessels in the port of Misrata, Libya.

The P-3C fired at Vittoria with AGM-65F Maverick missiles after multiple explosions were observed in the vicinity of the port rendering the 12-meter patrol vessel ineffective and forcing it to be beached.

Two small crafts were fired upon by an A-10 using its 30mm GAU-8/ Avenger gatling cannon, destroying one and forcing the other to be abandoned.

Barry provided situational awareness for the aircraft by managing the airspace and maintaining the maritime picture.

Now the rest of the story....(if you were Navy guys, this would give you a woody ~ha)

Since we know about the CT on the P-3's, lets talk about the USAF A-10 that play tag-team along with them (the P3's)...This is great!

    First there was this gun...

It was developed by General Electric, the "We bring good things to life" people.

It's one of the modern-day Gatling guns.

    It shoots very big bullets...

    It shoots them very quickly...

Someone said, "Let's put it in an airplane."

Someone else said, "Better still, let's build an airplane around it."

So they did. And "they" were the Fairchild-Republic airplane people...

And they had done such a good job with an airplane they developed back in WWII .....called the P-47 Thunderbolt!

They decided to call it the A10 Thunderbolt.

They made it so it was very good at flying low and slow and shooting things with that fabulous gun.

But since it did fly low and slow, they made it bulletproof, or almost so.

A lot of bad guys have found you can shoot an A10 with anything from a pistol to a 23mm Soviet cannon and it just keeps on flying and shooting.

When they got through, it looked like this...

It's not sleek and sexy like an F18 or the stealthy Raptors and such, but I think it's such a great airplane because it does what it does better than any other plane in the world.

    It kills tanks...

Not only tanks, as Sadam Hussein's boys found out to their horror, but armored personnel carriers, radar stations, locomotives, bunkers, fuel depots... just about anything

the bad guys thought was bulletproof turned out to be easy pickings for this beast.

See those engines? One of them alone will fly this plane.

The pilot sits in a very thick titanium alloy "bathtub."

    That's typical of the design...

They were smart enough to make every part the same whether mounted on the left side or right side of the plane, like landing gear, for instance.

Because the engines are mounted so high (away from ground debris) and the landing gear uses such low pressure tires, it can operate from a damaged airport, interstate highway, plowed field, or dirt road.

    Everything is redundant.

They have two of almost everything.

Sometimes they have three of something.

Like flight controls, there's triple redundancy of those,

and even if there is a total failure of the double hydraulic system,

there is a set of manual flying controls.

Capt. Kim Campbell (yes, Kim is a female) sustained this damage over Bagdad. After sustaining the hit, she said the aircraft immediately became uncontrollable and she noticed several caution warnings -- all over a very hostile territory.

"I lost all hydraulics instantaneously, so I completely lost control of the jet. It rolled left and pointed toward the ground, which was an uncomfortable feeling over Baghdad," she said. "The entire caution panel lit up and the jet wasn't responding to any of my control inputs."

Captain Campbell tried several different procedures to get the aircraft under control, none of which worked, she said. At that point, she decided to put the plane into manual reversion, which meant she was flying the aircraft without hydraulics. After that, the aircraft immediately began responding.

"The jet started climbing away from the ground, which was a good feeling because there is no way I wanted to eject over Baghdad," she said.

Because the aircraft sustained hits to the rear of the aircraft, including the horizontal stabilizer, tail section and engine cowling, Captain Campbell said she could not see the damage. Her flight leader, Lt. Col. Richard Turner, positioned his aircraft where he could view the damage.

"The jet was flying pretty good and the damage had not affected the flight control surfaces or the (landing) gear," Colonel Turner said. "If (Kim) could keep it flying, we would get out of Baghdad and might be able to make it (back to base).

So she flew for another hour before returning to base.

    But, back to that gun...

It's so hard to grasp just how powerful it is.

This is the closest I could find to showing you just what this cartridge is all about.

What the guy is holding is NOT the 30mm round, but a"little" .50 Browning machine gunround and the 20mm cannon round which has been around for a long time.

    The 30mm is MUCH bigger.

Down at the bottom are the .50 BMG and 20x102 Vulcan the fellow was holding.

At the bottom right is the bad boy we're discussing.

Let's get some perspective here: The .223 Rem (M16 rifle round) is fast.

It shoots a 55 or so grain bullet at about 3300 feet/sec, give or take.

It's the fastest of all those rounds shown (except one).

When you move up to the ..30 caliber rounds, the bullets jump up in weight to 160-200 grains. Speeds run from about 2600 to 3000 fps or so.

The .338 Lapua is the king of the sniper rifles these days and shoots a 350 grain bullet at 2800 fps or so.

They kill bad guys at over a mile with that one.

The .50 BMG is really big. Mike Beasley has one on his desk.

Everyone who picks it up thinks it's some sort of fake, unless they know big ammo.

It's really huge with a bullet that weighs 750 grains and goes as fast the Lapua.

I don't have data on the Vulcan, but hang on to your hat.

The bullet for the 30x173 Avenger has an aluminum jacket around a spent uranium core and weighs 6560 grains (yes, over 100 times as heavy as the M16 bullet, and flies through the air at 3500 fps (which is faster than the M16 as well).

The gun shoots at a rate of 4200 rounds per minute, Yes, four thousand.

Pilots typically shoot either one- or two-second burst which set loose 70 to 150 rounds.

The system is optimized for shooting at 4,000 feet.

    OK, the best for last.

You've got a pretty good idea of how big that cartridge is, but I'll bet you're like me and you don't fully appreciate how big the GAGAU-8 Avenger really is.

    Take a look ...

Each of those seven barrels is 112" long.

    That's almost ten feet.

The entire gun is 19-1/2 feet long.

Think how impressive it would look set up in your living room.

Oh, by the way, it doesn't eject the empty shells but runs them back into the storage drum. There's just so dang many flying out, they felt it might damage the aircraft.

Oh yeah, I forgot, they can hang those bomb and rocket things on ‘em too,

    just in case.

After all, it is an “airplane”!

Like I said, this is a beautiful design.

    I'm glad it's ours...

  • mumziepooh

My son hopped in the car and we went on a tour of Corry - no problem.  Also shopped at the NEX but remember that the sailor has to pay for the purchases.

That is news about the phases - they still had them a couple of weeks ago.  But things do change - thank goodness!  I can see the need for some gradual phasing from boot but my son was weeks...it was oppressive!

He is a CTR and was classed up in 3 weeks time.

  • Craig

Where you staying at Dee?  Hale Koa hotel?
  • CTmomof3

What did they change the phases to? Anyone on here who's son was in Div 194? My son got there last night, no one was in his room but said one person (there are a total of 3 did think they did that) came from div 194.
  • sunshine73

Congrats again Dee!  Wow Craig, those photos were amazing. New question: Can anyone tell me if there are limits to the number of visitors at A school graduation? My sailors grandparents are coming down with us. will all 6 of us be allowed to watch? How formal/casual is it? I know Craig had some info a few mos back and I am searching for it now. Thanks!
  • Craig

    Hey all,

Well tomorrow we head back to the States...  Our final day in Prague was doing something that I truly have never done before, writing Graffiti on walls...  I am one that cannot stand when people destroy our cities with graffiti, but, I had to make an exception today.

Today we when to John Lennon's wall in Prague.  It is just filled with people writing on the wall.  It all started because the Czech people absolutely hate the Communist way of life they had to deal with. To tick off the communist, they wrote graffiti on this wall to show that they didn't care about the communist and was their way of peaceful demonstration.  The communist would paint the wall everyday, and the people would come and write on it...

It's actually meant alot to me, since I'm totally against the way the communist destroyed things throughout our world.  Thus, why I added my own graffiti  to the wall...

Here is more of the story about the wall:

    http://www.prague.net/john-lennon-wall

  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Craig, thanks for the photos and info on both the P3's and the graffiti on John Lennon's wall.  Hope you had a wonderful 25th anniversary and a super vacation.
  • Pamela

My son called me yesterday morning all excited.  He classed up!  He got there on June 11th so only took 3 1/2 weeks.  He's so happy to get started with his CTR classes.  We are going to visit him this weekend.  So, now that he is classed up he will get to spend the whole weekend with us.  Can't wait!  Anxious to go to the museum.  We are staying at the Ashton Inn.  Hopefully it will be nice.  The one at the Corry entrance had horrible reviews on tripadvisor.  So, we opted for the other one.

  • navymom3

Pamela- congrats on your son classing up. Let us know how the Ashton is. It looks nice from the outside. The one outside of Corry gates looks nice also. To bad  about the reviews you saw. Have a great time. My son starts CTM class friday.
  • Pamela

Navymom3, thanks!  Yes, even my son said the one outside Corry looks nice on the outside.  I guess, looks are deceiving! People talked about how dirty it was and having getting bitten by bugs while sleeping!!  Yuck.  I guess that's why it was only $60 night versus $100.  I'd much rather pay the extra money and be more comfortable and not worry about cleanliness.

I will let you know how it is.  Glad your son gets to get his classes started as well.  Can't wait to talk to mine tonight to find out how his first 2 days went.

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

Craig,My hubby and I share the same anniversary as you and your wife. We celebrated our 26th on July 5th! Congrats! I really enjoyed hearing about the trip.
  • sunshine73

Happy Anniversary, Craig!  My sailor is taking his final A school test today!

    Thanks Patricia for the information!

  • mumziepooh

I have a moving to Washington question.....son has his truck in Pensacola.  We live in Houston - like 500 miles away.  He graduates on August 5.  He took 15 days leave to come home - was given 2 days travel on the front and 10 days to Whidbey Island in WA.  27 days.  Here is my question - how much of that is leave?  Is it really 27 days or does it encroach on his leave?  I wonder if he should fly up and ship his car....
  • mumziepooh

Sunshine - praying for the son!  He can do it!!!!!!  Are you in Pensacola?

  • navymom3

My son says that on his orders it should say a must arrive date. If that arrive date is 12 days out then the leave is seperate. He will need to look at that must arrive by date. It also sounds like they are paying him to drive to Washington. With that he must show his gas receipts once he gets there to be reimbursed. They will be allowed so much each day for food and hotel. So if he spends less than the allowed amount he will make money. They will also only front him part of the money for the move. Then after he gets there and turns on the receipts he will get the rest. My son moved from Whidbey to Jacksonville in Feb.
  • sunshine73

Hi Mumzie! We are in Pensacola. He is completely finished with A school now! Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes. He has a class dinner and graduation practice today, so we won't see him until later. Hope we get a chance to meet your sailor while we are here. I'm assuming that he likes seafood, since you guys went to crabs. We brought fresh shrimp and flounder from home and are gonna fry it up tomorrow night or Saturday night. Hopefully he can come over. We would love to meet him.
  • mumziepooh

Congratulations, Sunshine!  Have a great time in Florida - proud of your boy!  Hope my son is on his best behavior.....never can be too sure!  He loves ALL food - he is an eating machine!
  • Craig

mumzie - He will get a Per Diem Allowance for moving to his new duty station. This will cover all costs associated with meals and lodging when you travel to your new duty station. Per Diem is available for both CONUS and OCONUS moves.  Per diem rates for car travel are based on a flat rate. The military uses 350 miles per day as the standard one-day travel distance to compute per diem rates. To determine the number of days per diem, take the Official Government Mileage between duty stations and divide by 350. An additional day of travel is allowed if the remainder is 51 miles or more. Travel time is calculated at 350 miles per day.  So from Pensacola (32505) to Whidbey Island (Oak Harbor, WA 98277) is 2861 miles.  So he would get 2861 / 350 = 8.17 days.  Since 350 x 8 = 2800 miles, and since 2861 - 2800 = 61 miles, he will get one extra day since it's over 51 miles.

The additional cost to go to Houston is on his own nickel.  He only gets the money to go to Whidbey, no more.

One thing that most sailor screw up on is, let say him and his friend want to get to Whidbey quicker and they decided to drive day and night nonstop and check into the base.  It would average 59.60 mph (2861 / 48 hours = 59.60 mph), well guess what?  The Navy will only pay them for 2 days since that is all it took.  They lose out on the extra 7 days (9 days - 2 days) that they could have collected per diem on.  I've seen it happen.  So take all the Navy allows you.

I'm not sure why they are giving him 2 days on the front end.  That doesn't make sense.  Secondly, are you sure they are giving 10 days travel?  I calculated 2861 miles, which = 9 days.  The 9 days doesn't count as leave, it's considered travel time.

  • Craig

momoffour - My actually 25th anniversary was on June 29th.  The date on that graffiti was the date we wrote it.  I totally understand now how it looks like that was our date, but I was too "busy" on June 29th to go to Lennon's wall, so we did it then (and we did "it" on the 29th ~ha)....  I bet I've got all of you guys confused now....

     I bet you're all thinking:

  • Craig

sunshine - It's great he is done with "A" school....  Man he will love Hawaii when he gets there.  They say they are sending people to the new building at Waihiwa, so some of the sailors are still staying at Kunia, and some are moving.  Either place is great duty.

Pamela - The Navy Lodge at NAS is a great place to stay.  You know when the military is involved, they keep the place clean.  You're right on the beach.

  • sunshine73

Look at that smile on your son's face! Love it.
  • Craig

Great pic Dee.... Now they know the language of "love"...~ha....
  • sunshine73

Thanks Craig! I'll post a picture as soon as I can.
  • CTmomof3

How many weeks is A school for CTR?
  • mumziepooh

    CT Mom - 14 weeks
  • mumziepooh

Craig - thanks!  great explanation! I will have him look at his hard copy and, of course, the travel people will go over all of that with him.  I was just wanting some sort of confirmation!  He is really excited to be DIRSUP - and he isn't planning to take the extra year for the E4 promotion if he stays number 1 - he is really listening to your wisdom!
  • glassdog

Hi everyone!  We are getting ready to sell the house so I have been trying to get that ready and have been unable to really log on here lately.  Missed all of you!  We are in the final weeks of our sailor getting done at A school and have our reservations at  NAS!  Also getting things ready to get our sailors car to San Diego for it's trip to Hawaii!  Such exciting and glad times!

Craig I am glad you are back from your trip and had a great time it sounds like.  Dee congrates on the new CTI.

Now hopefully we can get the info we need to have our sailors things sent to Hawaii!  Haven't heard what is to happen with that.  Just keep on keeping on!

  • CTmomof3

Craig do you know anything about White Beach Naval base in Okinawa? That's the one my older son will be on starting Marchish.  I can't really find much info about it.
  • Craig

That is great Lady H.... Especially after reading this story...

I knew the day was coming (ie the SRB's being lowered, PRT getting harder..etc)

Sailors best be looking at cross rating to fields that are undermanned, or they might get the boot...

Navy is overmanned, some will get the boot

  • Craig

She'll love being a CT....  All the CT ratings are pretty well safe for the below message.  I totally feel sorry for those that got into a really overmanned rating like MM.  Those guys will soon get the boot.

What I find strange is they still haven't opened up the earily retirement program.  I got out on that, and it was the best thing I've ever done.  I hope they open it up again to allow more sailors the opportunity to make advancement.

  • Craig

CTmomof3 - Yea, I know White Beach really well. That beach is far from being a beach. Yes, they have a small beach, but it is really really tiny.  White Beach is mainly just a place where our ships pull into for port visits. They have these large cement "Jack" thing (like when you played jacks as a kid), that make up the pier, thousands of them. The highlight in 1991 was when they have a Burger King van pull up the peir and make food. It was probably the best food we ever ate after coming off a Indian Ocean (IO) cruise since we haven't had it in months.  For excitment, we actually went over to the base club on Kadina AFB since that was were all the women were (remember we didn't have women on war ships back then).  What was funny is all the other guys were thinking the same thing, so 1 woman per 300 guys.  Not really good odds if you are a guy.  So we all just sat around getting hammered.

Go here for the bases in Okinawa: http://www.cnic.navy.mil/Okinawa/index.htm

then click on "Installation Guide", then "Installation Map" and you will find info on White Beach.

  • CTmomof3

Thanks Craig, if it's so tiny where would they live? My DIL my be in for a huge surprise..she's thinking.."paradise" I think.
