michemom - I was at Goodfellow, but that was years ago.  I haven't heard of people going there in a long time.  However, this link may help you...

JapanMom my sons are going to Yokosuka once they leave here. I am in Post Falls and we love it here. Where are you now?
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Hello everyone, I was on here about 2 months ago, but with a cross country move and visit to see my sailor in Pensacola, I haven't had too much of a chance to keep up.  I'm hoping to be on here regularly from now on.

I do have a question though.  My son is currently in CTT classes.  It's been a challenge for them to start his security clearance process because I was living in a hotel (following the settlement on our house, I stayed in NM until my daughter graduated from college in May), then I moved back to Maryland and my husband jand I were living in a hotel for a month and then moved into an apartment at the end of June. Hopefully we will only stay here for a few months and then will search for a house again.  Ugh, I seriously can't wait until we find a house and are settled again!  My husband was living in Maryland for a year and a half before I came out here, so at least we are finally together again.  Oh well, sorry for the vent.  :)

I got a call about a month ago from a special investigator and they came to interview me about a week later.  My interview took almost an hour and a half, but most of the time he was telling me about his family too, so I guess I was easy to talk too. lol  My son has said that he only knows of 2 other people who have been interviewed so far.  How many people do they usually interview?  They have not called my husband or any of my son's 4 siblings, aunts, uncles, close teachers, etc. .  The only people that we are sure that have been interviewed have been my best friend, my sailor's best friend and me.   My son put quite a few names from NM, WV and MD, which are the places that he has lived.  How long does the entire process for security clearance usually take?  Just wondering.  He started his A school classes about 3 weeks ago.

Also, do many parents go down to Pensacola for the A school graduation?  I know that it's not anywhere near as elaborate as PIR, but I would love to share that moment with my son too.

  • Craig

Betsy - Everyone always misses this, but up in the discussion area (above) is a item call "Security Clearance Process".  Click on that, and read the entire posts and comments.  That will answer your questions.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Thank you for your answer, Craig, but I actually I didn't miss that at all.  I posted a question on the discussion on July 16 and I guess you missed that.  lol  I did read the entire thing months ago.  They started the process with my son in early April and it's already been almost 4 months.   He did say that they did an initial screening which did allow him to start his classes, so that's good, I guess.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Tomorrow is my son's graduation from A school as a CTRSN   He will arrive home a little after midnite Saturday am    We are all so very excited!  Unfortunately Ive been out of town for an emergency all week so freaking out a bit because I had this wonderful plan to clean a little bit each evening, do the prep for the BBQ on sunday etc....so now I guess I'll just have to hustle when I get home on Friday    A bunch of us are planning on meeting him at the airport  and if you remember a video I posted a while back involving watermelons...well we plan to do our own little drum circle of watermelons when he walks through the airport gates  :)
  • Craig

Betsy - So are you saying they didn't go to his school?  This is really unusual.  They always go to the schools....

Angie - You know you can go to the airport gate and watch him fly off, correct?  You should freak him out and be there...

    Accommodations For U.S. Military Personnel

    Military Family Member Gate Passes

Family members who want to accompany a military service member being deployed to the boarding gate or greet them returning from deployment at the arrival gate may receive passes to enter the secure area of the airport.

Interested military family members should contact their air carrier representative at the departure/arrival airport for proper local procedures.

Congrats Angie. You need to record that for sure! My son graduated a CTR few weeks ago with one of the other guys in that video.lol  They are in C school together. Our sons probably know each other. Craig wasn't joking about the CT community being small. Enjoy your sailor.
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Angie, that's so exciting.  Congrats to your son.  How long will you have him home?

Craig, if they went to the school, he hasn't heard yet.  He did list a few teachers that he is still in touch with also.

  • idahojeep

sunshine and angie ~ my twins graduated A school a couple weeks ago and are in C school now for CTR. There are only 8 in their class so only 6 other guys besides them. Do yours know mine?
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Angie (Dan'sMom) Congrats on your son's graduation!  About what date did you post the watermelon video?

Idahojeep - that's very cool about having twins in C school!!!  Way to raise 'em Mom!

  • sunshine73

They probably do. My son is in his 2nd week of C school but he said everyone is at different levels.  I will ask him this afternoon if he knows any twins:) Mumziepooh's son and my son are roommates. Michemom's daughter and my son were at BC together, Corry together, and will be in Hawaii together. I love that we have N4Ms to bring us all together.
  • sunshine73

craig~ when you get time will you look up at the discussion that I posted about duty stations. I know you have talked a lot about it but it seems that everyone I know is not getting reimbursed or is having to pay extreme fees to come home. Help, please.

  • idahojeep

sunshine ~ after our posts yesterday I called one of my sons and he said it is taken care of and they did not have to pay any change fees. But he had to get off the phone to go back to class so I did not get details yet.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

So had something very interesting happen this week. I posted earlier that my CTT received orders to Yokosuka last Thursday. He was told he would get there & then start the process to bring his future wife over. On Tuesday he was told that his wife would not be able to join him on his first tour at all overseas no matter if they married or not. Of course there was much sadness &much emotion. They have been together over 4 1/2 yes and the wedding has been planned since November. He was under the impression that he would be @Corry thru the end of the year but things moved much faster. Sailor spoke to a chief on Tuesday afternoon and, unbelievably to me, the Navy has pulled back his Japan orders for his 1st tour so he can complete his plans with his fiancé. He never asked not to go to Japan but just to have permission to take her. They are very happy and looking forward to see where new orders take them. He plans on making the Navy a career and they are excited about traveling in the future.
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Rorysmom - that's wonderful!  How nice that it worked out for your son.

Angie - Thanks for posting the link - I know I have seen that before (must've been here).  I love it.  Silly boys.  I hope TSA allows the watermellons thru to the gate!  Enjoy being with your son!

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

    Rorysmom...that is fantastic!!

Paula - that's why we are not meeting him outside the gate   My crazy family is so silly

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Thanks so much all. Also, congrats Janet! So happy for you and your sailor!
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Hooyah and Bravo Zulu to Ariel.  Congrats Janet R.!!!

    Thanks for letting us know.

  • navymom3

WooHoo! My sailor is now 1st in his class at A school. So very proud of him. He says he plans on keeping it that way.

Hi all :) I have a quick question...My son is graduating A school in Pensacola today(with Honors may I so proudly add) and unfortunately we can't be there to show support and hug our sailor like we did for PIR. Is there a location online that someone will be posting the video of the graduation? We are really bummed that we can't be there(long way from MI!). Thanks!
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Lidsterzoo  My son also graduated this morning  (CTR)   and we couldnt make it there either    He is my only child and this is the only thing of his Ive ever missed so needless to say Im bumming    I did ask one of the mom's who was attending to take pictures for me so I hope I get it.  Congratulations to your sailor and to you   Bravo Zulu!!
  • lidsterzoo

Thanks Angie! Did your son get his orders yet? My son is Hawaii bound but they are holding him for another class and private stuff. He is getting exactly what he wanted and is so stoked! I really hope someone out there will maybe post a video to youtube or something.  Pictures would be great also! Congrats to you and your son :)
  • NavyMom4J

My son graduates A School August 12th- he is CTT.  But no orders yet and he was not asked to fill out a dream sheet- but told he might find out where he goes this week? so maybe not all of them get a choice????
  • lidsterzoo

NavyMom4J...I think my son just happened to get picked for this. He got his orders roughly a week and a half before graduation. The orders weren't set in stone until I believe today(graduation day)..He now has them in hand.
  • NavyMom4J

lidsterzoo- I am so anxious to find out where they will send him!!

I too am really wishing i could go to his graduation. I will ask him to see if any of his sailor friends parents will be there to take pictures. OR a sailors girlfriend to post on face book .

  • lidsterzoo

Is there a facebook page for CTT, CTR, etc. moms and families? I really wish this site had a like button lol
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Lidsterzoo  my son got his orders several weeks ago   Most of his class is going to Hawaii   One is going to Texas and 3 to Ft Meade   My son is going to Ft Meade which was his first choice
  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Navymom4j...son graduated CTT C school week of July 4th but did not receive orders until last Thursday July 21. Hs class did not receive dream list either. You can see my previous post from yesterday about his orders to Japan. its been a crazy week!
  • Wendi, CTR mom

Daughter has been in Hawaii about 2 months now...I just spent  9 days wither her. I went to Kunia with her one day and watched her as she did Colors. That is all she had to do for "work" for 2 weeks, because I was going to be there. I fixed dinner a couple of nights for a bunch of her friends in their common kitchen in the barracks. They all adopted me as "Mamma Wendi"..They were so excited to have a real meal.
  • NavyMom4J

roysmom- son just told me he was asked to fill out his Dream sheet on Friday. So guess he gets to fill one out after all. His whole class he said, except three, is above 90% - HOOYAH SAILORS!!

so hopefully he will get his choice, but of course, Navy needs come first. He wants Denver - then Fort Meade- then Hawaii or San Diego. GO figure. Hawaii would be my first choice- HA HA HA -

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

NavyMom4, I hope your sailor gets the place he wants.  Fingers and toes are crossed for him.

I wonder why some sailors get to fill out the dream sheet and others don't?  My son is going to graduate in Sept. for CTT and I'm so afraid that he will be shipped out to Japan.  :(  He wants San Diego or Hawaii, so I guess, just like always in the Navy, we will have to be patient and see what happens.

Wendi, so glad to hear that you had a great visit with H.  :)  Are there any "must sees" that I should know about, because I am actually going to see my daughter In Hawaii (she lives there with her Navy bf) in Sept .  I was there 30 years ago, to see my brother (also in Navy) but I'm sure things have changed a lot since then.  lol

  • NavyMom4J

Bestymom- I don't know why some do and some don't - maybe depends on their Chief? anyway- thanks for the prayers- My CTT graduates August 12th- but then there is another class he has to take so plans to be in P'cola for a while as he will wait to class up for the class he is calling  shipboard training- He said he does not know if he has to wait awhile to class up or not.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

My CTTs shipboard procedure class started 1week after C school graduation. I hope your's starts that quick!
  • navymom3

Betsy'smom- I used to live there and yes it has changed a bunch in the last 30 years. If you want to swim in the ocean but not the open ocean you can go to Koolina resort they have 4 lagoons and it is open to the public. The Dole pineapple farm is great it's on Kamehameha Hwy on your way to the north shore. Haliewa Town is great small beach town and great for it's little shops. If you keep going On Kam hwy you will come across Sunset beach and several others. Just before you get into Kahuku you will run into the shrimp trucks. They are so good but they only take cash so be prepared. If you keep going in Laie is the Morman temple and the Polynesian Cultural Center. It is wonderful and the show at night is amazing. But they are closed on sundays. You can buy tickets online to reserve your day and spot. Then your going to pass haula where we used to live. Just before you get to Kaneohe you can stop and see the temples. It is just fun all away around the Island. I am sure your daughter has places to take you also. For souveniors go to Aloha stadium for the swap meet. Every wed sat and sun. Hope this helps.
  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Navy mom...Denver would be great but sailor was told could not go to Denver on 1st tour usually. My CTT also said he has to take 1 more 1-week class after shipboard procedure. He should be totally finished by end of Sept. Waiting for new orders since Japan was pulled back for him due to his pending marriage. They usually don't go overseas or even to Hawaii if they are married or have children. Norfolk was big in his group..
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

navymom3, thanks so much for all the info.   It's funny though, but I guess it really hasn't changed all that much, because a lot of the places that you mentioned, I have been too.  lol  My daughter lives a block from the beach in Kailua, so I'm sure we will spent a bunch of time there.  I would also love to see some sea turtles.  I will be staying in an entire different place, so I hope to get a different view of the island than 30 years ago.  The last time I was there , I stayed at the Hale Koa and it was only a couple of years old and one building.  I do know that it's now two buildings. lol

rorysmom, so you are saying that in order to keep my son from going to Japan, we should marry him off quickly?  Lol

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Lol...he has been with this girl for over 4 1/2 years and had a contract for the wedding venue...the wedding date in Dec. Is still in limbo due to awaiting the new orders. They may end up at courthouse!
  • navymom3

Betsy's mom-So were are you staying at this time? My husband did see a turtle while snorkeling at Koolina in one of the lagoons. But there is a spot on kamehameha hwy that you can see turtles. They come up on the beach to sun themselves. Kailua is a very nice place to live. If your daughter doesn't know the turtle spot let me know and I can explain where it is.
  • Craig

I had a peek at the available billets for CTT's.  They are actually sending 1st termers to shore duty, which I don't agree with.  They need to be on a ship to learn what they were taught (ie 6yo CTT's).  There is actually a bunch of CTT openings for 1st termers in Denver according to the list.  So, even if their Chief says they will not get they duty, they still need to submit it on their dream sheet.  Heck, it's called a dream sheet for a reason....

For those CTT (6yo)  their training should be revolved on which "V" school they get.

    • SLQ-32(V)1 – A simple threat warning receiver, it was capable of receiving high-bandradar signals of the type commonly carried on missiles and aircraft. The (V)1 was installed on auxiliary ships and small combatants such as frigates. This variant of the system is being phased out as current ships equipped become decommissioned.
    • SLQ-32(V)2 – Initially the most common variant, the (V)2 added the ability to receive surveillance and targeting radars. This provided a passive targeting capability for Harpoon missile-equipped ships. The (V)2 was installed on frigates, destroyers, and 270-foot (82 m) Coast Guard Cutters.
    • SLQ-32(V)3 – Expanding on the (V)2’s capabilities, the (V)3 added active radar-jamming capability. The (V)3 was installed on various combatants such as cruisers, large amphibious ships and high-value replenishment vessels.
    • SLQ-32(V)4 – Designed for installation on aircraft carriers, the (V)4 consisted of two (V)3 systems, one for each side of the ship, tied to a common computer and display console. Additional line replaceable units and software were added to support the wide separation of the two antenna/electronics enclosures.
    • SLQ-32(V)5 – The (V)5 was built as a response to the USS Stark incident in 1987. The (V)5 incorporated a compact version of the (V)3 system intended to give active jamming capability to the Perry class FFG's, which were too small to carry a full (V)3.

I know I've said this till I'm blue in the face, but your sailors need to logging into CMS and seeing which billets are available and writing their dream sheet around these billets.  If they put in for something that isn't even in the CTT billet structure, then they will be single out. Everyone will laugh at them.  I've seen it happen. "Oh, here comes Mr. Aruba"....

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Son was suppose to be on the Fitzgerald in Japan and he was excited about the possibilities on that destroyer. I agree with what you say about shore duty. Interesting about Denver...thanks for the info.
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Oh, rorysmom, that is so sad  :(   I hope everything works out so that they can have their wedding.

navymom, she and her bf are renting a house in Kailua.  Not sure where, but she said there are a lot of really nice houses there.  Lol  They are sharing a house with another Navy couple, so that's the only reason they can afford it.  I'll have to check out that resort at Koolina, maybe I'll get lucky and see some sea turtles too.  My daughter and her bf did get to see a bunch of them when she first moved there in May, so maybe she knows where they are.

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Somehow it makes it all the more tragic because he was a CT   Prayers to his family  http://www.navytimes.com/news/2011/08/navy-boxer-sailor-overboard-s...

  • NavyMom4J

Craig- thanks for the reminder about 1st duty availability in Denver...I remember your telling me that a while back so was surprised to hear it again that first tours could not go to Denver..your post here reminded me. I double checked with my  sailor and he actually did check CMS and thus put down Denver. Good advice!!!!!!!!!

And my prayers are with the Family who lost their son- Just reminds you that CTT's are just as vulnerable as anyone on the fleet to have an accident that causes their life.

  • Joy

Our son will be headed to the Denver area for CTT  C School.  Does anyone know if there is housing on base for sailors returning to C school from the fleet???  If not, where do they live for two months????  Of course, my son will find this out when he returns from leave, but I am just being a curious mom and want to know now!  Thanks
  • glassdog

Just got home from going to our sons graduation at Corry Station!  He is now a CTR!  We are so excited and happy that he will be home for a few days before heading to Hawaii.

We stayed at the Navy Lodge and would recommend it to anyone.  On the beach and clean.  Quiet also!

  • NavyMom4J

Joy- I am sure there is housing on base. - Married live off base. It is East of Denver in Aurora- the base is called Buckley.
  • JapanMom

Joy-he will be in the barracks or transient quarters.
