Craig or any one who can give me an idea.  I have been trying to  locate some info on the housing at Schofield Barracks.  I am just curious as to whether or not they are fairly good or are the dated.  My sailor is heading there soon and is wondering what they are like.  He will be required to live on base until he becomes an E4.  Any info would be great.  Thanks
  • navymom3

Glassdog- We have driven by there many times and they don't look to bad. But then we did not go inside the base just the road that goes through it.
  • Craig

glassdog - Why Schofield Barracks?  I thought these sailors go to Waihiwa.  The new building was built on the same spot as the dinosaur cage once stood.  I need to ask my kid. He's home on leave, and is out partying tonight.  So I will have an answer tomorrow...

What base is he getting stationed?

  • Craig

glassdog - My kid said no CT's live a Schofield Barracks.  It's only for Army.  If he's single at Kunia, he would more than likely stay at Whitmore Village at NCTAMS.  NCTAMS is where the new building is, which was built on the old dinosaur cage.  It's located in Waihiwa.  The barrack are nor new, and are not old.  Just average.

If the barracks are full there, then he would be in the barracks at Pearl Harbor.  If those barracks are full, then he might, go to Schofeild Barracks.  Which has never happened.

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

It was a huge kick to my gut when I found out that the SEAL was a CTR just like my son.   My son is now at Ft Meade now and called me the other day   He told me "mom its really easy to get a billet to go to Afghanistan here"    I know he just loves to push my buttons and every now and then does this shock treatment on me because he likes to "toughen me up"   It aint working!   He also said it was RELATIVELY safe for a CTR to be there.....any idea what that means?
  • glassdog

We were going by what his orders said and the address to mail things to until he gets to HI.  They state Schofield Barracks and even gave him a mail address to send things to before he arrives there!  Very confusing! He is going to contact his sponser, of which he  went from 0 to 2, and try to get some verification.
  • CTmomof3

Angie, I have tons of knowledge on that one.  My son CTR did a 13month IA assignment in Afghanistan.  It all depends on what he wants to " do" over there. When I read that one of the seals was a CTR I too felt shocked then my husband pipes in...that's what I was telling you our son wanted to do.. Holy #@#@.  When he came back last last year he was all pumped about working closely with the seals (I forget now what the name of the program is) ..Was doing pre-training as you need to be selected. Then he got married this past Dec and the wife sorta made him rethink things.  Whew dodged that bullet....didn't we..
  • idahojeep

Thank you to our CT community.  The losses are hard on everyone and I am so glad I can come here to read and share with all of you.

My sons are home for just a bit more and then off to Japan and eventually to the Fitz and Shiloh.  It has been such a joy and overwhelming time having them home the past two weeks.  I am trying very hard not to cry at the drop of a hat this week.  We don't know if they will be able to afford to come home next year.

Thanks to all of you for your continued support.

  • momma'o~32020

hi all...just checking in as i am new to the group.

my son just graduated and this is his next step.

i just spent the last hour or so reading all of the excellent information here, some i knew..most i didnt.:)

    thank you!

  • navymom3

Welcome Momma'o, You will find lots of info on here. And if there is a question just ask one of us should be able to help out. Or they know where to get the answer. Your son will love Pensacola.
  • momma'o~32020

    thanks!

i looked around for the last couple of weeks and kept coming back to this group.

settled in,read the info and now am confident im in the right place.

    i appreciate the welcome...

  • navymom3

momma'o what rate is your sailor? Mine is CTM and is almost done with a school.
  • momma'o~32020

    CTT...

    i used a little"code" in my name..."32020"

    C=3rd letter

    T=20th letter

    ;)

i just got off the phone with him...just started the phase process.

  • navymom3

Mooma'o- Your son must be at NAS then. If he likes to fish that could be something to do in his down time. My son and his friends go fishing on the weekends sometimes. He is at Corry station now. Enjoy being able to talk or text him when you like. May not always get to text right back as they don't get to carry there phone when on duty or watch.
  • lisarobin

Hello, I have been on here for couple of weeks mainly reading everyone else's blogs and info. Thanks Craig by the way for all your info. My question is: My son is in Phase 2 and we are headed down this weekend to see him. He says he can have his car now..i thought he had to be in phase 3. I need to know for sure though before I drive it down there and then he can't have it.

  • momma'o~32020

good tip on the text...i know that they wont always be around the phone..at this point any contact at any time is good after GL..:)

i wonder about fishing....he may enjoy it. ill mention it to him.

turns out his roomie was out of the same office and in dep for part of the time with him...kinda cool to see a familiar face walk thru the door.

he sounded good and ready to get it going.

    this kids fired up!

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

Found out my son will be heading to Afghanistan. Kind of took me by surprise and me being a news junkie is probably not a good combo, I will hear about every little thing and be worried. He is off training like crazy for it, so hopefully he will be safe and I pray the area becomes more stable if that is possible. I have another child moving across country at the same time so my mom nerves will be tested for sure!
  • JapanMom

Idahojeep-I know it is expensive to fly from Japan to the US.  Once they have been in Japan for 6 months they can request EML.  I am not sure what it stands for but they can request it twice a year.  It is part of the space A program.  They then can catch a military flight back to the US free of charge.  The best flights are out of Yokota air base (which there are shuttles too).  They fly twice a week.  The down side to this is you are on standby but you are a priority 2.  If there are open seats then it goes priority 1 (emergency leave) and then priority 2.  We are going to try and catch this flight this weekend to come home.  They fly right into Seattle.  You have to be flexible as it sometimes takes a couple days to get flights.  It saves a lot of money on flights!!!!
  • idahojeep

Oh that is great JapanMom.  I think this must be what my son was talking about when he mentioned MAC flights?

Best wishes to all and momoffour you are in my prayers.

  • NavyMom4J

My sailor just let me know he has orders to San Diego- USS Lake Champlain (CG 57). Not Denver, but he sure sounds very excited !!! I can't wait to find out more!

    Anyone know about this ship?

  • CorinneL

    CTmomof3 -

My son is a CTR3 and I remember when he was in his first couple of weeks of A school(last summer), he called home and was all excited about the possibility of a job working with a SEAL team.  He tried to tell me that the CTR just works on the sidelines and isn't in as much danger as the team.  Now days, his goal is in a different direction which makes me much happier.

  • navymom3

Navymom4j- congrats on the orders. What rate is your son as mine is waiting on orders also.

CTmom= that would scare me also.

momoffour- Is your sailor boots on ground or going to be on a ship.

  • NavyMom4J

Navymom3- We have been following our sailors since PIR together I think! LOL- He is CTT -

  • calliecl

Navymom4j - our sons will be going to same base but different ships! Has he found out anything about leave or date he will be going?
  • NavyMom4J

calliecl- wow- that is neat. He only had his verbal orders today- waiting to find all the details out. He said after Shipboard ops- he goes to San Diego...Shipboard ops ends 9/30.  I don't know how long he waits in-between the class ending and shipping out to San Diego or if he gets to come home in-between...???  All "I don't know" answers right now.
  • navymom3

Navymom4 I think so. Mine had pir 3-18. Div 108.
  • NavyMom4J

Navymom3: : ahh- maybe not- He PIR'd 4/29.  But I think you helped so many of us "new bees" on the Boot camp site here. I remember your being so helpful! :)
  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

He'll be on the ground. He is not due to leave for a while so as we are know things and orders can change lol!  Watching the weather, looks like a nasty hurricane heading to the east coast! Be safe everyone!!
  • navymom3

Navymom4j that could be it. Some of our names here are kind of the same. It is nice to be able to help sometimes like all the help I have gotten on here.

My son is suppose to grad a school sept 16th. He is doing great in class right now.

  • CTmomof3

momoffour, are they sending him or did he volunteer?  What rate is he?

CorrineL Ya that's what they "want" you to believe but it's not true..Trust me..

  • glassdog

Got some answers about the housing on Oahu.  He will be at Pearl or NCTAM.  Still not sure why his temporary mail address is to Schofield?  But at least we have an idea of where he will be living.

    Helps the mom nerves.

Any sailor heading into heavy seas(Afghanistan for instance) please be blessed.

  • Craig

Lisa - Phase 2 he can have a car.  Drive it down so he can experience things off base. So many sailors just remain on base, and end up saying Pensacola sucks because they never get out and do anything.  They have their whole life to play WOW, so do that later, experience Pensacola and the surrounding areas.

Lady H - Yea, I kind of messed that up when I look back on how I wrote it.  My intent was to say about O'brynt that was just a mere 3rd class that was only in the Navy in 1 year.  Sad, but this is what terrorism does.  May he rest in peace.

Japanmom - EML leave is Environmental and Morale leave.   Like you said, it allows you a higher priority for Military Airlift Command (MAC) flights.  I used it alot while in Scotland...

Here is a great link for MAC flights.  It gives you recorded messages for flight within 48 hours.

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

CTMom   thanks for the info about IA  As time goes on I may have more questions for you.   I know he is pretty excited about it, his girlfriend not so much   and he knows that I worry but sometimes if you say too much they just do the opposite  We'll just have to wait and see and pray
  • Craig

Here is the Navy official info on IA duty

    http://www.ia.navy.mil/

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

I have not a clue if it was volunteer or not, knowing my son it was LOL ( he is all about adventure). He is as all of them completely tight lipped  about everything job related. He is gone now and have not a clue where LOL! His friend is picking out his off base apt for him. He does have his cell phone with him so I can call! I know he is fine and having a great time which is all I care about, he was suppose to come visit this weekend but he is gone until Oct so I hope for a Halloween visit.
  • G'sproudmom

Ok my first time having a question. My son graduates on the first(CTT) and leaving NAS for some more training before he gets to his final destanation, Kaneohe. So question is....does he have to pay to ship his things home or does the Navy?
  • CTmomof3

momoffour is he a CTT,CTR,CTN etc? My son was with the Army do you know what branch he's going over with?
  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

CTN. I know he is going with guys from several branches and maybe a civilian or two. Trying to get a hold of him and several other family members after the earthquake but no luck so far.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Debbie and momfofour   I also talked with my son for a few minutes who is on base at Ft Meade   He said everything there was fine, no injuries just phones sporadic   He was able to get on facebook briefly and posted that he was outside learning a rifle drill for the honor guard when the earthquake hit.   He then called but we also got disconnected   So my guess is everyone is trying to call everyone and its a back jam

  • Craig

G's - A sailor can allows send stuff to his Home of Record.  Or, if you don't have the room, he can send it to non-temporary storage for the entire time he's at Hawaii.  Or, he can ship the stuff to Hawaii. The Navy will ship it for free.  However, he could rent a truck and ship it himself, and make a couple bucks, but to me, it's not worth it.  I'd rather see someone else do all the work while I'm watching drinking a beer.

Alot of people don't understand Non-Temporary stowage, so here is the rule (remember this is a Joint travel instruction, so it doesn't matter if you're Army, Navy, Marines, or Air Force.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Well, my son got his dream sheet today.  Choice #1, San Diego, #2, Hawaii, #3 Everett.  Not sure how I feel about it, since I'm on the east coast.  :(  Oh well, I'm at least hoping he gets one of his choices.  He said he should know in a few weeks.  I hope so, since he graduates A school on Sept. 23.  lol

G'sproudmom, maybe he will see your son there soon.  :)

  • Craig

Betsy - Is he a 4year CTT?  The reason I ask is usually the CTT's that go to "C" school get those duty stations...
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Craig, yes he is 4 year.  If that's the case, then why would they even give him the dream sheet?  Kinda seems senseless to me.
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

I'm just hoping that they don't send him to Japan.
  • NavyMom4J

Question then: I am confused to what is "C" school- My son said he is in Shipboard ops (currently taking) and sometimes refers to it as like a part of C school? But he just got orders to San Diego- assigned to USS Lake Champlain- (and will be going to Sea for part of this time I am sure) . He is 4 year CTT.  He put down San Diego as his 3rd choice on his dream sheet.

  • Craig

Betsy - I totally agree, why do they give them dream sheets?  Basically they are teaching them how to fill out the dream sheet.  In most cases duty stations are given out by class rank.  However, sometimes they don't, this is where the dream sheet comes into play.  This is why I have preached so many times that I think a sailor without a CAC card reader is a fool.

Him being a CTT operator means he has alot better opportunity of going to a shore station than a ship.  The duty stations you gave were all ships.  Now if you're a CTT technical (6 years), you basically know you have no hope going to a shore station.  You're "Haze grey, and underway".

NavyMom - He will know if he got a "C" school or not.  Have him tell you what Naval Enlistment Code, normally called NEC code.  Then you know exactly what he does.

If you look at this link, and hold down the "Ctrl" and hit "F" a find pop-up will display.  Seach for CTT.  Then you can see the codes they are assigned.  This is how I know what flavor of CT they are.  That code is like a dead give away on what they do.

I truly was doubting if I should post this link because it will probably really confuse you.  But I'm going to do it anyways.  Why?  Because my wife hasn't beaten up on me for a while, so I will let you ladies pitch hit for her and kick me in the "jimmy" also....~ha

  • Craig

Susan - Both glassdog and I met Molly while she was here in Denver,  She is an awesome lady.  I'm glad she got the money to help the sailors....Glad Pepsi recognized her efforts..
  • idahojeep

Betsy - my twins are both going to Yokosuka Japan and they have found out from most that it is an excellent duty station.  Many do not want to come home.  They are excited to go.  FWIW.
  • calliecl

Navymom4J - I am confused too. My son is also a 4 year CTT and his orders for San Diego also on a destroyer. Maybe that's where the needs of the navy are right now? Well he is excited. Was one of his top choices but I don't think he ever filled out a dream sheet.
  • mumziepooh

Hey guys!  All of you east coasters - praying for your safety!  We do hurricanes in Houston - in fact we would LOVE one right now!

Son and husband just arrived in Washington - he checks into Whidby tomorrow - he is excited.  He was home for 2 weeks for leave and told me that he is going to try to either work with the SEALS or go IA.  Sigh.  I knew about the SEALS thing but had hoped he wouldn't want IA.  So, thanks for the info, Craig!
