    I have to share this. I am always amazed how Navy people are always there to help if needed. My son graduates today and wants to stop along the way back to Conn.  One option is the Shenandoah Park, So I called today to find out how exactly one gets there from PCola. not real GPS coordinates..  I just happened to mention to the very nice guy I was talking to that he's in the Navy. Well, low and behold this person happened to be an EX Navy Senior Chief who was stationed here at the Sub base in Groton. Just got out after 14 yrs. He was concerned with him driving the long distance gave me advice to pass along,what route to take to avoid the DC-NYC tolls..AND..his person cell number in case he needs any help.  Stunned I was.  This person doesn't know me or my son from Adam and offered assistance if needed.    This is the second time a total stranger had offered help to one on my children.  The first time 2yrs ago my oldest son was  on his way to Afghanistan and his contacts did come in time.before he lift his duty station.  This wonderful women in SC had me send them to her and she drove to the training base he was at to deliver them. Navy Moms, Dads or Ex Navy etc are truly the best in my book.

    What an awesome story!!!!

    Do any of you know if I can send something to my daughter via FedEx to Corry?

  • NavyMom4J

    CTmom- The Navy is truly a family!

  • navymom3

    Salpetty- I just sent stuff usps to my son at Corry. I think even though you send fedex it still goes to the post office there.

  • NavyMom4J

    Salpetty- I too sent things UPS and also priority mail from PO and it got there just fine.  FedEx- goes there too.

  • salpetty

    Yeah... I know that.  I'm a total fan of the post office (I never understood those who don't trust the PO...werid)....I've been sending her stuff both ways.  I find that the bigger the box (priority mail) the faster it gets there.  I just need to send her a letter size thing (her credit card) very fast.  The post office has been taking over a week for letters.

  • CTmomof3

    Fedex goes there but only a couple times a week. UPS is daily as well as Priority mail (i found this the cheapest and best)which is how I sent things.  FYI. for some reason packages can't be picked up on Sat.  (no clue why) so best to time it for Mon -Fri.

  • CeliaSews

    Betsy - congrats! What a wonderful accomplishment for your son.  When did he finish BC and how long was he in school for CTT. That's what my SR will be doing.  I think he said it's CTT AEF?

  • CTmomof3

    Craig. I was reading the info you posted to me about storing a POV. If I read correctly a person can store it at a facility they choose  instead of having it at a service designated facility.  Is there a way to find out "Not To Exceed the Government constructed storage cost.   What the cost is?

    a. Government-procured Storage Available:

     (1) If a Service elects to store a member’s POV, then the member may personally arrange storage at a commercial facility.

    (2) A member who personally arranges for storage at a facility other than the Service- designated facility is reimbursed for the actual storage cost Not To Exceed the Government constructed storage cost.

    Where can I get some information on my son having his car in Pensacola while he's at CTT A-school? His home state is NJ.

  • navymom3

    Celia- He can have his own car when he gets to phase 2. But he has to pay to get it there.

  • salpetty

    I SMILE:  My daughter is in her first week...so far so good....despite the lame attitude of some of the fleet returnees :(   Hope he enjoys it!!!

  • salpetty

    Tomorrow night is the Carrier Classic on ESPN...Any of you gonna be watching?  This should be exciting.  One of my most recent CO's got picked in the lottery to see it live!!!  So excited for him!  Check out the link.

  • salpetty

    Not necessarily..my daughter just says that half of her class of 19 people is fleet returnees and the difference between them and the new sailors is astounding.  And of course..I don't mean all of them.  I think she just got stuck with a group that happens to be ridiculous.  She says they are very disrespectful to the instructor, talk when they are supposed to be quiet and studying and just basically rude and immature.  But I think that behaviour comes from lack of leadership elsewhere.  She describes them as a bunch of immature junior high boys instead of adults.  Of course I told her what I told her before she left....In the Navy you will meet some of the lamest people on the planet, but you will also meet the most awesome people you'll cherish forever :)

  • salpetty

    Lady...I just remembered....Your daughter was the YN...I forgot to tell you earlier that I am so happy she was able to switch.  I was YN...and I hated yeomanism.  Thank God I didn't work too much in my rate...I would go nuts!  So my hat goes off to her!!!!

  • navymom3

    I agree Clockard. Wait until they have there first test and don't do well cause they didn't pay attention. I am sure they will start.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

    Visiting my CTT at his 1st duty station. He just arrived here early Oct. And was out to sea for a short time arriving back yesterday. We were able to go on his ship with him and he gave us a wonderful tour! Have to say that it was highly emotional and made all his hard work so real to me! It was an amazing experience.
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

    Celia, my son started his actual CTT A school in mid July.  He graduated from A school on September 24 and then immediately started his shipboard ops class.  I think class was 7 weeks longs.

    navymom, thanks I'm proud of him.  :)

    I SMILE, that is awesome!

    CT Mom, what a great story.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

    rorysmom, that's awesome.  What a great time that must have been.

  • navymom3

    rorysmom does he happen to be in Mayport. A ship returned yesterday there. If so enjoy your visit.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

    Just got back from Mayport...Norfolk. My first visit to this area and truly enjoying it.
  • salpetty

    Craig...Sorry to hear about your daughter.  I will definitely be praying for her.

  • CTmomof3

    That's awful Craig. Hope she continues to get better.
  • navymom3

    Craig- Sorry to hear about your daughter. Glad you are able to be there with her. And wish her a speedy recovery.

  • NavyMom4J

    Craig- So sorry to hear - a parents worse nightmare- as I can relate with my son who was snowboarding and broke his wrist - the emergency visit at the ski slopes are expensive...needless to say, much minor injury than your daughters. I am praying for her and a speedy recovery- hope she was wearing a ski helmet...so is so lucky!

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

    Craig, ((hugs))  I hope she continues to recover well.

  • cinder

    Craig glad to hear all the scans were clear. Happy Veterns Day 11/11/11!
  • sunshine73

    Happy Veterans Day!!! Thank-you to all who serve, have served, or support a loved one who serves. Craig, sending prayers and well wishes to you and your daughter.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

    Craig...as an old peds ICU RN I sure was glad to hear they kept your daughter for a bit longer. Sometimes they push them thru so quick. Hope the headaches are getting better!
  • CTmomof3

    Curious, why if your sailor is driving to their duty station and taking leave as well, do they need to show a map quest print out of their route? I just found this a tad odd. He was even told not to deveate from it.
  • navymom3

    ctmom- Because they need to know where you are at all times. My son had to do the same thing when he changed duty stations from Washington to Florida.

  • CTmomof3

    Thanks, that's what I thought. The don't deveate from it got me. No spur of the moment site seeing I guess. These are guys do they listen? Lol
  • navymom3

    CTmom- mine still kinda did his own thing. So if they sway a little its no big deal. Just dont get in trouble where they sway to. LOL

  • mumziepooh

    Craig - I am so glad your daughter was ok.  That is frightening!

  • Craig

    Hey all,

    All is fine.  My daughter is back at college.  Geez, talking about putting the fear in god in you....  Wow....

    Speaking of that...  I need to liven up this group....  I found this really funny...

    Hey no one else is on, so we'll give other members something to look at tomorrow morning...  It will keep it exciting in here....

    So, since I have got the last post for tonight, I need to go out in style....

    Since we are talking about dogs, I thought this was really cool...
    Do Dogs Have Souls? Catholics v Cumberland Presbyterians

    This is literally a 'church signs' debate, being played out in a southern town, between the Catholic church and a (fundamentalist) Presbyterian church that sit side by side. From top to bottom shows you the response and counter-response over time.

    The Catholics are displaying a much better sense of humor! You get the impression that the Presbyterians are actually taking this seriously!

    P.S. – Apparently Cumberland Presbyterians don't know how to spell 'Catholicism.'

    I love the banter between the churchs!! I am forwarding that to all my fellow dog lovers!! Glad to hear your daughter is ok, nothing can make your hair go gray quicker than if something is wrong with your kiddo!!

  • RED (Ship 11 Div 317)

    HAHA, THAT CHURCH POST WAS HILARIOUS!

  • salpetty

    RED:  I didn't know you were on this group too!  Good to see you :)

  • sunshine73

    Craig is back!!!

    My daughter graduates BC 11/23/11 and will be heading to Florida for CTN? school. I am a complete newbie at all this! Thought I should stop here and see what the heck happens next. I am so super proud of her and anxious to be letting go of my first born all the same time!

  • CeliaSews

    Does anyone have any info on leave for the holidays for newly graduated recruits?  My son will be arriving in Pensacola for CTT school on Dec. 17th.  We are all being told they have to report there and request leave.  What are the chances they'll get leave? Is the school closed for the holidays?

  • Craig

    For those that don't understand my quota comment below, Lady H wrote this response on another thread.  It is excellent...

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Advancement up to E3 is automatic; put in the time, keep your nose clean and a Sailor advances to the next rate.
    From E4 and up, advancement is competitive. There are a limited number of openings for each rate and rating. Sailors are ranked twice a year and the very best fill the available positions, aka, the quota. Quotas change every 6 month advancement cycle based on the needs of the Navy. In recent years some quotas have been very small because Sailors are not leaving the service due to the bad economy. In some ratings advancement has come to a virtual standstill.
    Example: Currently there are 1,345 eligible  MA2s competing for a quota of 98 available MA1 positions. That means only 7.29% of the candidates are advancing. The 1,247 who were passed over have to wait another 6 months. During that time they will work harder, study for tests and do everything possible to increase their chances for next time. Its not like boot camp where everyone gets do-overs until they pass.
    The quotas for E4, E5and E6 were announced today. That means the actual promotion lists are only days.  away.
  • CeliaSews
    Any thoughts on the leave?
  • salpetty
    Another thought on Advancement....at least past the E-3 level....Sailor's need to be keeping track of everything they do, i.e. extra courses, community service/volunteering, collateral duties, etc.  When it comes time to put in a brag sheet (for evals), this stuff needs to be on there.  It's best to keep an ongoing journal of everything you do so you don't scramble at the last minute trying to remember everything you did for the last year.  Sailor's aren't advanced based on the exam alone...they need good evals and that's where they are ranked against their peers as well.  If your sailor wants to make a career out of the Navy, the goal will probably be to make Chief.  So they need to have some sh*t hot evals from the get go as this is what the Selection Board looks at as well.
    I've been cramming this down my daughter's throat since she joined....She's just now starting to listen to YN1 Mommy.
    Craig,
    My son is telling me that the CTT rate is overmanned right now.  He told me that daily new people are arrivining for CTT school and that they only have two instructors which is one reason it is taking so long to school up. All of the stuff you have shown is that it is undermanned.  What gives?  Can you put on your super spy outfit and find out the real scoop?
