(Unfortunately) need plus size t-shirts! lol!

  • cinder

I just need scoop neck hate boys they choke me lol
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Haha, Craig, I'm sure you are right, he will miss those days.

I would also love to get in on the t-shirts.

  • Craig

Maybe I should get some of these "man hole covers" too...  Man, I found these on Ebay and find them really funny....  Why?  Because I'm just wondering who the sailor is saluting. I'm thinking it's probably the short guy who is "standing at attention & saluting" in front of him (if you know what I mean)......

  • salpetty

Craig...you kill me!  Hilarious..  My daughter saw a shirt at Corry that said, "In God We Trust.  All others we monitor"  Or something to that effect.  I thought it was pretty clever.

  • cinder

My son bought me that t shirt for my birthday. We need something like that for cryptology group.
  • harpist mom

I would like one of those shirts too. my son will be in cryptology training after boot camp

  • Debbie G.

Welcome erica80!  My son just started A School for CTN and he's felt like the old guy at (almost) 25 amongst lots of much younger sailors.

  • navymom3

Welcome Erica= This is a great group. If you have any questions just ask. Someone is bound to know the answer. The CT field is a great field to get into. What does your husband do now? I have 2 son's in the navy 1 is an AT2 the other one is CTM.

  • navymom3

Erica I am sure he will go great in school. My CTM son had a fleet returnee in is class. He made great friends with him and they both ended up going to Japan together. My other son who is AT2 said if he has to go into another field he wants a CT field also.

  • cinder

Welcome Erica my son is waiting for his c school CTT. Lots of fleet returnees, so your husband won't be the only one.
  • Debbie G.

Yes, my son just classed up this past week and he said his CTN class is almost entirely fleet returnees so he should have lots of company!

  • Craig

erica - Today's Navy is doing a lot of things that suck.  Your husband is getting caught with a country that is in economic turmoil.  CTR is an awesome job that will allow him to get the SBI security clearance that will benefit him greatly once he gets ready to retire.  So, he really needs to get the basics of CTR and come up to speed quickly.

I know you're new to this group, and these ladies know that I speak the truth and give advise without sugarcoating stuff.  So, I'm going to put this out there so you can understand the sailors point of view....

So secondly, lets face it, the writing is on the wall.  He is just beginning CTR and has almost no chance of making Chief in the CTR rating.  He might know the Navy really well, but he doesn't know the rating, which will hurt him.  The E4's and E5's sailors under him need to have someone that knows the rating really well so he can fight for them when some officer starts trying to make them do useless stuff.  So your husband really needs to come up to speed really, really quick.  He is really going to have a hard time with these E4's and E5's knowing more than him but just remember, these sailors have been in the rating since day one they know it.  As hard as it is, he will need to trust their knowledge.  I know I would have a hard time with that, but having seen this before with other sailor doing this, I know it.  So, kind of discuss this part with him so he's not totally off guard when it happens.  He needs to start thinking about it and have a game plan in place.

Lastly, I was in the era of overmanning in 1996.  It was called Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA).  The Navy originally offered lump sum payouts to senior sailors to get out.  The amount was $60K which is nothing.  Then they offered full monthly retirement less 1% per year you get out early since you start getting paid earlier (mine was 2% since I got out with 18 years).  When you figure the amount you get in 2 years ($30K), minus the $75 per month, then the breakeven point for me was age 57.  After age 57 then I finally begin losing $75 per month.  Who cares?  $75 at age 57 means nothing.  Frankly it means nothing now, nor 15 years ago when I retired.

So, I'm just telling you this because I know the Navy will do this program again.  It has already has been passed by Congress.  The Navy just hasn't began it yet.  So start figuring the numbers now and get a full understanding on how well this program works for the sailor.  It's awesome!  But people are scared because they never ran the number.

Since I run my own Navy website I have to stay fully informed about all Navy things.  This just came out today about TERA.

Sorry this post was soooo long, but I love saving sailors.  So don't kill the messenger... Just trying to give you non sugarcoated advise....

    Cool?

  • Craig

p.s. Forgot to add....  the thong  will do wonders for his morale, but really sucks for his morals...

  • salpetty

Craig is very knowledgable....but also extremely HILARIOUS!!!  I'm heading to Pensacola next friday to visit my daughter.  I can't wait!  She won't graduate until the following weekend but at least I get to see her.

  • Craig

Where are you staying?  Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville hotel is awesome...

    http://www.margaritavillehotel.com/

btw: Make sure you go to the Cryptologic museum in bldg 511 at Corry.  Read about the USS Pueblo and look at the pictures they have posted about the CT spaces...Wow!

    Go here and read this:

"I am the only active duty U.S. Navy warship held captive by a hostile government ~"

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/i-am-the-o...

  • salpetty

I'm actually staying at the Holiday Inn Resort on the beach. That museum sounds like a must see.  Definitely will do that.

A bunch of new sailors are actually taking a PO indoc class tomorrow morning. I guess there's a class going on and they've been told to just take it and get it out of the way.  Weird thing is, I've taught that class recently and I still have all the materials/power points on my computer.  It's very hard to keep my mouth zipped when my kid brings up Navy stuff that I can help her with.  For some reason she doesn't want to hear it from me.  But then again, I get to say, "I told you so" alot :)

  • salpetty

Just read your link about the USS Pueblo.  That's some crazy sh*t!  I actually remember reading about those guys flashing the bird in the Non Resident Training Course "Captivity:  The Extreme Circumstance"....an interesting read, an easy course,  and worth a couple retirement points.

  • Craig

It's good that she's getting the PO course.  So many wait until the last minute.

And I hear you about the kids not wanting to hear from the parent. I'm going though this at this exact moment.  But I'm sucking it up.....  Go USAF!!!!

  • salpetty

Did any of you happen to see that the US Navy Facebook page mentioned Navy for Moms and shared the link to this site?  They called N4M "A great resource for our greatest resource"  So cool!  Here is the link to their wall...you'll have to scroll down...they posted it on Wednesday:

  • cinder

    What is the PO course?
  • salpetty

Petty Officer Indoc.  Just basically a course teaching you how to be a petty officer.  It's required.

  • sunshine73

Hey guys, I found this site for CT stuff. Nothing all that wonderful but it might hold some of you over until Craig and some of the others get their shirts ready. http://www.zazzle.com/cryptologic+technician+gifts

  • cinder

Ok thanks I will check and see if my son has done this.
  • Debbie G.

    love the shirts - thanks!

  • navymom3

Salpetty I did see the article. It was great to see.

Welcome Tabby- My son is CTM and is in Japan now. I believe it is 3 yrs sea duty first. I am sure someone else has a better answer. Craig???

  • navymom3

Thanks ISMILE I knew someone had this handy.

  • Debbie G.

Are the CTN's the same for Sea/Shore rotation?

  • Debbie G.

ok, thanks.  for some reason i thought that sea rotation for CTN's wasn't really at sea because of security reasons but i'm new to this!

Went on a morocycle ride in San Diego for a boy that requested there be 100 motorcycles ride by his house, oh well he only got 3,000.

  • navymom3

Cinder that is so cute. We went on a ride yesterday it was really nice out about 77 degrees. It is all overcast today but still about 74.

  • cinder

    How cute is this dog?

  • navymom3

He must really like to ride. He is so cute.

  • cinder

It was 64 and it was cold, but yesterday it rained so all was good.
  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

In Norfolk visiting the CTT prior to his first deployment. He'll be gone for up to 6 months. Having a great time. Loved seeing his workspace. First time for his father, second for me. Sailor is so proud and we are learning a lot about his job. I keep thinking how blessed we are in this day and age to have the technology we do to be able to communicate with him at times when he's gone!
  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

My son leaves for his first deployment in about eight weeks. He will be gone for six months also. he said that he might be able to Skype sometimes which would be great!  I worry more about the traveling in planes getting there and the times that they leave the safety of the base.I will a happy camper next fall when it is all over  LOL!

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Absolutely Mom...! I agree! We saw War Horse recently and I cried thru about 80% of that darn movie btwn loving those animals and the thought I can't imagine how it must have been sending our children off to a war and not hearing from them for years!
  • cinder

Yay! My son just called and he started his C school today for CTT, so he is going to Taco Bell to celebrate.

  • cinder

Hey Craig my son said he has 3 more classes after c school, what are these?
  • Craig

cinder is he a 4 or 6 year CTT?

  • Craig

    Emma - Woo-hoo... A true CTR now.....

You watch, in 2 years YN will be short and they will ask people to cross rate to it....  Only in the Navy...

  • cinder

He is a 6 year CTT.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Lady Hamilton, the same thing happened with my son's CTT rate.  It was undermanned and now is overmanned, just since he started his A school.  My son just got his Orders and he finished his A school in Nov.  Hoping that your M gets the Puget Sound.  My son did get Bremerton.

  • CRF230dad

cinder My son started C school also. They may be in the same class (Alpha shift) or I'm sure know one another.

  • CRF230dad

Craig, If he takes the FSP at the beginning of his hitch should he still request it again before separation?

  • cinder

My son told me that one of the classes after C school is ship ops, so I guess they don't have such a long wait for those.  Anyone have advice for CTT C school?  Is it hard what should he focus on etc.

  • CRF230dad

I have corresponded with several active duty CTTs via facebook and other web forums before and since my son joined. They said they learn in steps and it's not that bad. I told them my son had no electronic background at all. They all said if you smart enough to make that rate, you pay attention and stay focused it shouldn't be an issue.

  • salpetty

I agree, CRF230dad.  My daughter (who has no electronic background whatsoever) is actually doing extremely well.  And there are plenty of opportunities for study.  In fact, sailors who scored below a certain percentage on a test were required to attend a study session.  I think the ASVAB does a pretty good job of figuring out what each person is capable of.

  • cinder

Good to hear!  My only concern is in A school he didn't have to study and this time they actually get books to take home and study.  He hates to study. LOL
