Per the Facebook topic. The CT sailors always goes way overboard when it comes to security (which is actually a good thing). I have never heard of the Navy wanting to stop people from using Facebook. All they are saying is be careful when using Facebook...
Yea, when you will read military stuff in the newspaper or on the news. You should say clear of those topics with your sailor. The reason is we (the CT's) get so use to working with classified information that we talk openly about it at work. You might mess up and say something you shouldn't when you talk to family members about military stuff in the newspaper. What happens then is you must to a "Self Report" to the Security Manager and this gets logged into your record. They say these (self-report) don't count against you, but they do. What's good about getting this logged is when you do your next polygraph and they ask if you ever pass classified information to someone not authorized to receive it, you can say "Yes". They will then ask if you reported it and you say "Yes". They check it out and your golden. However, if you fail this question, you're screwed. Bottomline is just don't talk real world military stuff. Stay away from it. Then they never have to second guess stuff. Just like here with me, you'll notice I will never talk about real world military topics.
But here is what the Navy is officially putting out:

Ok, maybe I'll talk about the new Air Force aircraft carrier....

My daughter just got orders to a pre-com unit for the USS Arlington (LPD 24). She’s gonna be a plank owner!!!! I am so proud of her. She heads to Norfolk in May! But of course she comes home to Long Beach first!!

What is a plank owner???
Apr 13, 2012
salpetty
A plank owner is a term for an original crew member around when the ship is being readied for commission and/or part of the commissioning. The Arlington is expected to be commissioned in late winter/early spring 2013.

That is very cool she must be very excited. I couldn't tell by the picture but what type of ship is it?
Apr 13, 2012
salpetty
LPD - Amphibous transport dock or Landing platform dock. She is very excited. I guess a Senior chief from that unit was visiting Corry today and my daughter said he was really cool and talked about other members of the crew that are just real nice people. She's looking forward to all the training she's gonna be getting prior to commissioning.

Oh I know. A few members of my unit and myself worked during the USS Dewey Commissioning a couple years ago here in Seal Beach, CA. What a sight. Here is a picture of the ship being "brought to life."

Although it was only a weekend trip (for a wedding) and we didn't see him much, we'll take whatever we can get. I know one thing I like waiting at the gate with him better than curbside goodbyes. They suck... lol Well 40 more days and we"ll hit P-Cola to visit him. Til then...

You'll be in heaven when you can visit him in Pensacola. You should be able to see a lot of him then...enjoy :)

Will their address in Pensacola be a PO Box or will there be an address I can send a pkg over night with Fedex
Apr 16, 2012
cinder
When they get there they will be able to give you an address to mail stuff. It will not really get their over night or next day because it has to go through the military mail first. I always mail as cheap as possible LOL.
Apr 16, 2012

Cinder. Thank you. My son got there Saturday but said he won't have the address until today. I can ship pkgs from work with Fedex or UPS but I don't think they ship to a PO Box. Do you know how long it will be before we can visit?
Apr 16, 2012
salpetty
Their address will be a regular address and then a PMB number. For instance the address looks like this:
1234 Main Street
PMB 1234
Pensacola, FL 00000
They can get stuff from UPS. I mostly sent my daughter stuff using the Large Flat Rate box from the US Post office. You can put 20 pounds of stuff in there for around $16. Way cheaper than UPS or Fedex (even if you used multiple boxes). We live in California and it arrived in as little as 2 days.
Apr 16, 2012
salpetty
Oh...and you can get flat rate boxes for free either at the post office or you can order them on line and they'll send you as many as you want...again for FREE!

Smon, gee I thought I was on the CTI site --not too good at this.... when his ship was commissioned (Apr.09) in Oxnard, CA we then drove up PCH 1 to Monterey and SF. Yes, Monterey is really nice! He's been in SD and before that Hawaii, so the climate works for him! Guess he'll never want to live in the heartland again.

I don't even know the lingo of CT. Is there a place to go to have the different rates explained? and what they do?

Does anyone know about air force cargo flights that carry military personnel overseas? What are these flights like (12 hours on a plane across the ocean ain't no fun!)? What air force base in Washington state would these flights originate from? They only fly out on Thursdays if you can get on the list. My son graduates C school from Goodfellow, comes home (if he would get his reservation made), and then will fly out from home to Seattle on this AF cargo flight directly into Misawa. He doesn't really know what is going on and at this point I will be relieved when he is finally in Japan and can relax! I need some info and you all are the experts! Thanks gals (and guys).

Craig
Most of the time the AMC (Air Mobility Command) flights are just contracted civilian airlines. The government just pays them to use their pilots and planes. However, they do have C141's that make routine flights. But I would think that would be strange in your sons case.

Really missing my son today on my birthday. He call yesterday quite upset because they heard that all leaves for anyone in student status at Corry have been revoked indefinitely. Which means that other that a long weekend with an out-of-bounds chit no one is going home on leave. Also for any CTTs not already in V3 training, no one can class up until October because of the budget. He was hoping to start mid May after C school graduation. So if he doesn't get shipboard ops and SLQ training done before then and depending on when orders come in, he will be stuck at Corry well into 2013. It wouldn't have been so bad but not being able to come this summer has really got him down. We may not see him until he leaves for his 1st duty station sometime nest year. 8^(

Don't know the reason for the clamp down at Corry but I fear this may have the reverse affect and some sailors may just quit.

CRF: First of all.. Happy Birthday to you :) Do not despair. The Navy changes on a dime. I swear. I've seen it happen. One week there is no funding for anything and the next week all of a sudden doors and opportunities open. Take this info with a grain of salt. At some point during A school, my daughter "heard" that it didn't look like anyone would get orders till October. Well guess what, all of a sudden billets opend up and she's heading out in a couple weeks. I've also seen this happen to myself. I swear it seems like the Navy budget changes on a minute by minute basis. Hang in there dad. and again Happy Birthday!!!
