HA HA, Craig! The picture is cute! As you know, I am still a new Navy Mom, so I do not know the implications/rules for phase 2 or phase 3 liberty. My son does not supply many details - I just repeated what he told me. He said that they were not allowed off base unless they had someone to go with them. My husband and I were there on Memorial Day and saw the barracks and beach volleyball site in your pictures below. We were impressed! When I entered the barracks lobby, it was interesting to hear the shout, "Female on deck!" I must say that there were a lot of pizza deliveries while I was at the barracks.

That is very funny Craig. I love your style of humor!! By Phase 3 they should be allowed off base without a buddy. However, they are highly encouraged to never go alone as (1) Corry isn't exactly in the best neighborhood, and (2) a couple years ago a female sailor was murdered (see link). If you saw that area, it's just common sense that you would not go alone. Why anyone would be PTing at 8 pm in that neighborhood is beyond me. Corry has a track for that purpose.

harpist - The base is always changing the rules, so I just needed to understand if they changed it for phase 3. Sounds like Phase 3 remains the same.
Here is the rule book for NATTC. Look about page 20 for the Phase liberty stuff. If your son is having any problems with the electronic parts, just let me know. I'm an expert with electronics and can easily explain it on all levels of understanding.

salpetty, My son is not at Corry yet - he will be there after his initial electronics course. He said the rules are much stricter at NATTC - it is a requirement to have a buddy to go offbase there, but the rules are not as strict at Corry Station. The murder of the female sailor is quite tragic. I am sad for her family. We saw those billboards all over Pensacola while we were there, requesting any leads.

salpetty
I know. I just hope they continue to investigate and find her murderers. It must be hard for her family not have closure. In my opinion, Corry is way too unsecure of a base. They let almost anyone in and don't even come out of the guard shack to really inspect ids. Just get a pizza sign on your car and you can drive right in with no questions asked. I saw this happen on more than one occasion. And unfortunately not every sailor has street smarts. There are a lot of sailors that assume that every neighborhood is just as safe as their own.

Hello all. My son just arrived in Pensacola Sunday night. Sounds like he is also at NATTC. He said he will start classes (don't know when) as more arrive. He is hearing horror stories of how long some wait. He will eventually go over to Correy Island. With so many going thru boot camp, I also don't understand the long waiting periods. I talked to my son last night and suggested he "volunteer" to do so much as possible to stay busy until the classes start.
Jun 5, 2012
harpist mom
Based on what my son told me, everyone is assigned a "job" until classes begin, even if it is a maintenance-type (janitorial) assignment. My son had office jobs, for the most part, until he began class a week ago.

harpist mom, thanks for the info. Thinking someone had told me that in a round about way. Yesterday and today he is trying to "check off" on several different duties before Thursday.

cindy - All CTT 6yo & CTM's go to NATTC (at NAS Pensacola) for basis electronic school. All other go directly to Corry.
To me, I think it's foolish to volunteer for anything. If you have that much time on your hands to volunteer for a job, then you should be cracking the books on the electronic stuff or the Navy stuff. Heck you can do a lot of online course that will help you. All you need to do is log in on the computer (which they teach you at boot camp) and do them. It really looks good on a sailor when they do this. It actually goes into your service record and shows that you are a "hot runner". Heck, I'd rather kick back and work my 1/2 days and enjoy things on base at NAS Pensacola. Then doing courses for the other 1/2. It's a lot better to me, to see a sailor trying to promote themselves than sitting there and volunteering to make coffee for some Chief. When I receive sailors service records I use to look for things like that.
Per the waiting time, understand your son needs to get one of the most highest security access the Navy has. Thank God they are making sailors wait. It shows they are not just rubber stamping our country interest. It shows they are making sure our sailors are trust worthy.
btw: I love the Corry "Island" comment.. ♫ Just sit right back and you'll hear a tell ♪

Our son recommended this Nat Geo Video and I thought you guys might enjoy seeing part of the CT world. There are actually 4 parts. I found it very interesting that they show as much as they do.

harpist - Actually, it might be even "tail".
That Ginger Grant had a nice tail. What was Gilligan thinking by sleeping on top of the skipper? I'd be sleeping on top of Ginger if it were me... Just saying....
Even that Ginger lookalike, Eva Grubb, would be hot to me if I were on that Island for that long, and having to deal with Gilligan always f*cking everything up.
You like how I twist a totally normal conversation to something that hasn't a thing to do with what we were originally talking about?
Here is some trivia:
Who is Jungle boy in this photo?
Sorry, long day.... Just needed to have some fun.....

Craig.... gotta laugh at myself that my "island" remark! Geez, sleep deprived is my excuse! The word "volunteer" was the best I could come up with at the time. Crap, I even spelled CORRY wrong! I hate editing myself. I am glad that you help us along the way. My son isn't always good at giving me details like I want but I know he has alot more important things to remember. My nickname has been "scarecrow" and now all of you can see why! :)

no worries cindyship, we all understand sleep deprived. We are all military parents, remember. And I agree that our kids do not always convey information correctly. If they did, this website wouldn't be as popular as it is.lol

I think what Cindy meant by volunteering was that the group he was in was given a list of things they needed to get taken care of as their duties until they "Class up" and I am sure he used the term volunteer as choosing to do something no one else really wanted to do. That is the gist of what I got from him. From what I have heard he hasn't had much extra time, except when he is done for the day. I know for a fact that any extra time he gets hes been studying! :)

There are volunteer jobs in Pcola. There are not to many but my son was able to work at the USO during his wait time. His roommate worked at the museum. I think they just happened to be in the group that got asked for volunteers.

I think my son said he volunteered at a softball game on base.
He is a little shy so it was good for him to get out and meet some people. He seemed to enjoy it and was wearing a t-shirt from the event when I visited him on Memorial Day. :).

Today marks the 45th aniversary of the attack of the USS Liberty AGTR5 by Israel.
We lost 34 sailors, mostly all CT's. God bless to these sailors. This was one of the most brutal and darkest day for the Cryptologic community.

We will never forget.
Here is the list of those that were killed. As you see, they were mostly CT's.

my board said there was flooding on corry and that they had gotten 13+ inches and were expecting another 12-18. doesn't sound like fun at all.

Talked to our sailor yesterday- He said that they were called to go move some sandbags for the off base housing. Said that it is not bad on the base, but that there was someone kayaking through the Wal mart parking lot.

Woo-hoo.... I just got back from Fort Sam Houston. That's where the military trains it's Hospital Corpsmen. My daughter is going to Air Force HM training there. I wanted to bring her car down to her, and get away from Colorado.
I actually took a video of all the Navy guys marching it. It's actually was really enjoyable to watch. You can see them marching here:

We got back from P-Cola on Wed. Spent 6 wonderful days visiting with our son. We saw NAS and Corry. Went to Pensacola Beach and Lambert's Cafe in Foley, Al. A must if you go to P-Cola, well worth the drive. Spent Father's day on the USS Alabama with him and his girl friend who flew with us. What a great day! Miss him already...

I posted this in the CTN section, but I thought about it and I'll post them here too.
If any of your sailors get orders to San Antonio Texas, then this is the base. I just got back from there. It's called Medina Texas. It actually is part of the land that Lackland Air Force base (LAFB) had. It is somewhat connected to it. It's on the west side of LAFB.
It's actually a brand new base that isn't on the maps yet. I took these pictures just last week.

Anyone have answers? Anyone have exp. with finding decent apts. in Monterey? There are no dorms for fleet returnees. Also, what's the chance of having the language assignment changed once you get there? New to the cite; not new to the Navy!
Jun 24, 2012
navymom3
Reids ma we normally don't get many CTI in here. But don't they have a Gateway Inn or Navy Lodge there he can stay at. I know in Pcola most fleet returnees stay at the Gateway Inn. I would ask this question in the CTI group to see if you get a different answer.
Jun 24, 2012
Reid's Ma
Is this not the group for CTI's? I'm confused already! Don't think he can stay at a Lodge for the # of mos. he'll be studying! I know an Army captain leaving Monterey and he had an apt. near 17 mi. drive. probably EXPENsive! If I'm on the wrong cite, redirect me please.
