harpist mom, thanks for the info. Thinking someone had told me that in a round about way.  Yesterday and today he is trying to "check off" on several different duties before Thursday.

  • Craig

cindy - All CTT 6yo & CTM's go to NATTC (at NAS Pensacola) for basis electronic school.  All other go directly to Corry.

To me, I think it's foolish to volunteer for anything.  If you have that much time on your hands to volunteer for a job, then you should be cracking the books on the electronic stuff or the Navy stuff.   Heck you can do a lot of online course that will help you.  All you need to do is log in on the computer (which they teach you at boot camp) and do them.  It really looks good on a sailor when they do this.  It actually goes into your service record and shows that you are a "hot runner".   Heck, I'd rather kick back and work my 1/2 days and enjoy things on base at NAS Pensacola. Then doing courses for the other 1/2.   It's a lot better to me, to see a sailor trying to promote themselves than sitting there and volunteering to make coffee for some Chief.  When I receive sailors service records I use to look for things like that.

Per the waiting time, understand your son needs to get one of the most highest security access the Navy has.  Thank God they are making sailors wait.  It shows they are not just rubber stamping our country interest.  It shows they are making sure our sailors are trust worthy.

btw:  I love the Corry "Island" comment..  ♫ Just sit right back and you'll hear a tell ♪

    Craig: Correction: "tale"  ;)

  • sunshine73

Our son recommended this Nat Geo Video  and I thought you guys might enjoy seeing part of the CT world.  There are actually 4 parts. I found it very interesting that they show as much as they do.

  • Craig

harpist - Actually, it might be even "tail".

That Ginger Grant had a nice tail.  What was Gilligan thinking by sleeping on top of the skipper?  I'd be sleeping on top of Ginger if it were me... Just saying....

Even that Ginger lookalike, Eva Grubb, would be hot to me if I were on that Island for that long, and having to deal with Gilligan always f*cking everything up.

You like how I twist a totally normal conversation to something that hasn't a thing to do with what we were originally talking about?

    Here is some trivia:

Who is Jungle boy in this photo?

It's a young Kurt Russell!  Interestingly, Kurt Russell was later to star in the movie Escape from New York.

Sorry, long day.... Just needed to have some fun.....

  • Craig

sunshine - That was an outstanding video!  Everyone should watch that....

  • cindyship11div168

Craig.... gotta laugh at myself that my "island" remark!  Geez, sleep deprived is my excuse!  The word "volunteer" was the best I could come up with at the time. Crap, I even spelled CORRY wrong!  I hate editing myself.  I am glad that you help us along the way.  My son isn't always good at giving me details like I want but I know he has alot more important things to remember.  My nickname has been "scarecrow" and now all of you can see why!   :)

  • sunshine73

no worries cindyship, we all understand sleep deprived. We are all military parents, remember. And I agree that our kids do not always convey information correctly. If they did, this website wouldn't be as popular as it is.lol

  • K8linSwims08

I think what Cindy meant by volunteering was that the group he was in was given a list of things they needed to get taken care of as their duties until they "Class up" and I am sure he used the term volunteer as choosing to do something no one else really wanted to do. That is the gist of what I got from him. From what I have heard he hasn't had much extra time, except when he is done for the day. I know for a fact that any extra time he gets hes been studying! :)

  • cindyship11div168

Exactly Sunshine73 and Katlin (k8linSwims08)  Navy 4 Moms is a huge blessing!

  • navymom3

There are volunteer jobs in Pcola. There are not to many but my son was able to work at the USO during his wait time. His roommate worked at the museum. I think they just happened to be in the group that got asked for volunteers.

  • harpist mom

I think my son said he volunteered at a softball game on base.

He is a little shy so it was good for him to get out and meet some people. He seemed to enjoy it and was wearing a t-shirt from the event when I visited him on Memorial Day. :).

  • sammy1990

thanks sunshine73 and lady hamilton for posting the links to that video. i found that very educational.

Today marks the 45th aniversary of the attack of the USS Liberty AGTR5 by Israel.

We lost 34 sailors, mostly all CT's.  God bless to these sailors.  This was one of the most brutal and darkest day for the Cryptologic community.

    We will never forget.

Here is the list of those that were killed.  As you see, they were mostly CT's.

flooding in p-cola? someone on one of my boards said that they are calling sailors in to help move equipment to prevent flood damage. anyone here following that?

  • navymom3

I know its been raining all day. My son's friend said there are areas of flooding. Just not sure where. She is not on base.

  • sammy1990

my board said there was flooding on corry and that they had gotten 13+ inches and were expecting another 12-18. doesn't sound like fun at all.

  • Fay

Talked to our sailor yesterday- He said that they were called to go move some sandbags for the off base housing.  Said that it is not bad on the base, but that there was someone kayaking through the Wal mart parking lot.

  • calliecl

Craig. Thanks for those links. What a sad and tragic story. As a mom of a CTT it was horrific to see all the CT's who died that day. I will certainly keep the families in my prayers.
  • sunshine73

I haven't stayed there but it looked ok on the outside. One of the moms on the Pensacola Moms site said she stayed there and it was fine. Enjoy your visit.

  • cindyship11div168

Just a tab bit excited!  Had to share, phone call  in the middle of the day could be good or bad!  Classed up!  :)

  • Kriss

My CTM Sailor son graduates on 6/22/12.  One week from tomorrow and he has no new orders yet.  Any one else that is a CTM and graduates on 6/22/12 have or don't have orders?

Very hard to plan our trip to see him.

  • cinder

My son just called and he is getting hisE4 pin on monday. He is very excited and promised pics.
  • salpetty

That is so awesome Cinder!!!  He's a Petty Officer now.  Good for him :)

  • cindyship11div168

Congrats Cinder to your son!!!! :)

Happy Father's Day to all you Navy Dads.

    Went to last Fridays graduation.

There was a professional Navy photographer there

  • Craig

Woo-hoo.... I just got back from Fort Sam Houston.  That's where the military trains it's Hospital Corpsmen.  My daughter is going to Air Force HM training there.  I wanted to bring her car down to her, and get away from Colorado.

I actually took a video of all the Navy guys marching it.  It's actually was really enjoyable to watch.  You can see them marching here:

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/hmhospitalcorpsmanaschoolinsananto...

I actually got to spend fathers day there.  Woo-hoo.....

  • cindyship11div168

Craig, thank you for sharing!  Welcome back and glad you were able to be there for Father's Day.

  • CRF230dad

We got back from P-Cola on Wed. Spent 6 wonderful days visiting with our son. We saw NAS and Corry. Went to Pensacola Beach and Lambert's Cafe in Foley, Al. A must if you go to P-Cola, well worth the drive. Spent Father's day on the USS Alabama with him and his girl friend who flew with us. What a great day! Miss him already...

  • harpist mom

Great photo! How wonderful that you spent Fathers Day with your son. It sounds like it was a good visit.

  • salpetty

Nice!  Sounds like you got rolls "throwed" at you :)  Glad you had a great Fathers Day!

  • dmr

was anyone at C school graduation today? Looking for pics of crypto grp. Know my daughter is photo shy .....

  • Craig

I posted this in the CTN section, but I thought about it and I'll post them here too.

If any of your sailors get orders to San Antonio Texas, then this is the base.  I just got back from there. It's called Medina Texas.  It actually is part of the land that Lackland Air Force base (LAFB) had.  It is somewhat connected to it.  It's on the west side of LAFB.

It's actually a brand new base that isn't on the maps yet.  I took these pictures just last week.

I'm glad you liked our great state of Texas so much, Craig! I am a native Texan and am definitely proud to be one! My dad was stationed at Ft Sam Houston during the Korean war.

  • cinder

CRFdad, what a great pic. Has your son completed V3 school? My son gets done with shipboard ops this week.
  • CRF230dad

cinder - One more month then he's done. He starts shipboard opps July 30. With any luck (barring holding and getting orders) they should be out of there before Thanksgiving.

  • cinder

I am hoping and praying that he gets stationed here in San Diego. We miss having him around.
  • Reid's Ma

Anyone have answers?  Anyone have exp. with finding decent apts. in Monterey? There are no dorms for fleet returnees. Also, what's the chance of having the language assignment changed once you get there?  New to the cite; not new to the Navy!

  • navymom3

Reids ma we normally don't get many CTI in here. But don't they have a Gateway Inn or Navy Lodge there he can stay at. I know in Pcola most fleet returnees stay at the Gateway Inn. I would ask this question in the CTI group to see if you get a different answer.

  • Reid's Ma

Is this not the group for CTI's?  I'm confused already!  Don't think he can stay at a Lodge for the # of mos. he'll be studying!  I know an Army captain leaving Monterey and he had an apt. near 17 mi. drive.  probably EXPENsive!  If I'm on the wrong cite, redirect me please.

  • Reid's Ma

Ok. I went to the CTI group and posted my questions there.  thanks!

  • calliecl

Looking for some information. My son is a CTT and was sent straight from A school to his ship which is on deployment. He mentioned that when he returns to his home port he will have more schooling. I was a little confused by this as I thought he was finished. Anyone have any info on what this might be?
  • navymom3

Callieci my oldest sailor just finished his 6yr mark last week and has been to 4 c schools. The last one before he could even change duty stations. The 1st one was just after going to sea for the first time. They said he needed a certain specialty before he could go to sea again. The more nec's they hold the better they are when it comes time to sign again.

  • Craig

callieci - It's always hard for me to remember stuff, but is your son a 4 year CTT or a 6 year CTT?

If he was a 4 year CTT then the reason they are sending him to a "C" school is funding.  The Government has different "colored" money.  Now it cost the command to send him, and not the Navy (as a whole).  The commands has a pot of money set aside from additional training for school.  This way they (the command) reap the benefit by having a sailor that is even more trained and having a skill the command can use.  In the Navy it's all about where the funds come from.

A good example was I was looking for $2.5M to upgrade some equipment I had.  The pot of money for upgrading equipment was nearly empty.  So, just for fun I asked for a state-of-the-art Cisco carrier class router that I didn't think they would approve.  It was the fastest router in the world.  Believe it or not, they approved it.  $55M  Why?  because the pot of money for buying new equipment had lots of money in it.  This solve lots of problems I had, and will keep me set for years to come.  It's all about the color of money you're working with.

  • calliecl

Craig, yes he is a 4 year CTT. That's interesting about the funding. Hadn't considered that. He said he's happy to do the schooling after a deployment-he's being told should be a bit easier than for sailors who haven't been deployed and haven't been doing their jobs yet. Navymom3--are nec's certifications?
  • navymom3

    callieci yes they are.

  • CRF230dad

Just stay away from the Ashton Inn Extended Stay
4 New Warrington Road nearest the Corry Main Gate. See my post in the "Looking for a hotel" disscussion above.

  • cinder

    Very nice!

callieci - To explain NEC's I wrote this for the CTN section a while ago

    :

I know some of you have asked about "C" schools that could be offered to your sailors.  Let me explain and give you a little background about what a "C" school is.

Lets say you want to learn to be an auto mechanic, that school would be considered an "A" school.  You are learning the basics.  Now suppose you want to be an auto mechanic that specializes on Corvettes.  Well you still need the basics, but now you need another school to learn Corvettes.  That school would be like a "C" school because now you're not just a plain old auto mechanic, now you are a specialist in Corvettes.

Same as the Navy.  You learn the basics in "A" school, then you go to a "C" school to learn a special skill.  When you go to a "C" school, you are assigned a Navy Enlisted Code (NEC) that tells everyone what your specialty is.  To find all the schools offered, you can go to this link: http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/nec/NECOSVolII/Docu...

To give you an example how this works, lets use CTT for an example.  Do a Ctrl-F and type in CTT.  Just keep arrowing down to find all the NEC's that CTT have.  A lot of CTT are in the 1700's and the 9100's series.  You can even see that CTT's are doing OS, ET, and other rating jobs.  These NEC number are always listed in numerical order.    When I talk to CTT at work I ask what their NEC is.  With that number I know what they do and I know their background.

Just for fun, search on Lady H's NEC if 9138.  Just Crtl-F and type 9138.  It will tell you what her daughter is trained to do....

    Does that make sense?
