    congrats robin! that went fast!

  • Arkansas Mom ship02 div948

Wow, the "Missle!" reminds me of the old Abbot and Costello routine, Who's on first !!  Hi everyone, my son leaves in 5 days for Boot Camp, if all goes as planned, he will go to Pensacola to A school for CTR.... He's very excited, I'm happy he's happy, but it seems kind of sureal he's going to be leaving, going to miss him so much... Love this site, thank you everyone for all the info !

  • Craig

Lady H - That is awesome!  Very well written.  I just found out 4 days ago that he had his IDW pin. That was outstanding for a 3rd class to have earned that.

  • Craig

robin - Does she have her orders yet?

  • Craig

Arkansas - Again, read this thread and you can track what your sailor is doing each day (within a couple days)...

  • Craig

robbin - You lost me after the Ft Meade statement...  Please clarify...

  • Jojo(Rich'smom)S11D005

Robin that's great...that means I'll get to go on another trip to see him!  yay!!

  • CRF230dad

Craig, Regarding the residency thing my son heard that if he switches to FL that when he separates he'll have to wait one year to use the GI Bill. Any input?

  • cindyship11div168

OK, need to vent just alittle.  I love this group, along with a couple of other groups and all of the great information and help I have recieved.  My issue is I have so many script error messages on NAVY for Moms website and it takes forever to load.  So I don't check in very often. Does anyone know if there is a Facebook group for Corry Station sailor's families, etc.?

  • Connie821

Regarding the residency thing.  I think it depends on the college he wants to go to after he gets out. I would check directly with the VA office of the college he wants to go to. Also, you can look at the specific State's regulations online by researching. We live in WA State and son thought he might like to go to University of Oregon (ducks!).  To get in-state tuition, he would have to either a)live there for a year after getting out, or b) pay state income taxes in the year before he got out.  Sometimes a sailor would not want to change his residency to whatever state he/she was stationed at; depends on tax rules!  WA state does not have personal income tax so my son will keep his in WA.  BTW- He just joined on 8/10 and is in DEP until Feb. Then off to CTR school.

  • Debbie G.

hi ... my son is done at corry and is now in san antonio (ctn).  anybody know of any groups other than the CTN group?  thanks!

  • Craig

CRF - Where did that come from about the resdency?  Yes, you're suppose to wait 1 year to regain the in state tuition.  However,

    1. You either sign up for the college course before you get out.

    2. Redo your residency 1 year before you get out (its as simple as when you changed it since you are going back to your Home of Record.

    3. Most states have a policy to allow those getting out to claim residency when they are discharge, with no wait.

It's not that hard.  Does he know where he wants to live when he gets out?

  • Craig

cindy - What do you mean script errors?  If you want to make your computer run fast, you should download CCLEANER.  It's the best program out there....

    Just go here:

    http://download.cnet.com/windows/

Search for CCLEANER and run it.  You will be totally amazed....

  • CRF230dad

cindyship11div168 This site does take forever to load, just to get to this group. You are not alone.

Craig, he will most likely return to Ca. to go to school. So he can either enroll before separation or switch back his residency one year before separation? I do not know how Ca. law stands on no wait.

  • CRF230dad

If it's solely based on the state where the college how does it work if someone uses an on-line school?

  • cindyship11div168

Thank you Craig!  Figured you would point me in the right direction :)  CRF230dad, at least it's not just me. :(

  • RoseRed Ship 12 Div 306

Hello, I am new to this. My SR is still in bc but will be headed to Fl for "A" school for CTM in Sept.

  • harpist mom

My son is currently in A school at Pensacola for CTM training. His PIR was 3/9/12 and he went to Pensacola to the NTTC location immediately; however, he did not class up until around 5/22, when he began the basic course. He was scheduled to go to Corry Station to begin the next course immediately, but three of the sailors in the class with names at the end of the alphbet had to wait because the class was full. He currently has an office job while he is waiting to class up again. He is scheduled to transfer to Corry Station and begin class on 8/22. Cross your fingers for us!

  • CRF230dad

    Welcome aboard RoseRed!

  • navymom3

Welcome  to all the new CTM's. My middle sailor is a CTM and loves it. He is now in Japan. I can say remind them to study hard and be careful of the safety hits when they get to the on hands stuff.

Harpistmom my son had a desk job also between a and c school. But his was at Corry. He said it was a lot better then cleaning.

  • harpist mom

Navymom3, what are safety hits? Yes, I think my son likes the desk job more than cleaning too! :)

  • navymom3

harpistmom I will send you a message.

  • Craig

Sorry all, I've been real busy lately making the Challenge coins for all the ships at Great Lakes and haven't been talking much here....

CRF - Let me make sure I understand you.  Are you saying he's already a Calif resident?  If so, and he's not stationed in Calif, then he doesn't pay Calif taxes (the last i looked).... Do tell, what state is he a residence from.

Rose - Welcome aboard.  I love CTM's, because I was one.  My son is a CTN and my nephew is a CTT (6yo).  We all have that CT blood in us....

  • Carolyn

Craig...have you made one for Ship 14 yet?
  • Craig

Yea, I just finished it....  The Arizona coin looks pretty cool.  When a ship & sailor pulls into Pearl Harbor they see views that the normal civilian don't.  They are 10 stories high floating by the USS Arizona, while the civilian is on the water and can't see the great mountain/hill views.

So I got the mountains and the USS Arizona memorial, along with the USS Arizona in the coin.  Man, it was really hard.

Here is the Carl Vinson pulling into port.  The sailor (and the coin I designed) are looking the other way (ie towards the camera), so you really can't get an idea of what the mountains/hills look like.

  • NavyMom4J

    Stunning picture!

  • Carolyn

Craig, what a gorgeous photo! I've seen the other 3 coins and this one will be amazing as well....when will we be able to order one?
  • Jojo(Rich'smom)S11D005

    GREAT PIC

  • cindyship11div168

Great photo Craig! And challenge coins?! What don't you do?  And do not say "windows" ;)

  • Craig

singing - Only within the last couple years have they allowed "A" school CTR's to go onto "C" school.  Like anything in the Navy, they are based on "needs of the Navy".  You just can't create a billet (a spot), that's not on the list.  Where I work, most of the CTR's are trained OJT (On the Job Training).

It is truly too early to know.  I know Lady Hamilton would know way more info on this than I do since her daughter is a senior "R" brancher.   Secondly, I will check the 2 "R" branchers I have on my website.  They have been talking quite a bit about the CTR school, so I think they are close to graduating.

Not sure if you realize this, but the fastest sailor to make Chief in recent times is an CTR.  This guy made Chief in less than 6 years, which it totally unheard of.  This is a nice read...

  • sunshine73

singing-my son is a CTR and went to C school in P'cola right after his A school. He was not the top of his class. His roommate was and didn't get a C school. His other friend was also at the top of her class and got a C school in Texas. I agree that it is needs of the Navy. He is now almost finished with a 2nd C school in Hawaii. He really enjoys his job even though he hasn't been doing it log.

  • Josh B's mom

Hello, I am new to this group. My son went to GL to bc on Aug 22. He will go to FL for A school for CTN... what should I expect from there? How long is school?

  • Tazdeana

JoshB's mom, we have alot in common.  My son also went to BC on Aug. 22 & will go to FL for A school for CTN (Which I have no clue what that is. lol)  I am really struggling with the no contact.  Do you know if they go straight to school after BC?

  • navymom3

JoshBsmom and Tazdeana welcome to the CT page. Here is a link to the CT jobs. You can click on the CTN one and it will tell you what they will be doing and how long school will be. Unless they end up going to C school. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/cryp.htm

Now when you are estimating time for school all will have some sort of wait time once they get to Pcola before they actually start there schooling. They do have plenty to do while waiting so don't think they will get to run free. There are several discussions above that may anwser some of your questions. As for the one about leaving for school right after BC is yes. They will fly out anytime from sat to monday depending on how full the flights are. Make sure you have joined the group for your son's PIR. If you don't know the date you should be getting for letter soon.

  • sammy1990

lol, clockard...I wish that board was more talkative but I think our sailor have us too scared to talk!
  • Josh B's mom

speaking of ships.... my son and I talked a lot before he left for boot camp about taking a ship if he had a chance. Is it really that slim of a chance? He plans on being a in for at least 20 years and you need a deployment for an ESWS pin (if I'm not mistaken) and you need an ESWS pin to make chief... well unless there is another way. Does anyone know how this works?

  • Josh B's mom

Tazdeana- I wish I knew how much time we will get with our SR for PIR weekend. I have written 8 letters and I ask that question in all of them. My son will be tired of that question for sure. It's nice to have someone in the same 'boat' no pun intended. LOL. I hope u hear from your SR soon. I know I am counting the seconds until I get the box and that first letter

  • harpist mom

Me too! I highly recommend the questionnaire.

  • cinder

You won't really know when they will fly out to school until PIR. Our son had told us he would fly out on saturday and he ended not leaving until Sunday. It cost us a small fortune to change everything . I would plan on staying until Sunday.
  • navymom3

JoshBsmom as for the time after PIR you get the the rest of friday until 7 or 8 depends on what time they are told to be back by. The rest of the weekend will be in the air until he gets his flight ticket. And unfortunately it is only a day or 2 before PIR and won't be able to tell you before you come. You just need to be flexible in case his flight isn't sunday.

  • shell (Ship 11, Div 167)

I would plan on staying until Sunday and just pray they get to stay that long. The letters to your recruit are like gold to them. My son received at least 2 letters every day, his younger brother and I wrote and mailed letters each day, that is what kept him going.

  • Craig

    Totally agree with Lady H.

There are many types of warfare pins, being a CT our community is usually the EIDWS (nerd warfare).  However, you get many CTT's that go on ships (cutlasses) or subs (dolphins) as their main pins.  But they can also earn the nerd warfare pin too.

Not getting a pin now is a career ender.  You are require to get it or your liberty will greatly be severed.

  • Craig

That one just cracks me up.  It's sooooo CT.....  it's only missing the pocket protector....

  • Tazdeana

Clockard, Thanks for the questionaire tip! I never would have thought of that.  That will so work for my son because he hates to write!

  • Josh B's mom

Thanks to everyone for answering my questions... this group is great!

  • CRF230dad

Craig, my son is still in P-Cola 2 weeks from finishing C school then to holding with all the other 30-40 CTs waiting for orders. He is still an official Calif. resident. but was think of changing before leaving to avoid the state taxes. He heard about the caveat (delay of benefits) on the GI Bill after separation if he goes back to Ca. for school. He said when the new budget comes through in Oct. orders should come fast & furious. Let's hope...

  • Josh B's mom

My neighbor called... the box arrived!!!! Now if my work day would end... It's always something standing in my way. My boy in a box awaits... mixed emotions swell.

  • Craig

Lady H - Boy do I remember slide rules!  In my family they were called "spanking tools".  My dad would actually show me how to use it, but I must say, I don't think I could do anything on it now.  I love how they put it into the design though, that had to be a CT that thought of that.  I like the brief case too....

CRF - I must admit I have never heard of that.  I would contact the VA to see what they say.  I can't see how California law would trump Federal law.  One thing for sure, if he has orders anywhere but California he would need to change it because Calif doesn't tax the military member out of that state.  One more thing is he cannot just change his residence to save taxes, the Navy doesn't allow that.  However, if he wants to change it because he wants to become a residence of another state, that's a different thing and is allowed. Hint, Hint, Wink, Wink....

Josh - We talk about everything here.  From "The box" to "Slide rules".  We just love having fun and passing different things along.  We all love "the box".  Pretty soon the letters will arrive.  After years on N4M's I have FINALLY come up with a solution!!! This is AWESOME! It works great! But PLEASE wait out by the mailbox and EXPLAIN exactly what it is to your mail carrier so you don't cause a heart attack. They may think it's a bomb, and then you'll get a visit from the Sheriff...again! LOL! Or maybe even the feds! Better put a local bail bondsman's number in you wallet just in case! LOL!

Now when the mailman opens the box, this transmitter sends a signal to the receiver in my house and a CHIME ALERT dings!!! YAY! Instant notification!!!  These are called "Driveway Alerts" and are sold at most home improvement stores. This was only $18.00 at Harbor Freight

See we talk about everything here just to keep it interesting....

  • CRF230dad

So word is that due to hurricane Issac the upper echelon decide to cancel this Friday as a liberty day and make it a normal instruction/duty day to make up for the Mon.-Wed. classes being cancelled. My son said Monday was perfectly fine and they could have held class. My son thinks they could easily make up those days with all the down time they often have. Do to the command's recent decision to revoking leave for anyone in student status it's safe to say this has had a significant negative impact on morale. With many sailors already approved and planning to leave on Friday for a 4 day weekend this move was another major blow to morale. I know that brass has bigger fish to fry but many sailors have already spent hundreds of dollars on air fare, hotels and other events on this much anticipated upcoming weekend. One quote says it all....

“Morale is the greatest single factor in successful wars”

    - Dwight David Eisenhower

  • cinder

My son told me the same thing but he is coming home late Friday and the airline did not charge him more for the change.
