Holy crap Lady H, that is sooooo funny......

Just switch the CTI and make him the CTN, and switch the CTA and make her the CTI and it would be dead on perfect.....The only problem is see then is I can't see the athletic tape on the CTT glasses.

  • glassdog

This is just to funny!  I have told my husband that my CTR is a combination of these characters for a long time!  Good one Lady H!

  • Tazdeana

Do they go straight to "A" school after Boot Camp?

  • navymom3

Courtney there wait times can be a couple weeks to months depending on when the new class starts. There is no way to tell until after they get there. But they do keep them very busy during the wait time.

Tazdeana yes they do go straight to school after BC. They fly out anytime from sat to monday. You will not know until PIR which day your sailor flies out. They don't get there tickets until a day or 2 before PIR. So no time to give you a heads up.

  • Tazdeana

    Navymom3,

Good thing my kid was a wrestler because I am used to the hurry up & wait system.  Thanks for the info.  I guess I just plan to spend the weekend & enjoy whatever I get - either time that includes him or time with just the hubby.  Win win either way! LOL

  • darrad(Ship09Div341)

Tazdeana..that's the same way I feel. We have reserved a room from Thurs to Sunday just in case he gets the whole weekend off but if he doesn't we will just go see what there is to see! Never been to Chicago.  Looks like our son's are graduating the same day...10/19/2012 right??

  • Joy

Just so you are aware...... we got to visit our son for only about 20 minutes after PIR before he had to get his gear and head for the airport.  So we headed for the airport too, got a gate pass, and visited with our son for about three hours before he left for Pensacola. I don't know if they still fly Sailors out on Friday or not. We knew he was grad and go, but we did not know he would have to fly out on Friday.  I packed a small black bag for him with his laptop, cell phone, chargers, some mesh shorts and a tee shirt.  I can't remember what else was in that bag.  It has been a while!

  • CRF230dad

HI all, Well after 15 months at P-Cola now my son just got orders today for Pearl Harbor HI. He's being attached to the USS Paul Hamilton DDG-60. This is his first duty station and deployment. His coming right from training command at Pensacola Fl. He literally just graduated this morning, got handed orders and has to report soon. He is was supposed to come home next week for leave and now that's out. I am really bummed out.He is freaking out because he has to get rid of all his stuff he has accumulated over that last 15 months. Will the Navy ship his stuff for him, including his car? When he gets there will he be assigned to barracks or on the ship? Is there some where he can store his things? Craig you may know the answer to some of these questions.

  • navymom3

CRF230dad yes they will ship his car and his stuff. Not sure about the living in the barracks or the ship. He needs to let them know he has stuff to ship. I am sure Craig or someone knows exactly where he needs to go to have it done. Also is his report date soon because the ship is heading out? That would be the reason why he doesn't get to take leave. Cause they normally just need to say they want to take leave before reporting.

  • cinder

Here's hoping my son gets orders soon.  Did your son want Hawaii?  Just seeing if they are giving them what they want.

  • Craig

Have him for to the House Hold Good  (HHG) office with his property.  He is allowed to ship 500 lbs express shipment immediately.  He can also use his regular HHG shipment if needed.  They will tell him everything.  Remember to, he can ship anything from his Home of Record to his new duty station too.  All he needs to do is give you Power of Attorney and you can get rid of all of his stuff.

    http://www.transcom.mil/dtr/part-iv/dtr_part_iv_app_k_1.pdf

Secondly, he can ship his car out of New Orleans and catch a flight from there.  Just work that with the travel office.  He needs to keep his taxi receipts because it will be very expensive and he will need to claim it.  Make sure he gets there on the weekend because they are closed and he can claim per-diem for the hotels and food.  He will not be charge leave either since he's "awaiting transportation".  Remember the gas tank needs to be less than 2 gallons when he drops it off...

  • Craig

CRF - He didn't put in for RAP duty?

  • CRF230dad

Thanks Craig, Do you know where I can find the POA form on-line? I forgot to ask him about RAP duty.

  • Craig

CRF - I posted all the POA here:

    http://www.navydep.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=214

The best bet is have him go to base legal and get a special POA for you to do that.  I always recommend sailors stay away from the general POA's because it gives too much access.  They have got to learn not to give too much access, even if you're his parent.  It's just not a wise habit to get into.

  • CRF230dad

Craig, Since my son got orders and is now attached to the boat does that mean he will be living on the ship when he arrives or will be assigned to barracks? Does it depend on the ships status, in port or deployed?

  • CRF230dad

I do agree on the limited access. My only concern is when he deploys in the event something happened (God forbid).

  • NavyMom4J

My Sailor is thinking of going into the enlisted to officers .. does anyone know what that takes - does he sign up for that when he reinlists for his next 4 years? Or do you do that while serving on your ship/shore duty??

  • NavyMom4J

CRF230dad:  When My son went from P'Cola to the USS Lake Champlain- he was on a barracks ship .... not on the actual ship he was assigned to. But his ship is in port getting alot of work done on it - almost a year now he has been assigned to this ship while it is getting battle ready - going out on aways and testing testing testing. But while it was not in commission, he was on a barracks ship- which hold sailors with many many beds on them.... but now that his ship is almost done, he has a rack on his ship.

  • calliecl

When my son deployed in January, he went to JAG and got a POA. We had to use it several times (sold his car, taxes, a stolen credit card and 2 bills issued in error). It was only good for one year from the date of issue but so glad we had it!
Now that he is back, he just got assigned to the barracks.
  • Craig

CRF - My nephew is in San Diego and when not deployed he lives is what he calls a barracks, I call it a hotel.  The building has a swimming pool on top, and they can have guest stay for up to 14 days.  Gals and Gays, intermix on the floors.  To me, it's almost like a college dorm or an apartment.  These sailors are treated as adults, which they should be.

Per the POA.  I have a general POA for my son and daughter, but I have seen before that the parents might sell off all their sailors items just to have money.  I've had parents that were crack addict, and prostitutes.  We are a reflection of our society, maybe this is why some young men or women decided to join the Navy, to get away from that stuff.  So, when in doubt, the sailor should protect themselves and only give a special POA, if they have any doubts.

NavyMom - Are you saying your son want to go through the "Seaman to Admiral" program (STA-21)?  or does he already have a degree and wants to get a direct commission?

Here is some info on the STA-21 program:

    http://www.sta-21.navy.mil/

  • Craig

Oops... Meant to say Guys, not Gays.....

"Not that there is anything wrong with that"  (From the TV show Seinfeld)...

  • calliecl

How sad that a parent or spouse would take advantage of a POA. Deployment must be hard enough but how awful to come back and find someone you trusted has let you down.

Not sure if this is true for all bases but my son said on his base there are several "barrack" buildings. If I got this right, some are run by the navy and some are run privately. The rules might be slightly different depending upon which building the sailor is assigned to.
  • CRF230dad

My son found out that his ship has it"s own barracks they are assigned to when not on deployment. What even better is they don't share them with anyone.

  • CRF230dad

Craig< I'm helping my son get some thing squared away before he goes. Is there a way to set a SDP before he deploys? He will be away when tax time comes. Should he file for an extension before he deploys or after he returns? How does he do this? Once he gets to his new command he may not have much time to take care of personal business.

  • navymom3

crf230dad when my son was out during tax time. They have someone there that can help them with there taxes. They can also file an extension online. Everyone on the ship is in the same boat. LOL

  • cinder

Just found out my son is going to Washington and will be on a carrier.  Not his first choice but is glad to be getting out of Florida and on with his job.  He said that there are so many orders flying out of the office that they will not let anyone trade, at least Washington is on the same coast as me.

  • cinder

I have already been looking at all the great places to visit and am looking forward to visiting him there when he gets back from deployment.
  • CRF230dad

The orders are coming fast & furious now at Corry. Everyone's shipping out.

  • CRF230dad

We are over the moon because my son is home on leave for 3 weeks (2 left to go) before he leaves for Pearl Harbor, his 1st duty station and then joins his ship already underway. Funny how the everyday mundane things now hold so much meaning. Just being around his is all we want. 8^)

  • cinder

CRFdad. So glad he got to have leave. My son will be driving home next week and my husband is flying out to help him drive. He gets to have 2 weeks home before he will continue his drive to Washington.
  • Gie

I know this must be a dumb question, is IT same as CTI?

  • Craig

    Gie - We love questions.

IT is Information Information Technician.  In the old days they were called Radiomen (RM).  Now with computers they are called ITs.  They send out messages from the ship.

CTI - Cryptologic Technician Interpretive. These guys are the ones that speak and understand the different languages.  They are the Rosetta Stone's (language) people of the Navy.

  • navymom3

Gie no IT is not the same as CTI. CTI is a linguist. IT is an information systems tech.

  • Gie

Thanks, Craig and Navymom3. My daughter had to re-classify from CTN to IT, because they said CTN is overmanned. So is there a different group here for IT?
  • proudmom

Craig with CTN being overmanned now what will that mean for our sailors that may be graduating now and how will it affect them in the future as far as reenlistments and such..
  • Krspies - CTN Mom

Are there any of you that actually live in Pensacola?  I am wanting to send my son a meal that he always enjoyed at home   I will pay for everything and provide the recipe if someone living in Pensacola will cook it and deliver it to him in a reheatable container.   If you are willing to help me out please let me know.

  • navymom3

Krspies I know that Robin on sailor in Pcola lives there. My son has a friend that lives there. She might be interested. I can ask her if you want. What did you want her to make? She does have a sailor BF.

  • Craig

All - CTN's are way overmanned.  The detailer had adjusted for this years ago and limited the # of CTN's entering into the rating, however, the Government drastically reduce that amount even lower that what was expected.  Which puts all the advancements on reduced amounts.

This is actually what happened to my rating (CTM) when I was in.  Which I am extremely grateful.  It allowed me early retirement and I made out soooo well.  It allowed senior people to get out, to enable those coming up the system an opportunity to advance.  Because so many senior people got out, then there was a shortage of CTM's and they had to pay bonuses to keep them in.  Remember CTN's still do pay a bonus for zone "B" reenlistments, which is rare in today's Navy for all the ratings.

So, what may seem like a bad thing is actually good in the long run (ie 2 years).  If your CTN is a good CTN, then stick it out.  This is only a bump in the road (in my opinion).  By the time the lower "high year tenure" clicks in, and those that fail the PRT get their 3 strikes,  and those that get out because there is more money to be made in the civilian world as a CTN, then this rating will have a shortage.

    http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=68125

Again, it's just my opinion.  (I have to say that just is case I'm wrong ~ha).

Gie - Here is where you can find the other rating groups here at N4M's:

    http://www.navyformoms.com/forum/topics/groups-listed-by-navy-job

Remember, because the Navy broke their contract by not allowing her to remain a CTN, then she could request to be separated.  The Navy isn't for everyone, and if they have already processed her SBI security access, then it might not be a bad thing to get out.  She will already have the education and VA benefits.  It's something to consider.  In my opinion ~ha.

  • Krspies - CTN Mom

Navymom3,  I am needing someone to make my son some frito boats.  it's pretty simple, a can of ranch style beans, 1/2 pound of ground beef, small can of tomato sauce and a package of chili powder.  serve with shredded cheddar cheese and fritos.

I would greatly appreciate if you ask your friend if she would do that for me.  I will gladly pay her. and as I mentioned I will pay for all the ingredients as well.

  • harpist mom

Craig, My son is in his last few weeks of A school for CTMs and will be stationed in Kunia Oahu. Do you know anything about that location? He has been doing well in school and wanted ship duty.

  • proudmom

Craig what is a zone B reenlistment?
  • Gie

Craig...thank you so much for all the informations. They gave her a choice of jobs and she picked IT. Have a good day.
  • Muschee

Krispies, I would be happy to make the Frito Boats if you can wait until December. Perhaps someone will be able to help you out sooner. I will be in P'cola for the month of December, so let me know if I can be of assistance.

  • navymom3

proudmom the zones on the reenlistment bonus chart is zone a for 1st time, zone b 2 time then zone c for the rest.  My son already explained the zones to me when I was looking stuff up for his brother. If I am not right let me know Craig.

Krspies my sons friend Kayla said she would do it. I will pm you her email.

  • Craig

Man, I know I'm going to confuse someone (probably all of you) about how to figure out bonus and what the zone levels mean.  But I'm going to post this anyways because I think if you read it, you will slowly understand it....

Here is what I wrote for my website a couple years ago for the active duty guys I work with.

    SRB_Reenlistment_Bonus-10_9_12.doc

As some of you know, I've really busy designing the challenge coins for the sailors in boot camp.  It actually has taken up about 3 months of my time.  The company that sells them has also been hounding me to get the story about them completed, so I don't really have much time to update the different things I usually post (like the attached SRB info), so all I did is update the links. (yes Clockard I'm still doing links -ha).....

Between the coin thing, and still doing my normal job I've been so busy.  In fact, I just got back 2 days ago from Fort Gordon Georgia.  Now I've got to see my sons job at both Kunia and Fort Gordon, which was cool.

I'm sure you guys will slowly absorb the sbi info....

singingbird - CTR are needed in the civilian world and they make good money.  My company hires a bunch of CTR's.  That rating will slowly get manned.  But I don't think it will be overmanned like CTN is now.  Too many people get out after their 1st term and use the SBI access for opportunities in the civilian world.

As far as the ship, as strange as it is, he will also do the job as the old CTO's (which has gone away) in sending out SBI message traffic.  What was suppose to happen is the IT rating was suppose to pick up those CTO's job however, on most ships the CTR's end up doing it since they don't teach how to process true SBI traffic in IT school.  So this will make him more valuable in the civilain world because now he will know the CTR and CTO jobs.  Which is a good thing.

    Harpist -

Kunia is cool.  He'll have no problem moving off base, the barracks are so full that E2 are allowed to move off...

Here is a picture of where he'll be working...

It's funny because everytime I look at the Kunia picture it just cracks me up.  If you belong to the base security force your duty is soooo much fun.  The reason? The area above the building is now the locals "Lovers Lane".  Since that area is considered part of the base, the base security is always sneaking up on them just like Joey Greco does on the t.v. show Cheaters....  I actually had a business trip to Kunia and man, the stories these sailors told me were really funny.  (as Paul Harvey said, now you know the rest of the story) ~ha

  • Krspies - CTN Mom

Muschee I appreciate the offer but he will be coming home on leave sometime around Thanksgiving so if I can't get it to him by then I'll just make him some while he's here.  If he doesn't come home and I haven't sent him frito boats by then I will definitely look you up on that.  thank you.

  • navymom3

singingbird the leave amount depends on how much they have earned. They earn 2.5 days per month. That is starting when they left for BC. So he could do both. Now they will let them go in the hole a little if needed. Now he will need to tell them he wants leave after c school and before going to his first duty station. Has he got orders yet. My son was home about 3 1/2 weeks after c school but he was headed to Japan.

  • Craig

singingbird - He needs to request RAP duty, then he'll get both...

RAP (Recruiting Assistance leave Program) - MILPERSMAN 1050-220 info:

RAP duty allows sailors to come home (at their expense) and working at their former recruiting station.  The benefit is they are not changed leave (vacation) for 5 days while home.

Here again is a copy of the form they will receive once they complete RAP duty, along with the official instruction.

    rap_duty_form_blank.jpg

    RAP_Duty_Official_Instruction

  • navymom3

singingbird rap leave is only between c school and duty station. Do you think he is going straight to his ship after c school. Most get to come home before reporting to the ship. Unless he is doing a change of rate and has been in for a while. Then he might go right to the ship. Or if the ship is leaving right after he finishes c school and needs to get there to get situated.

  • Craig

singing - RAP duty cannot be used during Christmas.  However, he can take normal leave for Christmas, and then use RAP duty in February.

He needs to talk to whomever is calling the detailer for him and make dang sure they understand he wants to take RAP duty.  Like navymom says, you can only use RAP duty between "A" or "C" school but before you check into your duty station.   RAP duty is cool....
