Hey Craig when does the list come out if you passed the advnacement test?

  • navymom3

Cinder my older son said they come out sometime the end of Nov. Well he actually said around his brothers birthday but that is the end of Nov. LOL Now wouldn't that be a great birthday present to pass for my sailor to make rank advancement.

  • Craig

Cinder - It comes out about 2 weeks before the advancement results.  The actual results usually come out days before Thanksgiving.  Keep checking this website for info:

Hey all - Hey guys wanted to let you know some interesting news.

I haven't been on much with my daughter going to boot camp, running my own website, and designing the Navy boot camp challenge coins.

The company I have been designing the Navy boot camp challenge coins for has ask that I become a partner.   Now that I have only one more challenge coin to complete, ship-4, and after much consideration,  I have decided to become part of their our company.  I think this will really compliment my own website.

    Woo-hoo....  Go Navy!!!

  • navymom3

Congrats Craig! Can't wait to see the coins you have created.

  • tehlilone (Ship 12 Div 371)

Congrats Craig! I got the coin for Ship 12 as my SR's present and it's awesome!

  • Craig

tehlilone - glad you liked it.  The Triton was the very 1st one I made.  My son was on that ship, and my thought was if the coin company went bankrupted, then at least I would have that coin for my son.

Since we are talking about it, here is a link to the various coins I made so far, http://www.ebay.com/sch/pirgifts/m.html

Ship 13 the USS Shields gets released in 2 weeks... Woo-hoo....

  • TwoForTheNavy

I bought the USS Kearsarge for my son whose PIR was 10/12/12, he loved it!
  • CRF230dad

Haven't posted here in a long time. My son is deployed on the USS Paul Hamilton DDG60 out of Pearl Harbor. Finally doing his job after 18 months at P-Cola. He is doing great with his new ship life. It's a longer deployment than usual, 10 months. Craig my son (CTT) will sit for his PO2 advancement test in March. I remember a lot of really practical test study information of yours I once came across but for the life of me I cannot find it again. Any tips or resources you can offer but be greatly appreciated. The ships internet is not so good most of the time so anything I could mail him or email (HTML only) would be good because I don't know that he can download anything on their network. Thanks and Happy Veteran's day and thank you for your service!

  • CRF230dad

cinder what ship did your son get attached to? Has he shipped out yet? Mine's on the USS Paul Hamilton DDG60 a destroyer. He already underway 2+ weeks now. He likes it and is doing well. He said his shop (the CT guys) are cool and his senoir enlisted and officers are solid.

  • Craig

CRF230 - wow, I posted that study stuff a long time ago.  My hard drive is just filled with all types of cool stuff and I can't find that section yet....

However, I did find this for your son.  He will really needs to get the frequency spectrums figured out for his test.  They are extremely hard to learn, thus why I made this for my guys.  This is only for CTR, CTT, and CTM's...

    CRF230 - Found another one.

This is what every sailor needs to know. It's the Standard Subject Identification Codes (SSIC).  It applies to all ratings

Hi Guys,  Just an update on my son he just got to the Stennis CVN74 a few days ago and is just getting his bearings.  He said being on a ship is interesting.  I bought him one the bunk curtains and he already has it up.

My son and his buddys told me they took the test but are sure that they did not pass.  They felt that they needed to spend time being on a ship and doing their jobs, but were glad they took it for practice.

Craig tip #2 I sent to my son when he was in ATT class and the instructor also gave it to them.  They all thought it was pretty funny.

  • harpist mom

Craig, I just sent you a friend request - would like to discuss an issue with you privately.

  • Craig

CTN 1st class only 12.88%, that sucks....

  • DocRenee

Craig, what does that mean? CTN? Did a group take a test? My son is in boot camp then due to go to Monterey.

  • Craig

Doc - This really doesn't have much to do with boot camp.  It's for those that have enough time in to take the advancement test.  Every Mar and Sept sailors go up for advancement, if they are eligible.  About 2 months later (ie Nov) everyone gets hyped up to see if they got a promotion or not.

There are the following ratings for Cryptology:

CTI  <--- This is your son

CTN <--- This is my son

CTM  <--- This is what I retire as

    CTT

    CTR

In about 1 year from now, you will be searching all the Navy areas to see what the quotas are.  For 1st class (E-6) anything above 20% is really good.  My son is a CTN and 12.88% is not really good at all.  They will start letting everyone know who made it or not within the next couple days (probably starting tomorrow)...

  • Craig

Doc - Actually, I think this will help you a lot more to let you know what all the different jobs CT's do.  It's up above in the discussion area.  Here is a quick

    link to it:

  • DocRenee

Craig, I really appreciate your information. Very helpful. I had no clue. I have a much better picture now. You are very resourceful. Thanks a million!

    Doc

  • Craig

Come on guys... I know we have newbies in the house...

Come and ask your questions....  We love answering questions....

  • DocRenee

Craig, you have been very helpful and I'm still getting used to all this stuff. If my son is in boot camp and is E-3, does he test for E=4 and if so when? If not, about when would he qualify for E-4? I admit freely I am a newbie. My son leaves boot camp 12-20. Doc Renee

  • Craig

Doc - I hope he doesn't leave boot camp on Dec 20th because PIR is Dec 21st. He'll be UA (Unauthorized Absences)  (in civilian terms AWOL)  j/k

As a CTI, he won't take the test of E4, he will automatically get it

    Read para 010205 here:

    http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/publications/Directives/1130_8J_VOL%20IV_P...

  • DocRenee

You both have been so helpful. This is all new to me. Craig, you are correct. My typo as he leaves boot camp Dec. 21st and arrives (after a few days at home) in Monterey Dec. 30th. He has a bachelor's degree and Eagle Scout so that helped. He also speaks several languages and our family enjoys learning new languages. I am delighted about this opportunity for him. Lady Hamilton, thanks for your help and I agree that daily performance is always critical. Craig, you are a virtual library of resources! Thanks so much.

One more thing: what about housing at Monterey? He is married and will soon want his wife to join him there. Is base housing for married folks limited? I know how much housing costs are here in Calif. and Monterey is not exception. So how available are off campus apartments which are still accessible to the base?

    Again thanks, Doc

  • Craig

Dang Lady H, you beat me by 3:15 minutes.  ~ha

What the heck are you doing up now?  I thought I was the only night owl here....

For some reason this section has been quite for a while.  We need to stir the pot and get some talking going on....

Just think, one more week before the big game.....Go Tavy!

  • DocRenee

BTW Lady Hamilton, thanks for sharing your redacted literature. Helpful to see! Doc

  • Craig

Doc, you may want to ask Dee over in the CTI group on that. She have the 411 on the Monterey stuff.

Just curious about the "several languages".  If he has some unique ones, then he could still qualify for the HLRP program (even as a CTI).  He could earn an extra $500 per month if they need him.   Read the same manual, but look at para 030201.    I got a guy in with that program.  He never had to use the language, but yet got paid $500 a month just knowing it.  Pretty cool deal..

  • DocRenee

Craig, I am hesitant to state any languages on this site but I did read the section. Very interesting. Don't know what those languages are but we speak 4 languages in our home. Absolutely love to learn about languages and other cultures. Thanks for this information.

I will follow up on the CTI group when I get a chance. Gotta get some sleep night owls! Doc

  • Muschee

Sunday's Pensacola News Journal had an intersting article on "The Spy Museum" at Corry. You can find it on: pnj.com (History of espionage declassified at Corry Station spy museum) I haven't had the opportunity to visit yet, but plan to go very soon.

My sailor, a CTT living at Corry for about a year was unaware of the museum!

  • Muschee

Singing Bird, I just read a bit about Callimahos on Wikipedia...fascinating life! I will look for his story in the museum. Thanks for sharing.

  • navymom3

I think the CT rate all have the push button rank advancement. They still have to spend there time in each rank but don:t have to take the test until E5. My CTM came out of school a e3 but got that for finishing top of class. Then he got e4 after he got to his 1st duty station and completed a few things. It took a couple months is all. He was also able to take the E5 test in Sept. which was only a 6 month wait. He did pass the test but didn't get promoted. My older son said that most that got promoted this time were sailors who had taken the test 3 times already.

  • DocRenee

Lady Hamilton, you are a treasure trove of knowledge. Very helpful information for newbies! Doc Renee

  • Craig

Lady H - I'm not 100% positive, since I haven't read the rules in a while, but the reason you only see a couple CTI's making E-4 is because those are reservist (who are on active duty) or CTI's that have been to Captain's Mast.

Yea, I know what you're thinking, how could they go to Captain's Mast and still be a CTI?  The reason is it's probably some minor charge.  The CO thinks he can get the young sailors attention by still allowing them to stay, but letting them know that they're luckly to continue in that rating.

Just a fyi, this is the book the CO pulls out prior to any Captain's Mast.  j/k

  • Craig

Forgot to add... The CTT's that you see listed are the 4 year Operators, not the 6 year Technicians.  The 4 year operators are not part of the Advanced Electronic Field (AEF) or the Advanced Technical Field (ATF).  So they don't get the advanced promotions.

One thing on the automatic promotion to E-4, you MUST have your Time in Rate  (TIR) in for that.  You don't take a test, but you still have to meet the time requirement.

  • darrad(Ship09Div341)

My sailor is coming home for xmas (Houston), he couldn't leave until 6:30pm and prices were outrageous! Had to pay over $600. And last time I checked it had gone up to $1300!

  • cinder

Congrats Lady Hamilton, my son is on the Stennis based out of Bremerton Washington.  It sure is nice when life comes together.

  • Rose

Hello, Are there any CTN families out there with their Sailor at Fort Meade? My son just got there and I'm looking for some support.

    Thank you!

  • proudmom

Hi Rose my son is a CTN and he is stationed at Fort Meade. He has only been there a little over a month. He is home on Christmas leave right now.

Congratulations to the crew of the USS Lake Champlain- with passing final inspections - the ship is Battle Ready now after a long time in port and testings at sea after it was refurbished.  My CTT sailor just let me know it is ready now for deployment- whoo hooo-

  • NavyMom4J

Also- Sailor is coming home for New Years- with his wife- they are expecting their first baby - my first grandchild! lots to be thankful for.

  • CTmomof3

I asked this in another group and will also ask here.  My son seems to be having an issue receiving pkgs or anything priority mail.  They get "lost".  I mailed very important papers to him overnight delivery with  tracking.  Was delivered to the base PO on Monday and he has yet to get it.  Seems NIOC mailroom can't find it.  Needless to say I'm furious.  I've asked the US postal service to look into it but still no answer.  I"m concerned if I pursue this it may have a negative "affect" on him but on the other hand someone should know things are being "lost ie stolen"  Any suggestions?  It's pretty sad when you can't trust the mail handlers.

CTmomof3 I sent my son a package UPS next day and they received it but he didn't get it for 2 weeks. He was told only postal no UPS and Fed ex and they contact him when the package is available for him. He said he heard there are big issues with thing getting lost in the mailroom so he asked me not to send too many packages. They claim it has to do with security purposes that is why it takes so long.
  • proudmom

Does anyone know if a sailor is offered a specific opportunity but is not sure that is the direction he wants his navy career to go and turns it down, will that leave a black mark on his record? Will he ever possibly get this chance again should he change his mind? My sailor is really wrestling with a decision he needs to make when he returns to base after the holidays. I am just not sure what advice I can give him.
  • sammy1990

mail....my sailor asked not to have things sent to him. says they are delivered to his duty station and shuffled from desk to desk until it finds him on shift. says it takes a long time.
