This is sad that our kids can't get mail.  The first letter i overnighted ( had not choice)  a month ago I had called the main base post office to see if NIOC gets Sat delivery. No, but was told he could go pick it up before Noon.  He did but was given a hard time as he wasn't ...authorized...to pick up Navy mail...even though it was his own. So this time he didn't try and look what happens...MIA. While pursuing this...lost...letter this week the comment was made by 2 different people...you didn't send it signature required...um..didn't think I needed to but I guess that's what they're saying..  Guess if I read between the lines..if you want to make sure stuff is received send signature required as that person will be held accountable if it gets lost.

Hi Ladies, my son had several packages that where marked as arrived although he had not received a "slip" saying that he had packages. He finally just went to the mail person and told them that he had several that should be there. It worked, they actually went and looked for them and gave them to him today. I guess they were in the Christmas spirit? Couldn't hurt for your sailors to ask, I guess.

  • Scouter Mom

I have a very different question.....it's about difficulty with returning from leave due to the pending snow/rain/wind storms....my son (future SR) is driving with his SR girlfriend to Norfolk, Va. They were planning on leaving in plenty of time, the 26th, for her to report to duty 28th at 7am...but now.....enter this huge storm that cuts across their path, no matter whether they take the southern or northern route from Missouri to Virginia.....arggghhhh....Any suggestions??? Ideas?? Feedback??? What happens if she can't RTD in time???

  • Craig

Today we gather with family and friends to share laughter and the make new Christmas memories. Please remember though for many families, whose loved ones serve in the Armed Forces, this year's Christmas celebration will not be complete. A familiar voice will not be heard and a chair at the table will remain empty because, they have someone far from home.

So, as those of us who are blessed to be with our families, let us remember in our prayers the homes that have an empty chair at the table and also offer a special prayer of thanks and ask God’s Blessings for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, whose service and sacrifice will make the world a better and safer place. A very special prayer dear God, for those homes that have an empty chair that will forever remain vacant, may their sacrifice not have been in vain.

    Merry Christmas To All

singingbird - Even though it not very active, you can get a message to them at their official Facebook account:

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Center-for-Information-Dominance-Corr...

Aurie's - When that time comes and the snow storm hits, she can call her command and let them know she is snowed in.  She will ask for an extension of her leave to enable her to get the VA.  You can't call now because what they'll say is "start driving now".  You want to wait until the snow hits, then they can verify it, and allow the extension of leave.  The phone number should be on her orders, but, I'd start looking now for the phone number to her commands quarterdeck.

If they don't approve the extension of leave, she could be charged with being UA.  However, this rarely ever happens, especially it's it beyond their control (weather). It would be totally bad press for the Navy, especially when the can't even use her because of the holidays (she's not trained).  Don't worry, they will approve it if it's beyond her control.

I want to thank everyone on this site for helping me the past few months with so many questions. Craig, you have been especially helpful and I appreciate your exhortation to us. My son is home for a few days and due in Monterey on the 30th. He is doing very well and actually enjoyed Great Lakes. Used his educational skills to help other SRs.

I hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas and entire holiday season. I feel I have made some new friends here I will keep for a long time. And I great cherish that.

  • Scouter Mom

Thanks Craig! Appreciate the feedback, and will pass it on the them....

  • Craig

singingbird - Just message them.  It's their official website.  Just like N4M here, they normally frown upon people posting last names, but they have exceptions too. Read here:

  • Craig

btw: Here is the Navy Social Media Handbook for everyone.  It has a lot of info that might help in understating what OPSEC is, and what it isn't....

  • Linda Rae

My son just graduated from boot camp and is reporting to CTR school (Corry Station) this weekend. He has requested a sponsorer from the CID site but he doesn't know if he'll get a response over the holiday period. That said, what should he bring - should not bring?  Also, will he be able to be assigned to barracks or is he going to have to get a hotel (since it's during the holiday break)?  Is there a place at Corry Station where he can buy laundry detergent, an iron, etc.?  Any info or website that he should check will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • proudmom

Linda my son just graduated from Corry in Oct. They should assign him to a room and there is a small nex on corry and a larger one right outside of Corry both in walking distance. Here is a group you can get more information http://www.navyformoms.com/group/sailorsinpensicolaflforaschool If you have any more questions would be glad to help if I can, you can PM me.
  • Craig

Linda - the Navy Exchange connects to Corry.  It's on the same property.  It's the biggest in that area.  If he needs small stuff, then there is a mini-mart (kind of a 7/11 store) close to the barracks.  All of his shipmates will show him this stuff.  He will know it all too well also since he will be on phase one liberty.

Bring a laptop computer.  Buy a real cheap Acer or whatever (the cheapest) at Best Buy.  Don't buy it at the exchange.  They are really expensive.  Everyone thinks that because you can buy it tax free it will be cheaper, its not.  You'll actually spend more money. Remember, the rooms are small and he only has one locker and one desk.

proudmom - Is that group good now?  They didn't have a clue about Corry Station and were providing wrong info.  I called them out and was banned.  They are good with general Pensacola info, but with Corry, they haven't a clue.  It's the secret squirrel stuff that people can't understand....

  • NavyMom4J

Craig- My CTT is home on leave here in Denver until Jan 11th.  He would love to meet you and see if you could give him a tour over there..he has all the necessary clearance- at one point you offered to do that for him- was a while back.  He wants to get shore leave and Denver as his next tour when he re ups... Can you let me know if you can do this for him - and how we can get in touch for this?

  • Craig

NavyMom4J - This is kind of short notice.  I don't think this will happen this time.  However, next time he plans to be home, have him contact his SSO and have them send his "tickets" to my building, Once the tickets are passed, then I can give him a tour he'll always remember.  One week isn't enough time to process the paperwork.

I just posted in the Colorado section that we should all have a get together for lunch or dinner.

  • NavyMom4J

Thanks Craig- I thought it was short notice too- will let him know that. This did not come up until he was actually home. Loving having him here - !!!!

  • jangles

Hey CTI Moms, any in Washington State who can get together for a lunch or something?

  • Ducky

Looks like  alot of CT in Colorado!

  • jangles

Thank you Dee, I did join this group, Thanks for mentioning it.

  • Craig

Ducky - Their are a lot of CT's.  Remember the Aurora shooting?  That was a CTR3 (IDW) ...  It's called NIOC Denver.

  • Ducky

Craig, yes hard to forget the Aurora shooting, my son had gone to that theater just two days before, I have a co-worker whose daughter worked there and a friend's daughter that was there.  I had heard about someone from the base being a victim....I'm sorry to hear it was a CTR.  I'll have to learn more about NIOC.

  • Craig

Dee -  Is this your house being a Seattle Seahawks fan? If it is, that's what I'm talking about... j/k, but I do love this house.... However, Denver will be going to the SuperBowl....

  • jangles

Go Seahawks!!!!!! I know there is another Seahawk fan in Monterey, just starting school, my Sailor.:)

  • Ducky

Broncos all the way!  Going to the playoff game next weekend! WOOT WOOT!

  • navymom3

I have to share this especially for Craig! Here is my son getting his EIDWS pin. We are so proud of him and what he has accomplished in 2 years.

  • Craig

Woo-hoo!  That is fantastic!!!  He now gets to put the (IDW) after his rating.

    Example:  CTM2(IDW), CTN3(IDW), CTT1(IDW)

I have a copy of the book.  Geez, these guys have to know a lot....  He will always remember this day...

Congrats to him, and to you!

  • cinder

Very nice your son has done an amazing job congrats.

  • cinder

    Hi Craig,

Are still there?  We may get the opportunity to go on a tiger Cruise and my understanding is that you get to see what your kids do but with our son being a CTT what will we do all day long?

  • Scouter Mom

I'm new to this...what's a tiger cruise?? My son won't be at P'Cola until April...

  • calliecl

Cinder - my son is a CTT too and my husband had the opportunity to go on a tiger cruise this past September. He said it was an amazing experience and so glad he had the chance to go. He was able to spend a great deal of time with my son on the cruise and learned a lot about what he does on the ship.
  • cinder

Good to know thanks all for the info. We are excited about going and the Stennis is an amazing carrier.
  • Scouter Mom

thanks for all the Tiger Cruise info! :)))) I love the ocean!!

  • cinder

Jeremy's mom get use to not knowing he is signed up to be a spook and will not be able to tell you what he does.  we all want to know what are kids do so it does take time adjusting to that.

  • cinder

Clockard you are right.  Pretty much I just check to see how he is doing on qualifications, if he likes what he does, likes the people he works with etc.

  • sunshine73

You can go on you tube and search for the "NSA Americas Cyber Secrets" and they explain a lot and you can see some of the equipment. Very cool videos.

  • BTsmom

LadyHamilton-Love the quote! Yeah I forgot and asked my Sailor what she did all day yesterday and got the "can't really talk about it" answer. I remembered and texted back-"and the secrets begin". Hubby and fil was in the same situations so it comes from her father! hahaha As long as I continue to hear from her when I think I should I will be okay with not knowing. Ignorance is bliss! I know she's safe.

  • BTsmom

I'm wondering if I should delete the ship and division from my user name now?

  • navymom3

BTsmom the ship and division you have in your name is just the division he was in at bootcamp, That does not tell anyone anything about his job. They don't divide sailor by job into the same ship at BC.

When I ask mine how is work going I usually get busy, really busy or we are swamped with work. And I am good with that. And he still loves it.

  • Julia

My son started CTR classes about 2 weeks ago. Does anyone know how many weeks? Is there a graduation to attend or is it onward? Thanks so much. Ever since classes started I stopped hearing from him.
  • Craig

    Jeremy's -

I know some of you have asked about "C" schools that could be offered to your sailors.  Let me explain and give you a little background about what a "C" school is.  Lets say you want to learn to be an auto mechanic, that school would be considered an "A" school.  You are learning the basics.  Now suppose you want to be an auto mechanic that specializes on Corvettes.  Well you still need the basics, but now you need another school to learn Corvettes.  That school would be like a "C" school because now your not just a plain old auto mechanic, now you are a specialist.

Same as the Navy.  You learn the basics in "A" school, then you go to a "C" school to learn a special skill.  When you go to a "C" school, you are assigned a Navy Enlisted Code (NEC) that tells everyone what your specialty is.  To find all the schools offered, you can go to this link:

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/nec/NECOSVolII/Docu...

To give you an example how this works, lets use CTT for an example.  Use the find button and search on CTT.  Keep hitting the find button and you will get to the 1st section for CTT which is 1702.  CTT's have several in the 1700 area.  Then the next group is the 9100 group.  You can even see that CTT's are doing OS, ET, and other rating jobs.  These NEC number are always listed in numerical order.

  • Craig

singingbird - You can request your fathers records through the National Archives.  I requested my dads and was surprised to find out he only had a GED.  No wonder why he bitched me out for not getting good grades in school ~ha

    Just go to this link:

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Hey there everyone!  I just wanted to brag about one of our CTT's.  This is my son on his deployment, receiving a Captain's coin from Captain Reis of the USS John C. Stennis, CVN 74.  He has been assigned to the aircraft carrier since March, 2012.  The ship was deployed in September 2012 and is still for a few more months.  My son has also received a Blue Jacket Award and was also Sailor of the Month in December.   He was awarded this coin for being named Sailor of the Week and I've been told it is quite an honor to receive the coin from the Caption for a job well done.  The Captain also allowed him to steer the ship and sit in the Captain's seat, while he was on the bridge.  He said it was a really cool perspective being up there while the planes were landing and taking off on the deck.  So, just a short time ago, my son was in Corry Station and he is doing just awesome right now.  :)  (Oh and he says the mustache is only temporary as they are all growing them in his mod until one of his buddies leaves the ship, lol)

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

    Oops* Captain,

  • harpist mom

    Betsy,

Congratulations! You must be a great mom to have raised such a wonderful son. You deserve to be proud of him. Wishing him all the best in his Navy career!

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Thank you, I just thought it would be nice to share, since I know it's nice to hear that there is also life outside of Corry Station, lol.

  • ProundSailorMom

I have a couple of questions.  My sons PIR date is 3/8/13 afterwards he is to head to Pensacola for A school. How many weeks is that and during that time should they have a vechicle?

  • harpist mom

My son's PIR was on 3/9/12, and he went to Pensacola immediately for A school. He was initially stationed at the Naval Air Station and he did not "class up" for the first class until the end of May. He was given various office jobs until he began the first course. He finished the first course around the first of July and missed the cutoff on the second course at Corry Station because his last name began with a letter at the end of the alphabet (the class filled up before his name came up). He had more office jobs in July and transferred to Corry Station in mid-August for the second course, which he completed the first of November.

He did have a car while he was there although he was required to have a buddy to go offbase while at the NAS so he was unable to leave at those times when he could not find a buddy. Corry Station's rules were a lot looser. From a personal standpoint, I wish they had been more strict there, but I have heard that things have "tightened up" recently, which is good.

  • ProundSailorMom

Oh my so he could be there awhile.  He said he would be there for 9 months but I thought that was a bit long.  I wasn't sure about the car and know that there should be no reason to leave the base actually but being there that long then perhaps he may want to leave.

  • harpist mom

Frankly, I wish the current rules had been in place when my son was at Corry. Even though he is also in his mid-twenties, an unfortunate decision he made while he was there might have been averted.

  • ProundSailorMom

Exactly. I hope things are strict my son is 18a and still needs rules. If there is a need to get off base it will need to be with "buddys".
  • ProundSailorMom

I worry about him and only being 18. He would love to have his car but funny as it sounds it would be dangerous off base. He needs rules and limits.
