Ducky - Their are a lot of CT's. Remember the Aurora shooting? That was a CTR3 (IDW) ... It's called NIOC Denver.

Craig, yes hard to forget the Aurora shooting, my son had gone to that theater just two days before, I have a co-worker whose daughter worked there and a friend's daughter that was there. I had heard about someone from the base being a victim....I'm sorry to hear it was a CTR. I'll have to learn more about NIOC.

Clockard you are right. Pretty much I just check to see how he is doing on qualifications, if he likes what he does, likes the people he works with etc.

You can go on you tube and search for the "NSA Americas Cyber Secrets" and they explain a lot and you can see some of the equipment. Very cool videos.

LadyHamilton-Love the quote! Yeah I forgot and asked my Sailor what she did all day yesterday and got the "can't really talk about it" answer. I remembered and texted back-"and the secrets begin". Hubby and fil was in the same situations so it comes from her father! hahaha As long as I continue to hear from her when I think I should I will be okay with not knowing. Ignorance is bliss! I know she's safe.

I'm wondering if I should delete the ship and division from my user name now?
Jan 24, 2013
navymom3
BTsmom the ship and division you have in your name is just the division he was in at bootcamp, That does not tell anyone anything about his job. They don't divide sailor by job into the same ship at BC.
When I ask mine how is work going I usually get busy, really busy or we are swamped with work. And I am good with that. And he still loves it.

Jeremy's -
I know some of you have asked about "C" schools that could be offered to your sailors. Let me explain and give you a little background about what a "C" school is. Lets say you want to learn to be an auto mechanic, that school would be considered an "A" school. You are learning the basics. Now suppose you want to be an auto mechanic that specializes on Corvettes. Well you still need the basics, but now you need another school to learn Corvettes. That school would be like a "C" school because now your not just a plain old auto mechanic, now you are a specialist.
Same as the Navy. You learn the basics in "A" school, then you go to a "C" school to learn a special skill. When you go to a "C" school, you are assigned a Navy Enlisted Code (NEC) that tells everyone what your specialty is. To find all the schools offered, you can go to this link:
http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/nec/NECOSVolII/Docu...
To give you an example how this works, lets use CTT for an example. Use the find button and search on CTT. Keep hitting the find button and you will get to the 1st section for CTT which is 1702. CTT's have several in the 1700 area. Then the next group is the 9100 group. You can even see that CTT's are doing OS, ET, and other rating jobs. These NEC number are always listed in numerical order.

singingbird - You can request your fathers records through the National Archives. I requested my dads and was surprised to find out he only had a GED. No wonder why he bitched me out for not getting good grades in school ~ha

Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor
Hey there everyone! I just wanted to brag about one of our CTT's. This is my son on his deployment, receiving a Captain's coin from Captain Reis of the USS John C. Stennis, CVN 74. He has been assigned to the aircraft carrier since March, 2012. The ship was deployed in September 2012 and is still for a few more months. My son has also received a Blue Jacket Award and was also Sailor of the Month in December. He was awarded this coin for being named Sailor of the Week and I've been told it is quite an honor to receive the coin from the Caption for a job well done. The Captain also allowed him to steer the ship and sit in the Captain's seat, while he was on the bridge. He said it was a really cool perspective being up there while the planes were landing and taking off on the deck. So, just a short time ago, my son was in Corry Station and he is doing just awesome right now. :) (Oh and he says the mustache is only temporary as they are all growing them in his mod until one of his buddies leaves the ship, lol)

I have a couple of questions. My sons PIR date is 3/8/13 afterwards he is to head to Pensacola for A school. How many weeks is that and during that time should they have a vechicle?
Jan 29, 2013
harpist mom
My son's PIR was on 3/9/12, and he went to Pensacola immediately for A school. He was initially stationed at the Naval Air Station and he did not "class up" for the first class until the end of May. He was given various office jobs until he began the first course. He finished the first course around the first of July and missed the cutoff on the second course at Corry Station because his last name began with a letter at the end of the alphabet (the class filled up before his name came up). He had more office jobs in July and transferred to Corry Station in mid-August for the second course, which he completed the first of November.
He did have a car while he was there although he was required to have a buddy to go offbase while at the NAS so he was unable to leave at those times when he could not find a buddy. Corry Station's rules were a lot looser. From a personal standpoint, I wish they had been more strict there, but I have heard that things have "tightened up" recently, which is good.
Jan 29, 2013
ProundSailorMom
Oh my so he could be there awhile. He said he would be there for 9 months but I thought that was a bit long. I wasn't sure about the car and know that there should be no reason to leave the base actually but being there that long then perhaps he may want to leave.
Jan 29, 2013
harpist mom
Frankly, I wish the current rules had been in place when my son was at Corry. Even though he is also in his mid-twenties, an unfortunate decision he made while he was there might have been averted.

My son started Corry thanksgiving weekend. He took off from Chicago Saturday morning. Just like harpist he missed the class and did work around the base until classes started first week of January. I learned this week his graduation date is April 22. He did tell me about a month ago they stopped phase 3 to tighten things up. I am not sure if that is still the case. He too has to have 3 buddies and they have to be in by 10 weekdays ane 12 on weekends. He said bootcamp is a breeze compared to this. He has no need for a car - they walk everywhere and take the bus to the beach. $2 each way. Hope that helps

Things have tightened up more recently than 2009 at Corry Station. My son was there Aug through Oct and there was no buddy system required to go off base during that time. He said the rules were much more lax at Corry than at NAS while he was there. If I remember correctly, I thought he said something like a person could stay out all night and it would be no big deal at Corry. Glad they have tightened up now.

Thank you for verifying. My son said exactly the same thing. I am very disappointed in the negligence in enforcing structure and rules while my son was at Corry. It did not set a very high bar or good example for the Navy.

My son has just started "A" school. He is 19 years old and a really great young man. I have a question regarding the stress level of being a CTT. Not at the school level, but once they are in the fleet after all their training. I know most of what they do they cannot communicate to anyone outside of their job. My husband and I want to help prepare him, now that he is in the adult world, with tools to handle the stresses that may come with being a CTT and how to put it in perspective. Is it a level that some find overwhelming? ?We want to help prevent that if it is an issue with this rate. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey ladies,
I haven't been on in a while. Been very busy doing that CT thing at work...
The good news is my son only has about 9 months (max) left then he became a civilian..Woo-hoo! I just cannot wait. The contractors are already hounding him for a resume'. Some have already gave him contingent offers. 9 months will come really quick for him. What sucks is he could be getting out now, but the Navy just changed the rule. Now he has to stay until his EAOS.
Per the drugs at Corry. There are drugs everywhere in the world. Believe it or not, Great Lakes has a huge Heroin problem. There are idiots in the world, it's part of our society Those in the Navy will be caught, it just some time. The sailor that gets into it would have more than likely got into it as a civilian. The only problem in the Navy is your crime (drug use) will follow you around for the rest of your life.
Kimberly - Is your son a Operator (4 year) or a Technical (6 year) CTT? The stress is actually not that bad in school. Yes, it's hard, but everything life that is worth anything is hard. The hard part is actually in the fleet. What's scary about CTT's is they are the keyplayers in recent Navy accidents. Look at the USS Stark, USS Greeneville, and others. After the USS Stark took the missile hits, the Navy decides to update the CTT's gear. It's a sad way to figure out you need to throw money at a problem. (ie after the fact). Luckily all the equipment is now updated... My nephew loves being a CTT. He has it made....
ThomasLogans - As any Marine will tell you, there is no such thing as an "ex" Marine. There are only "former" Marine. Believe me, if you say the "ex" word around a Marine, you will be corrected....Guaranteed. It's an honor thing....

"ex" is ok for all services, except Marines. Man those guy really get worked up about it....
http://www.military.com/marine-corps-birthday/marine-birthday-no-ex...
We spin them up too by saying:
On the Marine Corps seal, it says "Department of the Navy".... Is that the women's department?...." They usually respond with a black eye....~ha
It's almost like brotherly love. We love each other, but we also both dog each other out, but, if some outsider says anything to either one of us, then we group together and dog them out.
