Thanks Cinder...Craig actually told me about this site.  He helped me out by sending me pics of my son yesterday after PIR graduation.  He's a great source of much Corry Station knowledge!

  • ProudNavyMom2012

Hi y'all! Although I've been a member of the group for some time now, this is my first time to post.  I'm just curious about the 'hounding' because my son is a CTT stationed in Norfolk since leaving Corry in November. He has some time left in the Navy, so my question is 'When does the hounding begin?' And, 'Where are some of the likely places he might be able to choose to go?'  I've got Colorado and DC/Maryland areas, any others?

  • sunshine73

Welcome Navymama! My son is also a CTR. He is stationed in Hawaii but is currently deployed. My son loves his job. Hopefully yours will too.

  • Mommahead

ah..think I found the right group now.  Have to say that following this board for the last few days has been interesting though!  I am finding the whole process of letting go a litle easier than most.  And, I am interested in the other aspects of Cryptology too.

  • navymama

@sunshine73, that's exactly what my son wants to be doing; stationed in Hawaii.  My husband was stationed there for 5 yrs (before I met him).  I really want to see Pearl Harbor!  I know my son is going to have a blast doing CTR.  I think it's right up his alley!

  • Craig

ProudNavy - Various companies pay a bonus to their employee that refers a someone with a SBI clearance to join their company.  My company pay ~$5K.  Some pay more, some pay less.  It cost a lot of money to clear someone with a SBI access.  The normal wait is about 8 to 12 months to get cleared.  So, a uncleared employee is basically useless to the company until they are cleared.  However, if you already have a SBI clearance, then you are a walk in.  You will be cleared in 2 weeks or less.  So you will be hounded to give them a resume'.  Most companies don't hound you until you have less than 6 months left, unless you have a special skill.  With special skills they hound you about 1 before you get out.

TLM - I am so confused.  I don't know why you think your parenting skill are being questioned.  I either missed a post, or someone deleted a post.  All I have seen so far is people saying how they would do things with their own sailors.  Can't we all express what we would do with our own sailors?  Everyone as a different view on things.  If we all had the same view, this world would be really boring place.

Now my question to the group, do you think this sailor is an idiot by recording his wife doing math calculations for all those to see?  I bet he didn't calculate the really boring night in the hotel he was about to have....~ha

  • Julia

Hi I have a question. Now that my son has started CTR training I don't hear from him. Is this part of it?
  • Julia

Singingbird thank you. He responded to a text today! He is training at night and you are correct very busy. He loves it. He is also reading the watch for a retiring chief. How exciting and so beautiful. I just read it and it made my eyes tear. Here a new sailor and a sailor of 20 years. I am so glad he loves the Navy. What a blessing.
  • cinder

Singingbird where is your son going to be stationed?  Enjoy your time with him.

  • jangles

Sure would be nice to talk to some mom's with sailor's in Monterrey. Are you out there? How does it go for them there. My sailor has been there just over a month and seems to be settling in okay...

  • cinder

Jangles. There is also a CTI group that can help you out with Monterey .
  • Julia

    Singingbird- congratulations!!! What an accomplishment!
  • Ducky

    Jangles,

Come over to CTI.  My sailor has been in Monterey for two weeks, loves it.

  • jangles

Will look into finding the CTI place, thanks Ducky...

Craig- my sailor will be back in Denver first week of July- He will be coming in for the birth of his 1st baby due July 4th.  He is arranging to get a "ticket" to come visit you for a tour-- are you going to be in town during the 1st week or possibly 2nd week of July ? (never know when babies decide to be born)... As soon as his wife starts labor, he gets to fly out immediately to be with her. Good time to see if he can pop over to visit the facilities.....Maybe last time he is in Denver for a long time. Let me know what I need to do to get him in touch with you. THANKS

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Hope everyone is well...haven't been on for awhile but wanted to update a bit. Our 6 year CTT left Corry Oct 2011 and first deployment was Jan 2012. Spent 6 months in the Med and loved it. Not due for another deployment until Jan 2014 EXCEPT was just "loaned" to another ship and deployed with one week's notice back to the Med. Suppose to be 60 days, but has a 90-day contract. Now with budget cuts the ship may be deployed longer than the original 6 months slated and he may be on for the whole time as a replacement may not be sent over. He and his wife are upbeat and positive knowing this is great for advancement.

  • cinder

    Hi Rorysmom,

What is the Med?  My son is a 6 year CTT and left Corry Oct. 2012 and is on his first deployment on a Carrier.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

So sorry! Mediterranean - I can never spell that right!

  • cinder

LOL that is ok just wasn't sure if it was an acronym.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Hi singingbird...I hope they meet! Our son had the greatest time in ports last deployment. The pictures were beautiful and he had amazing adventures good and bad lol. I'm sure yours will have the same!

  • darrad(Ship09Div341)

Hey everybody...haven't commented on here in awhile but I read it all the time. Just received crazy news from our CTR. First, he is being sent to Hawaii for 3 yrs AND is getting married before he leaves!!!

  • NavyMom4J

Karen-Tucson- Congrats to your sailor reenlisting- I am hoping my sailor does the same- even though the bonus is low, better than what is out there in this economy right now. Hawaii sounds nice!

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Karen-So sad about the bonus but not surprised with the budget woes the way they are. My heart still goes out to the crew of the Truman whose deployment was cancelled 40 hours before they were to leave on the 8th. Many had given up apartments, sent families home to other states and put their belongings in storage. Somewhere between 4000 to 5000 sailors.

  • Linda Rae

My son is in CTR school at Corry and has been there since around the first of the year. I don't know the name of his barracks but he said it's the one that's okay - not the really nice ones or the really bad ones. Anyway, he told me he can't get internet in his room because the the wireless service (that you can buy) sucks.  Anytime he wants to use the internet, he has to go to MWR center.  Has anyone had any success in getting internet service in the barracks?

  • sunshine73

Linda Rae, My son was there 10 months and complained about the internet the whole time.

  • proudmom

Linda Rae my son was there from April thru the end of Oct for CTN, he had internet in his room and really didn't complain to much about it.
  • proudmom

I know you do have to pay for internet service in your room.
  • Julia

My CTR also had problems with Internet and based on his data usage I'm sure it's still not up and running.
  • cinder

It is a high security base and the internet is terrible my son had huge megabytes on his phone.

  • BTsmom

Okay this is going to be a long one I think. My Sailor contracted MRSA while in Bootcamp. It was really bad. She finally got to the ER last week. She has some serious other medical issues that she wants to address with a doctor off base. Since the bootcamp doctors didn't pay attention to this serious case of MRSA, she doesn't trust any of them. Anyway she has asked petty officers questions about the health care and everyone she asks gives her different conflicting info. She is so frustrated. She is not sure whether she has the Tri-Care(?) or whether she can even go off base to another doctor. Can anyone tell me exactly who she can talk to to get correct information. She is also afraid to miss school, which she would have to do because of school hours and medicals hours. She needs to get to a doctor who can help her as soon as possible. There seems to be a huge lack of communication there.

    Someone please help!

  • cinder

She does have Tri-Care that starts the day she in in BC.  The Navy medical people should refer her to anther doctor if they feel that they cannot provide the correct medical care.  That's all I know sorry can't be of more help.

  • navymom3

BTSMOM she needs to let her teacher know and they will let her go. My son went to the dentist many times.

  • harpist mom

Darrad, Sounds familiar. My son did the same thing. The only difference is that we found out about the wedding after the fact.

Do parents and family members usually attend A School graduation or ceremony?
  • cinder

Some do and it is a very short ceremony. My sons instructor just handed them their papers so he told us not to come we are in CA so we didn't go.
  • Arkansas Mom ship02 div948

Hi everyone ! Not sure when my son will be coming to Pensacola but he was told last week his CTR classes start on 4-1... Really appreciate all the great info posted on the group page !  I was hoping to visit him in DC where he is stationed now but not sure how much longer he will be there... Can anyone tell me exactly how long CTR school is and do they ever have time off for family to visit ? Thanks in advance !

  • darrad(Ship09Div341)

harpistmom, it was almost like that for us. He called me Thursday night at 1:30am to tell me that his fiance is on her way and they are going to the JP that day!! OK...well. So now he's married and heading to Hawaii in two weeks. Wow!

  • sunshine73

my sailor was in A school from March to the beginning of July. We visited on most of the holidays (Easter, Memorial Weekend, and his graduation the first week of July). They all fell on weekends that he didn't have watch. School was very stressful and he enjoyed family visits. He ended up getting C school in P'cola and so we also went on Labor Day Weekend. :)  We enjoyed the A school graduation very much. It isn't anything like PIR.  It was small and family oriented.

  • harpist mom

darrad, Have you met his new wife yet? How old is your son? Best wishes to them!

  • Arkansas Mom ship02 div948

Hi sunshine73, was your son going to A school for CTR ?

  • Craig

Hey vet moms!!!!  Woo-hoo... I can finally talk again...   My wife and I have been in Asia (we still are), me doing business things, and she doing a medical/dental mission.  After my business things were over, I was able to reconnect with my wife on the medical/dental mission providing care to the people that everyone forgets in the poorest of the poor in the Philippines.  We have seen and provided service to over 4000 people.  Luckily, PIRGIFTS.com provided some of the funding for the meds and ancillary items to make it a success. We had 6 UD Doctors, and 9 US Dentist.  It was really hard on both because they had to use primitive tools to do the job.  I just wanted to thank those that have purchased the boot camp challenge coins from PIRGifts.com,  My job was the teach kids how to brush their teeth.  Most haven't ever seen a toothbrush.  Being the only white guy, the kids really listened well, and asked soooo many questions just to practice their English.

It truly amazes me how I lived for the past 3 weeks, Here is some pictures.  All the services provided were on a basketball court.  It's amazing to see what we had done will such limited resources.

harpistmom, yes we did meet her over the Christmas holidays. My son is 22 years old and I think she is 24. He met her in November when she came to Cory Station to visit a friend who is stationed there. Just so happens...she only lives like an hour from our house! I hope everything works out..went a little too fast for us! :)

  • harpist mom

Believe me, your last sentence pertains to our situation as well, particularly the part about it "went a little too fast." I couldn't understand what the big rush was.

  • sammy1990

ladies, if it helps, my husband and I were in the military, i met him tdy, and we did 95% of our communication on the phone since we lived 1500 miles apart (visited just twice). then we married 8 months later. my parents must have freaked! still married 28 years later with three kids... two in the military. I'm sure a little luck was involved, but we both were ready and knew what we were looking for when we met. god bless the new marriages. may they have the same luck!
  • harpist mom

sammy, Congratulations on your successful marriage and best wishes for many, many more happy years together!

I would have been MUCH more relieved if there had been an 8 month courtship in my son's situation: the details are sketchy, but it seems he may have known her two months and dated her about 3  weeks before they ran off and got married. I don't understand why these sailors feel the need to get married right after they finish school. I'm sure that last sentence will generate some comments! :)

  • NavyMom4J

Seems a common theme with our sons / daughters getting married all too soon. I too was in that situation- My son married all too soon for me too...must be a military thing because so many of them do this quickly. He knew his wife a year before, but mostly a long distance relationship during that time as well. Good to hear from others it has lasted for some!

  • tehlilone (Ship 12 Div 371)

But you know...sometimes it's too soon for mothers no matter how long their son is with a girl. His family was actual surprised when he proposed the month before he left for boot camp and his mom was against us marrying while he was in A school. She said it was too early... we've been together since high school and our 10 year anniversary is this June.
