Yep. People can see this but they have to look for it. On facebook, what we say pops up on the side feed for all of our friends to see. My sailor has been told that we shouldn't even say what his rate is ANYWHERE but especially on facebook. It says that the group is closed but not private or secret. Secret is the only way I know about that doesn't show. I'm not an expert, so I am not sure.

I don't think our feeds from the FB group can be seen. I was in a PIR group where the feeds did not show. That would have been seriously embarrassing considering some of the conversations we had.

sunshine - Frankly i think they tell these sailors this so they get big head. Geez, they have they winter blue uniforms with a big CT symbol on them. Everyone knows your a CT. If they didn't want them to know, they would have you remove the symbol. Anyone can see full names of all sailor at each advancement cycle. It's open source info.
I should tell you some of the stories that go around about CT's. Geez... We actually have the official rules about social networks at work. Let me see if I can find it. It will explain what is OPSEC and what's not.

I sent my request to you Craig. as far as infor, I have never been told not to say his rate (which most people dont know what rate is what). As far as facebook, before he was deployed , they were told to not mention anything about their deployment and to tell his family and friends the same, and everyone has respected that and it has not been a problem. Heard the Navy plane went down and all three crew members were killed, praying for those families.

You guys have to understand that my son takes things very literally. If they tell him not to do something, he is not gonna do it. So, if he thinks it is a big deal, I will try to honor his wishes. He is my facebook friend and I do not want him to be upset with me over something so silly. ;) He is already so tight lipped about everything. I don't want to make it worse.

sunshine - When we pulled into Yugoslavia, which at that time was a communist country, we were required to be in uniform while on liberty. They could care less if we were CT's or not. Anyone could see the dang lightning bolt and quill on our badges.
When at a school command we always use to "play" with the guys going through school. We just loved messing with them.
When you're on a ship, CT's actually work inside a vault. When there is an emergency security drill, they will always post a Marine (or 2) with an M-16 outside our door to prevent intruders from getting inside the space. It national security we are protecting. However, the big story on ships is they tell the crew the reason the Marines are there is to shoot us in case we are captured so we can't divulge the stuff we do. That is a huge joke. As if I would let someone purposely shoot me. But people believe it. Many people.... It's so funny....
Let's face it, when you work in a vault all day long you think of stupid stuff you can do just to mess with people....

You should be able to just put last and first name as long as you have the right PO number. I put my sons rate and he has never said anything. The sailors handling the mail I'm sure don't care about his rate and like Carig has said he walks around the ship with his rate showing. My son was never told not to tell people his rate or to close his facebook page. Like Craig said they like to play jokes on the newbies.

Craig
All sailors have the right to keep a private as possible or not. It is their life.
However, I hope they are not fooled to think no one can figure out their job. If someone really wanted to "hunt" a CT sailor down to get them to commit espionage or whatever, then all they would have to do is look up their name from the advancement list, and plug it into facebook. Every award ceremony has the names and rating listed too. Everyone knows the big CT websites. If the Navy didn't want for people to know their rating, then they wouldn't openly publish the advancement list in the news.
Just my opinion...

Craig, you are a knowledgeable guy. Do you what the MCSAP program is? My son just applied for this. I do know it's a 6yr commitment. He told me "it's small and you won't find out anything about it." He should know by now not to underestimate his mother. From what he said it will look good on his Navy/post Navy record. True??

Craig, what is the significance of the enlisted information dominance warfare specialist? What do the CTs have to do to get there?
Mar 14, 2013
Craig
Connie - The easiest way to explain it is using the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) as an example. When I got my ESWS pin it was brand new program. Now it is a require program, just like all the other warfare pins.
Lets use the USS Stark as an example. The manning of the USS Stark is 200 sailors. When Iraq fired upon the USS Stark with two French exocet missiles it killed 37 sailors, and severely injured 21. How can a ship survive with 1/4 the ship out of commission? It because the crew had their ESWS pins. With ESWS you qualify are each station on the ship. You might work in the deck department one week, the Gunnery department the next, the signal bridge the next, and it continues until you qualify at all stations. Does it mean you know that job? No, it only means you have the basic knowledge and can be easily trained to take over compared to someone that doesn't have ESWS. It gives the CO a "warm-fuzzy" knowing that his crew is fully qualified when/if something happens. The ship can continuing fighting with downed shipmates.
Same as the EIDWS pin. You have to learn about everything. You don't just know your job, you know what everyone is doing....
Make sense?

CTmomof3 - Military COMINT Signals Analyst Program (MCSAP) means he's a CTR with the NEC 9147. Remember CTR's do the COMINT (Communication Intelligence) and the CTT do the ELINT (Electronic Intelligence). I can't really go into the 9147, however, I will show you the unclassified statement. Just go here and scroll down till you get to 9147 (there all 4 digit numbers). They are in numerical order.

Just got the word. My son was accepted into the MCSAP program. He'll be back in the U.S. next March. He's thrilled as the plan he's layed out for himself seems to be falling into place. To make this even better..both my boys will be stationed at the same place at least for a little while.

Some of you guys might want to bookmark this.
Since my son is a CTN. Their SRB bonus is:
Zone A = 0 (4 to 6 years)
Zone B = 3 (6 years 1 day to 10 years)
Zone C = 3 (10 years 1 day to 14 years)
Since he is not totally sure if he's getting out or not, he told me since the bonus is zero (0) for Zone A, and since he won't have 6 years 1 day, he will probably get out. I let him know that he can fall into the Zone B category even though he doesn't have 6 years 1 day. There is one tiny exception to the rule in the rule book that allows him to do this. Most Career Counselors don't have a clue about this rule, so I will post it here just in case your sailor falls into the same category.... (whether if he gets out or not, he needs to know and weigh the actual facts....)
Here is the rule:
OPNAV 1160.8A, para 9b:
a. A member who reenlists more than 24 hours after
discharge or release from active duty (RAD) will be considered a
Navy veteran (NAVET) or Other Service veteran (OSVET) with
broken-service. The 24-hour period begins on the day following
the date of discharge or separation. Recruiters will accept a
prospective reenlistee reentering active duty with a break in
active service greater than 24 hours only when presented with
the original DD Form 214 (copy 1 or copy 4), or a reproduction
of the DD Form 214 with a certified true copy stamp and
imprinted with the appropriate Federal Government authenticating
seal. This form will be used as the principal source document
in determining broken-service SRB eligibility.
also
OPNAV 1160.8A, para 11, note 3:
3. Members with exactly 6 years of active duty at 2400 on the date before
the date of reenlistment or beginning of an extension of enlistment are
entitled to a zone A SRB if otherwise eligible and they previously have not
received a zone A SRB. If members have received a zone A SRB, or no zone A
SRB is designated, they are entitled to a zone B SRB if all other eligibility
requirements are met.

Shoot, I forgot....the below post refers to the new bonus levels that just came out.
Here are the new bonus levels for reenlistment....
http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/messages/Documents/...
I know someone will ask....
Here's How to figure your bonus:
Look up your monthly base pay on the military pay chart
Determine your Reenlistment Zone (Zone A is 21 months - 6 years; Zone B is 6 years - 10 years; Zone C is 10 years - 14 years)
Look up the correct Bonus Multiplier for your Reenlistment Zone and NEC (Job)
Multiply your monthly base pay by the Bonus Multiplier (BM X BP)
Multiply the result by the number of years you are reenlisting for.
The result is the total amount of your reenlistment bonus. One-half will be paid upon reenlistment, and the rest divided to pay annually.
Tips:
If you are reenlisting for partial years, use fractions. For example, 4 1/2 years is 4.5
Remember that about 25 percent will be deducted for federal and state taxes.

This comment isn't "Navy", but it is "Cryptology" so I hope it is okay to post. There is a PBS mini-series currently running that I find interesting. The Bletchley Circle revolves around 4 women who use their cryptology skills used in WWII to track down a serial killer. It appears they are showing the first of 3 parts a few times this week, if anyone else is interested.
