Hi, wanted to welcome you to the site and let you know that we have a large group of GA families here as well. Just go to groups and enter GA Navy moms, please stop by and meet everyone - we like to get together on occassion. Like this weekend, lunch in Kennesaw but we have done them in Savannah in the past.
Welcome to the GA moms ----- when is your recruit heading to boot camp? Those first couple of weeks are hard on the...families but it gets easier once you get that first letter and know they are okay. Our son has been in 2.5 years ...already. It goes by so fast. He is stationed in Hawaii ;-)
Ohhh - he's going to get a nice set of glasses soon! They are called BC - aka birth control glasses as they are so ugly. BUT...the week he goes to battlestations, you can mail him more contacts or regular glasses if he has them. THey are allowed to wear contacts or their own glasses at PIR but they don't have much space to store anything so you need to send them at the end of training. There will be many like him in BC glasses, it's all about uniformity in the Navy and especially at bootcamp!
I know you must be anxious to get that first letter from him - it generally comes between the 2nd and 3rd week as they are only allowed to write on Sunday ams. Mail from GL usually reaches GA on Thursdays ---- it soon will be your favorite day of the week!!!
He's going into a great field, our son tested for it but at the end decided he wanted to go into the same rate that his dad was - which is FC and part of the Advanced Electronics Computer Field program. They also go to school for almost two years; first one at GL and the 2nd one was in N. VA for him. Now he is out on his first deployment and will be returning soon. We have not gone yet -- he's been with the ship for one year and the ship has been deployed for half of that year. We maybe going for the holidays pending his schedule.
You may have heard this from others but...boot camp typically is harder on the families than the recruits as we are sitting here wondering - are they okay? are they sorry they joined? is the food okay? are they sleeping? First letter will help alot and before you ----- it will be graduation time!
