I have just retired after 31 years in education and am starting a new chapter in my life. Along with that, my youngest son will be leaving on July 5 to join the Navy.
I am here to support my
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy career?

When I heard “Navy,” I...
Was proud and encouraged it
Our Navy experience so far...
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

My son just left for BC on the 21st out of Shreveport. We let the recruiter pick him up and take him to the hotel. We got a room at the same hotel so we could spend the evening together. We took him out to eat and then hung out in the room and watched some tv. I laughed so hard and so much! It was so nice to be there just for him!
Then we got to the MEPS office about 8:00 am. They had been there awhile and were watching a movie. The MEPS office has several processing stations (rooms) and several waiting areas including a game room. When we were there I would say that there were about 8 or 10 other families and they were with all branches. It was alot of waiting but I let my son use my phone to text his gf and we watched movies and talked to other families when he was processing. Then they called us back to a ceremony room and the gave a speech and then swore them in. My husband was able to take pics and we videoed the swearing in.
After that he wanted us to go on home, but I told him we were already there so we would wait until he left for the airport. I really wanted to go to the airport but I could tell he didn't want me to go. He made friends with his room mate from the hotel and another SR. I'm so happy that they had that time to bond. They ended up spending the night in Memphis due to the weather and it was good to know they were all together.
Anyway, the point of my long comment is to let you know what will go on during MEPS and that I did not cry the entire time! The environment wasn't really condusive to crying! LOL! I thought about it a couple of times but there was so much hustle and bustle that I never really cried. I didn't see any other Moms crying either.
I'm really glad I went. I didn't really ask my son, it was obvious before he left that I was going!! LOL!
Good luck and let your son know that there are alot of other moms like us out there!
Hi Jana - Thanks so much for sharing your plans about dropping off your son. My son sounds very similar. He didn't want me going to MEPs or taking him out for dinner. He has since talked to his recruiter and has decided that it isn't all that out of the ordinary - other recruits do it and I promised to have him back on time. So, as of today I've gotten the ok for both dinner and he's even said he would be fine if I went down to MEPs to see him sworn in - so YAY! He doesn't ship out to BC until the end of September but I know the time is going to fly by.
I've added you as a friend - hope that is ok. Looking forward to getting to know you and supporting you through the whole experience.

Oh, and feel free to ask me anything. I didn't even know where the MEPS office was until we were leaving that morning!
I'm happy to help and share my experience!
