Hi...my son left May 15 so I feel like a veteran now 6 weeks in.  Okay...here we go.  Make sure he has a phone card, prepaid visa card, identification, wallet, a few snacks,  and address to send the box and form letter (some SR's get so nervous they forget).  Start writing letters the day he leaves-letters are there lifelines.  You won't get his address for a week or more after he arrives, but I didn't have this information and my son did get a letter till almost the end of the third week-he was so depressed.  Then he got 5 in one day.  Write or send pictures on back of computr paper, make sure letters aren't to thick or Recruit Commanders will read them, keep letters upbeat, humorous, and send things like jokes and inspirational quotes.  When he get there tell him to make sure he knows chain of command, never call RT's sir, never look RT's directly in eyes, and say as little as possible.  One group got extra phone calls and priviledges by waking up before RT woke them for the day.  Also, they should try to help fellow SR's when possible, but if it is a female they must make no physical contact.  Keep phone with you at all times- first call comes when they arrive, then second is usually week four unless they need info from home or there is a problem(no news is good news is the motto), but if they have done well you could get a call at anytime so watch for that 847 area code.
