Dad: Physician Assistant-Certified, La Quinta, CA.
Mom: Admin. Assistant Marriott Vacation Club-Golf,
Our Son Matt is in Bootcamp, currently in RCU due to stress fractures.
I am here to support my
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy career?
Waiting to leave for Boot Camp
When I heard “Navy,” I...
Was proud and encouraged it
The Navy offers opportunities that...
After 6 times to MEPS, I was pretty amazed at the ineptness of the NAVY, lost paperwork, lost waiver, Oops your ASFAB expired yesterday, ( why could you have not told me that yesterday), We don't write that job out of San Diego. Who is your Recruiter? But, Finally the day came and everything came together.. The day Matt shipped things worked very nicely.
Our Navy experience so far...
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Was Matt at Mira Mesa MEPS? Did he swear in around 11:00? I will look though my pictures and see if I got a shot of him...assuming that is him on your profile pic! We video'd the swearing in and I would be happy to send it to you, but a lot of it is focused on my son Max. For some reason they rushed my him out. Poor guy is getting very little sleep, arriving in GL 10:30, traveling to BC and then they wake them at 3:00...I know they are young and this is what they signed up for! Where is your son going to A school?
Hang in there Mom and Dad, the first week to ten days is the hardest until you get the form letter and "Kid in a box" minus your kid. Once you get the address and can start planning for PIR it gets a little better. I am only 8 days into BC and I was a mess at MEPS but it is an amazing proud moment to watch your child swear in. Enjoy! (Icried hysterically for the 2 hour drive home)
Make sure you have lots of tissues. You'll get thru it, it is such a strange mixture of emotions, sad, worried, missing them already and Pride. Don't worry the Navy takes good care of their own. Welcome to the Navy Mom and Dad,
After dropping off our son at DEPS, Max called us and said that we had to "go now" if we wanted to see him get sworn in. I had just got out of the shower and all of us scrambled to throw on close and run out of the door wet hair and all in 5 minutes. It turned out that we had plenty of time and had to wait another 3 hours for that. Because of the mad dash, I forgot my tissues, so we were provided some at MEPS. They were like 2 x 2 pieces of sandpaper! I just found them in my pocket in little crumpled balls. I think I’m going to use one in a scrapbook page as nothing will dissolve those!
My mind keeps wandering as to what our boys are doing right now and if they are having regrets. I’m trying to liken it to childbirth labor…scary and painful but the rewards are well worth it! Oh, and throw in pride that we did what we thought we couldn’t do!
Hi Mom&Dad4MattJ - our son swears in on 10/23. We live in Riverside and will be going to San Diego to watch him swear in. Can you recommend a hotel to stay in as we will be going the night before..... Thanks! Debbie
Hi Again - You mentioned the San Diego Marriott - I will look into that. Another gal (a recruits wife) told me that her husband recently left from San Diego MEPS and that he swore in on one day and then didn't leave for the airport until the next day! She said something about us being on the West Coast and not having enough time in the day to swear in and ship. Did you experience this? We were only planning on spending one night because we thought everything would happen in one day. I'm going to have my son ask his recruiter for clarification but what was your experience? We would like to be able to go to the airport but if it is another day don't know if hubby, GF and I can all take 2 days off work!
Hi! I have not gotten a letter yet either :( I hope it comes today though. The boys are doing really well actually. The first three days they kept asking for daddy and wondering when hes going to come home, which was incredibly hard! How do you explain to a 2 1/2 year old daddy is going to be gone for a little while. Now after a week has passed they kinda just accept it now and went on with their little lives. So far so good though, its been an adjustment doing everything myself but I actually kinda like it! Feels like more bonding time ( shh dont tell my husband haha ) I hope you guys are doing well and we made it a week!! 7 more to go
aww you guys are lucky! I want a call :( Im glad you are able to talk to him for a short period of time though! I didnt get the letter today maybe tomorrow. boy I wish it would just come already.
My son left for BC 9/17 within a week he called and said his shoulder dislocated and would be in RCU another 6-8 weeks. Then he sent me a letter that he could be there up to 12 weeks more. It is very depressing for them in there. At least thats what my son said. I wrote to him every day and sent him lots of puzzles, articles from the local paper etc. He said all they do is laundry and clean all day and there physical therapy. The one thing he did do that I was pleased about is he asked for a 2nd opinion. He was taken to the federal hospital. He said it is slightly off the base but I am not sure how something is slightly off base? That dr ordered him 3 weeks of PT and said he should be better than before. His dr there on base was trying to SEP him. He was able to call home last sunday and he said the dr trying to SEP him examined him again and his shoulder woulnd't come out of socket now so hopefully the PT an dworking out has strengthened it. It may not be a bad idea to have your son ask for the 2nd opinion. Let me know if you need to talk. I have been through many stages of emotions since he left. I feel for you almost getting to PIR and have that happen. Best advise I can give is just tell him to stay positive. My son was ok for a while and then was ready to quit. The last time I talked to him he was determined to get out of RCU and back to BC.
