Welcome to our Nuke mom's group! My son is an MM - he's in VA on the USS Truman.
Be sure to look at the pages (9) on the nuke mom's main page - to the right under the member profiles. There's lots of good info there - and feel free to ask any questions you may have ;-) We have lots of mom's (& dad's too!) with sailors in various places in the nuke pipeline. Where is your son/daughter at in the process?
If your son went in with a nuke contract then he will definitely be going to Goose Creek! Both A school and Power school are in Goose Creek and Prototype can be in either Goose Creek or Ballston Spa, NY. (My son was in NY). The entire nuke pipeline takes about 2 years. My son had PIR on 12/21/12 and he graduated the nuke program on 1/23/15. He's been in VA since February and enjoying life so far. He re-enlisted at graduation so he's an E5 and is able to live off base now. (In prototype they live off base too.)
I have learned that you just take it one day at a time....like you said, they are the one's doing all the work - our job is to be their cheerleader! Start writing your letters now (and # them) so when you get the form letter with his address you can send them out right away. Count Friday's rather than individual days and the time will go by much faster! Before you know it PIR will be here ;-)
Good luck to him (and you!). Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. {{{NMH}}} to you (that's Navy Mom hugs!).
It's interesting seeing some of the things the recruiters tell them! If your son is on a carrier he could end up in either San Diego, WA State, Norfolk VA, or Japan. If he ends up on a sub there are many more places he could go (and yes, one of them is Hawaii!). I'm not sure of all the sub places since my son is on a carrier. That's something that you wouldn't worry about until he's close to being done with the program. Subs only take volunteers but they have way more volunteers than they need so even if he wanted to be on a sub it could change at the last minute & he could end up on a carrier - you (and he) will soon learn "Needs of the Navy" comes first!
Is your son in Boot Camp now? When is his PIR (graduation)? If you are coming to Great Lakes for the graduation, I would encourage you to attend Sarge's Meet & Greet on Thursday night. Meet other families, good food, and Sarge has lots of information on how to make the graduation easier.
