My Sailor's cell carrier is Sprint. They will place him on deployment status and not bill him while he is gone. He can still use the camera or call Sprint to have it turned back on when he returns home. International rates are awful. He is better off getting an AT&T ship to shore calling card for times he just has to talk.  With cell service off, he can still communicate with you through instant messaging and Skype when he has wifi. He will also get a Navy email address. It takes two-three weeks for mail and packages so instant messages are a God send.   Check with your sailor's carrier.

What is his rate?  My Sailor has only been on the Sammy B since July. Your sailor is joining the ship at the end of their deployment so he won't be at sea for a long period of time.

Keep your phone handy for instant messages. They are six hours ahead of us ;-)
