Hey everyone I’m new to the navy for moms website. My significant other is currently in Great Lakes for boot camp. I have gotten quite a bit of information but I am kinda hoping to find new things out. Anything on boot camp as it goes on, graduation ceremony info, and the only main question I have is if no updates are a good thing. I have sent out letters via Sandboxx and no replies yet he started June 7th. Hoping and praying every thing is going well. Any new info helps

So I decided that I had better do it now!

Yvonne is recovering very well! We saw the doctor post surgery for the second time last Wednesday. He showed us the new x-rays and though pretty intimidating, they looked good. He said everything there looked good and was in the place it should be. We told him her legs were still spasming a lot at night. They don't spasm much in the day time. On the 10th of March he had increased her Baclofen dosage to 10mg three times a day which helped a little bit. Last Wednesday he increased her Lyrica dosage to 150mg at night instead of 75. Which has helped reduce the nighttime spasms further. Please keep her in prayer for this. They are much less frequent and much less painful when she does have them. But it's still frustrating going through the night getting up three or four times.

She came home from Lake Taylor Rehab Center and immediately started home health care OT and PT. We requested the same two therapists she had last year and got them! They each come twice a week on alternate days. They are working with her on her posture and balance and walking. Both therapists say she is doing very well! Last Wednesday Kia (OT) actually had her walk a little obstacle course she set up in our living room. Yvonne was able to walk (although with great difficulty) about 10 feet without the use of her walker. She walked the rest of the way using only one hand on her walker. The improvements are actually very dramatic!

She still has a good deal of pain, but not near as much as before. Her biggest problem right now is her fear. That is the primary issue keeping her from moving her feet to walk with less dependence on her walker. The Lord really spoke to her through our pastor's (Lance Matthew Bacon) sermon this morning. Please keep praying for her for courage, balance, and the ability to use her legs with less and less dependence on her walker. We are still believing that God promised us that He would restore her to health and heal her wounds. And we all know that He who promised is faithful! So we keep holding on unswervingly to the hope we profess.

Thank you for your love and prayer support!
Update and Prayer Request for Yvonne 3/4/23tag:navyformoms.ning.com,2023-03-04:1971797:BlogPost:113338192023-03-04T18:37:05.000ZJohn and Yvonnehttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/JohnandYvonne

She began in home therapy last week having completed two PT sessions. It looks like we are getting the same OT and PT therapists that she had last year. We requested them because they were so good and Yvonne did so well with them last year.

My prayer request for her is for spasms she is having in her legs at night - all night! She gets about two hours of sleep at a time and then the spasms begin and wake her up. She has to sit up to get them to stop. We usually end up sitting up anywhere from half an hour to an hour each time. The spasms hurt her so much that she cries and doesn't want to lay back down. But sleep deprivation would only make things worse for her. I work hard to get her to lay back down. She doesn't look forward to going to bed at night because of the spasms.

Please pray for her in this area specifically; as well as her overall recovery. As this ordeal continues it gets harder and harder, but we are still believing and holding on to what God promised us; that He would restore her to health and heal her wounds. Jeremiah 30:17. Thank you for your ongoing prayer support! We know God has heard and answered now for over a year! He has not brought us this far to leave us now. Especially since He said "I will never leave you nor forsake you. Therefore we can say with confidence, 'The Lord is our helper' we will not be afraid. (Hebrews 13:5-6). We have also been reading and holding on to Hebrews 10:35-39. "So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised..."

Once again, thank you for your prayers and love!
Yvonne getting stronger and moving forward!tag:navyformoms.ning.com,2023-02-11:1971797:BlogPost:113324972023-02-11T02:54:42.000ZJohn and Yvonnehttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/JohnandYvonne

She ate well when she got to her room. Thank you all for your prayer support and expressions of love. They are so much appreciated!

First things first.....New Moms.... Take a Deep Breath in....... Let it out...... Take another one......... Let it out....... Repeat continuously!!! Just keep breathing and it will all be OK!! We haven’t lost a mom to Boot camp yet, we won’t start with you.

If your Child has NOT left yet, Read on. IF THEY HAVE LEFT Skip to the next section. Nothing here is critical, but it is useful.
If your Recruit has not left yet: have him or her leave you a voicemail message so when you just can't stand it you can hear their message (Over and Over and Over, Just don’t listen to it till after they've been gone for at least 24 hrs. You’ll know when it’s time.), Sneak a note of encouragement in their wallet and ask them to leave you a note at home so you can find it there. One of the Moms suggested setting a time of day that they would be thinking about/ praying for their SR. That way they would always be connected. Also have them call as soon as they land in Chicago. It will be your last "Visit" until the call home around week 3 or 4. Also talk with them about who they want to be told about and when, should something happen back home. I know this is an uncomfortable topic but it is important to know. They likely would not be able to come home unless it is for their Immediate family.(Mom, Dad, Siblings)

Other things to take care of before your Recruit leaves: Please go read this page! It is Very Helpful and has a complete list of all the things you may want to consider before they leave. Keep in mind it was written some time ago and the box is no longer shipped home (take the Charger for their phone!!)and a few other things may have also changed but the basic gist is still there. https://navyformoms.ning.com/forum/topics/things-to-do-in-the-last-...
If you have time I would get Power of Attorney’s for: any real property, A financial power of attorney and a Medical Power of Attorney There are many places that you can get the forms for free Online and then you just have to get them notarized. I also suggest they open an account with Navy Federal Credit Union if you have a location near you. (the article goes into why and what all they will need otherwise) If you also have the time I strongly suggest you look into getting a Civilian Passport or at least getting all the paperwork filled out unless they are going to a Long A school (nuke or corpsman). Most of the time they can and will travel “on orders”, However if they are stationed overseas they will need a passport to travel outside of their “Station Country” (and Europe has many wonderful countries to see but some are smaller than many of our States!!). If they have to travel under an emergency or something happens to their orders they will at least have their Passport to allow for some greater ease in travel.

Now on to P-Days and what the first few weeks may hold.
Day of Departure/ MEPS/ Flying out-- After they Swear in (You MAY be able to attend this ceremony, Depending on COVID protocols in your area) they will be transported to the Airport to fly to Chicago (unless you live close by in which case they are bused.) Shortly after arrival they will make the “I am Here Call” This usually comes Very late at night or Early morning (Ours came at 1:30am Mountain time) It is Scripted and they are not allowed to vary what is said. You can read the script in the boot camp files but I advise just talking over your SR (Seaman Recruit) and telling them you love them and are proud of them and you KNOW they GOT THIS and OH Yeah… You LOVE THEM!!! Don’t expect an answer but know they will have heard you!

The Processing Days.
P1 begins the Day of Arrival and continues through the night and into the next day. So If your SR (Seaman Recruit) Swore in on Tuesday then Wednesday counts as P1. As you count the P-days DO NOT count Saturday or Sunday or Federal Holidays—Those will be P-Hold days. In My example it would look like this P1- Wed, P2- Thurs, P3- Fri, P-hold- Sat & Sun, P4- Mon and P5- Tue. On P5 they take the initial PFA. (It can be P-4 if they are in a Push Division) Assuming they pass the PFA They will then move into their Ship (Berthing space). "Weeks" can "Begin on any business day so don't get stuck thinking that their week will always start on a Monday. PIR however is Nearly Always on a Friday (Thanksgiving week is the exception)
If they opt into Sandboxx then you may receive their mailing address and Division (Div) as soon as 3 days after they arrived at BC. You DO NOT have to use Sandboxx to send mail but you can if you choose. This is a new change (less than 6 months as of the writing of this blog) so we don’t know if Sandboxx letters mailed in the first couple of weeks are delivered during P-days or not. There is a fee associated with sending mail through Sandboxx, but you can still receive the address at no charge. Please discuss this with your SR before they leave if you are able.

This is Phase 1 of boot camp which begins when recruits first arrive on board RTC. The new recruits will begin filling in their paperwork; they are given further medical and psychological evaluations and receive their inoculations; and receive an initial set of PT gear; are interviewed; and will be assigned to a division. When P-Week is over, Boot Camp officially begins. Phase 1 can be as short as 4 days to as long as 2 weeks, but are seldom over 11 days. (See Arrival and What Happens at RTC and https://www.mypoints.com/emp/u/videos.vm.)

This marks the transition to Training Days. Usually denoted as W1TD1 (Week 1 Training Day 1). This is the day that they traditionally fill out the form letter that gets mailed home. This is where the first big change has happened. If your SR has opted into Sandboxx then you may receive their mailing address and Division (Div) as soon as 3 days after they arrived at BC. If they opt into Sandboxx then RTC advises that the form letter is NOT mailed out, however we have had scattered reports that some moms have gotten both and others have had nothing for weeks on end…. So this next part is still germane.
The form letter is collected and mailed the next business day (W1D2) of their training week (Remember we do not count Sat, Sun or Holidays). Usually that letter arrives home between 14 and 21 business days since departure, HOWEVER there are reasons it may be delayed. If they didn’t pass the initial PFA, If they were on P-hold waiting for others to join to fill the Div/ TG, If they were waiting on paperwork….. If Ma Navy was just not feeling it that day…. Lots of reasons that are NOT cause to panic.

The first 3 weeks are hard but Repeat after me.... No News is Good News!! Again... No News is GOOD NEWS!!! Repeat daily, hourly, Minute by minute as necessary!! Shout it if you need to or whisper it as a prayer! Whatever gets you through!! Come to this site and post on the Main BC page or in your PIR group page. There are many other moms who are here to support you through this time! The Form letter or Sandboxx will give you the address and PIR date!! Time to start making plans to help get your mind off the silence!! Make refundable or Changeable travel plans, work on Room Decorations, make or source a blue candle, take up a hobby so you ahve someting to write to your sailor about. Remember that letters sent in the first 2-3 weeks of training may not arrive in a timely fashion since the Mail Petty Officer has to be trained and until that happens mail is set aside to be sorted later and sometimes that later is MUCH later!! They do try and get the mail delivered but this process is still in place. (If you have information that confirms that mail is getting delivered in the first 2-3 weeks please let me know so I can update this blog.) This is honestly the hardest part of Boot camp! Your emotions are still raw from letting go of your Child and knowing that for better or worse they will be changed by this experience (even those who don’t complete it are changed!) and add to that the Communications Blackout that is imposed and it can be quite overwhelming but trust us that they know you love them, they feel your prayers and you will get a chance to send letters!

Around week 3 you will get the first call home. They may be homesick and there may be tears so be prepared and be strong. (You can come here and cry later, to quote my favorite wizard…”I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.” It’s ok to cry about missing your baby, even if they are mostly full grown!! (We are over 10 years in and I still cry on occasion—Navy Mom Allergies!!!) It does not mean you are weak or not proud!!). The call can come on ANY day of the Week at any time from 9am-9pm Central time. Keep Phones charged and ringers on LOUD at all times while they are in BC!! Answer all Calls!! Yes telemarketers may call but you can hang up on them!! You don't want to risk missing a call from your Recruit! Keep a notepad handy of all the questions you want to ask so you don't forget!

In the meantime while you are waiting through the “Great Silence”, write letters!!! Write all the Letters you can! Take all the raw emotional letters and save them for a BC burning/shredding party at the end of BC and get ready to send positive and encouraging letters. There is a whole file here on letter writing.(https://navyformoms.ning.com/group/bootcampmoms/page/letter-writing-fun-stuff-questionnaires-to-send-to-your-recruit) Read all you can and watch the videos “The Making of a Sailor” videos to get an idea of what your SR’s are going through. (https://youtu.be/pDwLsrmDBF0 & https://youtu.be/7l7a1uigRg4

This whole experience is a huge roller coaster of emotions. We have been where you are now and we know what you are feeling. Just remember you are stronger than you feel… You raised a young Man or Woman who was willing to put duty to country over self. They are strong enough to take on this challenge because they were shown strength from home! You have raised the 1%!! Be proud of that and welcome to the Family!

The other big change is that your SR will call usually after week 8 to say they are a Sailor. They don't always say that but that is how we denote the 3 typical calls (They can earn more.) The big 3 are "I'm Here" - the scripted call that comes in the middle of the night when they arrive at RTC, The "I'm still alive" or "Proof of Life" call --Usually week 3 or 4, and the "I'm a Sailor" call following successful completion of BS21. They then have 2 additional weeks of "Sailorization" training to get them ready for the fleet. This includes Warrior Training as well as some life skills (If you care to share more details I'd love to update the blog with that too.) This is the 2 weeks before PIR. You made it!

I know that if you are reading this you are likely at the beginning of this journey but know you are NOT alone and you are going to get through this!!

TLDR:

The Expected timeline will look like this:
Day 0 -- Travel, Arrival and "I'm Here" scripted phone call

Week 1 Day 1-7 -- Arrive Onboard RTC and begin P-days (P-days- Initial Processing Days) including 2 days of P-hold (Weekend)
Day 8 -- Begin training and mail form letter out. Look for it to arrive around 1-2 weeks later (Unless they opted into Sandboxx)
Week 2 -- First week of Training including PT and Swim Qualifications
Week 3 -- Marlin Spike - (Line handling- How to tie up a Ship to the Pier) , First inspections and tests (Dental May be this week or next... Not Confirmed)(Form letter/ Personal letters usually arrive this week)

Week 4 -- Confidence Chamber & Fire Fighting training
Week 5 -- Fire Arms Training

Week 6 -7 -- More training, Drilling (Flags and Marching).

Week 8 – Battle Stations (done prior to final PFA). Your SR will call home to say they are a Sailor but they still have to pass final PFA in order to graduate.

Week 9 & 10– Warrior Training (Life skills) and Final PFA
Aprox 10 Fridays from Departure they will have PIR!! If you can go you will be amazed at the change that happened in just 10 short weeks. RTC is also still Live Streaming the PIR ceremony on Fridays at 9am CST @ https://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/ or afterward on their FB and YouTube pages
Results from Yvonne's MRI and Surgeon's visittag:navyformoms.ning.com,2023-01-05:1971797:BlogPost:113308792023-01-05T03:49:33.000ZJohn and Yvonnehttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/JohnandYvonne

We finally saw doctor today and got the results of Yvonne's MRI. The level above where the surgeon fused her spine has some serious stenosis in it and is causing her set back.
As most of you who are following my posts about Yvonne, she had a set back a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, when she went for the MRI lying on her back hurt so much she couldn't lay still so they sent us home. So the Doctor has ordered another MRI under IV sedation. But that probably won't be until the middle of December. Until then we simply wait. She hurts quite a lot and is walking very slowly. Sometimes she has great difficulty making her legs move at all. She is working very hard to maintain a positive outlook and to keep her eyes focused on Jesus Christ. We are trying very much to continue holding on unswervingly to the hope we profess because we know that He who promised is faithful! (Hebrews 10:23). And we have believed and profess that God told us from Jeremiah 30:17 that He would restore Yvonne to health and heal her wounds. Please continue to pray for her.
Update on Yvonne's Myelogram proceduretag:navyformoms.ning.com,2022-11-08:1971797:BlogPost:113278972022-11-08T01:40:59.000ZJohn and Yvonnehttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/JohnandYvonne

We went to OBICI Hospital in Suffolk for the earliest appointment we could get. The procedure was very painful for her. But she got through it. Last week we saw Dr. Shuff, her surgeon, and he said she got "high marks" on her myelogram. It was clear, with no impingements. However, they didn't get the very top of the area where he operated. The top vertebrae. So he is sending her in for an MRI of that vertebrae to see if there is any impingement at that level or the one above where he operated that might be causing these symptoms. So again, please pray that we will be able to get an appointment soon. She has a lot of pain when she walks and often has trouble moving her feet and lifting her legs high enough to get them over the threshold coming into the house. So if you would, please pray for us. We are still holding on to and believing for God to restore her to health and heal her wounds! (Jeremiah 30:17). I have to admit, this is really hard. We didn't expect that it would take this long, and that she would still be in this much pain.
Update on Yvonne's CT Myelogram on Wednesdaytag:navyformoms.ning.com,2022-10-21:1971797:BlogPost:113270372022-10-21T00:19:38.000ZJohn and Yvonnehttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/JohnandYvonne

The first ten minutes were excruciatingly painful. Then the CT tech came back into the room where we were and said she could lay on her side as long as she didn't lift her head. As soon as she rolled to her side her pain was almost gone! She went to sleep. Then they came and got us and took us back up to the original prep room. There she fell back to sleep for the next couple of hours. Finally they sent us home about 1:30. She slept on the way home. As soon as we got home it was time for a nap! Thank you all for your prayers!! Now we wait until November 2nd to see Dr. Shuff the surgeon again. Please keep praying. We had a wonderful weekend participating in the Freedom Outreach International Ministry to the Military Warrior's Connection Conference in Hampton without a lot of pain. However, today she has been hurting a LOT! Whenever she gets up to walk around the house she hurts so much she cries. Perhaps it is a result of all of the activity over the weekend. I get that. We are waiting to schedule a CT Myelogram because of the change in her ability to walk, lift her right leg, and the constant pain. On the good news front, she has had three very good nights: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights she slept really well. Five hours in one stretch each night and then one three hour stretch each night. That's the first time in 8 months she has slept so long in one stretch. We are still believing that God will restore her to health and heal her wounds. Please continue to pray for her. I thank you all for your love and support! God bless.
New Prayer Request for Yvonne!!tag:navyformoms.ning.com,2022-10-01:1971797:BlogPost:113259062022-10-01T17:56:49.000ZJohn and Yvonnehttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/JohnandYvonne

Sunday evening at home she was walking around the house, I was behind her, and all of a sudden, her legs just gave out under her. She was able to get herself back up again. But that is always scary!

Yvonne's walking has gotten slower and slower. I posted that she was having trouble lifting her right foot high enough to clear the threshold to get into the house. Well, that is still happening. She says her legs are really heavy. She did go to physical therapy on Wednesday and Friday this week and did pretty well. But on Friday while getting up from her rollator to the parallel bars her knees gave way again. She was able to hold on to the bars, but they are too high to lift herself up. The therapists came and helped her into a chair. Once rested, she got up and was able to finish her physical therapy session.

Several people have asked me if I've called her doctor to let him know. I hadn't because most of the time they don't respond. But yesterday (Friday afternoon) I decided to call and leave a message. A couple of hours later the surgeon called me back and talked with me! I was really shocked!! He prescribed a twelve day regimen of steroid pills to see if they will help calm down the nerves in her legs to see if that will help her mobility and pain. He is also scheduling a test at the hospital where they inject a dye in her spine to check the nerves in her legs. That should be next week some time.

Please pray for Yvonne because we don't know what's happening or why. It's really frustrating and not a little bit scary. We are still holding on to the Word: Jeremiah 30:17 "I will restore you to health and heal your wounds." Hebrews 10:23 "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess because He who promised is faithful." and Hebrews 13:5-6 "God said I will never leave you nor forsake you. My oldest son has been considering joining up since he graduated high school in June, 2020. After a couple years of college, he finally made up his mind. Last week, he took a ride with his recruiter down to MEPS San Diego and took the Oath of Enlistment. He is entering the nuclear program and will report for basic on November 23!

I’m having so many varying emotions about all of it. My biggest feeling is a sense of pride in what a great, kind, smart, altruistic, diligent man he is becoming. My secondary emotions are a mix of anxiety over the rigorous schooling he will endure over the next two years, and sadness over how much we are going to miss him. He has four younger brothers who look up to him like he’s their hero. His dad/my husband was a sailor in the 90s so we kind of know what to expect. I know it’s going to hit us all pretty hard.

I find myself furiously researching what to expect in basic, how Nuke school is run, winter weather in Chicago, the community around South Carolina, and all of the minute details I’m afraid we’ll miss. We have just shy of three months, but I know it’s going to fly by. Some of my phrenetic research is paying off: I just learned that they can bring their own running shoes to basic! So we’re going to use this holiday weekend to go shoe shopping and find the best, most comfortable shoes for him to start breaking in during his daily workouts. I think this is making me feel like I have a little bit of control over a situation that actually has not much to do about me.
My verse for this season: Joshua 1:9 - “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”Yvonne walking over 1/3 of a mile!tag:navyformoms.ning.com,2022-08-26:1971797:BlogPost:113225732022-08-26T17:09:32.000ZJohn and Yvonnehttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/JohnandYvonne

Yvonne is still fighting with pain; however, she is getting stronger and stronger every day! She is up to walking over 1/3 of a mile each day. We are doing the walking every morning at the lake near our house. We measured off the distance beginning with 1/4 of a mile and then increased the distance every few days. She was really surprised when I told her that 1/3 of a mile is the distance completely around the block by our house! It is way more pretty and fun to walk around…

People come out and talk with us as we go by wondering what happened to Yvonne. There are dozens of Canadian Geese, at least a hundred Mallard ducks, and three white ducks. The Crepe Myrtle trees are in full bloom and beautiful! I forgot the camera today so I will have to take a video of her walk tomorrow. God is blessing her and as He promised, restoring her to health and healing her wounds! Thanks for your prayers and please keep on praying!

Hi Navy family,
Thank you so much for your support and warm welcome ! It really is appreciated more than I can express in words . Just wondering: when I will stop crying?!?
I am still figuring out a different email and a user name. This may be a dumb question so please bear with me - will I lose my original Gmail account?
