A School Graduation

Seeing our son graduating from A school was wonderful. He looked so happy. His father and I are so proud of him. We surprised him with a Navy ring we had made special for him. What a big smile we received from him. We stayed the weekend at Groton had dinner at Mystic and went to Mystic Seaport and Aquarium. It was wonderful being with him. Next stop for him is Pearl Harbor, Hi. First 2 weeks home . I know he will be missed but happy he got the station he wanted to go to. This means a trip to… Continue

Women In The Navy: women(re)defined

In March I wrote a blog to recognize Women’s History Month and some of the many honorable women who have served in the Navy. As many of you know, women have gained access to a variety of non-traditional careers over the years. As a result, our idea of femininity is continually being redefined. To showcase the empowering and exciting opportunities available to women in today’s Navy, I’d like to… Continue

Pot roast and potatoes and carrots!

Sunday (July 19, 2009)

Had a great day today! Sunday school was good, we talked about about faith/doubt/rebellion. Worship was excellent too. Pastor Rodney preached about Satan wanting to sift us as wheat - don't let him! Then Savannah and Brandon (Oceana), Brian and Sarah (my daughter and son-in-law), and Randy (Marine – Camp Lejeune, NC) and Nikki and Sarah Mayzak enjoyed a pot roast, potatoes and carrots, followed with apple crisp and ice cream for dinner at our house. We watched… Continue

One of our Marines came back to visit

Saturday Evening (July 18, 2009)

We had Randy (Marine Cpl) and Nikki and little Sarah here visiting us for the weekend from Camp Lejeune North Carolina. It was fun making and eating home made pizzas and playing catch phrase with them, and Savannah and Brandon (Oceana), and Trever (USS Gunston Hall). Then we all shared prayer requests and prayed together. Check out the new pics.

Blessings In A Box

I received "the box" yesterday. I was so excited to open it. The smell of my son came home. As I pulled the jeans from the box, I smiled as contents of the pockets came spilling out. Pretty typical for his laundry. I was even happier to discover the day's mail contained the form letter complete with address. Hooray! I can finally write!

As I sat down to devour the form letter and accompanying brochure, I turned on the news. Within moments came the story telling of how three of our… Continue

Thank you to all Navy Moms

Our son reports to Great Lakes today. Leaving him last night at MEPS in Columbia, SC was so hard but we kept strong until we drove away. He is making it easier on us because he is so excited. He was already enjoying meeting new guys and girls at MEPS. We are so proud of him. I cried so hard on the way back to Charleston and I couldn't get to sleep last night but I couldn't wait to thank all of you today who have given me so much information. I need to keep busy and write him and try not to… Continue

Waiting and Waiting and Waiting...

Today is the first day I have really felt down since my son left for bc. I did not get the phone call saying he had arrived. I see from many other posts this is not terribly abnormal, so I am not as worried as I might have been. Thanks to N4M for the wonderful resources! Wish I could be a mouse on the wall to watch my son go through this experience. I am guessing there is a reason mom's are not welcomed to watch training. (lol) I will wait patiently (or not) for the box and the letter. Can't… Continue

Thanksgiving Hosts?

Hey Navy Moms!

We’ve enjoyed reading your blogs about how you celebrated the 4th of July this past weekend! We always love to hear about the the wonderful things your Sailors are doing and the wonderful things you’re doing for them. Even though it’s months away, we’re wondering if any of you are planning on hosting a group of Sailors for Thanksgiving this year?

Smiles (with a few tears of pride)

As I left the room where my son was sworn in this morning, tears of pride filled my eyes. I wasn't all out sobbing mind you, just a few tears spilling over. Several soldiers of all branches were quick to offer comforting words. So, thoughtful...I couldn't bring myself to explain the tears were pride beyond any other emotion...not sadness. As we left, my husband and I began to speculate on the job description of MEPs personnel. How many of the official job descriptions say, "Comfort mothers" or… Continue

Strong and Courageous

A few short years ago (18 to be exact) I held my infant and called him Joshua for the first time. As I drive my son to MEPs today, it is evident he grew into the young man in scripture whom he was named after. Joshua 1:9 says "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." My son's unwavering commitment to his decision is admirable. He is calm in his excitement to begin his journey. I know… Continue

Journey

The journey is about to begin. My son ships out on July 9th. He has dreamt of becoming a Navy SEAL for a long time. I am so proud of the young man he has become and can't wait to see him blossom throughout this journey. This is my first of three children to leave my home. I vacillate between prayers and biting nails to marking off the days on the calendar. At what point do the questions and concerns of a mother's heart get replaced with calm and confidence? Is it boot camp graduation, each step… Continue
