Hi Joy - I was looking back through my email posts of the BC Mom group and I saw you ask if anyone was in the Houston area. I live in the state north, but I have some family that lives in that area.

I hope that all of the new BC Moms are joining their PIR groups and getting to know each other there.

Joy, I know this site can be confusing, especially if you are viewing it on your mobile device versus a computer. I saw you were online and found your discussion. That did not post in the BC Moms group, but on the BC forum. I highly recommend that you click on the BC Moms group, which is over under your Group list here on your profile page. Once you get to the BC Moms (and loved ones) group, scroll down the page. There is a discussion section there, but there is also a comment area below where we do most of our daily communicating with each other and answer questions. Mom2blondies just posted about her phone call with her SR. I will see if she can copy it to your question but I still recommend you join us in the BC Mom group.

Joy - Here are some replies to your question. They are posted on the BC Mom group in the comment section, I am just recopying them here for you.

Shanny replied: -  I know things are different now that they are at Ft McCoy but when my son went through, they brought their new clothes to the hotel (he was at Great Wolf) and they had to change their clothes right then and they put everything in the boxes and wore only Navy issue after that. I have heard they stop at GL on the way to quarantine to pick up their supplies. But the last time I heard was when they first switched ROM locations.  BUT that was a long way around saying they were Navy issue right away. (Texted my sailor and he verified it for me)

mom2blondies replied: For Joy, my understanding was they stopped in GL and picked up their things, my son only had 1 change of clothes and that was for the hotel before he left as he spent 2 nights in the hotel. They should be provided all of their new clothes and then head to Ft. McCoy.

I hope this is helpful. Please don't hesitate to reach out in the group or to me if you have more questions. We are here to help support you in any way that can as we are able since we volunteer our time on here.

To answer your question:  Thanks so much! Everything about the military is new to our family as our son is the first to enlist!! Random question for anyone that has a sailor that went thru quarantine-do they wear their own clothes or are they given their clothes provided from the navy for boot camp.

I am fairly certain they box up their civilian clothes as well as their cell phone and those are stored until after BC. They are issued their BC gear for wearing in quarantine as well. To my knowledge.

I will post your question on the main BC Mom group and see what others reply.

Good Evening Joy, it is good to hear from you! Not only are you getting use to a child in the military but also getting use to this site can be hard, especially if you are using a mobile device versus a computer. It can be difficult to see the full screen on a phone. If you look to the left of this comment, you will see the BC Mom group.

When you posted your question, you seem to have just replied to my comment here on your page and so it was on my comment wall on My Page only. Which is fine, I don't mind, but you did not post to the group as a whole. If you want to post to the group, clip on the BC Mom group link to the left and then scroll down most of the page and you will find the comment wall there.

Good Morning Joy! I am one of the "seasoned" moms that helps out on the BC Mom group. I get notifications when new members join, but I don't always know if I have the correct one because it just gives me a user name. I see that belovedbyHim posted something here last month, so I am assuming I have the correct Joy and you just recently joined the BC Mom group. We are glad to have you. Be sure to come to the main page of the group (click on the group to the right), scroll past the information, past the discussions till you come to the comment area. That is where everyone "talks". Feel free to post you questions, share your ups and downs of your journey, we are here for you. If you view this site on a mobile device it might work better if you have it in desktop mode.

My son has been in for 3+ years now.

Welcome!! Please read my blog to give you an idea of what the first few weeks may look like.. First Things First-- The Quarantine Edition Up and to the Left is a link to all the Navy Lingo! It is titled Navy Speak and you can find it here. We are here to get you through the “Great Silence” of the next 4 weeks (ish) and the 8 weeks of BC (ish). You will come to learn that No News Is GOOD News and everything is Needs of the Navy. You life will be Hurry Up and Wait and it’s ok to make plans but they are subject to change until after they have happened so it’s best to embrace the Motto: Semper Gumby!! (Always Flexible!!)

The Expected timeline will look like this
Day 0 -- Travel, Arrival and "I'm Here" scripted phone call
Day 1-14 -- ROM (Restriction of Movement/ Quarantine-- Lots of studying and waiting)
Day 15-21 Arrive Onboard RTC and begin P-days (P-days- Initial Processing Days) including 2 days of P-hold (Weekend)
Day 21-- Complete P days. (Initial PFT & Run)
Day 22-- Begin training and mail form letter out. Look for it to arrive around 1-2 weeks later)
All of this is assuming no exposure to COVID with additional ROM
Training typically occurs Monday - Friday but we have heard rumors that Saturday’s are now training days as well.
Normal PIR will be 8 Fridays after departure from Home but it can be less by 1 but it can be extended by ???? (lots!!) It just depends on how many times they get caught in the “Ring of Fire” but do not get COVID. IF they get COVID, Once they are recovered they will not be removed from training again even if they are in the “Ring of Fire”. (so there is that small silver lining if kids get sick)

Since you have a son or daughter that is getting ready to leave for boot camp soon please sit down with them and have a real good talk about what to expect.

Since Covid has hit things have been all over the place - they get put in quarantine, they get out of quarantine, they get put back in quarantine. A normal 8 week boot camp can drag on much longer and it can take a huge mental toll on them. It's important that they understand THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY! They need to be physically strong but more importantly they need to be MENTALLY STRONG!

Let them know that they probably won't even get a letter from home until they are at least HALF WAY through boot camp. NO you haven't forgotten about them - it just takes that long for them to train someone in the mail room so they can get their mail. The first couple of weeks they may question their decision to join - and that's normal! But they need to be strong. This is just the beginning of their Navy career and they need to learn to be FLEXIBLE.

Remind them they are STRONG and THEY CAN DO THIS. Before they leave ask them HOW BAD DO YOU WANT THIS?
