Please do not stay at the America's Best Value Inn in Waukegan, Illinois.  It was in the Navy brochure and only three miles or so from the Navy Recruit Base so we choose it.

We paid around $85 a night plus tax.  We checked in then went to find dinner.  When we came back I discovered that our street level windows were closed but unlocked.  There weren't any screens.  I know better and should have checked but, didn't think about it when we arrived.  Fortunately, we didn't have to add a theft to our experience.   Rooms were smelly, dirty and there was hair on the bathroom floors and toilets.  There wasn't any soap in the bathrooms and the toilet paper was down to a few sheets.   Most lights did not function and most electrical outlets were broken.

You could hear the guests in the other rooms.  We braved it for two nights and on the second night between 3:00 and 5:00 we could hear clearly "wild monkey dancing" in the room next to ours and tried to block out the sexual exploits of the people in the next room with pillows over our head.

Our stress level was heighten by missing our son, travel and the lack of sleep.  I have traveled extensively throughout Latin America and have stayed in many tourist class hotels of third world countries with standards above and beyond this hotel.  This hotel was a disgrace.  Beware.

Everyone - please take a minute to share your hotel experience on TripAdvisor. Thousands of people just like you and me rely on the personal reviews to make hotel choices. Currently America's Best in Waukegan is rated #9 out of 16 hotels in Waukegan, which indicates less than middle of road. Your input is invaluable to other families looking for a decent hotel for PIR!

I contacted Navy recruit  MWR and also posted on tripadvisor.  I was amazed by other stories about "meet and greets".  All families should have a positive experience and memories of this time in Great Lakes.  The PIR ceremony was beautiful and I was so proud of our son and the time we had with him that weekend was so very special.  My son is now at A school in Florida and we are all putting this behind us.  He has moved on to the next phase and his positive adventures have begun.  We have moved on also and love how he checks in each week with an email or a video chat!

Thanks for sharing, sorry you had such a horrible PIR weekend.

I totally agree! Do not book reservations at Americas Best Value. I too saw it in the brochure and made reservations actually in error. I called and emailed within an hour asking to cancel and to not charge my card. They would not do it! I have put a review on Trip Advisor and through the BBB.

NavyMom...they cannot do that. Did you already stay there? Go back and look at the cancellation policy. If you have to, dispute the charge with your cc company.

No this is for pir in December. They said I booked it at an advance rate so cannot cancel.

That just does not seem right.

I agree it isn't right but don't know how I can get it cancelled and not charge my card unless I cancel my card.
