My son is in boot camp with PIR date of 6/21. He met with them about choosing his options on languages. They told him his classes would not start for 45 days after PIR.. Will they hold him at Great Lakes or send him on to A school for hold? If they hold him in Great Lakes will he be able to have his phone? It is okay just thinking out loud this morning and curious..

Momsy - If they are held in GL before going to their A school they are in THU (temporary holding unit) in which case they will be able to have their phones and laptops. I am not as familiar with this process as others but since no one else had replied I am going to share with you what I think is correct, but I may not have all of my terminology correct, so I defer to anyone else that may have more knowledge.

Every new sailor is moved out of RTC one way or another. Those who are flying out to their A school will spend PIR night, maybe one more depending on their flight and then be bussed to the airport early the next morning. They should have liberty immediately following PIR (but there are exceptions, which I am familiar with.) Anyone that is staying in GL for A school will be moved to "across the street" and will have about a 2 -3 hour orientation and have to get their belongings moved into their quarters. Before they are released for liberty.

I believe that those who are THU follow the same procedure on PIR as the sailors who stay in GL. They will move their belongings and then they will have liberty, and also be allowed to have their cell phones and even laptops. Keep in mind though that your sailor will still have to fly out to their A school eventually and so they won't want to have a lot of extra baggage to have to transport. They will be flying with a full load as it is.

Whether or not they hold your sailor in GL or send them on to his A school will depend a lot on the facilities at his A school, primarily if they have room for him. Sometimes other factors affect the movement of the sailors. Only your son will be able to give you this information and he may not actually know it until PIR. Our son was sent to THU the night before PIR and then after PIR was able to get his orders finalized with all of the approving medical signatures that were needed. Had to move his stuff back to RTC after PIR before he was released for liberty. We did not have our son until about 4:30 - 5 pm on his PIR day and then he had to be back to RTC before 7:30 pm. (Our scenario was one of those exceptions and required a lot of flexibility on my part.) Hopefully, yours will be better. If he does go THU, then you can see him over the weekend like the other sailors in GL.

Most of the time, they will do their holds at their A school if it is not at Great Lakes.  This gives them time to do their indoc, and learn their duty rotations.  Every base has a THU, but that is not always where they go, sometimes they are housed in the school barracks.  In any case, they usually may have their electronics right away (I have heard differently about Biloxi, cannot verify though).  Do be sure they have a way to lock their stuff up, you can trust a shipmate with your life, but never your wallet, as my dad used to say.

Anti M - a question in regards to your reply, what do you suggest when you say "do be sure they have a way to lock their stuff up"?  Do they have a locker & we need to provide them a lock?  or a mini-safe?  or what?
Thank you!

They have a locker/wardrobe.  Some of them will need good locks, but some of the wardrobes have locks. So they need to be prepared with a combo lock, just in case.  That varies from place to place, even different barackson the same base, but f they don't need it at school, it might come in handy later. They absolutely must get in the habit of locking everything up throughout their enlistment.  They're not usually allowed to leave things out in their rooms without permission, but can get a chit for larger electronics.
A mini-safe is not needed, just caution, mindfulness, and a good lock.  And never leave your laundry unattended in the laundry room.  Seriously, people suck and will steal your uniform items, and your underwear.

Anti M - thank you for this info!!

@ Momsy. That was about the amount of time my son had and he was sent to A school right after PIR day. The time was used to get them acclimated to routines at the A school. I had to meet him at airport to give him his phone after PIR.

Thanks everyone....will find him a good lock and we found a weekly planner with note pages ....there is an anchor on the cover and the words "Adventure Begins" he called yesterday and is doing well....a little snotty but said he feels okay..... said most were coughing and all but they are determined to push through... again thank you for your responses
