Rebecca, Please add me to the Sonoma County group. I would love to get together with other Navy Moms. My son is a SEAL. I presume this is safe to mention this. I am a Realtor, as well as romance writer. We are very proud of our son, who has been a SEAL for 6 years.
Please add me to your list. Also, there is some get together in Livermore? Can you send me any and all meetings? I'd like to attend any that I can.
Thank you so much,
Sharon Hamilton
Hi Rebecca -
Your time frame is really tight. It is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Norfolk to DC and that is without traffic. Fridays are a bear in DC on hwy 95. Also, due to the flooding in Virginia things are a little messed up right now.
I personnally like the Marriott properties because they don't allow smoking in the rooms. Most of their brands also offer a free breakfast. Most also offer a military rate! Presently, I'm in temporary quarters in a Residence Inn in the S.F. Bay Area.
Due to the flooding, I would try to stay close as possible to DC during your visit. I checked all the military rate Marriot properties. It is the same rate to stay in D.C. as it is in Arlington or Alexandria which is $211 per night (this was based on 4 people). Some in D.C. are close enough to walk to the mall. (website - marriott.com)
Seeing D.C. in one day is almost impossible. Just one Smithsonian Museum could take a complete day. Is this the first time your family has been to D.C.? Also, Williamsburg and Historic Jamestowne are both closer to Norfolk. Always worth a visit. We park in the parking by William & Mary College and just walk in. If you don't have a full day to see Williamsburg, it is too costly. If you just walk the streets and don't go into any of the non-shop buildings they don't seem to care.
Let me know what your budget is for the hotel rooms. I would stay away from Richmond for hotels as there are many that are in bad areas. Our son, prior to joining the Navy, attended school in Richmond, so we are very aware of problems there. Fredericksburg is okay in certains areas.
Hopefully this is a little helpful. Please feel free to ask any other questions. I wasn't sure what information to write, as I don't know the particulars of the ages in the group and your budget. (D.C. is expensive - best/reasonable food is at Elephant & Castle)

Happy 4th of July my friend. How are you? How is Matthew? Any word when he will be back in the US? Jennifer is out on a cruise for sea trials, they have a busy 4 months. She doesn't think she can come home in Aug, more like Nov now.
I'm really missing her this week, last Thursday - I prayed to God to please let her come to me in my dreams and she did and when I checked my e-mails the next morning, there was a e-mail. Put me at ease for a while.
Lets plan something soon. Jor-Jean's son Kyle is home, I'm so happy for her. So we need to meet when he leaves.
Enjoy your weekend!!!!
Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Jor-Jean is on her way to Homecoming, I text her Friday night, she was so excited. Homecomings are amazing, I can't wait for you to experience a Homecoming.
How is Matthew doing? Jennifer's ship came out of drydock today, out to sea for 3 days for trails. She hopes to come home in Aug.
We will get together soon, even if it's for a quick coffee. Do you have any plans for the summer?
Take care
