A Sailor's Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, the ship was out steaming,
Sailors stood watch while others were dreaming.

They lived in a crowd with racks tight and small,
in a 80-man berthing, cramped one and all.

I had come down the stack with presents to give,
And to see inside just who might perhaps live.

I looked all about, a strange sight did I see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stockings were hung, shined boots close at hand,
On the bulkhead hung pictures of a far distant land.

They… Continue

More Tiger Answers

Hi all,
I had hoped to refer you the Lincoln website and the Tiger link, but it is gone. Here are a few basics:
who can't go: spouses, boy/girlfriends, significate others-Navy doesn't want relations on the ship. It is still a fully functionable ship and the sailors have a job to do.

Who can go: parents, step parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, extended family. It is based on available spots, and health. First come, first served, then health issues are the deciding factor. I met a couple o… Continue

Tiger Cruise explained

Hi all,
I've gotten many comments and I appreciate that. My husband went to Virginia Beach today to see our son, so I have been busy getting him ready for his trip.

A tiger cruise is when the Navy allows civilans to ride the aircraft carrier from Hawaii to San Diego or Everett, Washington. I would imagine that the Atlantic fleet does the same. You live where the sailors live, in other words, there aren't guest quarters. And yes, I did ask my son that question. He laughed pretty hard.

It is an… Continue

Tiger Cruise

Hi all,
I am new to this site. It is inspiring to read about other boys and girls (really young men and women). My husband and I have just returned from the Tiger Cruise aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. We flew to Hawaii on 10-1 and set sail for San Diego on 10-3. What an adventure and I would encourage anyone else to take it if they can! It was an experience of a lifetime. We lived as the sailors do and boy, it is hard work!
I wrote a daily blog for my local news station and you can read it ther… Continue

Sue, Hi! Pat (the amazing USS Nimitz mom!) suggested I contact you. I am trying to get the address of the USS New York. I had the honor to be at the commissioning ceremony and as a New Yorker and Navy mom it was truly amazing! I would also love the address to send money to help in the mailing of your project (I cannot sew-at all -but would like to help in some way). can you pm me info? thanks

Hi Sue, I am the Judy looking for the address to send goodies to the troops on the ground in Afghanistan. Do you have an address for me? Sure would appreciate it. Anything that you know they need? My son's friend is a SEAL and in Iraq, and he says they don't need anything, they can get whatever they want. I'd love to send this to troops who do need some things. Thanks, Judy

Sue, I was having scarfs sent to me for the Seabees group, but I just found out that Alex's sub is getting back right after Thanksgiving. I will be going to Groton directly from St. Louis and won't be home to collect the scarfs. Nor will I have time to re- pack them and ship them on time. So I asked any HAE moms to send them to you instead, If that is a problem please let me know. Also let me know how much they (if any) cost to ship. I intend to send you money to cover the shipping. Hope this is OK.

P.S. That pillow case you're holding is amazing, by the way. I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

Sue, I actually haven't sewn in years. When we get back from Washington next week, I'll drag out my sewing machine and see if it still works.

Thanks for the pillowcase oinstructions. I haven't sewn in a while, but I'm willing to give it a shot. It's probably a lot faster than making an afghan.

Well, if you're ever up this way I'm sure your hubby and mine would find a lot to talk about! On my profile you can see the back end of a '53 Ford Victoria he chopped. We have pictures of every car he's done. He's an artist at it, that's for sure.

Yes, those old cars are good for some quick $$ aren't they? We sold our '55 Thunderbird for a down payment on our first home. My husband and son restore cars - I'm embarrassed to tell you how many cars we have (and pieces of cars). My hubby teaches auto body repair.

He's on the Stennis and we did a TC in July. What an awesome experience! I can't wait to do another one. My son loves Mustangs - he and my husband restored that one. He drives a 2005 and loves it also.
