hco1972,

I'm so sorry that first phone call was so hard for you.  I will warn you now that you can expect other highs and lows both in phone calls and letters.  The first several hours as the new recruits get to  bc is extremely stressful.  Don't be too concerned about the tearful phone call - it could have been her way of releasing some stress!!!  You may get calls or letters where your daughter complains about everything, says she made a big mistake, tells you she can't do this, and other similar rants.  Try not to get too alarmed.  One thing us moms learn after awhile, is that they need a safe haven to vent to - and that is us.  They certainly can't complain to anyone around them because it could make things worse.  So they get everything off their chests to us - Mom!!!!  Now we'll spend days, weeks, or longer worrying about what is going wrong and by the next call or letter everything is fine with them!!!!  We've worried for nothing!!!  Always be supportive when you talk or write to her.  If they are REALLY having a problem, the RDCs at bc will address the situation.  If it should turn out that the Navy isn't working out the RDCs will have your daughter call home and most likely she would get separated.  But only AFTER all avenues have been tried.  They don't want sailors to wash out but they won't force someone to stay either.  I'm not trying to scare you into thinking she will have these kinds of problems - - I just want to share some experiences with you!!!

I meant it when I said there are many moms who are here to help you out.  There are lots of experiences and opinions but mostly all will agree that our job is to support and encourage our sailors.  Send lots and lots of letters but do not send anything that will bring unwanted attention to your girl.  Don't be afraid to ask us any questions you have.  And we are here when you need someone to vent to as well!!  All of us have been there at one time or another!!!!!
