DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Make change 3 at the bottom of OPSEC and PERSEC (Making Changes to Your Profile) (clickable link). There may be other changes you need to make as well, so read and consider each of the changes.

Join the group, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in December. You will meet others with loved ones leaving that day/week who may be in the same TG and have PIR together. Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for the RTC.

Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer him/her to some good links on there.

Welcome to Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones). I look forward to sharing this journey with you. Be sure to check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) for information on what to expect and to help you prepare for PIR. Start with OPSEC and PERSEC (Making Changes to Your Profile) and Arrival and What Happens at the RTC and read 1 or 2 pages a day and then go back to them as you need the info. What is your future Sailor's rating (job/specialty) going to be? There are groups for most ratings and/or "A" Schools and knowing that will help you to better plan for PIR weekend. Take care and blessings to you and yours.

The "box" is sent home with whatever personal effects your son takes to boot camp with him.  Usually their clothes (unless he donates them or throws them away - old clothes!), cell phone, any stuff like that.  The jeans will often times be rolled up because they have them do that to measure their shoes/pants.....There isn't a letter or anything in that box because they are usually in a big hurry and are being hollered at to get their stuff packed up!  Mine managed to write a note to us while on the plane and he stuffed it in his pants pocket for us.  Ask your son to do that - it's a nice surprise!  Oh the phone is often tucked into a shoe to keep it safe....After the box then the letter comes with all their PIR info and their mailing address.  Start writing letters as soon as your son leaves and # them on the envelope.  That way as soon as you get the address you can mail them all out and he will know the order to read them in...

Most of this info is on the Boot Camp mom's page.  Start reading now and watching videos!  You'll be amazed at how much you can learn before your son ships ;-)

That's fantastic that he got the job he wanted!

My son left for BC on 10/23/12.  He is currently in Ballston Spa, NY, in nuclear Prototype school.  He got there in January - prior to that he was in nuke school in Goose Creek, SC for a year.  We were lucky that we got to visit him in NY over Easter and also were able to visit him in SC while he was there.  It's hard with him being so far away but he is happy so that makes me happy!

Now that you know his job you can look for that group.  Also be sure to join the December DEP group.  Enjoy the time you have with him - trust me, it will go by fast!

Have a Happy Mother's Day!
