First off ladies my heart goes out to you for supporting your love one's. It's not the end of the world to be classified undes. I should know I was way back in the 70's ha ha . I had the best times of my life in the Navy. My buddies were jealous as hell, I got orders for the West Indies paradise is what it  was. Anyways I have a daughter who will be joining the Navy soon. And this old salt will recommend the undesighnted way of life to her. Its good ole fashion on the job trainning. Gives them plenty of time to know what they really want. I'am sure I'll be on here again.

Hi there! That's kind of the rub, there is no job description. My son just had PIR on 10/4/13. He has been on hold due to the gov shutdown. Here is what we know. For EPACT my son will attend a short school for about 5 weeks, not A school, those are for specific ratings and last longer. Then he will be stationed and work until he is eligible to strike for a rating. My understanding is that he will do a variety of the base jobs that lead into the five ratings in engineering (EPACT), I would assume that the SPACT and APACT do the same.

My son told me this morning that many of the SR's in his group are now undes, even tho many arrived with a specific rating. I don't know if this is normal or a result of the shutdown.

When does your son leave for bootcamp?

kadikaboom626 (Ship 14 Div 375)

I can't really tell you the whole story here but he graduated from boot camp many months ago. Now he has to choose a new path with the Navy.

Let's put it this way....there are many men like my son who are college educated who have no choice (for lack of any rate available) that have to sign undesignated.

It's a shame that these guys have so much to give and have given to the Navy that they are put in this situation.

My son is an undesignated seaman. Finished his A school at GL in about 3 weeks, and reported to Little Creek, VA. He is on an LSD and is an E3. He has a degree. He works on the deck crew... So far he is a happy guy. Couldn't take his test to rank up until March (He had been in the Navy 6 months but that included BC.). Too early to tell if its good or bad. Good I guess because he not locked into a rate, therefore nor stuck with something he didn't know if he'd like.

MAG     good point to say that at least these guys are not locked into a rate and stuck with something that they might not want.

Do you know when they can "strike" or get a rate or rank up?  I hear 6 mos.    a year    and   a year and  a half.

Thanks

Hi there, I was in the navy in the 80's so things might have changed.  I went into bc with a A school but lost it due to poor decisions before I left lol  I went to the fleet chose Airman and was glad I did.  I spent a year in the fleet then went to A school much wiser and knowing what I wanted to do.  I went for Aviation Electrician Mate and having the hands on experience really helped with the school.  There was about 10 of us that went to A school from my squadron at the same time.  I think its a blessing in disguise to actually see what it's all about.

thanks

My son is Undesignated APACT PIR of Nov 1st 2013 ship 12 div 410.

My son gradurates this Friday. He called today with I am a sailor call! He goes to GL after PIR

and is suppose to be there 4 wks. He is going to be stationed on USS Momsen out of Everett Washington. He is excited!

Thanks, David B...I know you wrote this a few years back. My bf was mentioning that he wasn't sure what job he wanted to pick he said "maybe an Aviation Mechanic... Anyhow, he graduated A school quickly since he's an 'undesignated airman' and got quickly sent to Japan! I'm over the shock and after learning about what being 'undesignated' means...I agree with you, sounds like the best thing. To try out different jobs before picking one. Brilliant. Anyhow, I have joined the 'Undesignated' group on here and am looking to connect with others going through this with their sailor. ;-) Thanks again for writing the above.

Hello Everyone,

My son shipped on 1/7/15 and is in SHIP 03 DIV 102, PIR 03-06-2015. I really would have preferred him to have "waited" to have picked an actual rating/job, but he was just wanting to join and start BC and of course was told this was a good option as he would have the opportunity to get a "feel" for something and then be able to go that route. I have a older son  in the military (ARMY) and  do know that that when you are enlisting and the jobs you want are not available, the recruiters will still try to get you to sign up. I am just hoping that choosing the S-PACT program for my son will be a good experience for him and that he and others who joined this  program will truly be given the opportunity to choose a specific rating. I support his decision for joining, just want to make sure it will be a good experience because this is a 4 year commitment.

Hello!  I hope this group still has some activity.Just some background info about us. Our second son is set to leave for GL Dec. 5th... 10 days from now. This son was in DEP his senior year of high school, graduated high school May 2016.  Originally enlisted as an aviation machinist mate but was told 10 days before he was due to leave for boot camp that his rate was no longer available. Needless to say, we had a very disappointed son.  Fast forward four months to now... this son had told his recruiter he wanted to cut his contract so he could go speak with another branch. He was done waiting ( he was told to be patient and wait for an answer ..this went on the entire four months). He was just caught in the middle of a budget crunch, end of the fiscal year and a presidential election. Now this son is going in S-PACT, I believe it is the name. I can't remember his ASVAB scores but I do wish he would have retaken the ASVAB to get a higher score.

We have a son active duty stationed in Kings Bay as a MM on a sub.  He had no issues in DEP, boot camp ( just frustrations that other SR's were "screwing off and not taking it seriously") and has completed his first patrol and is preparing for his second.

Sorry for the long post.. Im just anxious for our second son to have a good boot camp ( well, as good as one could possibly have) and find a rate that best suits him. From what I have read, it sounds like this might be a good thing for him. Fingers crossed.

thanks for letting me ramble.

My son Is in the same situation. We knew nothing about the Navy. He scored high on his test but for stuck as an pact. He was only in A school for 4 weeks he is about to leave for Japan in 2 days as an pact. I am worried about that. He is very smart and a hard worker. I hope he doesn't have issues with this I hope he can learn a trade I hope he can get a job soon. I'm worried to death. I want him to have a good Navy experience. I don't know why they would let people that so well do well on their test go Un. designated It seems they should have guided them in the right direction. I'm praying it will all turn out to be a good experience.
